Zinc-air batteries offer large specific energy densities, while relying on abundant and non-toxic materials. In this paper, we present the first multi-dimensional simulations of zinc-air batteries. We refine our existing theory-based model of secondary zinc-air systems. The model comprises thermodynamically consistent multi-species transport in alkaline electrolytes, formation and dissolution of metallic zinc and passivating zinc oxide, as well as multi-phase coexistence in gas diffusion electrodes. For the first time, we simulate zinc shape-change during battery cycling by modeling convection of zinc solids. We validate our model with in-situ tomography of commercial button cells. Two-dimensional volume-averaged simulations of cell voltage and zinc electrode morphology during discharge agree with these measurements. Thus, we can study how electrolyte carbonation limits shelf-life and how zinc shape-change limits cycle-life. The charging current is found to be the major contributor to cycle-life limitations. Self-propelled colloids constitute an important class of intrinsically non-equilibrium matter. Typically, such a particle moves ballistically at short times, but eventually changes its orientation, and displays random-walk behavior in the long-time limit. Theory predicts that if the velocity of non-interacting swimmers varies spatially in 1D, $v(x)$, then their density $\rho(x)$ satisfies $\rho(x) = \rho(0)v(0)/v(x)$, where $x = 0$ is an arbitrary reference point. Such a dependence of steady-state $\rho(x)$ on the particle dynamics, which was the qualitative basis of recent work demonstrating how to `paint' with bacteria, is forbidden in thermal equilibrium. We verify this prediction quantitatively by constructing bacteria that swim with an intensity-dependent speed when illuminated. A spatial light pattern therefore creates a speed profile, along which we find that, indeed, $\rho(x)v(x) = \mathrm{constant}$, provided that steady state is reached.

Recently, two independent experiments reported the observation of long-lived polarons in a Bose-Einstein condensate, providing an excellent setting to study the generic scenario of a mobile impurity interacting with a quantum reservoir. Here, we expand the experimental analysis by disentangling the effects of trap inhomogeneities and the many-body continuum in one of these experiments. This makes it possible to extract the energy of the polaron at a well-defined density as a function of the interaction strength. Comparisons with quantum Monte-Carlo as well as diagrammatic calculations show good agreement, and provide a more detailed picture of the polaron properties at stronger interactions than previously possible. Moreover, we develop a semi-classical theory for the motional dynamics and three-body loss of the polarons, which partly explains a previously unresolved discrepancy between theory and experimental observations for repulsive interactions. Finally, we utilize quantum Monte-Carlo calculations to demonstrate that the findings reported in the two experiments are consistent with each other.

$^{229}$Th is the only known nucleus with an excited state that offers the possibility for a direct laser excitation using existing laser technology. Its excitation energy has been measured indirectly to be 7.8(5) eV ($\approx$160 nm). The energy and lifetime of the isomeric state make it the presently only suitable candidate for a nuclear optical clock, the uncertainty of the excitation energy is, however, still too large to allow for a direct laser excitation in a Paul trap. Therefore, a major goal during the past years has been an improved energy determination. One possible approach is to measure the kinetic energy of electrons which are emitted in the internal conversion decay of the first isomeric state in $^{229}$Th. For this reason an electron spectrometer based on a magnetic bottle combined with electrical retarding fields has been built. Its design, as well as first test measurements are presented, which reveal a relative energy resolution of 3 % and thus enable to measure the electrons' expected kinetic energy to better than 0.1 eV. This is sufficiently precise to specify a laser system able to drive the nuclear clock transition in $^{229}$Th.

Fluctuations are a key property of both classical and quantum systems. While the fluctuations are well understood for many quantum systems at zero temperature, the case of an interacting quantum system at finite temperature still poses numerous challenges. Despite intense theoretical investigations of atom number fluctuations in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), their amplitude in experimentally relevant interacting systems is still poorly understood. Moreover, technical limitations have prevented their experimental observation to date. Here we report the first observation of these fluctuations. Our experiments are based on a stabilization technique, which allows for the preparation of ultracold thermal clouds at the shot noise level, thereby eliminating numerous technical noise sources. Furthermore, we make use of the correlations established by the evaporative cooling process to precisely determine the fluctuations and the sample temperature. This allows us to observe a telltale signature: the sudden increase in fluctuations of the condensate atom number close to the critical temperature., Comment: Main text: 5 pages, 4 figures. We use moving light patterns to control the motion of {\it Escherichia coli} bacteria whose motility is photo-activated. Varying the pattern speed controls the magnitude and direction of the bacterial flux, and therefore the accumulation of cells in up- and down-stream reservoirs. We validate our results with two-dimensional simulations and a 1-dimensional analytic model, and use these to explore parameter space. We find that cell accumulation is controlled by a competition between directed flux and undirected, stochastic transport. We articulate design principles for using moving light patterns and light-activated micro-swimmers to achieve particular experimental goals.

We demonstrate novel implementations of high-precision optical magnetometers which allow for spatially-selective and spatially-resolved in situ measurements using cold atomic clouds. These are realised by using shaped dispersive probe beams combined with spatially-resolved balanced homodyne detection. Two magnetometer sequences are discussed: a vectorial magnetometer, which yields sensitivities two orders of magnitude better compared to a previous realisation and a Larmor magnetometer capable of measuring absolute magnetic fields. We characterise the dependence of single-shot precision on the size of the analysed region for the vectorial magnetometer and provide a lower bound for the measurement precision of magnetic field gradients for the Larmor magnetometer. Finally, we give an outlook on how dynamic trapping potentials combined with selective probing can be used to realise enhanced quantum simulations in quantum gas microscopes., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Understanding the effects of interactions in complex quantum systems beyond the mean-field paradigm constitutes a fundamental problem in physics. Here, we show how the atom numbers and interactions in a Bose-Bose mixture can be tuned to cancel mean-field interactions completely. The resulting system is entirely governed by quantum fluctuations -- specifically the Lee-Huang-Yang correlations. We derive an effective one-component Gross-Pitaevskii equation for this system, which is shown to be very accurate by comparison with a full two-component description. This allows us to show how the Lee-Huang-Yang correlation energy can be accurately measured using two powerful probes of atomic gases: collective excitations and radio-frequency spectroscopy. Importantly, the behavior of the system is robust against deviations from the atom number and interaction criteria for canceling the mean-field interactions. This shows that it is feasible to realize a setting where quantum fluctuations are not masked by mean-field forces, allowing investigations of the Lee-Huang-Yang correction at unprecedented precision.

Although the occurrence of solar irradiance variations induced by magnetic surface features (e.g., sunspots, faculae, magnetic network) is generally accepted, the existence of intrinsic luminosity changes due to the internal magnetic fields is still controversial. This additional contribution is expected to be accompanied by radius variations, and to be potentially significant for the climate of the Earth. We aim to constrain theoretically the radius and luminosity variations of the Sun that are due to the effect of the variable magnetic fields in its interior associated with the dynamo cycle. We have extended a one-dimensional stellar evolution code to include several effects of the magnetic fields on the interior structure. We investigate different magnetic configurations, based on both observational constraints and on the output of state-of-the-art mean field dynamo models. We explore both step-like and simply periodic time dependences of the magnetic field peak strength. We find that the luminosity and radius variations are in anti-phase and in phase, respectively, with the magnetic field strength. For peak magnetic field strengths of the order of tens of kilogauss, luminosity variations ranging between 10^{-6} and 10^{-3} (in modulus) and radius variations between 10^{-6} and 10^{-5} are obtained. Modest but significant radius variations (up to 10^{-5} in relative terms) are obtained for magnetic fields of realistic strength and geometry, providing a potentially observable signature of the intrinsic variations. We introduce a Bayesian prior distribution, the Logit-Normal continuous analogue of the spike-and-slab (LN-CASS), which enables flexible parameter estimation and variable/model selection in a variety of settings. We demonstrate its use and efficacy in three case studies -- a simulation study and two studies on real biological data from the fields of metabolomics and genomics. The prior allows the use of classical statistical models, which are easily interpretable and well-known to applied scientists, but performs comparably to common machine learning methods in terms of generalisability to previously unseen data.

Context. Solar dynamo models of Babcock-Leighton type typically assume the rise of magnetic flux tubes to be instantaneous. Solutions with high-magnetic-diffusivity have too short periods and a wrong migration of their active belts. Only the low-diffusivity regime with advective meridional flows is usually considered. Aims. In the present paper we discuss these assumptions and applied a time delay in the source term of the azimuthally averaged induction equation. This delay is set to be the rise time of magnetic flux tubes which supposedly form at the tachocline. We study the effect of the delay, which adds to the spacial non-locality a non-linear temporal one, in the advective but particularly in the diffusive regime. Methods. Fournier et al. (2017) obtained the rise time according to stellar parameters such as rotation, and the magnetic field strength at the bottom of the convection zone. These results allowed us to constrain the delay in the mean-field model used in a parameter study. Results. We identify an unknown family of solutions. These solutions self-quench, and exhibit longer periods than their non-delayed counterparts. Additionally, we demonstrate that the non-linear delay is responsible for the recover of the equatorward migration of the active belts at high turbulent diffusivities. Conclusions. By introducing a non-linear temporal non-locality (the delay) in a Babcock-Leighton dynamo model, we could obtain solutions quantitatively comparable to the solar butterfly diagram in the diffusion-dominated regime., Comment: 11 pages, 10 Figures

We present reconstructed sunspot positions based on observations reported in letters between Gottfried Kirch and other contemporary astronomers from AD 1680 to 1709, i.e. in the last decades of the Maunder Minimum. The letters were compiled and edited by Herbst (2006). The letters (and observations) from Kirch are mostly by Gottfried Kirch, but some also by his 2nd wife Maria M. Kirch (married 1692) and their son Christfried Kirch (born 1694). Using excerpts from the letters, some with drawings, we found some 35 sunspot groups (often for several days in a row or with interruptions) by Kirch and/or his letter partners (in three cases, only the month is given: 1704 Jan, Feb, 1707 Mar, otherwise always the exact dates) - usually one group at a time. We also found 17 explicit spotless days, several of them new (previously without any known observations). We could constrain the heliographic latitude by Bayesian inference for 19 sunspot groups - five of them completely new (one group 1680 May 20-22 from Kirch and Ihle, one to two groups 1680 Jun 15-23 for Kirch, one group 1684 May 6 from Ihle, and one group 1688 Dec 14-15 from Kirch), while the others mostly agree (within 2sigma) with previously published values for those dates by others. With these data, we then amend the butterfly diagram for the Maunder Minimum. By comparison of our data with the sunspot group catalog in Hoyt & Schatten (1998), we noticed a number of discrepancies, e.g. that dates for British observers in the Maunder Minimum (Flamsteed, Caswell, Derham, Stannyan, Gray, and Sharp) as listed in Hoyt & Schatten (1998) are their original Julian dates, not converted to the Gregorian calendar (10-11 day offset in Hoyt & Schatten). Most of these modifications also apply to the modified sunspot group catalog in Vaquero et al. (2016). Ultracold atomic gases are an important testing ground for understanding few-body physics. In particular, these systems enable a detailed study of the Efimov effect. We use ultracold $^{39}\mathrm{K}$ to investigate the temperature dependence of an Efimov resonance. The shape and position of the observed resonance are analyzed by employing an empirical fit, and universal finite-temperature zero-range theory. Both procedures suggest that the resonance position shifts towards lower absolute scattering lengths when approaching the zero-temperature limit. We extrapolate this shift to obtain an estimate of the three-body parameter at zero temperature. A surprising finding of our study is that the resonance becomes less prominent at lower temperatures, which currently lacks a theoretical description and implies physical effects beyond available models. Finally, we present measurements performed near the Feshbach resonance center and discuss the prospects for observing the second Efimov resonance in $^{39}\mathrm{K}$.

We present and analyse the sunspot observations performed by Franz I. C. Hallaschka in 1814 and 1816. These solar observations were carried out during the so-called Dalton minimum, around the maximum phase of the Solar Cycle 6. These records are very valuable because they allow us to complete observational gaps in the collection of sunspot group numbers, improving its coverage for this epoch. We have analysed and compared the observations made by Hallaschka with the records made by other contemporary observers. Unfortunately, the analysis of the sunspot areas and positions showed that they are too inaccurate for scientific use. But, we conclude that sunspot counts made by Hallaschka are similar to those made by other astronomers of that time.
