We calculate the non-abelian R-charges of BPS monopole operators in three-dimensional gauge theories with N=3 supersymmetry. This class of models includes ABJM theory, the proposed gauge theory dual of M-theory on AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k, as a special case. In the UV limit of the N=3 theories the Yang-Mills coupling becomes weak and the monopole operators are described by classical backgrounds. This allows us to find their SU(2)_R charges in a one-loop computation which by virtue of the non-renormalization of non-abelian R-charges yields the exact result for any value of the coupling. The spectrum of SU(2)_R charges is found by quantizing the SU(2)/U(1) collective coordinate of the BPS background, whose dynamics is that of a charged particle on a sphere with a Wess-Zumino term representing a magnetic monopole at its center. If the Wess-Zumino coefficient is h, then the smallest possible SU(2)_R representation for BPS monopole operators has spin |h|/2. We find, in agreement with earlier proposals, that h is proportional to the sum of the U(1)_R charges of all the fermion fields weighted by the effective monopole charges determined by their gauge representations. The field content of ABJM theory is such that h=0. This proves for any Chern-Simons level k the existence of monopole operators which are singlets under all global symmetries and have vanishing scaling dimensions. We discuss the N=2 superspace formulation of the N=8 superconformal Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory, and of the N=6 superconformal Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena U(N)xU(N) Chern-Simons theory. In particular, we prove the full SU(4) R-symmetry of the ABJM theory. We then consider orbifold projections of this theory that give non-chiral and chiral (U(N)xU(N))^n superconformal quiver gauge theories. We argue that these theories are dual to certain AdS_4 x S^7/(Z_n x Z_k) backgrounds of M-theory. We also study a SU(3) invariant mass term in the superpotential that makes the N=8 theory flow to a N=2 superconformal gauge theory with a sextic superpotential. We conjecture that this gauge theory is dual to the U(1)_R x SU(3) invariant extremum of the N=8 gauged supergravity, which was discovered by N. We quantify and interpret the long-term variability of dayside Martian upper thermosphere and lower exosphere densities within 180–275 km altitudes. Atmospheric CO2, N2, O, and Ar densities are from NASA Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) observations during the time period of 2015–2020 near solar minimum. These neutral measurements, together with contemporaneous solar irradiance measurements at Mars, enable disentanglement of the orbital effect (due to the annual Sun-Mars distance change with solar longitude) and the solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) effect in atmospheric density variations. The relative importance of these two effects, which is obtained using a statistical method of Dominance Analysis, reveals the competition between the indirect effect of solar infrared (via the upward coupling from the middle atmosphere) and the direct effect of solar EUV (due to local heating). Our results show that, unlike the orbital effect which is relatively constant at low altitudes and then decreases with increasing altitude, the solar EUV effect nearly monotonically increases. These two effects are comparable at high altitudes (about 240/270/205 km for CO2/N2/O). This analysis is extended to include long-term exospheric mass density estimates near 400 km from Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey data, with a focus on representative solar cycle phases of solar minimum and maximum. It is found that near 400 km, the orbital effect is always a key driver regardless of the solar cycle phase, while the solar EUV effect plays a minor role during solar minimum and is greatly enhanced and slightly exceeds the orbital effect during solar maximum.

As shown in arXiv:hep-th/0405282, the warped deformed conifold has two bosonic massless modes, a pseudoscalar and a scalar, that are dual to the phase and the modulus of the baryonic condensates in the cascading gauge theory. We reconsider the scalar mode sector, mixing fluctuations of the NS-NS 2-form and the metric, and include non-zero 4-d momentum $k_\mu$. The resulting pair of coupled equations produce a discrete spectrum of $m_4^2=- k_\mu^2$ which is interpreted as the spectrum of $J^{PC}= 0^{+-}$ glueballs in the gauge theory. Similarly, we derive the spectrum of certain pseudoscalar glueballs with $J^{PC}= 0^{--}$, which originate from the decoupled fluctuations of the RR 2-form. We argue that each of the massive scalar or pseudoscalar modes we find belongs to a 4-d massive axial vector or vector supermultiplet. We give an exact analytic solution of the strong coupling limit of the integral equation which was recently proposed to describe the universal scaling function of high spin operators in N = 4 gauge theory. The solution agrees with the prediction from string theory, confirms the earlier numerical analysis and provides a basis for developing a systematic perturbation theory around strong coupling., Comment: 26 pages, 2 figures

We provide new evidence for the gauge/string duality between the baryonic branch of the cascading SU(k(M+1)) \times SU(kM) gauge theory and a family of type IIB flux backgrounds based on warped products of the deformed conifold and R^{3,1}. We show that a Euclidean D5-brane wrapping all six deformed conifold directions can be used to measure the baryon expectation values, and present arguments based on kappa-symmetry and the equations of motion that identify the gauge bundles required to ensure worldvolume supersymmetry of this object. Furthermore, we investigate its coupling to the pseudoscalar and scalar modes associated with the phase and magnitude, respectively, of the baryon expectation value. We find that these massless modes perturb the Dirac-Born-Infeld and Chern-Simons terms of the D5-brane action in a way consistent with our identification of the baryonic condensates. We match the scaling dimension of the baryon operators computed from the D5-brane action with that found in the cascading gauge theory. In two remarkable recent papers, hep-th/0610248 and hep-th/0610251, the complete planar perturbative expansion was proposed for the universal function of the coupling, f(g), appearing in the dimensions of high-spin operators of the N=4 SYM theory. We study numerically the integral equation derived in hep-th/0610251, which implements a resummation of the perturbative expansion, and find a smooth function that approaches the asymptotic form predicted by string theory. In fact, the two leading terms at strong coupling match with high accuracy the results obtained for the semiclassical folded string spinning in $AdS_5$. This constitutes a remarkable confirmation of the AdS/CFT correspondence for high-spin operators, and equivalently for the cusp anomaly of a Wilson loop.
