MNDO calculations were carried out of the ground and transitional states of the planar inversion of the N atom for ketenimines containing σ (Me, NH2, OH, OMe, and F) and π (CH = O) acceptor N substituents as well as for C-amino- and C-formylketenimines. Configurationally stable N-amino-, N-alkoxy-, and N-fluoroketenimines (inversion barriers ∼27–45 kcal/mole) are of interest for further experimental stereochemical studies. The geometry of the ketenimine fragment is determined in general bynN-πCC* conjugation. Other orbital and Coulombic interactions affect C- and N-substituent orientation relative to this fragment.

First results of endoscopic applications of optical coherence tomography for in vivo studies of human mucosa in respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary and genital tracts are presented. A novel endoscopic OCT (EOCT) system has been created that is based on the integration of a sampling arm of an all-optical-fiber interferometer into standard endoscopic devices using their biopsy channel to transmit low-coherence radiation to investigated tissue. We have studied mucous membranes of esophagus, larynx, stomach, urinary bladder, uterine cervix and body as typical localization for carcinomatous processes. Images of tumor tissues versus healthy tissues have been recorded and analyzed. Violations of well-defined stratified healthy mucosa structure in cancered tissue are distinctly seen by EOCT, thus making this technique promising for early diagnosis of tumors and precise guiding of excisional biopsy.

A significant difference between experimental13C NMR chemical shifts and those predicted from the13C NMR/IR databank was found for bi- and tricyclic diaziridines. Quantum chemical (AMI) and molecular-mechanical (MMX) calculations showed that the relative chemical shift of the nodal C atom is dependent mainly on deformations of the C-C-C valence angle at this atom.

We used the technique of scrape loading to introduce phalloidin into mouse embryo fibroblasts in mass culture. Phalloidin almost completely destroyed actin microfilament bundles, but the amount of polymerized cytoskeleton-associated actin was increased approximately two-fold and the amount of monomeric (Triton X-100 extractable) actin was significantly reduced. The major result of the present study is that the rate of actin synthesis in the phalloidin-treated cells was 2–3 times higher than in the control cells. Northern blot and translation in a cell-free system from rabbit reticulocytes showed that the actin mRNA level significantly increased as a result of phalloidin treatment.

The energy differences Δϵ of the n-orbitals n+ and n− (HOMO and HOMO-1) in the tricyclic and bicyclic diaziridines 1, 2, 5 and 6 have been determined by photoelectron spectroscopy and AM1 calculations. It has been found that Δϵ is determined mainly by the pyramidality of the nitrogen atoms. Although the interactions with the Walsh orbital ωA are considerable, they are of minor importance for the MO separation.

Amination of 2-methoxycarbonyl-3-chloro-1-pyrroline 1 with H2NOSO3H occurs predominantly from the anti side with respect to chlorine to afford the bicyclic diaziridine 2 with axial orientation of the 4-chloro substituent. Chlorination of 2 takes place exclusively in the 6-endo position to give 3a. 4,6-Dichlorodiaziridine is transformed from chair 3a into boat 3b as a result of endo-exo isomerization.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a new high spatial resolution, real-time optical imaging modality, known from prior pilot studies for its high sensitivity to invasive cancer. We reported our results in an OCT feasibility study for accurate determination of the proximal border for esophageal carcinoma and the distal border for rectal carcinoma. The OCT study enrolled 19 patients with rectal adenocarcinoma and 24 patients with distal esophageal carcinoma (14 squamous cell carcinomas, 10 adenocarcinomas). During pre-surgery planning endoscopy we performed in vivo OCT imaging of the tumor border at four dial clock axes (12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock). The OCT border then was marked by an electrocoagulator, or by a methylene blue tattoo. A cold biopsy (from the esophagus) was performed at visual and OCT borders and compared with visual and OCT readings. 27 post-surgery excised specimens were analyzed. OCT borders matched the histopathology in 94% cases in the rectum and 83.3% in the esophagus. In the cases of a mismatch between the OCT and histology borders, a deep tumor invasion occurred in the muscle layer (esophagus, rectum). Because of its high sensitivity to mucosal cancer, OCT can be used for pre-surgery planning and surgery guidance of the proximal border for esophageal carcinoma and the distal border for rectal carcinoma. However, deep invasion in the rectum or esophageal wall has to be controlled by alternative diagnostic modalities.

A simple one-pot procedure for the regioselective synthesis of pyrazoles from readily available starting materials is described. Vilsmeier type reagent 1 reacts with imines 10 (via the corresponding tautomeric secondary enamines) in tetrahydrofuran to give enaminoimine hydrochlorides 11. Nonsymmetrical imines generally react preferentially with 1 at the sterically less hindered α-position. The enaminoimine hydrochlorides 11 are transformed in situ to the corresponding pyrazoles 12 in moderate to high yields by the addition of hydrazine.

165. 13C NMR spectra of tricyclic diaziridines and their data-base forecasts

The 13C NMR data for tricyclic and bicyclic diaziridines with condensed five- and six-membered rings are interpreted and compared with the forecast of the C13-NMR/IR data-base (successor: SPECINFO data-base). There are large differences in chemical shifts and large deviations in the forecasts. Bond angles from semi-empirical AM1 calculations with geometry optimization correlate with the observed shifts. Similar behaviour is found for some known bicyclic diaziridines, and this is also discussed together with some known 13C shift variations in other diaziridines and bicyclic hydrocarbons. It is suggested that the widely used data-base should include subset search facilities in order to minimize the risk of misassignments. This would allow specific effects, such as those of bond angles in cyclic compounds, to be taken into consideration.

In X-band Cherenkov amplifier driven by 0.8 MeV 6 kA electron beam, the gigawatt power in pulses with duration 70 ns is achieved. The coherence of output radiation is provided by division of the oversized interaction space on separate sections coupled with the electron beam only. The high gain of 47 dB (and accordingly narrow 1% bandwidth) are obtained with the regenerative regime of operation of BWA-modulator used as a pre-amplifier.

A measurement of the mass of the W boson is presented which is based on a sample of 5982 W → eνv decays observed in pp collisions at √s=1.8 TeV with the D∅ detector during the 1992-1993 run. From a fit to the transverse mass spectrum, combined with measurements of the Z boson mass, the W boson mass is measured to be MW=80.350±0.140(stat)±0.165(syst)±0.160(scale) GeV/c 2 . Detailed discussions of the determination of the absolute energy scale, the measured efficiencies, and all systematic uncertainties are presented.

First results of endoscopic applications of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for in vivo studies of human mucosa in respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary and genital tracts are presented. A novel endoscopic OCT (EOCT) system has been created that is based on the integration of a sampling arm of an all-optical-fiber interferometer into standard endoscopic devices using their biopsy channel to transmit low-coherence radiation to investigated tissue. We have studied mucous membranes of esophagus, larynx, stomach, urinary bladder, uterine cervix and endometrium as typical localization for carcinomatous processes. Images of tumor tissues versus healthy tissues have been recorded and analyzed. Violations of well-defined stratified healthy mucosa structure in cancered tissue is distinctly seen by EOCT, thus making this technique promising for early diagnosis of tumors and precise guiding of excisional biopsy.© (1998) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. A key problem for endoscopic application of optical coherence tomography (OCT) is to provide a reliable and convenient access of probing low-coherence radiation to the surface of internal organs. Here, the authors describe the design and performance of their OCT systems integrated in standard endoscopes, operating in parallel with them and thus enhancing essentially the capabilities of endoscopy as a whole. Implementation of an extended flexible arm of the OCT interferometer to provide access to the studied tissue is based on the usage of polarization maintaining fibers for transportation of the low coherence light. The sampling arm of the fiber interferometer is terminated by a newly developed miniaturized electro-mechanical unit that controls the lateral scanning process. The probe beam swinging on the tissue surface approaches 2 mm. As a source of radiation the authors employ a superluminescent diode with a central frequency of 830 nm, bandwidth of 30 nm, and power of 1.5 mW. In-depth scanning is performed with an integrated piezo-optical modulator that introduces the difference in the length arms of the interferometer. With a scanning rate of 30 cm/s and an image depth of 3 mm, an OCT picture is acquired in approximately 1 s. This rate is sufficient to eliminate the effect of internal organ movement on the image quality. The electro-mechanical scanner has a size that fits the diameter and the curvature radius of an endoscope biopsy channel.

Experiments on 528 pregnant rats studied the specific features of uterine contractility in pre- (7.2%), postimplantation (5.69%), and intrauterine (1.14%) fetal deaths and in ablatio placentae (0.57%) which spontaneously occurred in this group of animals. By applying the multiparametric approach and the methods of the image recognition theory, the authors showed that despite its onset periods, fetal deaths resulted in reduced uterine contractility. It is concluded that the present study provides experimental evidence for the development of weak clinical uterine activity in fetal death in different periods of pregnancy. At the same time, myometrial responses to oxytocin decrease.

Main reasons of errors and methods of their correction at every stage of preparations and performance of intracavitary radiotherapy with Cf-252, i.e. in measurement of radiation characteristics for Cf-252 source, in determination of dose distribution from single Cf-252 sources, at insertion of sources to the cavity and their fixation and in calculation of dose distribution for actual topographic and anatomic features of the patients, have been studied.

Radiotherapeutic unit “ANET-V” is the first Russian unit for HDR Cf-252 brachytherapy. We developed in details the technique of intracavitary brachytherapy of different parts of the rectum, based on remote afterloading of high activity sources under direct visual control. Intracavitary brachytherapy in different volumes and with different aim was done to 61 patients with rectal cancer at the age of 36 to 68. Single dose on tumor base was 5–10 Gy and total dose was 10–50 Gy, RBE — 3. The diagnosis of all the patients was verified morphologically. Staging was performed according to the international classification ( The tumor localized in the anal part- 2 patients, in the lower-ampulla part of the rectum in 26 cases; in the medium-ampulla — 13 cases; in the upper-ampulla part — 12 patients and in rectosigmoid region 8 cases). We have not diagnosed any complications during pre-irradiation preparation (that is no trauma of proctal mucosa and tumor, no bleeding and perforation of proctal wall). There were no complications during intracavitary brachytherpy and following full-term of the treatment, i.e. our patients did not reveal bleeding, perforation of rectum wall, acute radiation damage of proctal mucosa and proctal wall. Anal sphincter function was not broken. Premedication is not needed. The main dosimetric and technical characteristics of “ANET-V” unit were investigated in clinic. We have designed a set of technical means for intracavitary brachytherapy in rectal tumors. Equipment has patents, the Gold Medal of the World exhibition “Brussels Evrika-94”.

Clinico-statistical analysis of the treatment results of 624 injured persons for the period from 1990 till 1995 year was conducted. In 509 (81.6%) of them the combined closed thoracic trauma was revealed, in 15 (18.4%)--the isolated closed affection of the skull, thorax, abdomen and extremities have occurred. The anatomic-functional model of the injury severity and prognosis outcome estimation was elaborated, an optimal timing and surgical treatment methods of the thoracic cage bones injury was substantiated, what have promoted to lower lethality from 50%--in injured persons, operated on without taking into account the trauma severity and prognosis outcome, to 31.6%--in operated on in the postponed order.

This study reports the first measurement of the azimuthal decorrelation between jets with pseudorapidity separation up to five units. The data were accumulated using the D{\O}detector during the 1992--1993 collider run of the Fermilab Tevatron at $\sqrt{s}=$ 1.8 TeV. These results are compared to next--to--leading order (NLO) QCD predictions and to two leading--log approximations (LLA) where the leading--log terms are resummed to all orders in $\alpha_{\scriptscriptstyle S}$. The final state jets as predicted by NLO QCD show less azimuthal decorrelation than the data. The parton showering LLA Monte Carlo {\small HERWIG} describes the data well; an analytical LLA prediction based on BFKL resummation shows more decorrelation than the data., Comment: 6 pages with 4 figures, all uuencoded and gzipped

We present results on the search for the top quark in {ital p{bar p}} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 13.5{plus_minus}1.6 pb{sup {minus}1}. We have considered {ital t{bar t}} production in the standard model using electron and muon dilepton decay channels ({ital t{bar t}}{r_arrow}{ital e}{mu}+jets, {ital ee}+jets, and {mu}{mu}+jets) and single-lepton decay channels ({ital t{bar t}}{r_arrow}{ital e}+jets and {mu}+jets) with and without tagging of {ital b} quark jets. An analysis of these data optimized for top quark masses below 140 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} gives a lower top quark mass limit of 128 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}. An analysis optimized for higher top quark masses yields 9 events with an expected background of 3.8{plus_minus}0.9. If we assume that the excess is due to {ital t{bar t}} production, and assuming a top quark mass of 180 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}, we obtain a cross section of 8.2{plus_minus}5.1 pb.

Monoclonal antibodies (monAT) against both native (TA5, TB12) and denatured (TB33, TB35) plant toxin ML1 from Viscum album have been obtained. The interaction of monAT against native toxin with its isoforms ML2 and ML3 was investigated. It was shown that monAT TA5 to A-chain of ML1 toxin cross-reacted with ML2 and ML3 isoforms. TA5 did not inhibit enzyme activity of A-chain in cell-free rabbit reticulocyte system. It was shown that monAT TB12 reacted with galactose-binding site of B-subunit. Both monAT had no cross-reactions with plant toxin ricin. The binding constants for TA5 with ML1, ML2, ML3 respectively were 4.3.10(7) M-1, 1.2.10(7) M-1, and 0.3.10(7) M-1. The binding constants for TB12 were 2.10(7) M-1 with ML1 toxin, and more than 10(6) M-1 with ML2 and ML3. The nature of heterogeneity in ML toxin family is discussed. Test-systems for ML1 determination in different V. album extracts are suggested.

We have studied the effect of actin skeleton depolymerisation induced by C2 toxin on protein synthesis in 3T3 cells. The toxin that was purified from culture medium of Clostridium botulinum type C was shown to specifically ADP-ribosylate actin in vitro and in vivo. Cells exposed to C2 toxin were rounded off, which was accompanied by disappearance of stress fibers. The rate of total protein synthesis decreased two-three times in the treated cells. This correlated with the reduction in amount of polyribosomes. The rates of specific protein synthesis were compared using 2D electrophoresis of pulse-labeled proteins. Dramatic changes were observed in the synthesis of a small group of cellular proteins. Our results indicate that actin filament depolymerization affects gene expression at the level of translation and/or through the control of mRNA concentrations.

The DO collaboration reports on a search for the Standard Model top quark in pbar-p collisions at Sqrt(s)=1.8TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, with an integrated luminosity of approximately 50pb-1. We have searched for t-tbar production in the dilepton and single-lepton decay channels, with and without tagging of b-quark jets. We observed 17 events with an expected background of 3.8+/-0.6 events. The probability for an upward fluctuation of the background to produce the observed signal is 2.0E-6 (equivalent to 4.6 standard deviations). The kinematic properties of the excess events are consistent with top quark decay. Actin filaments are major determinants of cell shape, motility and adhesion, which control important biological processes including embryonic development and wound healing. These processes are associated with changes in actin assembly, which is regulated by controlling the balance between polymerized and non-polymerized actin. To maintain a significant pool of non-polymerized actin, mechanism(s) linking actin synthesis to its state of polymerization were proposed. We have studied this relationship between actin synthesis and organization by modulating actin assembly using different drugs. Unassembled actin was increased in 3T3 cells using either the Clostridium botulinum C2 toxin, which ADP-ribosylates actin, or by latrunculin A, a Red Sea sponge product, which binds monomeric actin. The synthesis of actin was dramatically reduced in these cells owing to a concomitant decrease in actin RNA level. Similar results were obtained with HeLa cells grown in both monolayer and in suspension, suggesting that cell shape changes associated with drug treatment are not the primary cause for the effect on actin synthesis. In contrast, the scrape-loading of 3T3 cells with phalloidin, a stabilizer of polymerized actin that increased the level of assembled actin, resulted in elevated actin synthesis and RNA content. The expression of vinculin, a major component of adhesion plaques and cell-cell junctions, which is involved in actin-membrane associations, was altered in parallel with that of actin in cells treated with these drugs. The decrease in actin RNA resulted from destabilization of actin mRNA in cells where unassembled actin level was elevated. This is suggested by the unchanged transcription of actin in isolated nuclei from drug-treated cells, and by demonstrating that actin mRNA was degraded faster in cells after C2 toxin treatment than in control cells. This feedback control mechanism is mainly confined to the cytoplasm, as it remained active in enucleated cells. The results suggest the existence of an autoregulatory pathway for the expression of actin and other microfilament-associated proteins which is linked to the state of actin polymerization in the cell.

The He(I) photoelectron spectra of five bicyclic N -chlorodiaziridines ( 6–10 ) and three N -chlorooxaziridines ( 14–16 ), as well as of the corresponding N-H compounds ( 1–5 and 11,13 ), have been recorded and analysed using AM1 calculations. The N -chlorodiaziridines show exo-endo isomerism; however, only one endo isomer ( 10a ) is sufficiently stable for the measurement. The N -chlorooxaziridines are more stable than their N-H precursors. The compounds are characterized by three non-bonding orbitals n + NN , n − NN and n Cl ( N -chlorodiaziridines); n − NO , n Cl and n O ( N -chlorooxaziridines). These orbitals give rise to the first three ionization bands of the compounds. The energy separation of the two n NN MOs of the exo isomers 6b–10b ( Δϵ ≈ 0.3 eV) is smaller than in the corresponding N-H compounds 1–5 ( Δϵ ≈ 0.6 eV), while in the endo isomer 10a ( Δϵ ≈ 1.2 eV) it is larger than in 5 . In the oxaziridines, replacement of the hydrogen atom by a chlorine atom leads to a small stabilization of the n O orbital. These findings can be interpreted by vicinal n X σ∗ N-Hal interactions (X = N or O).

The DØ detector is a large general purpose detector for the study of short-distance phenomena in high energy antiproton-proton collisions, now in operation at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The detector focusses upon the detection of electrons, muons, jets and missing transverse momentum. We describe the design and performance of the major elements of the detector, including the tracking chambers, transition radiation detector, liquid argon calorimetry and muon detection. The associated electronics, triggering systems and data acquisition systems are presented. The global mechanical, high voltage, and experiment monitoring and control systems which support the detector are described. We also discuss the design and implementation of software and software support systems that are specific to DØ. © 1994.

Principle and method for gravity estimation of wounds, as well as the efficiency index of treatment of breathing and circulatory disorders in patients with chest gunshot injuries were elaborated on the basis of integral body rheography with mathematical modelling. The application of this method gives the possibility to make an opportune estimation and prognostication of the gravity of clinic outcome of chest gunshot injuries, choose the most rational scheme of treatment of breathing and circulatory disorders. The application of integral body rheography increases the quality of secondary surgical care at the phases of medical evacuation.

A high-power microwave oscillator is realized experimentally, employing a relativistic traveling-wave tube with a feedback circuit closed by tunable Bragg waveguide reflectors. A gigawatt-pulse power level is attained in the oscillator in the 3-cm wavelength range, which is maintained when the carrier frequency is tuned in a range of about 5%.

On the basis of results of studies on experimental substantiation of MAC for miral in soil it has been found out, that the sub-threshold miral amounts according to the water-migrational, air-migrational, translocational and general sanitary indices of harmfulness equal 0.03, 3, 0.03 and 0.15 mg/kg respectively. Therefore, water-migrational and translocational indices are the limiting indices of harmfulness for miral. 0.03 mg per 1 kg of absolutely dry soil is recommended for miral MAC according to the acting substance.

An instrumental-calculation method of assessment of an absorbed dose of radiation in the synovial tissue of the knee joint in radionuclide therapy with 198Au using directly measured topometric parameters was used for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. A group of 294 knee joint of 138 patients was considered by way of a retrospective analysis. Dosimetric indices in all cases (except stage IV arthritis) showed values which were not contrary to clinical assessment of the patients: status after therapy.

We have answered the PAC question ( Demonstrate the jet energy resolution of your proposed detector by studying decays Z {yields} jet + jet and Z{prime} {yields} jet + jet, M{sub Z{prime}} = 1 TeV.'') using a general program called SSCSIM. This program is a tool for investigating simple questions involving the relations between detector parameters and physics capabilities of a detector. A different package called ANLSIM developed by our colleagues at Argonne has also been used to answer this question. The results as expected are very similar. In this note we will try to document our procedures. Our tentative conclusion from this study is that physics induced effects, out-of-cone fluctuations and underlying event fluctuations, dominate the resolution. Pushing the detector performance to the limits of technology improves the effective resolution by at most 20%. 20 refs., 6 figs., 5 tabs.

On the basis of studies aimed at the substantiation of MAC for cyclophos in soil it was established, that subthreshold amounts of cyclophos according to the water-migration and air-migration indexes of harmfulness equal 0.03 mg per 1 kg of absolutely dry soil, according to the general sanitary index--0.1 mg/kg. Since cyclophos destruction period in plants is relatively short (8 days), there is no danger of translocation of the pesticide from soil in amounts exceeding the maximum allowable level for cyclophos in food stuffs. The pesticide migration in the system soil-plant was not determined. The water migration and air-migration indexes are the limiting indexes of harmfulness for cyclophos. 0.03 mg/kg is recommended as the maximum allowable concentration of cyclophos in soil.

The paper is concerned with the problem of stereological volumenometry applied to the problems of ultrasound topometry of the thyroid. The organ surfaces are tightened on the basis of information obtained from echotomographic films using a method of cubic spline-interpolation, parametric function setting and methods of computer graphics. Images of sections can be obtained with an arbitrary step and an angle of inclination to the organ longitudinal axis. The main sources of errors of the method were estimated, and their numeric values were given.

The paper is devoted to the solution of problems related to clinical dosimetry in radiation therapy with open radionuclides, i.e. technical methodological problems of measurement of an absorbed therapeutic dose of radiation in targets in volume distribution of a radionuclide. The developed methods and means of measurement include a large activity radiometer for measuring therapeutic and diagnostic activities, a topometric ultrasound unit (Aloka) and software. The main features of the method were illustrated on a clinical example of the assessment of an absorbed therapeutic dose of 131I radiation in thyroid tissue during therapy of patients with thyrotoxicosis. The accuracy of the method was assessed.
