BackgroundWhether racial/ethnic disparities in Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk may be explained by ambient fine particles (PM2.5) has not been studied.MethodsWe conducted a prospective, population-based study on a cohort of Black (n=481) and White (n=6004) older women (aged 65-79) without dementia at enrollment (1995-98). Cox models accounting for competing risk were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) for racial/ethnic disparities in AD (1996-2010) defined by DSM-IV and the association with time-varying annual average PM2.5 (1999-2010) estimated by spatiotemporal model.ResultsOver an average follow-up of 8.3 (±3.5) years with 158 incident cases (21 in Black women), the racial disparities in AD risk (range of adjusted HRBlack women = 1.85-2.41) observed in various models could not be explained by geographic region, age, socioeconomic characteristics, lifestyle factors, cardiovascular risk factors, and hormone therapy assignment. Estimated PM2.5 exposure was higher in Black (14.38±2.21 µg/m 3) than in White (12.55±2.76 µg/m 3) women, and further adjustment for the association between PM2.5 and AD (adjusted HRPM2.5 = 1.18-1.28) slightly reduced the racial disparities by 2-6% (HRBlack women = 1.81-2.26). The observed association between PM2.5 and AD risk was ~2 times greater in Black (HRPM2.5 = 2.10-2.60) than in White (HRPM2.5 = 1.07-1.15) women (range of interaction Ps:

We consider games with two antagonistic players --- \'Elo\"ise (modelling a program) and Ab\'elard (modelling a byzantine environment) --- and a third, unpredictable and uncontrollable player, that we call Nature. Motivated by the fact that the usual probabilistic semantics very quickly leads to undecidability when considering either infinite game graphs or imperfect-information, we propose two alternative semantics that leads to decidability where the probabilistic one fails: one based on counting and one based on topology.

We consider the motion of a finite though large number $N$ of hard spheres in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$. Particles move freely until they experience elastic collisions. We use our recent theory of Compensated Integrability in order to estimate how much the particles are deviated by collisions. Our result, which is expressed in terms of hodographs, tells us that only $O(N^2)$ collisions are significant.

Mathematics - Analysis of PDEs - Abstract
We have shown in a recent collaboration that the Cauchy problem for the multi-dimensional Burgers equation is well-posed when the initial data u(0) is taken in the Lebesgue space L 1 (R n), and more generally in L p (R n). We investigate here the situation where u(0) is a bounded measure instead, focusing on the case n = 2. This is motivated by the description of the asymptotic behaviour of solutions with integrable data, as t $\rightarrow$ +$\infty$. MSC2010: 35F55, 35L65. Notations. We denote $\times$ p the norm in Lebesgue L p (R n). The space of bounded measure over R m is M (R m) and its norm is denoted $\times$ M. The Dirac mass at X $\in$ R n is $\delta$ X or $\delta$ x=X. If $\nu$ $\in$ M (R m) and $\mu$ $\in$ M (R q), then $\nu$ $\otimes$ $\mu$ is the measure over R m+q uniquely defined by $\nu$ $\otimes$ $\mu$, $\psi$ = $\nu$, f $\mu$, g whenever $\psi$(x, y) $\not\equiv$ f (x)g(y). The closed halves of the real line are denoted R + and R --. * U.M.P.A., UMR CNRS-ENSL \# 5669. 46 all{\'e}e d'Italie

We study alternating automata with qualitative semantics over infinite binary trees: alternation means that two opposing players construct a decoration of the input tree called a run, and the qualitative semantics says that a run of the automaton is accepting if almost all branches of the run are accepting. In this paper we prove a positive and a negative result for the emptiness problem of alternating automata with qualitative semantics. The positive result is the decidability of the emptiness problem for the case of B\"uchi acceptance condition. An interesting aspect of our approach is that we do not extend the classical solution for solving the emptiness problem of alternating automata, which first constructs an equivalent non-deterministic automaton. Instead, we directly construct an emptiness game making use of imperfect information. The negative result is the undecidability of the emptiness problem for the case of co-B\"uchi acceptance condition. This result has two direct consequences: the undecidability of monadic second-order logic extended with the qualitative path-measure quantifier, and the undecidability of the emptiness problem for alternating tree automata with non-zero semantics, a recently introduced probabilistic model of alternating tree automata.

Emerging evidence highlights a critical relationship between gut microbiota and neurocognitive development. Excessive consumption of sugar and other unhealthy dietary factors during early life developmental periods yields changes in the gut microbiome as well as neurocognitive impairments. However, it is unclear whether these two outcomes are functionally connected. Here we explore whether excessive early life consumption of added sugars negatively impacts memory function via the gut microbiome. Rats were given free access to a sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) during the adolescent stage of development. Memory function and anxiety-like behavior were assessed during adulthood and gut bacterial and brain transcriptome analyses were conducted. Taxa-specific microbial enrichment experiments examined the functional relationship between sugar-induced microbiome changes and neurocognitive and brain transcriptome outcomes. Chronic early life sugar consumption impaired adult hippocampal-dependent memory function without affecting body weight or anxiety-like behavior. Adolescent SSB consumption during adolescence also altered the gut microbiome, including elevated abundance of two species in the genus Parabacteroides (P. distasonis and P. johnsonii) that were negatively correlated with hippocampal function. Transferred enrichment of these specific bacterial taxa in adolescent rats impaired hippocampal-dependent memory during adulthood. Hippocampus transcriptome analyses revealed that early life sugar consumption altered gene expression in intracellular kinase and synaptic neurotransmitter signaling pathways, whereas Parabacteroides microbial enrichment altered gene expression in pathways associated with metabolic function, neurodegenerative disease, and dopaminergic signaling. Collectively these results identify a role for microbiota "dysbiosis" in mediating the detrimental effects of early life unhealthy dietary factors on hippocampal-dependent memory function.

Context. The study of star formation is extremely challenging due to the lack of complete and clean samples of young, nearby clusters, and star forming regions. The recent Gaia DR2 catalogue complemented with the deep, ground based COSMIC DANCe catalogue offers a new database of unprecedented accuracy to revisit the membership of clusters and star forming regions. The 30 Myr open cluster IC 4665 is one of the few well-known clusters of this age and it is an excellent target where to test evolutionary models and study planetary formation. Aims. We aim to provide a comprehensive membership analysis of IC 4665 and to study the following properties: empirical isochrones, distance, magnitude distribution, present-day system mass function, and spatial distribution. Methods. We use the Gaia DR2 catalogue together with the DANCe catalogue to look for members using a probabilistic model of the distribution of the observable quantities in both the cluster and background populations. Results. We obtain a final list of 819 candidate members which cover a 12.4 magnitude range (7 < J < 19.4). We find that 50% are new candidates, and we estimate a conservative contamination rate of 20%. This unique sample of members allows us to obtain a present-day system mass function in the range of 0.02-6 Msun, which reveals a number of details not seen in previous studies. In addition, they favour a spherically symmetric spatial distribution for this young open cluster. Conclusions. Our membership analysis represents a significant increase in the quantity and quality (low-contamination) with respect to previous studies. As such, it offers an excellent opportunity to revisit other fundamental parameters such as the age.

In the recent paper \cite{SER}, the second author proved a divergence-quasiconcavity inequality for the following functional $ \mathbb{D}(A)=\int_{\mathbb{T}^n} det(A(x))^{\frac{1}{n-1}}\,dx$ defined on the space of $p$-summable positive definite matrices with zero divergence. We prove that this implies the weak upper semicontinuity of the functional $\mathbb{D}(\cdot)$ if and only if $p>\frac{n}{n-1}$., Comment: 16 pages

Forming perceptual groups and individuating objects in visual scenes is an essential step towards visual intelligence. This ability is thought to arise in the brain from computations implemented by bottom-up, horizontal, and top-down connections between neurons. However, the relative contributions of these connections to perceptual grouping are poorly understood. We address this question by systematically evaluating neural network architectures featuring combinations bottom-up, horizontal, and top-down connections on two synthetic visual tasks, which stress low-level "Gestalt" vs. high-level object cues for perceptual grouping. We show that increasing the difficulty of either task strains learning for networks that rely solely on bottom-up connections. Horizontal connections resolve straining on tasks with Gestalt cues by supporting incremental grouping, whereas top-down connections rescue learning on tasks with high-level object cues by modifying coarse predictions about the position of the target object. Our findings dissociate the computational roles of bottom-up, horizontal and top-down connectivity, and demonstrate how a model featuring all of these interactions can more flexibly learn to form perceptual groups., Comment: Published in ICLR 2020

We consider the motion of a finite though large number of particles in the whole space R n. Particles move freely until they experience pairwise collisions. We use our recent theory of divergence-controlled positive symmetric tensors in order to establish two estimates regarding the set of collisions. The only information needed from the initial data is the total mass and the total energy.
