Background and Aims: Anaesthesiologists have been in the forefront of managing patients of the novel coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) globally. The rearrangement of duties of anaesthesiology professionals and trainees along with the enforced containment measures like cessation of gatherings (for classroom teaching), cancellation of large number of elective cases and restricted number of procedures that are being performed have adversely affected the training of anaesthesiology postgraduate students across the country. Methods: An electronic survey to assess the effect of the measures taken by hospitals due to COVID-19 on postgraduate teaching was undertaken using a validated questionnaire. We used snowball sampling, and the survey invitation with the web link was shared through freeware WhatsApp. The participation in the survey was voluntary and anonymity was maintained. Data obtained from the responses was collated and analysed. Results: A total of 595 anaesthesiology postgraduate students (males = 298, females = 297) responded to the survey. Majority of the participants reported a steep depreciation (>50%) in the quality and quantity of academic activities (57.47%), major changes or cessation of clinical rotations (73.61%) and inability to conduct thesis-related cases (55.29%). In total, 56.97% of the students reported the rise in usage of online platforms like "Zoom" for conduct of routine academic activities. Conclusion: Teaching and training schedules of anaesthesiology postgraduate students have undergone major modifications following the COVID 19 pandemic. Resourcefulness and ingenuity in teaching methods is the need of the hour to sustain the desired standards of training courses and to maintain the quality of the budding anaesthesiologists. A variety of factors affect the success of music therapy students in practica. Many music therapy students may have invisible illnesses or invisible disabilities (II/ID) that affect their work. II/ID have physical or psychological effects but are not apparent to an observer. Such illnesses may include chronic illnesses, mental illnesses, and developmental disabilities. Although researchers have studied the success of post-secondary students with II/ID and the success of music therapy students without II/ID, there is a lack of research on music therapy students who identify with having II/ID. This researcher used an exploratory online survey to investigate the prevalence of II/ID among music therapy students and how it may affect their success in music therapy practica. Quantitative responses were compiled and analyzed into frequencies and percentages, and open-ended responses were coded and analyzed for patterns and themes. Results indicated that music therapy students with II/ID have various reasons for disclosure or nondisclosure. Some music therapy students with II/ID required accommodations, while many did not. Additionally, the effects of II/ID on music therapy practica students included physical, psychosocial, and cognitive symptoms, which led to various choices for disclosure/nondisclosure and the request/use of individualized accommodations. Music therapy students with II/ID self-reported that making decisions regarding appropriate disclosure and determining their need for accommodations or not allowed them to be more successful in practica. Most doctors working in New Zealand general practice undertake vocational training through the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. We aimed to explore general practice registrar views on their academic learning needs during and following vocational training. An online survey of all current NZ GP trainees in 2019 was completed by 314 registrars (54% response rate). The majority (88%, 275/314) were completing RNZCGP Fellowship only, and of these half (55%, 152/275) were planning a further postgraduate qualification. A minority (12%, 33/275) indicated a desire to undertake a masters or PhD degree. Almost all (99%, 310/314) intended to work in general practice; 9% (8/314) intending to also work as rural hospital doctors. The five most common areas of interest for further training were clinical skills (68%), practice-based teaching (66%), specific clinical conditions (63%), age or life-stage specific (47%) and non-clinical areas (41%). There is a considerable gap between completing RNZCGP Fellowship, intending to undertake further (formal postgraduate) education and actually enrolling. This is concerning given the need for lifelong learning and critical evaluation of practice and health service delivery. The future New Zealand general practice workforce needs GPs to be diverse and highly skilled members or leaders of expert teams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ethical thinking in music therapy is a vital aspect of the profession. However, little is published on the subject of ethics in the music therapy academic setting. Therefore, this article explores the complex issues of ethics and ethical thinking in music therapy education from the perspective of two music therapists who have held various positions within academics in music therapy. The purpose of this article is to encourage integrity within music therapy education and to draw attention to the complex ethical issues within music therapy academics. Four points are described for music therapy educators: (1) Assess positions of power, (2) Explore your adaptability, (3) Assess possible infringement of rights, and (4) Consider cultural bias in your responses. These points are offered as recommendations inserted into the Dileo Model of Ethical Thinking for Music Therapists for people in academia when faced with ethical dilemmas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global pandemic that has modified all social and, especially, learning instances. The purpose of this study was to determine the perception of final-year nursing students at a university in southern Chile regarding the impact of the pandemic on their learning, and consequently on their quality of life, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a qualitative study. The research was conducted on 14 nursing students who were selected from a university located in the province of Talca, Maule Region, Chile. Data collection was done through semi-structured interviews conducted during July and September 2021. The data were analyzed using the inductive logic of theoretical categorization; this process was assisted by the Nvivo 10 program. RESULTS: Two mega categories were generated that accounted for the nursing students' experience during the COVID-19 pandemic: objective factors category and subjective factors category. Six subcategories were derived from these two categories: free time, social relationships, learning from practice, physical exercise, eating habits, and emotional state. CONCLUSION: The research findings indicate that the students, in addition to feeling upset about not being able to do the internship, also feel that they have not been able to acquire all the knowledge necessary for their training and professional development, since the virtual classes fail to deliver adequate learning as they lack the practical component that is so important in their careers. This has repercussions in the physical, social, and psychological areas, affecting their quality of life.

OBJECTIVE Academic training programs for mental health professionals rarely include comprehensive instruction on trauma, consequently leaving clinicians inadequately prepared to provide trauma treatment. The present study sought to: (a) ascertain what percentage of participants had received training in complex trauma and dissociation; (b) examine pre- and posttraining differences in knowledge related to complex trauma populations; and (c) investigate changes in participants' competence and empathy in working with survivors. METHOD We examined self-reported changes in knowledge, competence, and empathy regarding individuals with complex trauma among mental health professionals who attended a complex trauma training workshop. Participants provided feedback about previous trauma training experience and areas of additional trauma training that they perceived would be beneficial. RESULTS Prior to completing the program, 68% of participants reported feeling inadequately trained to assess trauma and 75% felt inadequately trained to treat trauma. Ten percent had not received training in complex trauma and 30% had not received training in treating patients with dissociative symptoms. Participants showed significant increases in knowledge and self-reported competence following the training. They suggested that learning about dissociation and dissociative disorders was the most helpful information gained and that learning more techniques and skills for complex trauma populations would improve their ability to treat this group. CONCLUSIONS The majority of participants felt inadequately trained to treat clients who have experienced complex trauma and experienced dissociation. They reported the trauma training as beneficial in that it increased their sense of knowledge and competence about treating trauma-exposed individuals. Dear EditorOn July 21 (Sunday) and 23 (Tuesday) 2019, I had an opportunity to hold another workshop titled “How to write a scientific paper?” for Ph.D. students in Microbiology Department, Basic Sciences Faculty, the Islamic Azad University, Shahr-e-Qods Branch, Tehran, Iran. I received brilliant feedback from the participants encouraging me to publish this letter to the editor. The difficult work of writing is an art like rasping and grinding a rough diamond to have a polished and smooth diamond (1) or like making a film (2). Publishing peer-reviewed papers is a criterion for evaluating academic professionals and is an effective means of forming an academic career and resume (3).As we know since the ancient era, the published texts are used as public official means to communicate with diverse people and populations. According to the latest archeological studies, the first handwriting belongs to 10400 years ago discovered in Baluchestan Province, the southeast of Iran (4).The primitive means of scripts have evolved and now we have high-tech tools to publish different types of scripts as softcopies and hardcopies, as well as traditional and online publications (4, 5). English as an international language may connect all people around the world. Therefore, publishing scholarly papers in English language journals promotes the visibility and citation of the papers (5, 6).A strong scientific paper needs a clear roadmap, a well-designed study, and an up-to-date quality proposal. Blurry hypothesis, poor-designed study, biases, inappropriate sample size (e.g., very small and limited populations or samples), and wrong or insufficient statistical analyses are the most common reasons for the rejection of papers (6-8).I as a non-native English-speaking author and reviewer believe that the non-native English-speaking authors should think, imagine, and write their manuscripts in English. Many young non-native English-speaking authors write their manuscripts in their native language and then translate into English. This is very harmful because it makes your manuscript of poor quality in academic English language, results in more probability of rejection (7). Consequently, in this challenge, the authors should prepare a well-planned manuscript with a strong and clear hypothesis (it goes back to the proposal) and relevant aims. Moreover, proper statistical analyses and calculations, correspondent methodology, appropriate and precise conclusion, sharp and clear figures, and well-designed and self-explanatory tables augment the opportunity of a manuscript for acceptance (Figure 1) (4, 6, 7, 9, 10). AcknowledgementsI have special thanks to Islamic Azad University, Shahr-e-Qods Branch, Tehran, Iran for approving the perfomance of the workshop on “How to write a scientific paper?”. Conflict of InterestThe authors confirm that there are no known conflicts of interest associated with this publication, and there has been no significant financial support for this work that could have influenced its outcome.

- Abstract
In Cuban universities, the design of virtual master's degree academic programs from the implementation of the Distance Education Model for Higher Education is today one of the strategic objectives oriented towards the virtualization of professional training. Hence, the objective of the article is to present the results of the practical validation of a methodological conception for the professional improvement at a distance of the faculty of these programs, based on active methodologies from collaborative practices mediated by interaction and socialization in a digital ecosystem such as technological support for its applicability. From predominantly qualitative research with a descriptive approach, scientific methods of the theoretical level such as inductive-deductive, analytical-synthetic and modeling were used; and from the empirical level, the case study with complementary methods such as participatory observation, the survey, and the analysis of the products of the activity. The results are expressed in the transformations of the traditional improvement process, in the suitability of the teacher and his pedagogical practice, by measuring the impact of the transfer of new knowledge in real time to the design of master's programs for their virtual offer. It is concluded that remote professional improvement from the validated conception demonstrates its relevance, viability and adaptability to similar scenarios at the University of Matanzas., Nas universidades cubanas, a concepção de programas académicos de mestrado virtual a partir da implementação do Modelo de Educação a Distância para o Ensino Superior é hoje um dos objectivos estratégicos orientados para a virtualização da formação profissional. This CU was created in 2017 to fill a gap in the academic degree - the need for a bridge between fundamental sciences (1st year) and conservation-restoration diagnosis (3rd year). For this reason, ICS was designed with the main goal of teaching 2nd year students how to look at, approach and solve problems of Cultural Heritage, through the combination of reflexive thinking and object-led analysis. ICS was first designed by an expert in Conservation Science with academic background in physics. However, from the perception of the students' struggle to understand the purpose of ICS subjects to their future professional activity, a professor with expertise in Conservation and Restoration was invited in 2019 to work together in the re-design of the CU, through an integrated approach between the two experts. ICS was then revised with the introduction of new perspectives and topics, as well as new communication routes to students. This work highlights this partnership as a good practice methodology to involve conservation-restoration students into science, focusing on the ICS classes specifically dedicated to radiation, colour, and museum lighting. publishersversion published

The aim of this study was to analyze the meanings and assessments of ethics and politics articulated in the fields of academic training and professional praxis by students, teachers, professionals, and beneficiaries of community projects in Ecuador. This was done to enrich the debate being conducted by the Latin American Network of Training in Community Psychology (CP) regarding the limited presence, relevance, and development of the ethical and political dimensions in CP training programs and their impact on professional practice. This exploratory mixed methods study comprised the administration of semi-structured interviews to 5 teachers and 5 psychologists working in community projects along with the establishment of 2 focus groups in which 15 students took part and 5 focus groups in which 29 beneficiaries of community projects participated. In addition, the presence of the ethical and political dimensions in 25 curricula of 2 Ecuadorian universities was analyzed. A complementary analysis revealed that, both in the training process and in professional practice, teachers, students, professionals, and beneficiaries express nuclei of meanings and ethical and political assessments consistent with the foundations of CP, but they remain limited in terms of development and practical implementation, due to the insufficient degree of reflection on the subject and the immature state of the discipline in Ecuador. Therefore, the main challenge is to work on constructing the deontological dimension within CP, which should manifest itself through codes and guides to facilitate and orient both training processes and professional practice. - Abstract
Health professionals should be concerned with the waste generated by their activities, and develop specific skills and abilities since graduation, requiring a conscious positioning and willingness to collaborate in the search for solutions. The objective of the study was to evaluate the knowledge of physical therapy academics about health care waste (RSS). This is a descriptive, quantitative cross-sectional exploratory study with physiotherapy academics from a Higher Education Institution, located in Salvador, Bahia. A total of 53 academics participated, data were collected through a structured questionnaire, and analyzed through Epi Info 6.04 Software to describe the absolute and percentage frequencies. As results found: 62.3% are unaware of the RSS ranking; 52.8% are aware of their potential for risk and 62.3% are not aware of segregation. It is concluded that there is a lack of knowledge of many physical therapy students about SSR, reflecting the need to seek ways to sensitize future physiotherapists to develop a broader understanding of environmental issues. This requires the training of qualified and sensitized professionals to the importance of proper management of these wastes, with responsibility and ethical commitment to the health of society and the environment. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal problems are a common health problem with professional and ergonomic features. This study's purpose was to investigate the musculoskeletal problems distribution and related factors among academicians. METHODS: This study was performed by using a personal and professional information questionnaire, the Extended Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form. RESULTS: The study was completed with 142 academicians (89 female, 53 male). Mean age was 39.91 ± 8.90 years, physical activity level was 1067.31 ± 1866.95 MET-minute/week, and work time was 13.73 ± 9.15 years. Neck and lower back pain were mostly seen in academicians and their incidence was equal (63.4%). The most experienced pain the previous year was neck pain (39.4%), and upper back pain is the most experienced pain today (19%). The body part that mostly caused the use of medication is neck pain (23%), and mostly caused limitation and sick-leave was low back in the past 12 months (respectively 19.7% and 9.2%). Gender, body mass index, weekly workload, physical activity level, and marital status have been determined to have an effect on musculoskeletal problems in academicians (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The most common musculoskeletal problems reported by academicians were in the upper back and neck regions, which have low level physical activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research describes the role of linguistic subjects in the humanistic education of information professionals. In the analysis of the social order and the professional demands of the students of Journalism, Social Communication and Information Sciences, the need to encourage the study of language becomes evident, since language becomes a fundamental instrument to promote intercultural dialogue as a guarantee of effectiveness of communicative practices. In the contemporary context, where more and more competent communication professionals are required, it is important to include linguistic subjects in the curricula of those professionals whom society demands to produce, manage and disseminate information and public communication. - Abstract
Multiple factors in the learning environment can encourage or impede student learning. Unanswered questions regarding the shared learning environment for graduate nursing and medical education and the desire for an ongoing improvement process drove creation of an interprofessional collaborative and development of an Interprofessional Clinical Learning Environment Report Card (I-CLERC) at one U.S. academic medical center. The I-CLERC offers a process and a product for institutionalizing a shared assessment tool to inform improvement efforts, track progress and promote accountability. In addition, it enhances interprofessional collaboration, with students and faculty from both nursing and medicine working together to define excellence, monitor performance, and identify areas for improvement in the shared clinical learning environment. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe development and implementation of an interdisciplinary, institutional collaborative for ongoing evaluation of the shared clinical learning environment. • All aspects of the clinical learning environment impact academic success and future practices as a health care professional. • Academic and practice leaders must commit to monitoring the shared clinical space that impacts learner outcomes. • Clinical learning environment evaluation offers an opportuniity for mutually beneficial, interprofessional collaborations. • Comparison data for nursing student experiences in the clinical learning environment are needed for improvement initiatives. The way in which individuals and groups explain poverty shapes how they relate to it. This paper inquires the beliefs of university students about the causes of poverty and analyses the relation of these beliefs with their professional training area. An assessment instrument that considers three type of attributions -individualist, socio-structural and fatalistic-, was administered to a sample of 448 advanced university students belonging to nine social sciences programs, aged between 19 and 42 years (M = 22.92; SD = 3.12). The results obtained indicate important variations in the explanations about poverty according to the professional training area. Students of economic sciences emphasized the importance of individual factors, psychology and law students tended to mixed explanations and sociology students showed a wide preference for socio-structural causes over individual and fatalistic causes. The implications of attributional process in the behavior of these future professionals towards economically disadvantaged populations are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Publishing in a high impact international journal is like a dream come true shared among many faculty, students, and graduate programs directors from different nationalities. This article aims at identifying the characteristics of authors who have published in high impact international journals. Specifically, the scope of this study was authors affiliated to prestigious graduate programs in Business Management, Accounting, and Tourism in Brazil. The research was conducted based on the Ministry of Education Evaluation Reports, authors' curricula, descriptive statistics and statistical tests. The tests indicated that there is no significant different between the average number of articles published per author with educational background in Brazil and abroad, at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels. We found that only the average number of publications by authors with full PhDs abroad is significantly higher than the average number of publications by authors who have a full doctorate in Brazil. The average number of publications of doctors who did part of their PhD training abroad was a grey area in our results, that neither differed from the average number of publications of those who earned a doctor degree exclusively in Brazil or entirely abroad.

Henrik Toft Sørensen1–3 1Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus N, Denmark; 2Department of Health Research and Policy, 3Stanford’s Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA Abstract: Many resources are invested in research training, but very little literature exists on predictors for a successful PhD and postdoctoral training outcome. A PhD program has two overall objectives: to extend knowledge about a hopefully important health topic and to provide extensive training to improve the PhD student’s skills through learning research methods and collaboration. A substantial number of PhD students may run into some kind of problem in the course of their PhD program. In this article, some determinants all starting with an “I” and indicative of a good PhD outcome are reported. The successful PhD student can be described as having an Interest in the PhD program, an Incentive for the program, and an Idea of what he or she wants to investigate, showing Initiative, and having high personal Integrity and good Interpersonal relationships. When these so-called I-determinants are present, the likelihood of success in a PhD program is high. More evidence is available for selection of candidates for postdoctoral appointments since it is known that the postdoctoral candidate has completed a PhD program, published papers in peer-reviewed journals, and received awarded grants. However, other characteristics determine a successful transition of the postdoctoral candidate into a research leader. These determinants are Identity, Independence and Image, Implementation ability in terms of being able to implement decisions and projects, working with Innovative and Important topics, having In-depth knowledge of the research topic, being Interactive and Integrated with the scientific community, and Internationally oriented. In conclusion, regardless of the framework of research, the personal characteristics of a researcher play a very important role in the quality of research. Application of some of the principles mentioned in this article might allow decision to reach a more evidence-based way to recruit PhD students and postdoctorals. INTRODUCTION Social media platforms, especially Twitter, are increasingly utilized across medical practice, education, and research. However, little is known about differences in social media use among physicians of varying specialties and its impact on recruitment of trainees. Our objective was to describe differences in social media use among vascular interventional proceduralists at academic training institutions. METHODS We identified institutions with training programs in vascular surgery (VS), interventional radiology (IR), and interventional cardiology (IC). Faculty providers were identified in each specialty at these institutions. A standardized search was used to identify non-anonymous social media profiles on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in September 2019. Influencers were defined as physicians with more than 1,000 Twitter followers. Follow ratio was defined as the number of followers divided by the number of accounts followed. Between-specialty differences were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 1,330 providers (n=454 VS, n=451 IR, n=425 IC) were identified across 47 institutions in 27 states. Across all physicians, a minority of providers utilize social media (Facebook: 24.9%, n=331; Instagram: 10.8%, n=143; Twitter: 18.0%, n=240). VS were significantly more likely to use Instagram (p=0.001) but there was not a significant difference in utilization of Facebook and Twitter. Among Twitter users, VS had fewer followers on average (median 178, inter-quartile range [IQR] 39-555) than IR (median 272, IQR 50-793, p=0.26) and IC (median 286, IQR 71-1257, p=0.052). IC were most likely to be influencers (30.9%, n=25) followed by IR (17.9%, n=15) and VS (10.7%, n=8, p=0.006). On average, interventional cardiologists had the highest follow ratio (mean 4.9 ± 7.1) compared to interventional radiologists (mean 3.2 ± 5.5) and vascular surgeons (mean 2.5 ± 3.3, p

Transforming Leadership Pathways for Humanities Professionals in Higher Education includes thirteen essays from a variety of contributors investigating how humanities professionals grapple with the opportunities and challenges of leadership positions. Written by insiders sharing their lived experience, this collection provides an authentic look at the multiple roles humanities specialists play, as well as offers strategies for professional growth, sustenance, and satisfaction. The collection also considers the relationship between disciplinary areas of study, academic training, and the valuable skill sets and habits of mind that serve higher education leaders. While Transforming Leadership Pathways emphasizes that a leadership route in higher education can be a welcome and positive professional move for many humanities scholars, the volume also acknowledges the issues that arise when faculty take on administrative positions while otherwise marginalized on campus because of faculty status, rank, or personal identity. This collection demystifies the path into higher education administration and argues that humanities scholars are uniquely qualified for such roles. Empathetic, deeply analytical, attuned to historical context, and trained in communication, teachers and scholars who hail from humanities disciplines often find themselves well-suited to the demands of complex academic leadership in today’s colleges and universities., https://docs.lib.purdue.edu/navigatingcareershighered/1001/thumbnail.jpg

Football training in the formative stages must address the acquisition of the specific skills inherent to the sport. It must also stimulate the physical, mental and emotional development of those practicing it. In this sense, the youth football coaches must possess a range of pedagogical and methodological skills to stimulate the comprehensive growth of children. From our research approach, we consider that the academic training of the coach can condition the way of approaching the training process and, more specifically, one of the most relevant pedagogical tools: the type and frequency of verbal behaviours used during the development of their work. There is little previous evidence that has addressed how the academic training of the coaches can modulate the use of verbal dialogue during training. This investigation aims to analyse and compare the verbal behaviour of youth football coaches (with different academic backgrounds) while instructing training sessions. To do this, we chose seventy coaches who worked in u10 and u12 teams in the Valencian Community. Their first team was not in a professional league (1st and 2nd division). There were two groups of thirty-five. One group had no university training related to Physical and Sports Education (PSE), and the other group had the education mentioned above. The coach's verbal behaviour was analysed according to the type of task (technical, tactical-strategic, physical-conditional, game without rules, and other types of activities) and its nature being either analytical or global. Our results show that coaches without university training in PSE used more instructional verbal behavior than their peers. A more directive training style focused on the figure of the coach and with little variety in teaching-learning strategies. On the other hand, football coaches with university training in PSE used a more significant proportion and a variety of verbal behaviors. Such as positive and negative general feedback, explanation-information, corrective feedback, convergent question, humor, and scolding, compared to their peers who did not have this academic training. It suggests a more athlete-focused teaching style that encourages participation and a greater variety of teaching resources. Our results allow us to conclude that university education in PSE provides a set of skills in methodology and psychopedagogy, vital in sports teaching and the comprehensive education of children and young people, manifested in the verbal coaches behaviours. Paying attention to this finding may be critical to improving sports training at an early age.

Purpose: To report the rate of flap-related complications in LASIK surgery performed by in-training ophthalmology residents and to analyze the risk factors for these complications. Methods: We analyzed 273 flap dissections in 145 patients from March 2013 to February 2014. We included all LASIK surgeries performed by 32 ophthalmology residents using a Moria M2 microkeratome. All the flap-related complications were noted. Comparison between both groups with and without complications was performed with an independent Student's t-test and relative risks were calculated. Results: There were 19 flap-related complications out of the 273 flap dissections (6.95%). The most common complication was incomplete flap dissection (n = 10; 3.66%), followed by free-cap (n = 5; 1.83%), and flap-buttonhole (n = 2; 0.73%). There was no significant difference between the complicated and uncomplicated cases in terms of the right versus the left eye, pachymetry results, white-to-white diameter, and spherical equivalent. But this difference was significant for mean keratometry (P = 0.008), K-min (P = 0.01), and K-max (P = 0.03) between these groups. Final visual acuity after rescheduling laser treatment was similar in both groups. Relative risks for flap-related complications were 2.03 for the first LASIK surgery (CI 95% 0.64 to 6.48; P = 0.22) and 1.26 (CI 95% 0.43 to 3.69; P = 0.66) for the surgeon's flap-related complications. Female gender presented an odds ratio of 2.48 (CI 95% 0.68 to 9.00; P = 0.16) for complications. Conclusion: Flap-related complications are common intraoperative event during LASIK surgery performed by in-training ophthalmologists. Keratometries and surgeon's first procedure represent a higher probability for flap related complications than some other biometric parameters of patient's eye.

There is increasing concern regarding the attrition of surgeon-scientists in cardiothoracic (CT) surgery. However, the characteristics of CT surgeons who are actively leading basic science research (BSR) have not been examined. We hypothesized that early exposure to BSR during training and active grant funding are important factors that facilitate the pursuit of BSR among practicing CT surgeons. We created a database of 992 CT surgeons listed as faculty at accredited United States CT surgery teaching hospitals in 2018. Data regarding each surgeon's training/professional history, publication record, and National Institutes of Health funding were acquired from publicly available online sources. Surgeons who published at least one first- or last-author paper in 2017-2018 were considered to be active, lead researchers.Of the 992 CT surgeons, 73 (7.4%) were actively leading BSR, and 599 (60.4%) were actively leading only non-BSR. Only 2 women were actively leading BSR. Surgeons actively leading BSR were more likely to have earned a PhD degree (20.5% versus 9.7%, P = 0.0049), and more likely to have published a first-author BSR paper during training (76.7% versus 40.9%, P0.0001). Surgeons actively leading BSR were also more likely to have an active National Institutes of Health grant (34.2% versus 5.8%, P0.0001), especially an R01 grant (21.9% versus 2.5%, P0.0001).A small minority of CT surgeons at academic training hospitals are actively leading BSR. In order to facilitate the development of surgeon-scientists, additional support must be given to trainees and junior faculty, especially women, to enable early engagement in BSR.

The skills for thematic, or intentional, integration of independent pieces of research, a highly difficult but important task in academic training, is analyzed (Study 1) and supported by collaborative reflection (Studies 2 and 3). The results indicate that simple scaffolds combined and embedded in a collaboratively reflective curriculum can support this highly complex task.

The objective of this research is to analyze pre-service teachers’ perceptions of their knowledge of educational concepts from the pre-Hispanic and colonial worlds. Based on a cross-sectional descriptive methodological approach, statistical analyses of central tendency and bi-variate analyses were utilized (Pearson’s correlation and ANOVA), through the use of an ad hoc questionnaire completed by 220 students at the School of Education at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The instruments’ internal consistency (α = .892) ratified their accuracy as analytical tools. The results show the university students’ low self-perceptions in recognizing and defining the concepts at hand and confirm their need to learn those concepts in order to gain confidence in their work and strengthen the configuration of their identity.

As a result of this requirement arises the STEM/STEAM educational movement, which is currently promoted even by educational administrations, such as the Junta de Andalucía, through its STEAM projects. In this study, an educational ethnography of the Nuestra Señora del Rosario school in Granada is carried out on the impact of these projects on the attitudes, vocations and performance of the E.S.O. students, the perception of STEM and teacher training, and the impact of STEAM projects on the operation of the school. The results show that a large part of the participating students are interested in STEAM disciplines and that teachers intend to integrate these projects in their classrooms on an ongoing basis., Proyecto “Proyectos de Educación STEAM y aprendizaje escolar”, PID2021-128261NB-I00 financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/FEDER, Una manera de hacer Europa
