The current research aimed to conduct bioassay-guided isolation of bioactive compounds from the stem bark of Lannea coromandelica. Using column chromatography and NMR spectroscopy, two compounds -ursolic acid and palmitoleic acid-were isolated from the plant's stem bark. The methanolic stem bark extract possessed higher total phenolic, flavonoid, and antioxidant capacity content than the n-hexane extract. The IC50 value of the methanol and n-hexane stem bark extracts for DPPH free radical scavenging potential was found to be 37.37 and 27.726 µg/mL, respectively, while for nitric oxide, the IC50 value was 14.615 and 22.136 µg/mL, respectively. The n-hexane extract exhibited higher antidiabetic effectiveness (46% blood glucose reduction) than the methanolic extract (37.8% blood glucose reduction) after 3 hours of glucose administration in mice model at a dose of 400 mg/kg body weight (p < 0.001). The methanolic extract demonstrated the highest anti-diarrheal action at a dose of 400 mg/kg body weight (88.70% inhibition of defecation, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the n-hexane extract showed the highest analgesic activity (70.5% inhibition of writhing, p < 0.01). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) plays an important role in the development of various human cancers. We investigated the relationship between Cav-1 expression and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) progression in the context of brain metastasis (BM). Methods Cav-1 expression was investigated in a series of 102 BM samples and 49 paired primary NSCLC samples, as well as 162 unpaired primary NSCLC samples with (63 cases) or without (99 cases) metastasis to distant organs. Human lung cancer cell lines were used for in vitro functional analysis. Results High Cav-1 expression in tumor cells was observed in 52% (38/73) of squamous cell carcinomas (SQCs) and 33% (45/138) of non-SQCs. In SQC, high Cav-1 expression was increased after BM in both paired and unpaired samples of lung primary tumors and BM (53% vs. 84% in paired samples, P = 0.034; 52% vs. 78% in unpaired samples, P = 0.020). Although the difference in median overall survival in patients NSCLC was not statistically significant, high Cav-1 expression in tumor cells (P = 0.005, hazard ratio 1.715, 95% confidence index 1.175–2.502) was independent prognostic factors of overall survival on multivariate Cox regression analyses, in addition to the presence of BM and non-SQC type. In vitro assays revealed that Cav-1 knockdown inhibited the invasion and migration of lung cancer cells. Genetic modulation of Cav-1 was consistently associated with SNAIL up- and down-regulation. These findings were supported by increased SNAIL and Cav-1 expression in BM samples of SQC. Conclusions Cav-1 plays an important role in the BM of NSCLC, especially in SQC. The mechanism may be linked to SNAIL regulation.

Atmospheric water generator (AWG) technologies are considered a potential new source of freshwater. Thermoelectric (TEC) dehumidifiers are one of this technology where it uses the Peltier effect to create a heat flux at the junction of two different materials. This device is well known for its thermoelectric cooling application, from as small as portable beverage coolers to as big as submarines. The problems of using this device are ice buildup and relatively low efficiency. If the surface of the material can be engineered in a way that the dropwise condensation, as well as precipitation from the cooling plate, is enhanced, it is possible to maximize the efficiency of TEC-driven AWG with minimum energy consumption. This study investigates the effects of macroscopic (bump/dent, patterns that are visible to the human eye) and microscopic patterns (surface finish, quality, grain distribution, etc. visible under a microscope) on industry-grade stainless (SS) surfaces on dropwise condensation and precipitation. The surface contact angle is considered here to understand the hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties of the surfaces before and after applying hydrophobic coating under constant ambient conditions. Better droplet nucleation and quicker precipitation have been observed on the surfaces after treating a hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface with hydrophobic spray. It can be inferred that even though the initial surface property of the two samples were different, it was possible to achieve similar level of super hydrophobicity after applying the spray. This proves that surfaces can be modified with appropriate treatment to achieve desired properties.

Olanzapine (OLNZ) is used to treat psychotic disorders. To look into the neurological basis of this phenomenon, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of OLNZ in gerbils and SH-SY5Y cells. Gerbils were subjected to transient global cerebral ischemia (TGCI) by blocking both common carotid arteries, and OLNZ (10 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was used to induce oxidative-stress-mediated damage in the SH-SY5Y cells. The results indicated that OLNZ administration markedly reduced neuron damage and glial cell triggering within CA1 zone of the hippocampus. We used RNA sequencing to assess the numbers of up-and downregulated genes involved in TGCI. We found that OLNZ treatment downregulated the expression of complement-component-related genes and the expression of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) in the hippocampus. In cells, OLNZ co-treatment significantly improved cell viability and reduced lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Expression of antioxidant superoxide dismutase-1,2 enzymes (SOD-1, SOD-2) was also intensely upregulated by OLNZ, while the expression of MAPKs and NF-κB were reduced. Co-incubation with OLNZ also regulated apoptosis-related proteins Bax/Bcl-2 expression. Finally, the results demonstrated that treatment with OLNZ showed neuroprotective effects and that the MAPK pathway could involve in the protective effects.

Currently, research on the bambangan-fruit seed has become interesting because of its potential application as a cocoa butter alternative. This work aimed to determine the changes in the quality of the extracted bambangan-seed fat (BSF) obtained using hexane, petroleum ether, and ethanol. The extraction solvents affected the total fat content (TFC), physicochemical properties, fatty-acid profile, triacylglycerol composition, and crystalline structure of the extracted BSF. The results showed that BSF has a high content of 1,3-distreoyl-2-oleoyl-glycerol (SOS). The solvent-type significantly (p < 0.05) impacts the stearic and oleic acids of the extracts, resulting in apparent changes in the high-melting symmetrical triacylglycerols, such as SOS. Petroleum-ether-extracted BSF has a high stearic acid of 33.40%, followed by that of hexane- and ethanol-extracted BSF at 29.29% and 27.84%, respectively. Moreover, the spherulitic microstructure with needle-like crystals of the extracts also ranges from 30 to 70 µm in diameter. Hexane-extracted BSF illustrated a less-dense, spherulitic, crystalline microstructure with a less-granular centre than those extracted using the other solvents. The results suggested that the quality of the extracted BSF obtained from the nonpolar solvents of hexane and petroleum ether are better than that extracted using ethanol.

The increase in health and safety concerns regarding chemical modification in recent years has caused a growing research interest in the modification of starch by physical techniques. There has been a growing trend toward using a combination of treatments in starch modification in producing desirable functional properties to widen the application of a specific starch. In this study, a novel combination of gamma irradiation and annealing (ANN) was used to modify sago starch (Metroxylon sagu). The starch was subjected to gamma irradiation (5, 10, 25, 50 kGy) prior to ANN at 5 °C (To-5) and 10 °C (To-10) below the gelatinization temperature. Determination of amylose content, pH, carboxyl content, FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) intensity ratio (R1047/1022), swelling power and solubility, thermal behavior, pasting properties, and morphology were carried out. Annealing irradiated starch at To-5 promoted more crystalline perfection as compared to To-10, particularly when combined with 25 and 50 kGy, whereby a synergistic effect was observed. Dual-modified sago starch exhibited lower swelling power, improved gel firmness, and thermal stability with an intact granular structure. Results suggested the potential of gamma irradiation and annealing to induce some novel characteristics in sago starch for extended applications.

The application of chemical pesticides to protect agricultural crops from pests and diseases is discouraged due to their harmful effects on humans and the environment. Therefore, alternative approaches for crop protection through microbial or microbe-originated pesticides have been gaining momentum. Wheat blast is a destructive fungal disease caused by the Magnaporthe oryzae Triticum (MoT) pathotype, which poses a serious threat to global food security. Screening of secondary metabolites against MoT revealed that antimycin A isolated from a marine Streptomyces sp. had a significant inhibitory effect on mycelial growth in vitro. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects of antimycin A on some critical life stages of MoT and evaluate the efficacy of wheat blast disease control using this natural product. A bioassay indicated that antimycin A suppressed mycelial growth (62.90%), conidiogenesis (100%), germination of conidia (42%), and the formation of appressoria in the germinated conidia (100%) of MoT at a 10 µg/mL concentration. Antimycin A suppressed MoT in a dose-dependent manner with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.005 μg/disk. If germinated, antimycin A induced abnormal germ tubes (4.8%) and suppressed the formation of appressoria. Interestingly, the application of antimycin A significantly suppressed wheat blast disease in both the seedling (100%) and heading stages (76.33%) of wheat at a 10 µg/mL concentration, supporting the results from in vitro study. This is the first report on the inhibition of mycelial growth, conidiogenesis, conidia germination, and detrimental morphological alterations in germinated conidia, and the suppression of wheat blast disease caused by a Triticum pathotype of M. Oryzae by antimycin A. Further study is required to unravel the precise mode of action of this promising natural compound for considering it as a biopesticide to combat wheat blast.

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is an established independent predictor of adverse prognosis in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) even with improvements in diabetes treatment and interventional techniques. The aim of this study was to compare long term post PCI outcome between diabetic and non-diabetic patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD). Method: The data was derived from a prospective observational study to evaluate the outcome after PCI in DM patients for 2 years. A total of 305 patients with IHD & DM were randomly selected and enrolled who underwent PCI from 2010 to 2013 in an urban cardiac hospital of Bangladesh. The study population were divided into two groups with group 1 consisting of patients with DM (n=108) and group 2 of patients without DM (n=197). After the PCI, all patients were followed up for 2 years. The incidences of bleeding, stent thrombosis, myocardial infarction (MI), stroke and repeat revascularization were compared. Results: Diabetic patients had significant adverse outcomes having MI, stroke & MACCE respectively following 1 year (p= 0.018, 0.036 & 0.017) and MI following 2 years (p= 0.013) compared to non-diabetic patients. However, in multivariate analysis, diabetes mellitus was not found to be an independent predictor for 1-year & 2-year adverse events following PCI [OR 1.016 (0.317-3.259) & p 0.979, after 1 year and 1.554 (0.087 – 27.902) & p 0.765, after 2 years]. Conclusions: The outcome of PCI after 1 year and 2 years among diabetic and non-diabetic subjects with IHD differed significantly in respect of MI, stroke & MACCE. But this study failed to identify diabetes mellitus as an independent risk factor for 1-year and 2-year adverse outcomes. Cardiovasc j 2022; 15(1): 5-12

Magnetic topological semimetals offer higher mobility due to massless fermion, promising applications in spintronics, anomalous Hall effect at significantly higher temperature, and applications in topological Weyl superconductivity. However, the number of known magnetic topological semimetals is quite limited to explore different applications experimentally. In this paper, a total of 257 magnetic topological semimetals are identified from two materials databases. Using the information about topological semimetals and their magnetic properties, magnetic topological semimetals are identified considering the spin polarization of the unit cell at the Fermi level, magnetization per atom, and magnetization per cell. Besides classifying, a machine learning model is also used by utilizing a large number of material properties to identify some more magnetic topological semimetals. A large number of magnetic topological semimetals will help experimentalists to explore different interesting phenomena of this emerging frontier at room temperature.

Summary: Background: Lymphatic filariasis is a neglected tropical disease that can cause permanent disability through disruption of the lymphatic system. This disease is caused by parasitic filarial worms that are transmitted by mosquitos. Mass drug administration (MDA) of antihelmintics is recommended by WHO to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem. This study aims to produce the first geospatial estimates of the global prevalence of lymphatic filariasis infection over time, to quantify progress towards elimination, and to identify geographical variation in distribution of infection. Methods: A global dataset of georeferenced surveyed locations was used to model annual 2000–18 lymphatic filariasis prevalence for 73 current or previously endemic countries. We applied Bayesian model-based geostatistics and time series methods to generate spatially continuous estimates of global all-age 2000–18 prevalence of lymphatic filariasis infection mapped at a resolution of 5 km2 and aggregated to estimate total number of individuals infected. Findings: We used 14 927 datapoints to fit the geospatial models. An estimated 199 million total individuals (95% uncertainty interval 174–234 million) worldwide were infected with lymphatic filariasis in 2000, with totals for WHO regions ranging from 3·1 million (1·6–5·7 million) in the region of the Americas to 107 million (91–134 million) in the South-East Asia region. By 2018, an estimated 51 million individuals (43–63 million) were infected. Broad declines in prevalence are observed globally, but focal areas in Africa and southeast Asia remain less likely to have attained infection prevalence thresholds proposed to achieve local elimination. Interpretation: Although the prevalence of lymphatic filariasis infection has declined since 2000, MDA is still necessary across large populations in Africa and Asia. Our mapped estimates can be used to identify areas where the probability of meeting infection thresholds is low, and when coupled with large uncertainty in the predictions, indicate additional data collection or intervention might be warranted before MDA programmes cease. The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is a highly transmittable and pathogenic viral infection caused by a novel evolutionarily divergent RNA virus, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus first emerged in Wuhan, China in December 2019, and subsequently spreaded around the world. Genomic analyses revealed that this zoonotic virus may be evolved naturally but not a purposefully manipulated laboratory construct. However, currently available data are not sufficient to precisely conclude the origin of this fearsome virus. Comprehensive annotations of the whole-genomes revealed hundreds of nucleotides, and amino acids mutations, substitutions and/or deletions at different positions of the ever changing SARS-CoV-2 genome. The spike (S) glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 possesses a functional polybasic (furin) cleavage site at the S1-S2 boundary through the insertion of 12 nucleotides. It leads to the predicted acquisition of 3-O-linked glycan around the cleavage site. Although real-time RT-PCR methods targeting specific gene(s) have widely been used to diagnose the COVID-19 patients, however, recently developed more convenient, cheap, rapid, and specific diagnostic tools targeting antigens or CRISPR-Cas-mediated method or a newly developed plug and play method should be available for the resource-poor developing countries. A large number of candidate drugs, vaccines and therapies have shown great promise in early trials, however, these candidates of preventive or therapeutic agents have to pass a long path of trials before being released for the practical application against COVID-19. This review updates current knowledge on origin, genomic evolution, development of the diagnostic tools, and the preventive or therapeutic remedies of the COVID-19. We also discussed the future scopes for research, effective management, and surveillance of the newly emerged COVID-19 disease.

Abstract Changes in human water use, along with temperature and rainfall patterns, are facilitating habitat spread and distribution of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, the primary vectors for the transmission of Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika viruses in the Americas. Artificial containers and wet spots provide major sources of mosquito larval habitat in residential areas. Mosquito abatement and control strategies remain the most effective public health interventions for minimizing the impact of these vector‐borne diseases. Understanding how water insecurity is conducive to the establishment and elimination of endemic mosquito populations, particularly in arid or semiarid regions, is a vital component in shaping these intervention strategies.

Stems and pods of hyacinth bean cultivated in a farmer’s field in Gazipur District, Bangladesh, were found rotted in nearly 5% hyacinth bean plants. A fungus having fluffy mycelium and large sclerotia was isolated from affected tissues. Combined results of morphological, molecular and pathological analyses identified the fungus as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib) de Bary. Inoculating the fungus on healthy hyacinth bean plants and pods reproduced the symptoms previously observed in the field. The three isolates obtained from naturally infected plants were cross inoculated in hyacinth bean, okra and African-American marigold and they were pathogenic to these hosts. The optimum temperature and pH for its growth were 20°C and pH 5.0, respectively. Sclerotial development was favored at pH 5.0. Sucrose and mannitol were the best carbon sources to support hyphal growth, while glucose was the most favourable for sclerotial development. The hyacinth bean genotypes, HB-82 (Rupban Sheem) and HB-102 were found highly resistant, while HB-94 (Ashina) was moderate resistant to the fungus. Finally, S. sclerotiorum was sensitive to Bavistin, Dithane M-45 and Rovral fungicides and Ca in the form of CaCl2. This observation could possibly aid in eliminating field loss in hyacinth bean caused by an emerging pathogenic fungus S. sclerotiorum.

Magnetic skyrmions offer various advantages compared to domain wall based memory applications. A skyrmion based shift register is analyzed that uses either ferromagnetic or synthetic anti-ferromagnetic skyrmions. The energy requirement to shift a ferromagnetic (FM) skyrmion is less than that required to create or annihilate a skyrmion in conventional race track memory. Two different types of skyrmion shift register structures are investigated. They differ in the geometry used to confine a skyrmion into an individual cell. One structure uses a rectangular channel combined with a modification of the gate metal above the channel to define individual cells. In the the second structure, the channel width is modified into an hourglass type shape, and the narrow regions of the channel serve to confine the skyrmion to an individual cell. The effects of the shape of the structures, the thickness of the top heavy metal layer, the gap between the gate regions, and the presence of disorder and finite temperature are analysed using micromagnetic simulations. Synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAFM) skyrmions provide higher velocity and reduced switching energy compared to ferromagnetic skyrmions, and they can be stable above room temperature. All of the necessary phase diagrams for obtaining stable skyrmions are presented, which can help to select the correct ferromagnetic material and heavy metalcombinations to obtain skyrmions with desired diameters.To stabilize skyrmions, the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) plays a vital role. The interface between a ferromagnet (FM) or antiferromagnet (AFM) and a heavy metal (HM) results in an antisymmetric exchange interaction known as the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) which favors non-collinear spin configurations. The iDMI is responsible for stabilizing noncollinear spin textures such as skyrmions in materials with bulk inversion symmetry. Interfacial DMI values have been previously determined theoretically and experimentally for FM/HM interfaces,and, in this work, they are calculated for the metallic AFM MnPt and the insulating AFM NiO. The heavy metals considered are W, Re, and Au. Values for the iDMI, exchange, and anisotropy constants are determinedfor different AFM and HM thicknesses. The iDMI values of the MnPt heterolayers are comparable to those of the common FM materials, and those of NiO are lower. In few-layer films of (001) MnPt, the high spin orbit coupling of the Pt layers can give rise to a small DMI in the absence of a HM layer.Magnetic properties have also been determined for a new family of two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials. The recent demonstration of MoSi2N4 and its exceptional stability to air, water, acid, and heat has generated intense interest in this family of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Among these materials, monolayers of NbSi2N4, VSi2N4, and VSi2P4 are semiconducting, easy-plane ferromagnets with negligible in-plane magnetic anisotropy. They thus satisfy a necessary condition for exhibiting a dissipationless spin superfluid mode. The Curie temperatures of monolayer VSi2P4 and VSi2N4 are determined to be above room temperature based on Monte Carlo and density functional theory calculations. The magnetic moments of VSi2N4 can be switched from in-plane to out-of-plane by applying tensile biaxial strain or electron doping.Besides magnetic materials, topological materials also offer various prospective applications. There have been also a tremendous interests in finding 1D and 2D materials. To facilitate identifying materials of interest, 27 one dimensional and 300 two dimensional topological materials are identified using several databases. 1D and 2D topological insulators and semimetals are identified. 1D and 2D topological materials which have been experimentally demonstrated, are also identified.

•This article introduces the preparation of novel green adsorbent from Tabernaemontana divaricataleaves for the first time.•Here the authors optimized the MG dye removal capacity by varying parameters such as pH, initial dye concentration, contact time, and TD dosage.•The authors revealed the dye removal process more accurately by analyzing the kinetics it followed.•The results demonstrated that TD exhibited a high adsorption capacity for MG dye, achieving a maximum removal efficiency of 89.5 % under optimized conditions: pH 7.0, initial dye concentration of 20 ppm, contact time of 120 min, TD dosage of 0.4 g/L, and temperature of 30 °C.•Moreover, the released water after dye removal exhibit very less phytotoxicity which was evaluated through germination test.

Background: Myopia, or nearsightedness, affects a large percentage of the population and is typically identified in those under the age of 20. Having myopia makes it difficult to see far away. While you have no issue seeing nearby items, such as those used to indicate aisles in a grocery store, you may have trouble seeing further away ones, such as road signs. Objective: In this study our main goal is to evaluate the distribution of iris colour and its relationship to myopiain Bangladeshi patients. Method: This cross-sectional study was carried out at tertiary hospital from March 2020 to December 2021, researchers from several fields and sessions worked together on a single unified study. There were a total of 100 people, with a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 6/6, and ages ranging from 11 to 25 years old. Patients were limited to no more than six hours of television every day. All three degrees of myopia (mild, moderate, and severe) were covered. Results: During the study, 51% belong to 10-15 years followed by 35% belong to 16-20 years and 14% belong to 21-25 years. In addition, among patients mild 55%, moderate 21%, and severe 24% myopia. Screen time, significantly associated with myopia. 40% who had screen time was 1-2 hours had severe level myopia. Followed by 45% who had screen time was 2-4 hours had severe level myopia and 50% who had screen time was 4-6 hours had severe level myopia. 66% who had mid-level myopia had grade I Irish color. Followed by 56% who had moderate level myopia had grade I Irish color and 50% severe level myopia had grade I Irish color. 66% who had simple myopia had grade I Irish color. Followed by 55% who had curvatural myopia had grade I Irish color. Conclusion: Darker iris color was linked to higher myopia-related refractive errors, even when other known myopia-related risk variables were taken into account.
