153. Interrelation of indicators of management-plant health-conservation of forage resources in Cuban silvopastoral systems.

Abstract

In order to know how some management indicators of silvopastoral systems and their plant health contribute to the duration of the main forage species that form their associations, eight silvopastoral systems were sampled (six in Matanzas province and two in Mayabeque province). The botanical composition of grasslands was measured, as well as the amount of weeds, the associated entomofauna and its functional composition. Results indicated that, having a proper management in paddocks of silvopastoral systems, in paddocks 1, 2, 4, 6 and that of double purpose (bull fattening-seed production), there was an increase of the percentage of meadow species in the botanical composition and the density of leucaena trees per hectare was maintained. A similar performance was obtained with the presence of phytophagous and beneficial insects, mainly in these last, which prevented massive outbreaks of pests during the evaluated period. In the paddocks with SSP-4, 5, 6 and 7, where the percentage of natural grasses increased, there was also an increase of the number of weeds, which is an indicator of bad management in animal husbandry, although in some cases they can be used as shelter and/or food (pollen or nectar) for predators and parasitoids, as it happened in the SSP-4 and 6. It can be concluded that management indicators (necessary rest time of the grass, animal stay and proning labors), as well as the conservation of natural enemies in the favorable environment created for them, allowed to maintain the biological balance (without massive outbreaks of pests) in the areas during the evaluated period. They also contributed to the persistence in time of the permanent forage plant resources that compose these systems (in their majority), and to their economic and environmental sustainability. 156. Photometric and morphological analysis of UCM galaxies .2. Statistical results and interpretation

Abstract

We present the results of Thuan & Gunn r CCD imaging observations of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) sample of emission-line galaxies (ELGs) selected by the presence of H_α emission in low resolution objective-prism spectra. In this work, a total of 212 objects from the UCM survey have been photometrically and morphologically characterized. In a previous paper, the observations, basic reductions and morphological classification for the UCM objects were presented. Here, we analyse the statistical properties of the sample and their interpretations. The main results obtained are as follows: (1) Our survey is specially effective in the detection of ELGs smaller and less luminous than normal spirals (the median values of the UCM sample are M_r = -20.6 and D_24 = 19.4 kpc, for H_0 = 50 km s^-1 Mpc^-1). (2) The sample presents a very heterogeneous morphological population of galaxies. There is a clear predominance of late-type galaxies, with 66% being Sb or later. (3) We have found a set of galaxies specially interesting. In particular, we propose 9 candidates to BCD (blue compact dwarf galaxy), five of them previously unknown. (4) About 10% of the ELGs of the sample show typical parameters of S0 types, and in the subsample of 16 UCM interacting galaxies, 25% are S0 type galaxies. (5) In the set of UCM galaxies inside the Coma cluster, 71% exhibit Hubble types Sb or later.

Abstract

A full set of algorithms for the automatic analysis of low-resolution objective-prism spectra has been developed with the aim of finding new emission-line galaxies (ELGs) candidates from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) survey prism plates. An objective-prism plate and a direct plate, used for pairing objects and to perform star-galaxy separation, have been scanned with the MAMA machine. The plates were taken in the red region of the spectrum, using the Hα+[NII] blend in emission as selection criterion. The procedure, applied to digitized spectra, is able to automatically select ELGs candidates. Density to intensity transformation has not been used in our method; the detection of the emission is performed applying three independent criteria over the one-dimensional spectra in raw data. The automatically selected sample is compared with that obtained after a careful visual scan. Spectroscopic observations at moderate spectral resolution are presented for the whole sample of candidates in order to study the drawbacks and the biases of both methods.

186. Asistencia psiquiátrica en pacientes mayores de 65 años en una unidad de agudos de un hospital general

Abstract

Objetivos: Tratando de cubrir la escasez de publicaciones que sobre este tema existen en las unidades de Hospitalización Psiquiátrica de Agudos de nuestro entorno, hacemos un análisis descriptivo de la patología psiquiátrica en pacientes mayores de 65 años en función de variables epidemiológicas, clínico-terapéuticas y de gestión clínica. Material y métodos: 109 pacientes ancianos ingresados en la Unidad de Hospitalización Psiquiátrica de agudos (centro de referencia del área sanitaria de A Coruña) entre los años 1996 y 1999. Se utilizó un protocolo estructurado de 38 ítems. Análisis de datos con el programa SPSS. Resultados: La edad media de los pacientes se sitúa en torno a los 72 años, con un predominio del sexo femenino en una proporción de 3 a 2 sobre los varones. Viven con sus familiares el 64%. Hay un predominio de los Trastornos del Estado de Animo (53.2%), con una baja prevalencia de Trastorno Mental Orgánico (2.8%). Encontramos que en el 52.3% de la muestra existen enfermedades médicas, fundamentalmente las del aparato cardiovascular, neurológicas y endocrino-metabólicas. En el 69.7% se detecta una carencia en las estructuras de apoyo social del anciano, y esta se asocia significativamente con la presencia de patología somática. La estancia media se sitúa en 17.89 días, encontrándose al alta una respuesta terapéutica favorable en un 94.5% de los pacientes. Son derivados a su Unidad de Salud Mental el 77.1%. Sólo el 2.8% de los pacientes fueron remitidos por su médico de familia y, al alta, únicamente el 0,9% se derivaron a este. Conclusiones: El papel jugado por la Atención Primaria en el abordaje de trastornos psiquiátricos debería ser mayor del que encontramos en nuestro estudio. La accesibilidad al médico de familia y la relación previa con el paciente facilitarían la detección y abordaje terapéutico. Sería importante incrementar la capacitación e implicación de los profesionales de Medicina de Familia en el manejo de estos procesos, así como implicarlo
