Abstract

The influence of in-phase and quadrature (IQ) imbalance on the performance of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) transmission is investigated in this work. OTFS is a recent two-dimensional transmission scheme with promising robustness against the time and frequency selectivity of the time-varying wireless channel, and IQ impairment arises from inevitable imperfections between in-phase and quadrature branches in the transceiver design. In this paper, the mathematical model is presented to illustrate the physical effect of the IQ mismatched transmitter in OTFS, which results in a new type of interference named mirror-Doppler interference (MDI), occurring only along the Doppler axis. Moreover, a closed-form expression for the average bit error rate (BER) of OTFS with IQ imbalanced transmitter is derived taking into account M-ary symbol with a constant envelope and maximum likelihood (ML) detection principle. Importantly, our findings prove that IQ imbalanced transmitter causes a significant reduction in the diversity gain of OTFS transmission, but does not lead to an error floor in the BER performance as in one-dimensional current communication systems. Monte-Carlo simulations are provided to validate the derived mathematical formulas for OTFS transmission with constant envelope M-ary symbols under different system configurations. Abstract

In 5G and beyond communication systems, distinct numerologies can coexist to serve diverse requirements for users and applications. However, the inter‐numerology interference (INI) is a main challenge that significantly impacts the system performance. Therefore, the performance under INI has become an essential evaluation metric for the suitability of the different transmission schemes in the future communication systems. This paper analyzes the impact of INI on the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM‐IM) systems. Specifically, an analytical expression of the INI level in OFDM‐IM systems is presented as a function of the subcarrier activation ratio (SAR) and subcarrier activation probability (SAP). Furthermore, aiming at reducing the INI level, an adaptive subcarrier mapping scheme (SMS) is proposed based on the conventional combinatorial mapping scheme. Moreover, analysis and evaluation of SAR and SAP are performed regarding the requirements of 5G and beyond services. Abstract

Abstract Establishing stable routes over high mobility networks is a challenging field and consequently brought the attention of a lot of current researchers. In this article, a new reactive routing protocol has been proposed which is considered as a major extension of both Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) and Mobility and Direction Aware AODV (MDA-AODV) prior routing protocols. It is named as Mobility Aware and Dual Phase Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector with Adaptive Hello Messages (MA-DP-AODV-AHM). It primarily concentrates on building routes considering vehicles’ speeds and direction of motion with respect to source vehicles, thereby establishing more stable routes and reducing the route breakages. Not only to this extent, but rather, we proposed an adaptive control packet announcement mechanism, which is directly connected to the periodic hello messages approach, with vehicles’ speeds, yielding a significant reduction in the amount of control overhead and congestion over the network. Moreover, the new protocol is proposed to alternate working among two phases, for the reason of guaranteeing the generation of efficient routes on a timely basis, which include MA-DP-AODV-AHM and AODV protocols. Our protocol has been evaluated in terms of control overhead, end-to-end delay, and energy consumption using QualNet simulator version 7.1 in which enormous simulations have been conducted under the base of vehicle density, packet rate, and constant bit rate connections. Simulation results summarize that MA-DP-AODV-AHM contributes efficiently in mitigating the network instability through generating effective stable routes and reducing link failures. Abstract

In the next generations of communication systems, resources' scarcity devolves to a more critical point as a consequence of the expected massive number of users to be served. Furthermore, the users' contradicting requirements on quality of service forces the network to behave in a dynamic way in terms of the multiple access orchestration and resource assignment between users. Hence, the linear relation between the number of served users and the required (orthogonal or semi-orthogonal) resources is no longer sufficient as in the orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes and index modulation (IM) techniques emerge as candidates to satisfy the ever-increasing spectral efficiency and connectivity demands. In this thesis, a comprehensive literature review is conducted on the IM-based multiple access techniques, and a novel IM-based NOMA downlink scheme, termed as IM-NOMA, is proposed, where the Base Station (BS) selects a channel or more to serve each user based on the IM concept and the corresponding power level is allocated based on the NOMA concept. At the users' ends, two detection techniques, namely maximum likelihood (ML) and successive interference cancellation (SIC), are considered and their error rate, outage probability and computational complexity are analyzed. Furthermore, a low computationally complex detection technique is designed for the proposed IM-NOMA scheme. Multiple numerical simulations are conducted to verify the efficiency of the proposed scheme and to validate the analytical findings. Simulation results show the accuracy of the analytical formulas and that the proposed IM-NOMA can outperform the conventional NOMA scheme and the related state-of-the art schemes in terms of error performance

Abstract

The growth of the mobile, portable devices and the server-to-server communication through cloud computing increase the network traffic. The dependence of the ubiquitous healthcare service delivery on the network connectivity creates failures that may interrupt or delay the treatment plan with adverse effects in patients’ quality of life even leading to mortality. In the present work, we propose the incorporation of Software Defined Networking (SDN) features in the healthcare domain in order to provide the appropriate bandwidth and guarantee the accurate real time medical data transmission independently of the connectivity of the ISP provider. The SDN controller monitors the network traffic and specifies how traffic should be routed providing load balancing, lower delays and better performance. Finally, the proposed healthcare architecture addresses the SDN scalability challenge by incorporating the logically centralized control plane using multiple distributed controllers. A 2-tier hierarchical overlay is formed among SDN controllers following the principles of peer-to-peer networking.

The heavy reliance of Industry 4.0 on emerging communication technologies, notably Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) and Machine-Type Communications (MTC), and the increasing exposure of these traditionally isolated infrastructures to the Internet, are tremendously increasing the attack surface. Network segregation is a viable solution to address this problem. It essentially splits the network into several logical groups (subnetworks) and enforces adequate security policy on each segment, e.g., restricting unnecessary intergroup communications or controlling the access. However, existing segregation techniques primarily depend on manual configurations, which renders them inefficient for cyber-physical production systems because they are highly complex and heterogeneous environments with massive number of communicating machines. In this paper, we incorporate machine learning to automate network segregation, by efficiently classifying network end-devices into several groups through examining the traffic patterns that they generate. For performance evaluation, we analysed the data collected from a large segment of Infineon’s network in the context of the EU funded ECSEL-JU project “SemI40”. In particular, we applied feature selection and trained several supervised learning algorithms. Test results, using 10-fold cross validation, revealed that the algorithms generalise very well and achieve an accuracy up to 99.4%.

Abstract

In the 5G era, mobile devices are expected to play a pivotal role in our daily life. They will provide a wide range of appealing features to enable users to access a rich set of high quality personalized services. However, at the same time, mobile devices (e.g., smartphones) will be one of the most attractive targets for future attackers in the upcoming 5G communications systems. Therefore, security mechanisms such as mobile Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) are essential to protect mobile devices from a plethora of known and unknown security breaches and to ensure user privacy. However, despite the fact that a lot of research effort has been placed on IDSs for mobile devices during the last decade, autonomous host-based IDS solutions for 5G mobile devices are still required to protect them in a more efficient and effective manner. Towards this direction, we propose an autonomous host-based IDS for Android mobile devices applying Machine Learning (ML) methods to inspect different features representing how the device’s resources (e.g., CPU, memory, etc.) are being used. The simulation results demonstrate a promising detection accuracy of above 85%, reaching up to 99.99%.

Abstract

The recent explosive growth of mobile data traffic, the continuously growing demand for higher data rates, and the steadily increasing pressure for higher mobility have led to the fifth-generation mobile networks. To this end, network-coding (NC)-enabled mobile small cells are considered as a promising 5G technology to cover the urban landscape by being set up on-demand at any place, and at any time on any device. In particular, this emerging paradigm has the potential to provide significant benefits to mobile networks as it can decrease packet transmission in wireless multicast, provide network capacity improvement, and achieve robustness to packet losses with low energy consumption. However, despite these significant advantages, NC-enabled mobile small cells are vulnerable to various types of attacks due to the inherent vulnerabilities of NC. Therefore, in this paper, we provide a categorization of potential security attacks in NC-enabled mobile small cells. Particularly, our focus is on the identification and categorization of the main potential security attacks on a scenario architecture of the ongoing EU funded H2020-MSCA project “SECRET” being focused on secure network coding-enabled mobile small cells.
