158. Thermomechanical Effects in Metal Field Emitter Structures

Abstract

Analytical and numerical results concerning thermal and mechanical effects in operating metal field emitter structures (tips, gates and anodes) are summarized. For the most part, it is found that such effects are too small to constitute a reliability threat unless the geometries (via their effect on heat sinking) or the operating frequencies (via their ac heating contribution) are extreme. For ideal structures of conventional (SRI-like) geometry under normal operating conditions the only two thermomechanical effects with the potential for triggering failure are; (1) anode heating due to electron impact and (2) Maxwell stress on the field emitter tip.

Abstract

The integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity system can contribute to the development of a low-carbon economy. However, due to the intermittency and non-programmability of these sources, problems related to the management of local electricity grids may occur. A possible solution or limitation to these issues is given by the electrical storage. In addition, in the next future, domestic micro-grids are expected to play a fundamental role in electric power networks, driving both the academic and industrial research interests in developing highly efficient and reliable conversion and storage technologies. In this study, the behavior of a small-scale hybrid energy system for hydrogen production and storage has been predicted, by means of a developed calculation model, and the operational strategy of the system has been optimized with the aim to maximize the hydrogen production. In addition, with the aim to maximize the overall solar-to-hydrogen chain efficiency, the whole system model has been applied to different operating scenarios, to identify the optimal management strategy to control it.

Hierarchical graph models are a powerful tool for describing VLSI circuits. They combine the representation of a hierarchical decomposition of a circuit with a graph description of its topological structure in terms of components and connections. Structured Graphs are an example of such models. In this paper we consider the graph-theoretic problems of spanning trees and Steiner trees in structured graphs. Abstract

The growing pressure regarding immigration, the «real» and the «transmitted» exerted by the mass media favors the greater visibility of immigration and its conversion into a «social problem». This research inquires into the main axes of xenophobic discourse (the defense of national-cultural identity, the loss of group privileges, the increase in the decline of law and order and unemployment) and into the factors that favor its externalization (a mutual lack of knowledge, treatment by the mass media, political discourses, and the methodology used in its measurement). The explanation of theoretical-empirical studies is complemented by the analysis of recent and previous surveys that include the same xenophobia indicators. The joint use of K-means cluster and discriminant analysis helps to configure the evolution of attitudes towards immigration from 1993 to 2004 and gain knowledge of the variables that most affect their differentiation.
