Three methods of producing protective gas that have been used at Cherepovets steel-rolling plant are considered; this gas contains chemically pure nitrogen and hydrogen, with a dew point no higher than −40°C. The first method was introduced at the startup of the plant’s protective-gas station. The raw materials for gas production were liquid ammonia supplied by OAO Cherepovetskii Atom and industrial-grade nitrogen (containing up to 4% oxygen). After prolonged operation, the protective-gas station became worn-out and out of date. In 2002, the production of protective gas from chemically pure nitrogen and nitrogen-hydrogen mixture was introduced. This system was used for six years. Since 2008, protective gas has been produced by mixing chemically pure nitrogen and nitrogen-hydrogen mixture in special equipment. The consequent economic savings at Cherepovets steel-rolling plant are 13.6 million rub/yr.

The idea of creating a single-photon emission computed tomography unit with solid-state photomultipliers is not new [1], as the problems of analog-to-digital conversion with a lot of noise and a wide range of values of intrinsic spatial resolution of the detector in a center and relevant fields of view could not be solved by means of gamma-camera detector architectures based on vacuum photomultipliers. This paper offers a new SPECT imaging solution that is free from these problems.

Computer apodeling and economic analysis have shown that “oxygen” blast-furnace smelting (oxygen content of the blast 55–60% oxygen is both parcticable and highly cost-effective with a natural-gas consumption that makes it possible to obtain top gas suitable for producing ammonia. Here, the cost of the pig iron is reduced by more than 30%, while the wholesale price of the top gas increases in proportion to its calorific value.

Myocardium visualization using the most up-to-date tomographic techniques is extremely important in clinical cardiology. Myocardial viability assessment is of particular importance in management of patients with Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD). Although rest echocardiography is the most common in assessment of heart function, nuclear cardiology (SPECT and PET), and recently cardiac computed tomography and magnetic resonance become playing important clinical roles. Determining and understanding of real capabilities of these methods is of great necessity in this regard. This review examines the current abilities of current cardiac tomographic modalities for the assessment of myocardial perfusion in patients with known IHD.

Studies devoted to reactions of mono-olefins in the presence of alkali metals and their derivatives — mainly metallation, dimerisation, codimerisation, and isomerisation reactions — are reviewed. The catalysts, the reaction conditions, the product composition, and the problems of the reaction mechanisms are considered. It is shown that the specificity of the action of alkali metal catalysts is associated with the common features of the formation and reactions of organic derivatives of the alkali metals and that the reactions in the presence of such catalysts may serve as a basis for the development of promising procedures for the processing of mono-olefins.
