Abstract

Manufacturing cost reduction has become a major aspect for small and medium type of manufacturing industries (SME's) to stay competitive in the extremely tough market situations. This attempt is to study and enable the possibilities of providing optimal input process parameters using Box-Behnken's response surface method obey for the face milling of INCONEL-825. This Nickel Based Super Alloy (NBSA) used for tool and die making, is hard and tough to machine, which requires considerable Material Removal Rate (MRR) coupled with acceptable levels of surface roughness (Ra) based on varying requirements. A trial set of 27 experiments were planned to find the optimal process parameters in high speed face milling adopting an orthogonal array of design of experiments (DoE) under wet/dry and partial flow conditions. The influences of input cutting parameters on Ra and MRR were evaluated and optimal cutting parameter settings presented. The results show that MRR is maximized by optimization of input parameters while keeping Ra less than 0.25 Microns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Technological and societal change, along with organisational and market change (driven by contracting-out and privatisation), are “creating a new generation of infrastructures” [1]. While inter-organisational contractual arrangements can improve maintenance efficiency through consistent and repeatable patterns of action - unanticipated difficulties in implementation can reduce the performance of these arrangements. When faced with unsatisfactory performance of contracting-out arrangements, government organisations may choose to adapt and change these arrangements over time, with the aim of improving performance. This paper enhances our understanding of ‘next generation infrastructures’ by examining adaptation of the organisational arrangements for the maintenance of these assets, in a case study spanning 20 years.
