Abstract

This paper is focused on possible designs and predicted performances of two proposed highenergy, high-luminosity electron-hadron colliders: eRHIC at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL, Upton, NY, USA) and LHeC at Organisation Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN, Geneve, Switzerland). The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC, BNL) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC, CERN) are designed as versatile colliders. RHIC is colliding various species of hadrons staring from polarized protons to un-polarized heavy ions (such as fully stripped Au (gold) ions) in various combinations: polarized p-p, d-Au, Cu-Cu, Au-Au. Maximum energy in RHIC is 250 GeV (per beam) for polarized protons and 100 GeV/n for heavy ions. There is planed expansion of the variety of species to include polarized He3 and unpolarized fully stripped U (uranium). LHeC is designed to collide both un-polarized protons with energy up to 7 TeV per beam and fully stripped Pb (lead) ions with energy up to 3 TeV/n. Both eRHIC and LHeC plan to add polarized electrons (or/and positrons) to the list of colliding species in these versatile hadron colliders. In eRHIC 10-20 GeV electrons would collide with hadrons circulating in RHIC. In LHeC 50-150 GeV polarized leptons will collided with LHC’s hadron beams. Both colliders plan to operate in electron-proton (in RHIC case protons are polarized as well) and electron-ion collider modes. eRHIC and LHeC colliders are complimentary both in the energy reach and in their physics goals. I will discuss in this paper possible choices of the accelerator technology for the electron part of the collider for both eRHIC and LHeC, and will present predicted performance for the colliders. In addition, possible staging scenarios for these colliders will be discussed.

Abstract

High Order Mode (HOM) power is produced by high current linear accelerators. In this paper, we report a new method to estimate the HOM power generation and energy spread from multiple bunch patterns in the time domain on multiple HOMs. These methods can be used to evaluate the HOM power and energy spread induced by the HOM field, and to optimize the design of SRF cavities to minimize the HOM power and the energy spread induced by the HOMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at Brookhaven National Laboratory has served as a user facility for accelerator science for over a quarter of a century. Since its inception, the ATF in fact had undertaken the mission of accelerator stewardship of the Office of High Energy Physics (OHEP), even before the concept was fully formulated. In bringing advanced accelerator-science and technology to individual users, small groups of researchers, and large collaborations, the ATF offers a unique combination of a high-brightness 80-MeV electron beam synchronized to a 2-TW picosecond CO2 laser. The ATF now the flagship of the Accelerator Stewardship program of the OHEP, and thus will provide opportunities to small businesses to develop accelerator-based products, running the full gamut from the laboratory to the applications. At this juncture, the ATF has embarked upon a transformational upgrade of its capabilities. We describe our plan for greatly expanding the ATF's floor space, and the number of independent experiment halls, for upgrading the electron beam's energy in stages to 500-MeV, and the CO2 laser's peak power to 100 TW. This upgrade will afford a new, vast space for the laser and electron beam for conducting new research in accelerator science and technology that is at the forefront advanced accelerators and radiation sources, and to support the most innovative ideas in these fields. We will discuss emerging opportunities for scientific breakthroughs that include the following: Plasma Wakefield Acceleration (PWFA), extending the researches already pursued at the ATF; Laser Wakefield Acceleration (LWFA) wherein the longer laser wavelengths will engender a proportional increase in the beam's charge, while our linac will assure, for the first-time, the opportunity for undertaking detailed studies of seeding and staging of the LWFA. The laser will extend proton acceleration to the 100-200 MeV level, as is demanded for certain medical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objectives: Temporal artery biopsy (TAB) is performed in patients suspected of giant cell arteritis (GCA). Inadequate TAB specimen length is considered a possible explanation for a negative biopsy in patients with GCA. We investigated the association between specimen length and diagnostic yield of TAB.Method: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 240 patients who underwent TAB in a single hospital between 2000 and 2015. Patients were diagnosed with GCA based on positive TAB or, when TAB was negative, on clinical grounds that fulfilled the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 1990 criteria. Baseline clinical and laboratory features and TAB length were obtained from medical records. Among patients diagnosed with GCA, the rate of TAB positivity was calculated according to biopsy length (< 5, 5-9, 10-14, and ≥ 20 mm).Results: Out of 240 patients, 88 were diagnosed with GCA: 62 had a positive TAB and 26 were diagnosed based on clinical grounds despite a negative TAB. Among those who were diagnosed with GCA, the length of the TAB specimen was similar in those with a positive and a negative TAB (1.13 ± 1.68 mm vs. 1.15 ± 0.61 mm, respectively, p = 0.928). The TAB positivity rate was similar among all ranges of biopsy length [< 5 mm: 7/10 (70%); 5-9 mm: 22/31 (71%); 10-14 mm: 11/16 (69%); 15-19 mm: 11/16 (69%); ≥ 20 mm: 11/15 (73%, p = ns] and was similar to the overall biopsy positivity rate.Conclusions: Specimen length is not associated with diagnostic yield of TAB. Abstract

We report on the status of an electron RF-gun made of two superconductors: niobium and lead. The presented design combines the advantages of the RF performance of bulk niobium superconducting cavities and the reasonably high quantum efficiency of lead, as compared to other superconducting metals. The concept, mentioned in a previous paper, follows the attractive approach of all niobium superconducting RF-gun as it has been proposed by the BNL group. Measured values of quantum efficiency for lead at various photon energies, analysis of recombination time of photon-broken Cooper pairs for lead and niobium, and preliminary cold test results are discussed in this paper.

Abstract

3 pp. (2004)., A five-cell high current superconducting cavity for the electron cooling project at RHIC is under fabrication. Higher order modes (HOMs), one of main limiting factors for high current energy-recovery operation, are under investigation. Calculations of HOMs using time-domain methods in Mafia will be discussed and compared to calculations in the frequency domain. Beam breakup thresholds determined from numerical codes for the five-cell cavity as well as the superstructure will be presented. A possible motivation towards a 2x2 superstructure using the current five-cell design will also be discussed.

Abstract

This paper describes an experiment to demonstrate for the first time, laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA), driven by 1O.6-micrometer light from a CO2 laser. This experiment is also noteworthy because it will operate in a pseudoresonant LWFA regime in which the laser-pulse-length is too long for resonant LWFA, but too short for self-modulated LWFA. Nonetheless, high acceleration gradients are still possible. This experiment builds upon an earlier experiment called staged electron laser acceleration (STELLA) where efficient trapping and monoenergetic laser acceleration of electrons were demonstrated using inverse free electron lasers. The aim is to apply the STELLA approach of laser-driven microbunch formation followed by laser-driven trapping and acceleration to LWFA.
