154. Innovative Technology Advances Use of Electromagnetic MWD Offshore in Southern North Sea

Abstract

The underbalanced drilling campaign undertaken by Shell U.K. Exploration and Production (Shell Expro) offshore in the Southern North Sea has been on the cutting edge of UBD technology since its inception in 1997. Electromagnetic (EM) telemetry systems were incapable of performing in the Southern North Sea due to the depth and nature of the formations. However, recent enhancements to the technology have greatly expanded the scope of EM telemetry. The use of this technology has potential for expanding the scope of underbalanced operations possible in the Southern North Sea. A fundamental advantage of the EM telemetry system is the capability to transmit data independently of wellbore hydraulics. For example, down-hole pressure data can be transmitted to surface during pressure buildup tests and flow tests. Data can also be transmitted during trips, during connections, with pumps on or off, etc. The transmission of data is unaffected by loss of drilling fluid returns, the use of air, air-mist, foam or other multi-phase drilling fluid mediums generally associated with underbalanced drilling practices. The down-hole instrumentation can also be interrogated or reprogrammed at any time by direct communications protocol, which is completely independent of the rig or drilling activity. A new, innovative twist to enhance the use of EM telemetry involves the use of insulated casing to reduce signal attenuation and further expand the application of the technology where it has been previously out of reach. This paper discusses rationale for the use of EM telemetry in the Southern North Sea basin and the results of a recent successful field trial of the technology.

Abstract

The present invention provides a method of drilling a hole in a workpiece in order to control breakthrough of the workpiece comprising the steps of: a) initiating contact between a drill bit of a drill unit and the workpiece; b) operating the drill unit to rotate the drill bit to drill the workpiece; c) during drilling of the workpiece measuring the force, F and torque, T, experienced by the drill bit; d) calculating a variable F′, based on the measured force, F, representing the rate of change of F; e) calculating a variable, T′ based on the measured torque, T, representing the rate of change of T; f) calculating a variable F' representing the rate of change of F′; g) calculating a variable T' representing the rate of change of T'; h) detecting the onset of breakout of the workpiece by use of the variables F′, F', T′ and T'; i) thereby controlling the speed of rotation of the drill bit during breakthrough of the workpiece to control the degree of breakout of the drill bit from the workpiece. A drilling system is also disclosed.

157. Discriminating contact in lumen with a moving flexible digit using fibre Bragg grating sensing elements

Abstract

Minimal access procedures in surgery offer benefits of reduced patient recovery time and less pain, yet for the surgeon the task is more complex, as both tactile and visual perception of the working site is reduced. In this paper, experimental evidence of the performance of a novel sensing system embedded in an actuated flexible digit element is presented. The digit represents a steerable tip element of devices such as endoscopes and laparoscopes. This solution is able to discriminate types of contact and tissue interaction, and to feed back this information with the shape of the flexible digit. As an alternative to this information, force level, force distribution, and other quantifiable descriptors can also be evaluated. These can be used to aid perception in processes such as navigation and investigation of tissues through palpation. The solution is pragmatic, and by virtue of its efficient mechanical construction and a polymer construction, it offers opportunities for a disposable element with suitability for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other scanning environments. By using only four photonics sensing elements, full perception of tissue contact and the shape of the actuated digit can be described in the feedback of this information. The distributive sensory method applied to the sensory signals relies on the coupled values of the sensory data transients of the four deployed sensing elements to discriminate tissue interaction directly in near real time.

Abstract

Distributive tactile sensing is a method of tactile sensing in which a small number of sensors monitors the behaviour of a flexible substrate which is in contact with the object being sensed. This paper describes the first use of fibre Bragg grating sensors in such a system. Two systems are presented: the first is a one-dimensional metal strip with an array of four sensors, which is capable of detecting the magnitude and position of a contacting load. This system is favourably compared experimentally with a similar system using resistive strain gauges. The second system is a two-dimensional steel plate with nine sensors which is able to distinguish the position and shape of a contacting load, or the positions of two loads simultaneously. This system is compared with a similar system using 16 infrared displacement sensors. Each system uses neural networks to process the sensor data to give information concerning the type of contact. Issues and limitations of the systems are discussed, along with proposed solutions to some of the difficulties.

Abstract

Artificial tactile sensing systems using the distributive tactile sensing technique and fibre Bragg grating sensors are presented. A one-dimensional arrangement, with possible applications in an endoscope, is compared with a similar arrangement using conventional electronic sensors. A two-dimensional sensing surface is described, with potential applications in human balance and gait analysis, capable of detecting simultaneously the position and shape of an object placed upon it. It is believed that this work represents the first use of fibre Bragg grating sensors in a distributive sensing regime.

177. TiO2-coated CoCrMo: Improving the osteogenic differentiation and adhesion of mesenchymal stem cells in vitro.

Abstract

The current gold standard material for orthopedic applications is titanium (Ti), however, other materials such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) are often preferred due to their wear resistance and mechanical strength. This study investigates if the bioactivity of CoCrMo can be enhanced by coating the surface with titanium oxide (TiO2) by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD), thereby replicating the surface oxide layer found on Ti. CoCrMo, TiO2-coated CoCrMo (CCMT) and Ti substrates were used for this study. Cellular f-actin distribution was shown to be noticeably different between cells on CCMT and CoCrMo after 24 h in osteogenic culture, with cells on CCMT exhibiting greater spread with developed protrusions. Osteogenic differentiation was shown to be enhanced on CCMT compared to CoCrMo, with increased calcium ion content per cell ( p < 0.05), greater hydroxyapatite nodule formation ( p < 0.05) and reduced type I collagen deposition per cell ( p < 0.05). The expression of the focal adhesion protein vinculin was shown to be marginally greater on CCMT compared to CoCrMo, whereas AFM results indicated that CCMT required more force to remove a single cell from the substrate surface compared to CoCrMo ( p < 0.0001). These data suggest that CVD TiO2 coatings may have the potential to increase the biocompatibility of CoCrMo implantable devices. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

While minimal access procedures in surgery offer benefits of reduced patient recovery time and after pain, for the surgeon the task is more complex as both tactile and visual perception of the working site is reduced. In this paper, experimental evidence of the performance of a novel sensing system embedded in an actuated flexible digit element is presented. The digit is envisaged to be a steerable tip element of devices such as endoscopes and laparoscopes. This solution is able to retrieve tactile information in relation to contact with tissues and to feedback information on the shape of the flexible digit. As such the scheme is able to detect forces acting over the digit surface and can discriminate different types of contact, as well as to evaluate force level, force distribution and other quantifiable descriptors. These factors, in terms of perception, could augment processes in navigation and investigation through palpation in minimal access procedures. The solution is pragmatic, and by virtue of its low mechanical complexity and polymer construction, it offers a real opportunity for maintaining high sterility through disposability and application in magnetic environments such as MR scanning environments. Abstract

This study is based on an analysis of the different arguments utilized in the Pakistani news media in relation to the riots in Karachi after a bomb blast in the Ashura procession on 29 December 2009. From a framing analysis of the related columns and editorials written in The News International for a month after the incident, the article argues that the columnists and editorials articulated opinions and arguments based upon a variety of different interpretations of the causes of ethnic violence. However, there was some consensus around instrumentalist interpretations in the opinion and editorial columns, which emphasized the role of elites and governmental inadequacies in triggering the ethnic mobilization and conflict. The article concludes that any explanation of ethnic violence must combine insights from a variety of perspectives to explain riots. An enhanced understanding of the driving forces behind ethnic violence might lead to richer understandings about how to circumvent or prevent it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
