Search

We study congruences on the partial automorphism monoid of a finite rank free group action. We give a decomposition of a congruence on this monoid into a Rees congruence, a congruence on a Brandt semigroup and an idempotent separating congruence. The constituent parts are further described in terms of subgroups of direct and semidirect products of groups. We utilize this description to demonstrate how the number of congruences on the partial automorphism monoid depends on the group and on the rank of the action.

Objective: We present a technique for identification and statistical analysis of quasiperiodic spatiotemporal pressure signals recorded from multiple closely spaced sensors in the human colon. Methods: Identification is achieved by computing the continuous wavelet transform and cross-wavelet transform of these recorded signals. Statistical analysis is achieved by modelling the resulting time-averaged amplitudes or coherences in the frequency and frequency-phase domains as Gaussian processes over a regular grid, under the influence of categorical and numerical predictors that are specified by the experimental design as a mixed-effects model. Parameters of the model are inferred with Hamiltonian Monte Carlo. Results and Conclusion: We present an application of this method to colonic manometry data in healthy controls, to determine statistical differences in the spectra of pressure signals between different colonic regions and in response to a meal intervention. We are able to successfully identify and contrast features in the spectra of pressure signals between various predictors. Significance: This novel method provides fast analysis of manometric signals at levels of detail orders of magnitude beyond what was previously available. The proposed tractable mixed-effects model is broadly applicable to experimental designs with functional responses.

We present Co $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) of bulk LaCoO$_3$ across the thermally-induced spin-state crossover around 100~K. Owing to a high energy resolution of 25~meV, we observe unambiguously the dispersion of the intermediate-spin (IS) excitations in the low temperature regime. Approaching the intermediate temperature regime, the IS excitations are damped and the bandwidth is reduced. The observed behavior can be well described by a model of mobile IS excitons with strong attractive interaction, which we solve using dynamical mean-field theory for hard-core bosons. Our results provide a detailed mechanism of how high-spin (HS) and IS excitations interact to establish the physical properties of cobaltite perovskites.

We investigate the dynamics of the bistable regime of the generalized Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian (GJC), realised by a circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) system consisting of a transmon qubit coupled to a microwave cavity. In this regime we observe critical slowing down in the approach to the steady state. By measuring the response of the cavity to a step function drive pulse we characterize this slowing down as a function of driving frequency and power. We find that the critical slowing down saturates as the driving power is increased. We compare these results with the predictions of analytical and numerical calculations both with and without the Duffing approximation. We find that the Duffing approximation incorrectly predicts that the critical slowing down timescale increases exponentially with the drive, whereas the GJC model accurately predicts the saturation seen in our data, suggesting a different process of quantum activation.

The charge-density-wave (CDW) instability in the underdoped, pseudogap part of the cuprate phase diagram has been a major recent research focus, yet measurements of dynamic, energy-resolved CDW correlations are still in their infancy. We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the underdoped cuprate superconductor HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+\delta}$ ($T_c = 70$ K). At $T=250$ K, above the CDW order temperature $T_\mathrm{CDW} \approx 200$ K, we observe significant dynamic CDW correlations at about 40 meV. This energy scale is comparable to both the superconducting gap and the previously reported low-energy pseudogap. At $T = T_c$, a strong elastic CDW peak appears, but the dynamic correlations around 40 meV remain virtually unchanged. In addition, we observe a new feature: dynamic correlations at significantly higher energy, with a characteristic scale of about 160 meV. A similar scale was previously identified in other experiments as a high-energy pseudogap. The existence of three distinct features in the charge response is highly unusual for a CDW system, and suggests that charge order in the cuprates is closely related to the pseudogap phenomenon and more complex than previously thought. We further observe the paramagnon dispersion along [1,0], across the two-dimensional CDW wavevector $\boldsymbol{q}_\mathrm{CDW}$, which is consistent with magnetic excitations measured by inelastic neutron scattering. Unlike for some other cuprates, our results point to the absence of a discernible coupling between CDW and magnetic excitations.

Although charge density waves (CDWs) are omnipresent in cuprate high-temperature superconductors, they occur at significantly different wavevectors, confounding efforts to understand their formation mechanism. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to investigate the doping- and temperature-dependent CDW evolution in La2-xBaxCuO4 (x=0.115-0.155). We discovered that the CDW develops in two stages with decreasing temperature. A precursor CDW with quasi-commensurate wavevector emerges first at high-temperature. This doping-independent precursor CDW correlation originates from the CDW phase mode coupled with a phonon and "seeds" the low-temperature CDW with strongly doping dependent wavevector. The coupling between lattice vibration quanta and valence electrons can induce charge density modulations and decisively influence the transport properties of materials, e.g. leading to conventional superconductivity. In high critical temperature superconductors, where electronic correlation is the main actor, the actual role of electron-phonon coupling (EPC) is being intensely debated theoretically and investigated experimentally. We present an in-depth study of how the EPC strength can be obtained directly from resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) data through the theoretical approach derived by Ament et al. [EPL 95, 27008 (2011)]. The role of the model parameters (e.g. phonon energy $\omega_0$, intermediate state lifetime $1/\Gamma$, EPC matrix element $M$, and detuning energy $\Omega$) is thoroughly analyzed, providing general relations among them that can be used to make quantitative estimates of the dimensionless EPC $g = (M/\omega_0)^2$ without detailed microscopic modeling. We then apply these methods to very high resolution Cu $L_3$ edge RIXS spectra of three Nd$_{1+x}$Ba$_{2-x}$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ films. For the insulating antiferromagnetic parent compound the value of $M$ as a function of the in-plane momentum transfer is obtained for Cu-O bond-stretching (breathing) and bond-bending (buckling) phonon branches. For the underdoped and the nearly optimally doped samples, the effects of Coulomb screening and of charge-density-wave correlations on $M$ are assessed. In light of the anticipated further improvements of the RIXS experimental resolution, this work provides a solid framework for an exhaustive investigation of the EPC in cuprates and other quantum materials., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures

We show that a large class of Estimation of Distribution Algorithms, including, but not limited to, Covariance Matrix Adaption, can be written as a Monte Carlo Expectation-Maximization algorithm, and as exact EM in the limit of infinite samples. Because EM sits on a rigorous statistical foundation and has been thoroughly analyzed, this connection provides a new coherent framework with which to reason about EDAs.

We have studied the electronic structure of BaCoO$_3$ using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Co-$L_{2,3}$ and O-$K$ edges, magnetic circular dichroism at the Co-$L_{2,3}$ edges, as well as valence band hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The quantitative analysis of the spectra established that the Co ions are in the formal low-spin tetravalent 3$d^5$ state and that the system is a negative charge transfer Mott insulator. The spin-orbit coupling plays also an important role for the magnetism of the system. At the same time, a trigonal crystal field is present with sufficient strength to bring the 3$d^5$ ion away from the $J_{eff} = 1/2$ state. The sign of this crystal field is such that the $a_{1g}$ orbital is doubly occupied, explaining the absence of a Peierl's transition in this system which consists of chains of face-sharing CoO$_6$ octahedra. Moreover, with one hole residing in the $e_g^{\pi}$, the presence of an orbital moment and strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy can be understood. Yet, we also infer that crystal fields with lower symmetry must be present to reproduce the measured orbital moment quantitatively, thereby suggesting the possibility for orbital ordering to occur in BaCoO$_3$.

We used high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni $L_3$ edge to simultaneously investigate high-energy interband transitions characteristic of Ni-O bond ordering and low-energy collective excitations of the Ni spins in the rare-earth nickelates $R$NiO$_3$ ($R$ = Nd, Pr, La) with pseudocubic perovskite structure. With the support of calculations based on a double-cluster model we quantify bond order (BO) amplitudes for different thin films and heterostructures and discriminate short-range BO fluctuations from long-range static order. Moreover we investigate magnetic order and exchange interactions in spatially confined $R$NiO$_3$ slabs by probing dispersive magnon excitations. While our study of superlattices (SLs) grown in the (001) direction of the perovskite structure reveals a robust non-collinear spin spiral magnetic order with dispersive magnon excitations that are essentially unperturbed by BO modulations and spatial confinement, we find magnons with flat dispersions and strongly reduced energies in SLs grown in the $(111)_{\text{pc}}$ direction that exhibit collinear magnetic order. These results give insight into the interplay of different collective ordering phenomena in a prototypical 3$d$ transition metal oxide and establish RIXS as a powerful tool to quantitatively study several order parameters and the corresponding collective excitations within one experiment., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted in Physical Review B

We provide a novel experimental method to quantitatively estimate the electron-phonon coupling and its momentum dependence from resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra based on the detuning of the incident photon energy away from an absorption resonance. We apply it to the cuprate parent compound NdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$ and find that the electronic coupling to the oxygen half-breathing phonon mode is strongest at the Brillouin zone boundary, where it amounts to $\sim 0.17$ eV, in agreement with previous studies. In principle, this method is applicable to any absorption resonance suitable for RIXS measurements and will help to define the contribution of lattice vibrations to the peculiar properties of quantum materials., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

High resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has proven particularly effective in the determination of crystal field and spin excitations in cuprates. Its strength lies in the large Cu $L_{3}$ resonance and in the fact that the scattering cross section follows quite closely the single-ion model predictions, both in the insulating parent compounds and in the superconducting doped materials. However, the spectra become increasingly broader with (hole) doping, hence resolving and assigning spectral features has proven challenging even with the highest energy resolution experimentally achievable. Here we have overcome this limitation by measuring the complete polarization dependence of the RIXS spectra as function of momentum transfer and doping in thin films of NdBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$. Besides confirming the previous assignment of $dd$ and spin excitations (magnon, bimagnon) in the antiferromagnetic insulating parent compound, we unequivocally single out the actual spin-flip contribution at all dopings. We also demonstrate that the softening of $dd$ excitations is mainly attributed to the shift of the $xy$ peak to lower energy loss. These results provide a definitive assessment of the RIXS spectra of cuprates and demonstrate that RIXS measurements with full polarization control are practically feasible and highly informative., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

We build on the description of left congruences on an inverse semigroup in terms of the kernel and trace due to Petrich and Rankin. The notion of an inverse kernel for a left congruence is developed. Various properties of both the trace and inverse-kernel are discussed, in particular that both the trace and inverse-kernel maps are onto $\cap$-homomorphisms. The lattice of left congruences is identified as a subset of the direct product of the lattice of congruences on the idempotents and the lattice of full inverse subsemigroups. We use this to describe the lattice of left congruences on the bicyclic monoid. It is shown that that every finitely generated left congruence is the join of a finitely generated trace minimal left congruence and a finitely generated idempotent separating left congruence. Characterisations of inverse semigroups that are left Noetherian, or such that the universal congruence is finitely generated, are given.

The crystal-field (CF) splitting of the $^6H_{5/2}$ Hund's rule ground state of Sm$^{3+}$ in the strongly correlated topological insulator SmB$_6$ has been determined with high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Sm M$_5$ edge. The valence selectivity of RIXS allows isolating the crystal-field-split excited multiplets of the Sm$^{3+}$ (4$f^5$) configuration from those of Sm$^{2+}$ (4$f^6$) in intermediate valent SmB$_6$. The very large energy range of RIXS allows the crystal-field analysis of a high lying multiplet at about 2.4\,eV that has the same total angular momentum $J$ as the ground state so that ambiguities due to the elastic tail can be avoided. We find that the $\Gamma_7$ doublet and $\Gamma_8$ quartet of the $^6H_{5/2}$ Hund's rule ground state are split by $\Delta^{CF}_{^6H_{5/2}}$\,=\,20$\pm$10\,meV which sets an upper limit for the 4$f$ band width. This indicates an extremely large mass renormalization from the band structure value, pointing out the need to consider the coefficients of fractional parentage for the hopping of the 4$f$ electrons., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We present a new method for design problems wherein the goal is to maximize or specify the value of one or more properties of interest. For example, in protein design, one may wish to find the protein sequence that maximizes fluorescence. We assume access to one or more, potentially black box, stochastic "oracle" predictive functions, each of which maps from input (e.g., protein sequences) design space to a distribution over a property of interest (e.g. protein fluorescence). At first glance, this problem can be framed as one of optimizing the oracle(s) with respect to the input. However, many state-of-the-art predictive models, such as neural networks, are known to suffer from pathologies, especially for data far from the training distribution. Thus we need to modulate the optimization of the oracle inputs with prior knowledge about what makes `realistic' inputs (e.g., proteins that stably fold). Herein, we propose a new method to solve this problem, Conditioning by Adaptive Sampling, which yields state-of-the-art results on a protein fluorescence problem, as compared to other recently published approaches. Formally, our method achieves its success by using model-based adaptive sampling to estimate the conditional distribution of the input sequences given the desired properties.

High temperature cuprate superconductors consist of stacked CuO2 planes, with primarily two dimensional electronic band structures and magnetic excitations, while superconducting coherence is three dimensional. This dichotomy highlights the importance of out-of-plane charge dynamics, believed to be incoherent in the normal state, yet lacking a comprehensive characterization in energy-momentum space. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) with polarization analysis to uncover the pure charge character of a recently discovered collective mode in electron-doped cuprates. This mode disperses along both the in- and, importantly, out-of-plane directions, revealing its three dimensional nature. The periodicity of the out-of-plane dispersion corresponds to the CuO2 plane distance rather than the crystallographic c-axis lattice constant, suggesting that the interplane Coulomb interaction drives the coherent out-of-plane charge dynamics. The observed properties are hallmarks of the long-sought acoustic plasmon, predicted for layered systems and argued to play a substantial role in mediating high temperature superconductivity., Comment: This is the version of first submission. We present a probabilistic modeling framework and adaptive sampling algorithm wherein unsupervised generative models are combined with black box predictive models to tackle the problem of input design. In input design, one is given one or more stochastic "oracle" predictive functions, each of which maps from the input design space (e.g. DNA sequences or images) to a distribution over a property of interest (e.g. protein fluorescence or image content). Given such stochastic oracles, the problem is to find an input that is expected to maximize one or more properties, or to achieve a specified value of one or more properties, or any combination thereof. We demonstrate experimentally that our approach substantially outperforms other recently presented methods for tackling a specific version of this problem, namely, maximization when the oracle is assumed to be deterministic and unbiased. We also demonstrate that our method can tackle more general versions of the problem.

Charge density waves are a common occurrence in all families of high critical temperature superconducting cuprates. Although consistently observed in the underdoped region of the phase diagram and at relatively low temperatures, it is still unclear to what extent they influence the unusual properties of these systems. Using resonant x-ray scattering we carefully determined the temperature dependence of charge density modulations in (Y,Nd)Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ for three doping levels. We discovered short-range dynamical charge density fluctuations besides the previously known quasi-critical charge density waves. They persist up to well above the pseudogap temperature T*, are characterized by energies of few meV and pervade a large area of the phase diagram, so that they can play a key role in shaping the peculiar normal-state properties of cuprates., Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures, 11 supplementary figures

We report an Fe $L$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the unusual superconductor $\beta$-FeSe. The high energy resolution of this RIXS experiment ($\approx\,$55$\,$meV FWHM) made it possible to resolve low-energy excitations of the Fe $3d$ manifold. These include a broad peak which shows dispersive trends between 100-200$\,$meV along the $(\pi,0)$ and $(\pi,\pi)$ directions of the one-Fe square reciprocal lattice, and which can be attributed to paramagnon excitations. The multi-band valence state of FeSe is among the most metallic in which such excitations have been discerned by soft x-ray RIXS.

Using Cu-$L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) we measured the dispersion and damping of spin excitations (magnons and paramagnons) in the high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconductor (Bi,Pb)$_{2}$(Sr,La)$_{2}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ (Bi2201), for a large doping range across the phase diagram ($0.03\lesssim p\lesssim0.21$). Selected measurements with full polarization analysis unambiguously demonstrate the spin-flip character of these excitations, even in the overdoped sample. We find that the undamped frequencies increase slightly with doping for all accessible momenta, while the damping grows rapidly, faster in the (0,0)$\rightarrow$(0.5,0.5) nodal direction than in the (0,0)$\rightarrow$(0.5,0) antinodal direction. We compare the experimental results to numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) calculations that provide the spin dynamical structure factor $S(\textbf{Q},\omega)$ of the three-band Hubbard model. The theory reproduces well the momentum and doping dependence of the dispersions and spectral weights of magnetic excitations. These results provide compelling evidence that paramagnons, although increasingly damped, persist across the superconducting dome of the cuprate phase diagram; this implies that long range antiferromagnetic correlations are quickly washed away, while short range magnetic interactions are little affected by doping., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We describe a monaural speech enhancement algorithm based on modulation-domain Kalman filtering to blindly track the time-frequency log-magnitude spectra of speech and reverberation. We propose an adaptive algorithm that performs blind joint denoising and dereverberation, while accounting for the inter-frame speech dynamics, by estimating the posterior distribution of the speech log-magnitude spectrum given the log-magnitude spectrum of the noisy reverberant speech. The Kalman filter update step models the non-linear relations between the speech, noise and reverberation log-spectra. The Kalman filtering algorithm uses a signal model that takes into account the reverberation parameters of the reverberation time, $T_{60}$, and the direct-to-reverberant energy ratio (DRR) and also estimates and tracks the $T_{60}$ and the DRR in every frequency bin in order to improve the estimation of the speech log-magnitude spectrum. The Kalman filtering algorithm is tested and graphs that depict the estimated reverberation features over time are examined. The proposed algorithm is evaluated in terms of speech quality, speech intelligibility and dereverberation performance for a range of reverberation parameters and SNRs, in different noise types, and is also compared to competing denoising and dereverberation techniques. We have used high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to study a thin film of NdNiO$_3$, a compound whose unusual spin- and bond-ordered electronic ground state has been of long-standing interest. Below the magnetic ordering temperature, we observe well-defined collective magnon excitations along different high-symmetry directions in momentum space. The magnetic spectra depend strongly on the incident photon energy, which we attribute to RIXS coupling to different local electronic configurations of the expanded and compressed NiO$_6$ octahedra in the bond-ordered state. Both the noncollinear magnetic ground state and the observed site-dependent magnon excitations are well described by a model that assumes strong competition between the antiferromagnetic superexchange and ferromagnetic double-exchange interactions. Our study provides direct insight into the magnetic dynamics and exchange interactions of the rare-earth nickelates, and demonstrates that RIXS can serve as a site-selective probe of magnetism in these and other materials., Comment: Phys. We used x-ray absorption spectroscopy to study the orbital symmetry and the energy band splitting of (111) LaAlO${_3}$/SrTiO${_3}$ and LaAlO${_3}$/EuTiO${_3}$/SrTiO${_3}$ heterostructures, hosting a quasi two-dimensional electron system (q2DES), and of a Ti-terminated (111) SrTiO${_3}$ single crystal, also known to form a q2DES at its surface. We demonstrate that the bulk tetragonal Ti-3d D${_4}$${_h}$ crystal field is turned into trigonal D${_3}$${_d}$ crystal field in all cases. The symmetry adapted a${_1}$${_g}$ and e${^\pi_g}$ orbitals are non-degenerate in energy and their splitting, \Delta, is positive at the bare STO surface but negative in the heterostructures, where the a${_1}$${_g}$ orbital is lowest in energy. These results demonstrate that the interfacial symmetry breaking induced by epitaxial engineering of oxide interfaces has a dramatic effect on their electronic properties, and it can be used to manipulate the ground state of the q2DES., Comment: 6 pages article, plus 5 pages supplementary information

We have investigated the local low-energy excitations in CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$, a material discussed recently in the framework of strongly correlated Weyl semimetals, by means of Ce $M_5$ resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The availability of both $^2$F$_\frac{5}{2}$ and $^2$F$_\frac{7}{2}$ excitations of the Ce $4f^1$ configuration in the spectra allows for the determination of the crystal-electric field parameters that explain quantitatively the temperature dependence and anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility. The absence of an azimuthal dependence in the spectra indicates that all crystal-electric field states are close to being rotational symmetric. We show further that the non-negligible impact of the $\check A_6^0$ parameter on the ground state of CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ leads to a reduction of the magnetic moment due to multiplet intermixing. Charge order has now been observed in several cuprate high-temperature superconductors. We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiment on the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ that demonstrates the existence of dynamic correlations at the charge order wave vector. Upon cooling we observe a softening in the electronic response, which has been predicted to occur for a d-wave charge order in electron-doped cuprates. At low temperatures, the energy range of these excitations coincides with that of the dispersive magnetic modes known as paramagnons. Furthermore, measurements where the polarization of the scattered photon is resolved indicate that the dynamic response at the charge order wave vector primarily involves spin-flip excitations. We introduce a denotational semantic framework for shared-memory concurrent programs in a C11-style memory model. This denotational approach is an alternative to techniques based on "execution graphs" and axiomatizations, and it allows for compositional reasoning. Our semantics generalizes from traces (sequences of actions) to pomsets (partial orders of actions): instead of traces and interleaving, we embrace "true" concurrency. We build on techniques from our prior work that gives a denotational semantics to SPARC TSO. We add support for C11's wider range of memory orderings, e.g., acquire-release and relaxed, and support for local variables and various synchronization primitives, while eliminating significant amounts of technical bookkeeping. Our approach features two main components. We first give programs a syntax-directed denotation in terms of sets of pomsets of memory actions. We then give a race-detecting executional interpretation of pomsets using footprints and a local view of state.

The magnetic properties of rare earth compounds are usually well captured by assuming a fully localized f shell and only considering the Hund's rule ground state multiplet split by a crystal electrical field (CEF). Currently, the standard technique for probing CEF excitations in lanthanides is inelastic neutron scattering. Here we show that with the recent leap in energy resolution, resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering has become a serious alternative for looking at CEF excitations with some distinct advantages compared to INS. As an example we study the CEF scheme in CeRh2Si2, a system that has been intensely studied for more than two decades now but for which no consensus has been reached yet as to its CEF scheme. We used two new features that have only become available very recently in RIXS, high energy resolution of about 30 meV as well as polarization analysis in the scattered beam, to find a unique CEF description for CeRh2Si2. The result agrees well with previous INS and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Due to its strong resonant character, RIXS is applicable to very small samples, presents very high cross sections for all lanthanides, and further benefits from the very weak coupling to phonon excitation. The rapid progress in energy resolution of RIXS spectrometers is making this technique increasingly attractive for the investigation of the CEF scheme in lanthanides.

We demonstrate that combining standing-wave (SW) excitation with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) can lead to depth resolution and interface sensitivity for studying orbital and magnetic excitations in correlated oxide heterostructures. SW-RIXS has been applied to multilayer heterostructures consisting of a superconductor La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$(LSCO) and a half-metallic ferromagnet La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO). Easily observable SW effects on the RIXS excitations were found in these LSCO/LSMO multilayers. In addition, we observe different depth distribution of the RIXS excitations. The magnetic excitations are found to arise from the LSCO/LSMO interfaces, and there is also a suggestion that one of the dd excitations comes from the interfaces. SW-RIXS measurements of correlated-oxide and other multilayer heterostructures should provide unique layer-resolved insights concerning their orbital and magnetic excitations, as well as a challenge for RIXS theory to specifically deal with interface effects., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, plus supplemental materials (14 pages)

The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has recently been reported to emerge in magnetically-doped topological insulators. Although its general phenomenology is well established, the microscopic origin is far from being properly understood and controlled. Here we report on a detailed and systematic investigation of transition-metal (TM)-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$. By combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with complementary experimental techniques, i.e., scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), resonant photoemission (resPES), and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we provide a complete spectroscopic characterization of both electronic and magnetic properties. Our results reveal that the TM dopants not only affect the magnetic state of the host material, but also significantly alter the electronic structure by generating impurity-derived energy bands. Our findings demonstrate the existence of a delicate interplay between electronic and magnetic properties in TM-doped TIs. In particular, we find that the fate of the topological surface states critically depends on the specific character of the TM impurity: while V- and Fe-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$ display resonant impurity states in the vicinity of the Dirac point, Cr and Mn impurities leave the energy gap unaffected. The single-ion magnetic anisotropy energy and easy axis, which control the magnetic gap opening and its stability, are also found to be strongly TM impurity-dependent and can vary from in-plane to out-of-plane depending on the impurity and its distance from the surface. The SPARC TSO weak memory model is defined axiomatically, with a non-compositional formulation that makes modular reasoning about programs difficult. Our denotational approach uses pomsets to provide a compositional semantics capturing exactly the behaviours permitted by SPARC TSO. It uses buffered states and an inductive definition of execution to assign an input-output meaning to pomsets. We show that our denotational account is sound and complete relative to the axiomatic account, that is, that it captures exactly the behaviours permitted by the axiomatic account. Our compositional approach facilitates the study of SPARC TSO and supports modular analysis of program behaviour.

We present a single-channel phase-sensitive speech enhancement algorithm that is based on modulation-domain Kalman filtering and on tracking the speech phase using circular statistics. With Kalman filtering, using that speech and noise are additive in the complex STFT domain, the algorithm tracks the speech log-spectrum, the noise log-spectrum and the speech phase. Joint amplitude and phase estimation of speech is performed. Given the noisy speech signal, conventional algorithms use the noisy phase for signal reconstruction approximating the speech phase with the noisy phase. In the proposed Kalman filtering algorithm, the speech phase posterior is used to create an enhanced speech phase spectrum for signal reconstruction. The Kalman filter prediction models the temporal/inter-frame correlation of the speech and noise log-spectra and of the speech phase, while the Kalman filter update models their nonlinear relations. With the proposed algorithm, speech is tracked and estimated both in the log-spectral and spectral phase domains. The algorithm is evaluated in terms of speech quality and different algorithm configurations, dependent on the signal model, are compared in different noise types. Spin excitations in the overdoped high temperature superconductors Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ and (Bi,Pb)$_2$(Sr,La)$_{2}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ were investigated by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) as functions of doping and detuning of the incoming photon energy above the Cu-$L_3$ absorption peak. The RIXS spectra at optimal doping are dominated by a paramagnon feature with peak energy independent of photon energy, similar to prior results on underdoped cuprates. Beyond optimal doping, the RIXS data indicate a sharp crossover to a regime with a strong contribution from incoherent particle/hole excitations whose maximum shows a fluorescence-like shift upon detuning. The spectra of both compound families are closely similar, and their salient features are reproduced by exact-diagonalization calculations of the single-band Hubbard model on a finite cluster. This paper presents an algorithm for modulation-domain speech enhancement using a Kalman filter. The proposed estimator jointly models the estimated dynamics of the spectral amplitudes of speech and noise to obtain an MMSE estimation of the speech amplitude spectrum with the assumption that the speech and noise are additive in the complex domain. In order to include the dynamics of noise amplitudes with those of speech amplitudes, we propose a statistical "Gaussring" model that comprises a mixture of Gaussians whose centers lie in a circle on the complex plane. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using the perceptual evaluation of speech quality measure, segmental SNR measure, and short-time objective intelligibility measure. For speech quality measures, the proposed algorithm is shown to give a consistent improvement over a wide range of SNRs when compared to competitive algorithms. The Adaptive Poisson-Boltzmann Solver (APBS) software was developed to solve the equations of continuum electrostatics for large biomolecular assemblages that has provided impact in the study of a broad range of chemical, biological, and biomedical applications. APBS addresses three key technology challenges for understanding solvation and electrostatics in biomedical applications: accurate and efficient models for biomolecular solvation and electrostatics, robust and scalable software for applying those theories to biomolecular systems, and mechanisms for sharing and analyzing biomolecular electrostatics data in the scientific community. To address new research applications and advancing computational capabilities, we have continually updated APBS and its suite of accompanying software since its release in 2001. In this manuscript, we discuss the models and capabilities that have recently been implemented within the APBS software package including: a Poisson-Boltzmann analytical and a semi-analytical solver, an optimized boundary element solver, a geometry-based geometric flow solvation model, a graph theory based algorithm for determining p$K_a$ values, and an improved web-based visualization tool for viewing electrostatics.

Experimental evidence on high-Tc cuprates reveals ubiquitous charge density wave (CDW) modulations, which coexist with superconductivity. Although the CDW had been predicted by theory, important questions remain about the extent to which the CDW influences lattice and charge degrees of freedom and its characteristics as functions of doping and temperature. These questions are intimately connected to the origin of the CDW and its relation to the mysterious cuprate pseudogap. Here, we use ultrahigh resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to reveal new CDW character in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+{\delta} (Bi2212). At low temperature, we observe dispersive excitations from an incommensurate CDW that induces anomalously enhanced phonon intensity, unseen using other techniques. Near the pseudogap temperature T*, the CDW persists, but the associated excitations significantly weaken and the CDW wavevector shifts, becoming nearly commensurate with a periodicity of four lattice constants. The dispersive CDW excitations, phonon anomaly, and temperature dependent commensuration provide a comprehensive momentum space picture of complex CDW behavior and point to a closer relationship with the pseudogap state.

Charge modulations are considered as a leading competitor of high-temperature superconductivity in the underdoped cuprates, and their relationship to Fermi surface reconstructions and to the pseudogap state is an important subject of current research. Overdoped cuprates, on the other hand, are widely regarded as conventional Fermi liquids without collective electronic order. For the overdoped (Bi,Pb)2.12Sr1.88CuO6+{\delta} (Bi2201) high-temperature superconductor, here we report resonant x-ray scattering measurements revealing incommensurate charge order reflections, with correlation lengths of 40-60 lattice units, that persist up to at least 250K. Charge order is markedly more robust in the overdoped than underdoped regime but the incommensurate wave vectors follow a common trend; moreover it coexists with a single, unreconstructed Fermi surface, without pseudogap or nesting features, as determined from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This re-entrant charge order is reproduced by model calculations that consider a strong van Hove singularity within a Fermi liquid framework., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Ferrimagnetic Mn$_2$Fe$_x$Ga $(0.26 \leq x \leq 1.12)$ thin films have been characterised by X-ray diffraction, SQUID magnetometry, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and M\"{o}ssbauer spectroscopy with the aim of determining the structure and site-specific magnetism of this tetragonal, D0$_{22}$-structure Heusler compound. High-quality epitaxial films with low RMS surface roughness ($\sim 0.6$ nm) are grown by magnetron co-sputtering. The tetragonal distortion induces strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy along the $c$-axis with a typical coercive field $\mu_0 H\sim 0.8$ T and an anisotropy field ranging from $6$ to $8$ T. Upon increasing the Fe content $x$, substantial uniaxial anisotropy, $K_\mathrm{u} \geq 1.0$ MJ/m$^3$ can be maintained over the full $x$ range, while the magnetisation of the compound is reduced from $400$ to $280$ kA/m. The total magnetisation is almost entirely given by the sum of the spin moments originating from the ferrimagnetic Mn and Fe sublattices, with the latter being coupled ferromagnetically to one of the former. The orbital magnetic moments are practically quenched, and have negligible contributions to the magnetisation. The films with $x=0.73$ exhibit a high anomalous Hall angle of $2.5$ % and a high Fermi-level spin polarisation, above $51$ %, as measured by point contact Andreev reflection. The Fe-substituted Mn$_2$Ga films are highly tunable with a unique combination of high anisotropy, low magnetisation, appreciable spin polarisation and low surface roughness, making them very strong candidates for thermally-stable spin-transfer-torque switching nanomagnets with lateral dimensions down to $10$ nm., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

In electroencephalography (EEG) source imaging, the inverse source estimates are depth biased in such a way that their maxima are often close to the sensors. This depth bias can be quantified by inspecting the statistics (mean and co-variance) of these estimates. In this paper, we find weighting factors within a Bayesian framework for the used L1/L2 sparsity prior that the resulting maximum a posterior (MAP) estimates do not favor any particular source location. Due to the lack of an analytical expression for the MAP estimate when this sparsity prior is used, we solve the weights indirectly. First, we calculate the Gaussian prior variances that lead to depth un-biased maximum a posterior (MAP) estimates. Subsequently, we approximate the corresponding weight factors in the sparsity prior based on the solved Gaussian prior variances.
