It is well-documented that the population of much of the developed world is aging. On the one hand, this represents a success story in terms of reducing deaths from infectious and a number of systemic diseases, most notably cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, it also presents a challenge to provide adequate health services to a population with rapidly increasing longevity, as well as an opportunity to develop policies that can assist in promoting good physical and mental health. A number of authors have asked whether we are ready to meet the challenges of an aging population (Doyle et al., 2009; Connolly, 2012). Over the years, prominent psychologists have suggested that clinical psychology could play a greater role in the provision of services for older adults, and lamented the apparent lack of enthusiasm on the part of psychologists to work with this group (e.g. Karel et al., 2012). In this paper, we examine a range of questions pertinent to this theme: where are the psychologists in the provision of mental health services to older adults? What contribution can psychologists make to improve the mental health of this growing sector of the population? How can we encourage more psychologists to specialize in working with older adults? Background: Attitudes are known to exert a powerful influence on a range of behaviors. The objective of this study was to investigate the contribution of attitudes toward one's own aging to satisfaction with life and physical and mental health measured in a sample of community-dwelling older adults.Methods: Adults who were part of a larger study of health and well-being in rural and regional Australia aged ≥60 years (N = 421) completed a cross-sectional postal survey comprising the Attitudes to Aging Questionnaire, the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12), the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory, and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale.Results: Overall, attitudes to aging were positive in this sample. More positive attitudes to aging were associated with higher levels of satisfaction with life, better self-report physical and mental health on the SF-12, and lower levels of anxiety and depression, after controlling for confounding variables. Better financial status and being employed were both associated with more positive attitudes to aging and better self-reported physical health. Relationship status was also significantly associated with mental health and satisfaction with life, but not physical health.Conclusion: The promotion of successful aging is increasingly becoming important in aging societies. Having positive attitudes to aging may contribute to healthier mental and physical outcomes in older adults. Background Recognition of the significance of anxiety disorders in older adults is growing. The revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) provides a timely opportunity to consider potential improvements to diagnostic criteria for psychiatric disorders for use with older people. The authors of this paper comprise the Advisory Committee to the DSM5 Lifespan Disorders Work Group, the purpose of which was to generate informative responses from individuals with clinical and research expertise in the field of late-life anxiety disorders. Methods This paper reviews the unique features of anxiety in later life and synthesizes the work of the Advisory Committee. Results Suggestions are offered for refining our understanding of the effects of aging on anxiety and other disorders (e.g., mood disorders) and changes to the DSM5 criteria and text that could facilitate more accurate recognition and diagnosis of anxiety disorders in older adults. Several of the recommendations are not limited to the study of anxiety but rather are applicable across the broader field of geriatric mental health. Conclusions DSM5 should provide guidelines for the thorough assessment of avoidance, excessiveness, and comorbid conditions (e.g., depression, medical illness, cognitive impairment) in anxious older adults. Measuring medical and allied health students' attitudes towards older people has been identified as an important research area. The present study compared the use of implicit and explicit attitude measures. Sixty-five undergraduates completed one explicit measure, the Fraboni Scale of Ageism (FSA), (Fraboni, Saltstone, & Hughes, 1990) and one implicit measure, the Implicit Association Test. They had positive explicit and neutral implicit attitudes towards older people, suggesting more positive attitudes than previously reported. These attitudes were related but there were discrepancies. Because explicit measures are likely to be influenced by factors such as social desirability, the implicit measure might be a more reliable measure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Subjective memory complaints (SMC) have been identified as a possible precursor to cognitive decline and may indicate a need for an early intervention for at‐risk older adults. However, it is well‐established that low mood is associated with SMC, leading to claims that memory concerns in older people may often reflect primarily psychological symptoms. This study aimed to determine the effect of low mood on subjective memory appraisal in older adults. Method: We used a film‐based mood induction procedure (MIP) to test the effect of sad vs. neutral mood on subjective appraisal of memory performance in an experimental 2X2 between‐subjects design. Participants were 98 cognitively unimpaired older people (n=45 with SMC), randomised to the sad MIP (n=56) or the neutral MIP (n=42). All participants completed measures of trait SMC and ruminative self‐focused attention (RSFA) as well as perceived performance and metacognitive experience (ME) following the MIP and completion of a face‐name and a maze‐learning task. Result: Participants in the sad MIP condition (M=42.75, SD=30.97) reported significantly greater sadness than those in the neutral condition following the manipulation (M=11.57, SD=18.44). The association between objective and subjective memory performance was stronger for cued recall on the face‐name task (r=.61, p=.001) and was weaker free recall on the face‐name task (r=.26, p=0.016) as well on the maze‐learning task (r=‐.16, p=.200). Contrary to expectation, there was no significant effect of mood condition on perceived performance on Face‐Name learning task (MD=‐2.43, p=498), but sad mood was associated with better perceived performance on the maze‐learning task (MD=13.34, p=.015). Results also indicated that RSFA and ME were implicated as mechanisms in subjective memory performance appraisal. Conclusion: Findings indicate that SMC is a complex multifaceted phenomenon which may be underpinned by maladaptive self‐regulation and attentional systems, suggesting that psychological interventions may be appropriate for many older adults with SMC. This qualitative study evaluated an attachment-based group parenting program that utilises mentalisation-based approach. The Building Early Attachment and Resilience (BEAR) program was designed to promote parent-child attachment across the perinatal period and has pre- and post-natal arms. The post-natal component targets mothers and infants at risk for early disturbances of attachment to, and emotional interaction. This evaluation study aimed to explore mothers' subjective experiences of the post-natal BEAR program in encouraging mothers' reflection on their role as a parent. Thirteen mothers were interviewed. Transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis, with five themes emerging. Overall, mothers reported that the intervention promoted reflection about the parenting role, contributed to perceptions of improved mother-infant interactions and increased understanding of their infant's internal experiences. Screening measures such as the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) (Sheikh and Yesavage, 1986) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) (Zigmond and Snaith, 1983) are important tools in the recognition of depressive symptoms in older people. While these measures are widely used, there is evidence of specific weaknesses in some cohorts and contexts, with the GDS-15 showing limitations in the context of cognitive impairment (Gilley and Wilson, 1997), and the depression subscale of the HADS (HADS-D) losing sensitivity in the context of older participants in hospital inpatient settings (Davies et al., 1993). Introduction: Older carers or 'care partners' of older people experiencing care needs often provide essential support, at times while neglecting their own health and well‐being. This is an increasingly frequent scenario due to both demographic changes and policy shifts towards ageing in place. Multiple community stakeholders within the care and support ecosystem hold valuable expertise about the needs of older care partners, and the programme and policy responses that may better support their health and well‐being. The aim of this study was to identify the perspectives of stakeholders obtained through the codesign phase of a multicomponent research project investigating new models of care and support for older care partners suitable for the Australian context. Methods: Principles of codesign were used to engage a purposeful sample of older care partners, health professionals, researchers, policy makers and health service administrators. Participants took part in a series of three codesign workshops conducted remotely via video conferencing. The workshops were supported with briefing material and generated consensus‐based summaries, arriving at a preferred service model. Findings: This paper reports the research design and structure of the codesign panels, the range of findings identified as important to support the health and well‐being of older carers of older people, and the resulting service model principles. The codesigned and preferred model of care is currently being prepared for implementation and evaluation in Australia. Public Contribution: This study was conducted using codesign methodology, whereby stakeholders including older care partners and others involved in supporting older carers, were integrally involved with design, development, results and conclusions. • Poor sleep is highly prevalent during the menopause transition. • Self-compassion explained variance in self-reported sleep quality in a community sample of midlife women. • Self-compassion fully accounted for the effect of vasomotor symptoms on sleep quality. • Self-compassion may be a stronger predictor of sleep quality than vasomotor symptoms. • Future interventions could focus on self-compassion training for midlife women with sleep difficulties. With poor sleep highly prevalent during the menopause transition, there is a need to better understand modifiable psychological resources that may be associated with improved sleep. Hence, we investigated whether self-compassion can explain variance in self-reported sleep quality in midlife women, over and above vasomotor symptoms. This cross-sectional study (N = 274) used questionnaire data from self-report measures of sleep, hot flushes and night sweats, hot flush interference, and self-compassion, with analyses conducted using sequential (hierarchical) regression. Poor sleep, as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, was prevalent and significantly worse in the subsample of women with hot flushes and night sweats, g = 0.28, 95 % CI [0.04, 0.53]. The interference of hot flushes in everyday life (β = 0.35, p <.01), but not their frequency, predicted self-reported sleep quality. Once self-compassion was added to the model it was the only predictor of poor sleep (β = −0.32, p <.01). When positive self-compassion and self-coldness were considered separately, the effect on sleep quality appeared to be attributable to self-coldness scores alone (β = 0.29, p <.05). Self-compassion may have a stronger relationship with self-reported sleep quality in midlife women than vasomotor symptoms. Future intervention-based research could test the efficacy of self-compassion training for midlife women experiencing sleep disturbances, as this may be an important and modifiable psychological resilience factor. Background: Physical inactivity is a modifiable risk factor for dementia, but there remains a research translation gap in effective physical activity (PA) implementation, particularly in the longer-term. The INDIGO trial investigated the effectiveness of a six-month PA intervention for inactive older adults at risk of cognitive decline with subjective cognitive decline or mild cognitive impairment.Objective: This follow-up study aimed to collect feedback from INDIGO participants about their experience of involvement in the trial, including barriers and enablers to longer-term maintenance of PA.Methods: A qualitative study using semi-structured individual interviews was conducted and transcripts analyzed thematically. All INDIGO trial completers were invited, with 29 participating (follow-up period 27-66 months post-baseline).Results: At long-term follow-up, participants described INDIGO trial participation as beneficial. The theme of "Motivation" (subthemes: structure and accountability, knowledge and expected benefits, preferences and motivation, tools) followed by "Situation" (subthemes: environment and time, social aspects, aging and physical health) appeared to be critical to PA "Action". Most participants had a positive view of goal-setting and peer mentoring/support, but there was some polarization of opinion. Key factors to longer-term "Maintenance" of PA were self-efficacy and perceived benefits, habit formation, and for some participants, enjoyment.Conclusion: PA interventions for older adults at risk of cognitive decline should include behavior change techniques tailored to the individual. Effective techniques should focus on "Motivation" (particularly structure and accountability) and "Situation" factors relevant to individuals with the aim of developing self-efficacy, habit formation, and enjoyment to increase the likelihood of longer-term PA maintenance. The cognitive functioning of children who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) has received less attention than their emotional‐behavioral outcomes. Drawing upon data from 615 (48.4% female) 10‐year‐old Australian‐born children and their mothers (9.6% of mothers born in non‐English speaking countries) participating in a community‐based longitudinal study between 2004 and 2016, this study examined the associations between IPV in infancy and cognition in middle childhood (at age 10). Results showed that IPV in the first 12 months of life was associated with lower general cognitive ability and poorer executive attention but not working memory skills. IPV in middle childhood (in the 10th year postpartum) was not associated with cognition. This study provides evidence for the long‐term impact of early life exposure to IPV on children's cognition, and points to the importance of early intervention to optimize development. Psychosocial interventions targeting the specific needs of people affected by younger-onset dementia are lacking. Younger-onset dementia refers to dementia where symptom onset occurs at less than 65 years old. Because of its occurrence in middle age, the impact on spouses is particularly marked and dyadic-based interventions are recommended. Music And Psychology & Social Connections (MAPS) is a novel online intervention, informed by the theory of adaptive coping by Bannon et al. (2021) for dyads affected by younger-onset dementia. MAPS combines therapeutic songwriting, cognitive behaviour therapy, and a private social networking group that focuses on the dyads. This will be a randomised controlled trial with a waitlist control. The primary aims are to assess whether MAPS improves depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms in caregivers, with secondary aims to assess whether MAPS improves depressive symptoms in people with younger-onset dementia. The trial also aims to assess dyadic social connectedness; caregiver coping skills; and neuropsychiatric symptoms in people with younger-onset dementia. We will recruit 60 dyads to participate in a group-based weekly online program for 8 weeks facilitated by a credentialed music therapist and psychologist. Sessions 1 and 8 will include both caregivers and people with younger-onset dementia and Sessions 2–7 will involve separate group sessions for caregivers and those with dementia. Background Older people are more likely to experience bereavements than any other age group. However, in healthcare and society, their grief experiences and support needs receive limited attention. Through innovative, arts-based research poetry, this study aimed to capture older people's bereavement stories and the effects of grief on their physical and mental health. Method Semi-structured in-depth interviews with 18 bereaved older adults were analysed using thematic and poetic narrative analysis, following a five-step approach of immersion, creation, critical reflection, ethics and engagement. Results Research poems were used to illustrate three themes of bereavement experiences among older adults: feeling unprepared, accumulation of losses and ripple effects of grief. While half of participants reported that the death of their family member was expected, many felt unprepared despite having experienced multiple bereavements throughout their life. Instead, the accumulation of losses had a compounding effect on their health and well-being. While these ripple effects of grief focussed on emotional and mental health consequences, many also reported physical health effects like the onset of a new condition or the worsening of an existing one. In its most extreme form, grief was connected with a perceived increased mortality risk. Conclusions By using poetry to draw attention to the intense and often long-lasting effects of grief on older people's health and well-being, this article offers emotional, engaging and immersive insights into their unique bereavement experiences and thereby challenges the notion that grief has an expiry date.
