Abstract

This paper presents a low power read-out front-end for 3-axis MEMS capacitive accelerometer. The front-end includes the analog preamplifier (to sense the signal coming from the MEMS) and a Successive-Approximation 10b A/D Converter, for digitalization and off-chip digital-signal-processing. Power minimization is achieved by using a continuous-time sensing preamplifier (i.e. constant-charge capacitance-to-voltage conversion) and SAR-ADC with bridge capacitive reduction. Preamplifier programmable in-band gain allows to accommodate different MEMS sensitivities. A very high-impedance MOS transistor is used for MEMS biasing, thus providing very low frequency (<1 Hz) AC coupling. In a 0.13 μm CMOS technology, the full channel consumes 90 μW from a single 1.2 V supply voltage, and achieves an equivalent 67.9 dB@SNR in [1 Hz-4 kHz] bandwidth by exploiting oversampling ratio. Abstract

Ocular hypertension is the main risk factor in primary open-angle glaucoma development. Nevertheless it is well known that sometimes ocular hypertension does not lead to fullyfledged glaucoma. In this study patients with simple ocular hypertension were followed with some of the most sensitive techniques available to detect early glaucomatous damage. The aim of the study was to see whether treatment with beta-blockers had any effect on development of ocular hypertension toward fullyfledged glaucoma. 26 patients, 14 males and 12 females, with a mean age of 60 years were studied. All had simple ocular hypertension, without any alteration of the visual field, pattern ERG and optic nerve head morphology; their visual acuity was 1.0, while no other ocular pathologies or specific risk factors for primary open-angle glaucoma (familiarity, diabetes, etc.) was present. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: one group was treated with levobunolol 0.5% 1 drop twice daily in both eyes, while the other group underwent no treatment. Visual acuity and IOP measurements, automated perimetry and pattern-ERG were performed at the onset, than after 6, 12, 18 and 24 months; optic disk stereoscopic photography was repeated only after 12 and 18 months. The data underwent a statistical analysis with t-test for paired data. No variations were observed in all analyzed parameters a part from a significant reduction of IOP in treated group and an improvement of visual field index mean defect in both groups.

Abstract

The coasts located between 39°S and 41°S in the Argentinean biogeographic province have been described by impoverished seaweed assemblages, however the floristic information about this region is sparse. The aim of this study was to survey the intertidal seaweeds inhabiting three sites in the oceanographic system "El Rincon" (Buenos Aires, Argentina). A total of 42 taxa were identified with a dominance of Rhodophyta species. The sandstone outcrops (SO) had 29 taxa, whereas both the tidal flat (TF) and oyster reefs (OR) had 11 taxa. The estuarial species Ulva intestinalis and Ulva prolifera were recorded in TF, whereas calcified macroalgae were only found in SO. The differences in richness and composition of seaweed assemblages were associated with substrate type, wave exposure, incident light and salinity. These differences were also evidenced by a dissimilar number of functional groups, which was higher in SO with a dominance of filamentous macroalgae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We will present our work on the development of ultra-high-resolution detectors for alpha particle spectrometry. These detectors, based on superconducting transition-edge sensors, offer energy resolution that is five to ten times better than conventional silicon detectors. Using these microcalorimeter detectors, the isotopic composition of mixed-actinide samples can be determined rapidly without the need for actinide separation chemistry to isolate each element, or mass spectrometry to separate isotopic signatures that can not be resolved using traditional alpha spectrometry (e.g. Pu-239/Pu-240, or Pu-238/Am-241). This paper will cover the detector and measurement system, actinide source preparation, and the quantitative isotopic analysis of a number of forensics- and safeguards-relevant radioactive sources.
