In this paper, we present a novel hierarchical multiscale Bayesian algorithm for electromagnetic brain imaging using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG). In particular, we present a solution to the source reconstruction problem for sources that vary in spatial extent. We define sensor data measurements using a generative probabilistic graphical model that is hierarchical across spatial scales of brain regions and voxels. We then derive a novel Bayesian algorithm for probabilistic inference with this graphical model. This algorithm enables robust reconstruction of sources that have different spatial extent, from spatially contiguous clusters of dipoles to isolated dipolar sources. We compare the new algorithm with several representative benchmarks on both simulated and real brain activities. The source locations and the correct estimation of source time courses used for the simulated data are chosen to test the performance on challenging source configurations. In simulations, performance of the novel algorithm shows superiority to several existing benchmark algorithms. We also demonstrate that the new algorithm is more robust to correlated brain activity present in real MEG and EEG data and is able to resolve distinct and functionally relevant brain areas with real MEG and EEG datasets.

The aerodynamic performance of wind turbine airfoils is crucial for the efficiency and reliability of wind energy systems, with leading-edge roughness significantly impacting blade performance. This study conducts numerical simulations on the DU 00-W-401 airfoil to investigate the effects of leading-edge roughness. Results reveal that the rough airfoil exhibits a distinctive "N"-shaped lift coefficient curve. The formation mechanism of this nonlinear lift curve is primarily attributed to the development of the trailing-edge separation vortex and variations in the adverse pressure gradient from the maximum thickness position to the trailing-edge confluence. The impact of different roughness heights is further investigated. It is discovered that when the roughness height is higher than 0.3 mm, the boundary layer can be considered fully turbulent, and the lift curve shows the "N" shape stably. When the roughness height is between 0.07 mm and 0.1 mm, a transitional state can be observed, with several saltation points in the lift curve. The main characteristics of different flow regimes based on different lift curve segments are summarized. This research enhances the understanding of the effects of leading-edge roughness on the aerodynamic performance of a thick wind turbine airfoil, and the simulation method for considering the effect of leading-edge roughness is practical to be applied on large-scale wind turbine blade to estimate the aerodynamic performance under rough leading-edge conditions, thereby supporting advancements in wind turbine technology and promoting the broader adoption of renewable energy. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented shift towards online learning, compelling university students worldwide to engage in self-directed learning within remote environments. Despite the increasing importance of online education, the factors driving students' motivation for self-directed online learning, particularly those involving economic incentives, have not been thoroughly explored. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing large-scale data collected from 19,023 university students across China during the pandemic. Using mixed Bayesian networks and multigroup structural equation modeling, the study explores the complex relationships between personal characteristics, academic characteristics, the academic environment, and students' motivation for self-directed online learning. The results reveal significant associations between online self-directed learning motivation and personal characteristics. such as gender and age, academic characteristics, such as education level and learning incentives, and the geographic location of the school within the academic environment. Moreover, the causal relationship between school location and online self-directed learning motivation varies by gender and educational level. This research not only provides new empirical support for the theoretical framework of online learning motivation but also contributes to the broader fields of educational psychology and online learning research. ObjectiveMagnetoencephalography (MEG) has a well-recognized weakness at detecting deeper brain activities. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for selective detection of deep sources by suppressing interference signals from superficial sources in MEG measurements.ApproachThe proposed algorithm combines the beamspace preprocessing method with the dual signal space projection (DSSP) interference suppression method. A prerequisite of the proposed algorithm is prior knowledge of the location of the deep sources. The proposed algorithm first derives the basis vectors that span a local region just covering the locations of the deep sources. It then estimates the time-domain signal subspace of the superficial sources by using the projector composed of these basis vectors. Signals from the deep sources are extracted by projecting the row space of the data matrix onto the direction orthogonal to the signal subspace of the superficial sources.Main resultsCompared with the previously proposed beamspace signal space separation (SSS) method, the proposed algorithm is capable of suppressing much stronger interference from superficial sources. This capability is demonstrated in our computer simulation as well as experiments using phantom data.SignificanceThe proposed bDSSP algorithm can be a powerful tool in studies of physiological functions of midbrain and deep brain structures.

Single-sided deafness (SSD) or profound unilateral hearing loss obligates the only serviceable ear to capture all acoustic information. This loss of binaural function taxes cognitive resources for accurate listening performance, especially under adverse environments or challenging tasks. We hypothesized that adults with SSD would manifest both functional and structural brain plasticity compared to controls with normal binaural hearing. We evaluated functional alterations using magnetoencephalographic imaging (MEGI) of brain activation during performance of a moderately difficult auditory syllable sequence reproduction task and assessed structural integrity using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). MEGI showed the SSD cohort to have increased induced oscillations in the theta band over the left superior temporal cortex and decreased induced gamma band oscillations over the frontal and parietal cortices between 175 and 475 ms following stimulus onset. DTI showed the SSD cohort to have extensive fractional anisotropy (FA) reduction in both auditory and non-auditory tracts and regions. Overlaying functional and structural changes revealed by the two imaging techniques demonstrated close registration of cortical areas and white matter tracts that expressed brain plasticity. Hence, complete loss of input from one ear in adulthood triggers both functional and structural alterations to dorsal temporal and frontal-parietal areas.
