A sample of nine bright Seyfert 1 and NELG type galaxies, observed with BeppoSAX, is analyzed to assess on a truly broad band basis (0.1-200 keV) the issue of the spectral contributions of Compton reflection and iron line fluorescence from circumnuclear gas. The empirical description adopted for the direct continuum is the commonly used power law with an exponential cut-off. The most direct test of the theoretical predictions, namely that the equivalent width of the line, Walpha, and the strength R of the reflection relative to the direct continuum are closely related to each other, gives a substantially positive result, that is their mean ratio is very close to expectation, and only a modest spread in the iron abundance seems implied. The existence of a steep correlation between R and the slope Gamma of the power law is not confirmed. A weak evidence is found that the existence of a very shallow trend to increase on average with Gamma cannot be altogether excluded in both R and Walpha, but needs to be tested with a larger sample. The energy Ef in the exponential cut-off spans a range from about 80 to more than 300 keV. A possible correlation is found, with Ef increasing on average with Gamma: if ignored, for instance by keeping Ef at a fixed value in a sample study, it could be cause of artificial steepening in a correlation between R and Gamma., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We present preliminary results of XMM-Newton observations of 5 Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), part of a mini-survey program dedicated to 10 ULIRGs selected from the bright IRAS sample. For 3 of them (IRAS 20551-4250, IRAS 19254-7245 and Mkn 231) we find strong evidence for the presence of a hidden AGN, while for two others (IRAS 20110-4156 IRAS 22491-1808) the S/N ratio of the data does not allow us to be conclusive. In particular, we have detected a strong Fe-K line in the X-ray spectra of IRAS19254-7245, with an equivalent width (~2 keV) suggestive that most of the energy source in this object is due to a deeply buried AGN., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Latex manuscript, Proc. We present preliminary results from a study with XMM-Newton of the galactic serendipitous sources in a sample of 28 nearby Seyfert galaxies (with D < 22 Mpc). We concentrate here on a subset of four galaxies, namely: NGC3185, NGC3486, NGC3941, and NGC4565. In these galaxies we found six ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX). The large collecting area of XMM-Newton makes the statistics sufficient to perform spectral fitting with simple models. We shortly discuss the results obtained so far., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures. We report here preliminary results from a survey of nearby Seyfert galaxies using the EPIC CCDs on board XMM-Newton. The total sample consists of 28 Seyfert galaxies, and constitute a well-defined, complete (B<12.5 mag), and volume-limited (D<22 Mpc) sample of Seyfert galaxies in the northern (Delta > 0 deg.) hemisphere. The survey has been initiated in June, 2001, and we report here the results for the 6 objects analyzed so far, namely: NGC3185, NGC3486, NGC3941, NGC4138, NGC4565, and NGC5033. The main goal of this survey is to obtain a better and unbiased understanding of the ``typical'' Seyfert X-ray spectrum (e.g. the distribution of their absorption column density) in the local Universe. This is crucial to verify the predictions and, thus, to validate unified models, and is a fundamental parameter of synthesis models for the X-ray background. A companion poster (paper II: L. We present BeppoSAX observations of 6 ``type-2'' LINER and ``transition'' galaxies (NGC3379, NGC3627, NGC4125, NGC4374, NGC5195 and NGC5879)from the Ho et al. (1997) spectroscopic sample of nearby galaxies. All objects are detected in the 2-10 keV band, having luminosities in the range L(2-10 keV) ~ 1x10^{39}- 1x10^{40} erg s-1. The PDS upper limits above 10 keV place constraints on the presence of a heavily obscured AGN in the case of NGC3379 and NGC4125. No significant variability is detected in any of the objects. The spectra are described in most cases by a simple power-law model with a spectral slope of 1.7-2.5 while there is evidence neither for a significant absorption above the Galactic nor for an FeK emission line. Therefore, based on the spectral properties alone, it is difficult to differentiate between a low-luminosity AGN or a star-forming galaxy scenario. However, imaging observations of NGC3627 and NGC5195 with Chandra ACIS-S reveal very weak nuclear sources while most of the X-ray flux originates either in off-nuclear point sources or in diffuse emission. The above clearly argue in favour of a star-forming origin for the bulk of the X-ray emission, at least in the above two sources., Comment: 10 pages, to appear in A&A

We present preliminary results from a XMM-Newton spectroscopic survey of hard (2 -10 keV) X-ray sources detected serendipitously in seven EPIC FOVs. All observations were performed during the performance/verif ication phase. The resulting sample consists of 39 sources with fluxes ranging from 3 to 80 $\t imes$ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 2-10 keV band. Most of these sources (23 out of 39, i.e. 60%) are fainter than 8 $\times $ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The sources have been selected in order to obtain detailed X-ray spectral inform ation, that are unprecedented at such low flux levels and for such a large sample. To date we also have optical counterparts for 23 out of 39 objects, with 0.0058 $\leq$ $z$ $\leq$ 1.187. About 70% of the sources have spectra well fitted with a simple power law model with Galactic absorption. For 9 objects (five of type 1, one of type 2 and three normal galaxies) absorption in excess to the Galactic one is required. Additional emission/absorption components (i.e. soft excess, warm absorber) are observed in 4 sources., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. In the present work we report the BeppoSAX observation of the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC 526A in the band 0.1-150 keV. The high energy instrument onboard, PDS, has succeeded in measuring for the first time the spectrum of this source in the 13-150 keV range. The combined analysis of all Narrow Field Instruments provides a power law spectral index of ~ 1.6 and confirms the flat spectral nature of this source. Although NGC 526A varies strongly in the 2-10 keV over period of months/years, its spectral shape remains constant over these timescales. An Fe K-alpha line, characterized by a complex structure, has been detected in the 6-7 keV range. The line, which has an equivalent width of 120 eV, is not compatible with being produced in an absorbing torus with N_H ~ 10^22 cm^-2, but most likely originates by reflection in an accretion disk viewed at an intermediate inclination angle of ~ 42 deg. The reflection component is however small (R < 0.7) and so it is not sufficient to steepen the spectrum to photon index values more typical of AGNs. Instead, we find that the data are more consistent with a flat power law spectrum cut-off at around 100 keV plus a small reflection component which could explain the observed iron line. Thus NGC 526A is the only bona-fide Seyfert 2 galaxy which maintains a "flat spectrum" even when broad band data are considered: in this sense its properties, with respect to the general class of Seyfert 2's, are analogous to those of NGC 4151 with respect to the vast majority of Seyfert 1's., Comment: 8 pages, 6 PostScript figures, Latex manuscript, new A&A file style included, accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics

The bright Narrow Emission Line Galaxy, NGC 5506, has been observed simultaneously by XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX. The iron line is complex, with at least two components: one narrow and corresponding to neutral iron, the second one broad and corresponding to ionized iron. The latter line is equally well fitted by a truly broad line or by a blend of He- and H-like narrow lines. The bulk of the Compton reflection continuum originates in neutral matter, and is therefore associated with the narrow line: they are most likely emitted in distant matter. The origin of the ionized line(s) is less certain, but the solution in terms of a blend of narrow lines from photoionized matter seems to be preferable to emission from an ionized, relativistic accretion disc., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A Letters

We discuss BeppoSAX observations and archive ASCA data of NGC 7679, a nearby, nearly face-on SB0 galaxy in which starburst and AGN activities coexist. The X-ray observations reveal a bright (L_{0.1-50 keV} \sim 2.9 \times 10^{43} erg s^{-1}) and variable source having a minimum observed doubling/halving time scale of \sim 10 - 20 ksec. A simple power law with photon index of \Gamma \sim 1.75 and small absorption (N_H < 4\times 10^{20} cm^{-2}) can reproduce the NGC 7679 spectrum from 0.1 up to 50 keV. These X-ray properties are unambiguous signs of Seyfert 1 activity in the nucleus of NGC 7679. The starburst activity, revealed by the IR emission, optical spectroscopy and H\alpha imaging, and dominating in the optical and IR bands, is clearly overwhelmed by the AGN in the X-ray band. Although, at first glance, this is similar to what is observed in other starburst-AGN galaxies (e.g. NGC 6240, NGC 4945), most strikingly here and at odds with the above examples, the X-ray spectrum of NGC 7679 does not appear to be highly absorbed. The main peculiarity of objects like NGC 7679 is not the strength of their starburst but the apparent optical weakness of the Seyfert 1 nucleus when compared with its X-ray luminosity. To date NGC 7679 is one of the few Seyfert 1/ Starburst composites for which the broad-band X-ray properties have been investigated in detail. The results presented here imply that optical and infrared spectroscopy could be highly inefficient in revealing the presence of an AGN in these kinds of objects, which instead is clearly revealed from X-ray spectroscopic and variability investigations., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Latex manuscript, Accepted for publication in the Astronomy and Astrophysics - Main Journal

Inverse Compton (IC) scattering of nuclear photons with relativistic electrons in the lobes of powerful radio galaxies and quasars can give detectable extended X-ray emission from the radio lobes if relativistic electrons with a Lorentz factor gamma about 300 are present (Brunetti, Setti, Comastri 1997). In general these electrons are not detected since they emit synchrotron radiation at frequencies below the radio band, so that the study of this effect provides a unique tool to measure the energy distribution of the electron population in the radio lobes at gamma lower than 1000. In this paper we reanalyze the Chandra observation of the powerful and compact radio galaxy 3C 295 for which the IC scattering of nuclear photons is expected to be an important mechanism. We find strong evidence for extended and asymmetrical X-ray emission associated with the radio lobes in the energy band 0.1--2 keV. We show that both the luminosity and morphology of the extended X-ray emission associated with the radio lobes, not compatible with other X-ray mechanisms, can be best interpreted by the IC scattering with nuclear photons. We also show that the relativistic electron energy distribution obtained from the synchrotron radio emission can be extrapolated down to gamma about 100 thus providing a first direct evidence on the electron spectrum in the lobes down to lower energies., Comment: corrected author addresses and type error in Eq.3

The Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 7172 was observed twice by BeppoSAX narrow field instruments approximately one year apart. As found in previous observations, the source is variable on short time scales (hours) by a factor of $\sim$30%, confirming the presence of a type 1 nucleus at the center. A strong flux variability (by a factor of 2) on a longer time scale was observed between the two observations. Indeed, in November 1997, the lowest flux ever recorded was detected by BeppoSAX. The broad band spectra obtained with the BeppoSAX narrow field instruments show marginal evidence of a reflection component. This structure could explain the very flat spectra previously observed in the 2-10 keV band. An FeK$\alpha$ line was also detected in both observations. The line intensity appears to remain almost constant between the two observations even if the associated large errors cannot exclude some variability. In order to understand the problem of the origin of the line, data from previous observations, performed with other satellites, were also used. The scenario favored is one where the line is produced at a distance of approximatively 8 light years from the continuum source region, rather than having its origin in the accretion disk. In the framework of the standard unified models for AGN, this suggests that its origin is located in the molecular torus., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication on A&A

The high XMM-Newton throughput allows a detailed investigation of the spatial, spectral and variability properties of the extended and point source emission of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 simultaneously. We characterize the brightest sources by their hardness ratios, detect a bright X-ray transient, and show the spectrum and light curve of the brightest point source, most likely a black-hole X-ray binary. The unresolved emission of two disk regions can be modeled by two thin thermal plasma components of 0.13 and 0.4 keV plus residual harder emission, with the lower temperature component originating from above the disk, the nuclear spectrum by a three temperature plasma (~0.6, 0.9, and 6 keV) with the higher temperatures increasingly absorbed. The high temperature component most likely originates from the starburst nucleus. No non-thermal component, that would point at a significant contribution from an active nucleus (AGN), is needed. Assuming that type IIa supernova remnants (SNRs) are mostly responsible for the E>4 keV emission, the detection with EPIC of the 6.7 keV line allows us to estimate a supernova rate within the nuclear starburst of 0.2 yr^-1. RGS spectra and EPIC images reveal that the limb-brightening of the plume is mostly seen in higher ionization emission lines, while in the lower ionization lines, and below 0.5 keV, the plume is more homogeneously structured. We present results from a Chandra X-ray Observatory study of the field X-ray source populations in 4 different observations: two high-redshift (z~0.5) clusters of galaxies 3C295 and RXJ003033.2+261819; and two non-cluster fields with similar exposure time. Surprisingly, the 0.5-2 keV source surface densities (~900-1200 sources deg**-2 at a flux limit of 1.5x10**-15 erg cm**-2s**-1) measured in an ~8'x8' area surrounding each cluster exceed by a factor of ~2 the value expected on the basis of the ROSAT and Chandra logN-logS, with a significance of ~2 sigma each, or ~3.5 sigma when the 2 fields are combined (i.e. a probability to be a statistical fluctuation of <1% and <0.04%, respectively). The same analysis performed on the non-cluster fields and on the outer chips of the cluster fields does NOT show evidence of such an excess. In both cluster fields, the summed 0.5-10 keV spectrum of the detected objects is well fitted by a power-law with Gamma~1.7 similar to AGNs and shows no sign of intrinsic absorption. The few (~10 out of 35) optical identifications available to date confirm that most of them are, as expected, AGNs but the number of redshifts available is too small to allow conclusions on their nature. We discuss possible interpretations of the overdensity in terms of: a statistical variation of Cosmic Background sources; a concentration of AGNs and/or powerful starburst galaxies associated with the clusters; and g ravitational lensing of background QSO's by the galaxy clusters. All explanations are however difficult to reconcile with the large number of excess sources detected. IC 4329A is the brightest known Seyfert galaxy in hard (~2-30 keV) X-rays and is likely to be representative of Seyfert 1 galaxies as a class. A recent 100 ks BeppoSAX observation (Perola et al. 1999) clearly confirmed the presence of a warm absorber, a reflection component (R~0.6), and a high-energy cut-off in the power law at Ec~270 keV. Its richness in spectral features, combined with its large flux (~1.6 x 10**-10 erg/cm2s between 2-10 keV), make this target ideal for multiple observations (in particular with BeppoSAX) to search for spectral variations. Results obtained from 3 follow-up observations (40 ks each) are presented here. The first and most important goal of this study was to probe the origin of the Compton reflection component observed in Seyfert galaxies by monitoring the variability of the reflection continuum and FeK line in response to primary continuum variations. The second goal was to search for variability in the high energy cutoff. We obtain however no conclusive results on any of these issues. In fact, all four observations unfortunately caught the source at almost the same flux, showing only little, and marginal, spectral changes between different observations., Comment: 2 pages, LateX. We report optical spectroscopic identifications of 10 hard (2-10 keV) X-ray selected sources discovered by Chandra. The X-ray flux of the sources ranges between 1.5 and 25 x 10-14 cgs, the lower value being 3 times fainter than in previous BeppoSAX and ASCA surveys. Their R band magnitudes are in the range 12.8-22. Six of the Chandra sources are broad line quasars with redshifts between 0.42 and 1.19, while the optical identification of the remaining four is quite varied: two are X-ray obscured, emission line AGN at z=0.272 and z=0.683, one is a starburst galaxy at z=0.016 and one, most unusually, is an apparently normal galaxy at z=0.158. These findings confirm and extend down to fainter X-ray fluxes the BeppoSAX results, in providing samples with a wide range of X-ray and optical properties. The ratio between the soft X-ray and the optical luminosity of the z=0.158 galaxy is a factor at least 30 higher than that of normal galaxies, and similar to those of AGN. The high X-ray luminosity and the lack of optical emission lines suggest an AGN in which either continuum beaming dominates, or emission lines are obscured or not efficiently produced., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, accepted by New Astronomy

XEUS is under study by ESA as part of the Horizon 2000+ program to utilize the International Space Station (ISS) for astronomical applications. XEUS will be a long-term X-ray observatory with an initial mirror area of 6m2 at 1 keV that will be grown to 30m2 following a visit to the ISS. The 1 keV spatial resolution is expected to be 2-5'' HEW. XEUS will consist of separate detector and mirror spacecraft aligned by active control to provide a focal length of 50m. A new detector spacecraft, complete with the next generation of instruments, will also be added after visiting the ISS. The limiting sensitivity will then be ~4 10-18 erg/cm2/s - around 250 times better than XMM, allowing XEUS to study the properties of the hot baryons and dark matter at high redshift., Comment: 8 pages. The LINER nucleus of the nearby spiral galaxy M81 was pointed by BeppoSAX, which caught it at the highest (2-10) keV flux level observed so far. The LECS, MECS and PDS data, extending over (0.1-100) keV, are used to investigate the physical similarities and differences between LINERs and AGNs. The continuum is well fitted by a power law of photon index \sim 1.84, modified by little absorption due to cold material. Superimposed on the continuum BeppoSAX detects a 6.7 keV emission line (confirming an ASCA result) and an absorption edge at 8.6 keV. Both spectral features are consistent with being produced by iron at the same high ionization level, and probably also with the same column density. So, we suggest that they originate from transmission through highly ionized thin material. Concerning the origin of the continuum emission, we do not observe signs of reflection from the optically thick material of an accretion disk, as usually found in Seyfert 1's (a 6.4 keV emission line and a broad bump peaking at 10-20 keV). The low bolometric luminosity of the nucleus of M81 is consistent with being produced by advection dominated accretion; in this case the X-ray emission should be dominated by Comptonization, rather than by bremsstrahlung, in order to reproduce the steep spectrum observed over the (0.1-100) keV band., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures included in the text. BeppoSAX observations of the nearby archetypical starburst galaxies NGC253 and M82 are presented. Spectral analysis shows that the 2-10 keV spectra of both galaxies, extracted from the central 4' regions, are best fitted by a thermal emission model with kT~6-9 keV and metal abundances ~ 0.1-0.3 solar. The spatial analysis yields clear evidence that this emission is extended in NGC 253, and possibly also in M82. These results clearly rule out a LLAGN as the {\it main} origin of the X-ray emission in NGC 253. For M82, the presence of an Fe-K line at ~ 6.7 keV, and the convex profile of its 2-10 keV continuum, indicate a significant thermal component. Contributions from point sources (e.g. X-ray binaries, supernova remnants, and/or a LLAGN) and Compton emission are also likely. Altogether, BeppoSAX results provide compelling evidence for the existence of a hot interstellar plasma in both galaxies, possibly in the form of superwind outflows from the disks of these galaxies. Order-of-magnitude estimates and some implications, such as the expelled mass and the energetics of the outflowing gas of this superwind scenario, are discussed. These new results also suggest some similarity between the X-ray emission from these galaxies and that from the Galactic Ridge., Comment: 17 Latex pages, 7 figures, uses psfig.sty. The broad band 0.1-200 keV spectra of a sample of 5 Seyfert 2 galaxies (NGC 7172, Mkn 3, NGC 2110, NGC 4507 and NGC 7674) have been measured within the first year of the $BeppoSAX$ Core program. All sources have been detected up to \~ 100 keV and their spectral characteristics derived with good accuracy. Although the results obtained from the detailed analysis of individual sources indicate some ``source-by-source'' differences, we show in the following that all spectra are consistent, at least qualitatively, with what expected from a ``0th-order'' version of unified models. Indeed, a simple test on these data indicates that these Seyfert 2 galaxies are on average intrinsically very similar to Seyfert 1 galaxies (i.e., steep at E>10 keV) and that the main difference can be ascribed to a different amount of absorbing matter along the line of sight (i.e. different inclinations of our line of sight with respect to a putative molecular torus or different thicknesses of the tori)., Comment: 4 Latex pages, 6 figures, uses psfig.sty. Scanning and pointed RXTE observations of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 6300 reveal that it is a source of hard X-ray continuum and large equivalent width Fe K$\alpha$ emission. These properties are characteristic of Compton-reflection dominated Seyfert 2 galaxies. The continuum can be modeled as Compton-reflection; subsolar iron abundance is required and a high inclination preferred. However, the poor energy resolution of RXTE means that this description is not unique, and the continuum can also be modeled using a ``dual absorber'', i.e. a sum of absorbed power laws. Observations with higher energy resolution detectors will cleanly discriminate between these two models. Optical observations support the Compton-reflection dominated interpretation as $L_X/L_{[OIII]}$ is low. NGC 6300 is notable because with $F_{2-10}\approx 6.4 \times 10^{-12} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1}$, it is the second brightest such object known., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ (Sept. 1 1999, Vol. 522 #1)

A new BeppoSAX broad-band (0.6-150 keV) spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mkn 3 is presented. The spectrum provides a direct measurement of a large, neutral column of gas with Nh~10**24 cm**-2 in the source direction. The source, as bright as 3C 273 above 10 keV, has a steep (Gamma~1.8) spectrum without any evidence of a high-energy cutoff up to at least 150 keV. At lower energies, the data are best modeled with the addition of an unabsorbed reflection component. Combining these data with previous Ginga and ASCA observations, the Fe K$_{\alpha}$ and reflection continuum indicate that the reprocessed emission is responding slower than the intrinsic continuum variations suggesting a size of the reprocessor >= 2 pc. Identifying such a reprocessor with a (close to edge-on) obscuring torus, the overall result fits well into unified models since, presumably, one can interpret the strong absorption as due to transmission through the rim of the torus and the unabsorbed (directly viewed) reflection component as due to reprocessing from the torus inner surface., Comment: 12 LateX pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

New BeppoSAX observations of the nearby prototypical starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M82 are presented. A companion paper (Cappi et al. 1998;astro-ph/9809325) shows that the hard (2-10 keV) spectrum of both galaxies, extracted from the source central regions, is best described by a thermal emission model with kT ~ 6-9 keV and abundances ~ 0.1-0.3 solar. The spatial analysis yields clear evidence that this emission is extended in NGC 253, and possibly also in M82. This quite clearly rules out a LLAGN as the main responsible for their hard X-ray emission. Significant contribution from point-sources (i.e. X-ray binaries (XRBs) and Supernovae Remnants (SNRs)) cannot be excluded; neither can we at present reliably estimate the level of Compton emission. We report on BeppoSAX broad band (0.1-100 keV) observations of bright Seyfert 2 galaxies and discuss the results in the framework of the unified theory of AGNs. The data are used to probe Nh distribution in type 2 objects and to identify heavily absorbed (10^24 <= Nh <= 10^25 cm^-2) sources, which are particularly bright in hard X-rays. They also provide, for the first time, high energy spectral data on Seyfert 2s and tight constraints on the shape of their intrinsic power law continuum. The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 has been observed with BeppoSAX between 0.5 and 150 keV. The high energy instrument onboard, PDS, has succeeded in measuring for the first time the spectrum of this source in the 13-150 keV range. The PDS spectrum, having a photon index Gamma~1.86 is fully compatible with that expected from a Seyfert 1 nucleus. In the framework of unified models, the harder (Gamma~1.67) 2-10 keV spectrum is well explained assuming the presence of a complex partial + total absorber (Nh~30x10^22 cm^-2 x25% + Nh~4x10^22 cm^-2 x100%). The high column density of this complex absorber is consistent both with the FeK_alpha line strength and with the detection of an absorption edge at E~7.1 keV in the power-law spectrum., Comment: A&A Letters accepted, 5 pages

This paper reports the X-ray spectral analysis of 5 high-redshift (z \ge 2) radio-quiet quasars observed by ASCA. A simple power law continuum plus cold Galactic absorption model well fits all the spectra (tipically between $\sim$ 2-30 keV in the sources frame). Neither the X-ray spectral hardening, attributed to a reflection component and observed in Seyfert galaxies, nor the excess absorption previously detected in high-redshift radio-loud quasars, have been revealed. Only a marginal evidence of a neutral or mildly ionized FeK\alpha line is found in one of the quasars. The average spectral slope in the observed 0.7--10 keV energy range, $<\Gamma> = 1.67 \pm{0.11}$ (dispersion $\sigma \sim 0.07$), appears to be flatter than that of low-z radio-quiet quasars ($\Gamma \simeq 1.9-2$) and slightly steeper, but consistent with $\Gamma$ = 1.61 \pm{0.04} (\sigma \sim 0.10)$ of high-z radio-loud quasars., Comment: 9 pages, emulateapj style, plus 16 figures. We report broad band (0.1-200 keV) X-ray observations, made by BeppoSAX, of a sample of bright Seyfert 2 galaxies: NGC7172, NGC2110, NGC4507, Mkn 3 and NGC7674. These spectra provide a better understanding of the effects of X-ray reprocessing by cold material in the source and allow to put tighter constraints on the various spectral parameters involved. In particular, the data are used to determine, with less ambiguities than in the past, the shape of the intrinsic continuum emission by means of the high energy data. New BeppoSAX observations of the nearby archetypical starburst galaxies (SBGs) NGC253 and M82 are presented. The main observational result is the unambiguous evidence that the hard (2-10 keV) component is (mostly) produced in both galaxies by thermal emission from a metal-poor (~ 0.1-0.3 solar), hot (kT \~ 6- 9 keV) and extended (see companion paper: Cappi et al. 1998) plasma. Possible origins of this newly discovered component are briefly discussed. We present BeppoSAX results on the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253. Although extended, a large fraction of the X-ray emission comes from the nuclear region. Preliminary analysis of the LECS/MECS/PDS ~0.2-60 keV data from the central 4' region indicates that the continuum is well fitted by two thermal models: a ``soft'' component with kT ~ 0.9 keV, and a ``hard'' component with kT ~ 6 keV absorbed by a column density of ~ 1.2 x10**22 cm-2. For the first time in this object, the Fe K line at 6.7 keV is detected, with an equivalent width of ~ 300 eV. This detection, together with the shape of the 2--60 keV continuum, implies that most of the hard X-ray emission is thermal in origin, and constrains the iron abundances of this component to be ~0.25 of solar. Other lines clearly detected are Si, S and Fe L/Ne, in agreement with previous ASCA results. ASCA observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7582 revealed it was highly variable on the timescale of $\sim2\times10^4$ s in the hard X-ray (2-10 keV) band, while the soft X-ray (0.5-2 keV) flux remained constant during the observations. The spectral analysis suggests that this object is seen through an obscuring torus with the thickness of N$_{\rm H}\sim1.0\times 10^{23}\rm cm^{-2}$. The hard X-ray is an absorbed direct continuum from a hidden Seyfert 1 nucleus; the soft X-ray is dominated by the scattered central continuum from an extended spatial region. Thus we have an obscured/absorbed and a scattered view of this source as expected from the unification model for Seyfert galaxies. More interestingly, the inferred X-ray column was observed to increase by $\sim4\times10^{22} \rm cm^{-2}$ from 1994 to 1996, suggesting a ``patchy'' torus structure, namely the torus might be composed of many individual clouds. The observed iron line feature near 6.4 keV with the equivalent width of 170 eV is also consistent with the picture of the transmission of nuclear X-ray continuum through a non-uniform torus., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Here we report the X-ray spectral analysis of 5 high-redshift ($z \geq 2$) radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) observed with the ASCA satellite. A simple power law with Galactic absorption model well fits the data. There is no evidence of a reflection component. Steep soft X-ray (0.1-2 keV) quasars share several unusual properties: narrow Balmer lines, strong FeII emission, large and fast X-ray variability, rather steep 2-10 keV spectrum. These intriguing objects have been suggested to be the analogs of Galactic black hole candidates in the high, soft state. We present here results from ASCA observations for two of these quasars: NAB0205+024 and PG1244+026. Both objects show similar variations (factor of about 2 in 10 ks), despite a factor of about ten difference in the 0.5-10 keV luminosity (7.3E43 erg/s for PG1244+026 and 6.4E44 erg/s for NAB0205+024, assuming isotropic emission, H_0 = 50.0 and q_0 = 0.0). The X-ray continuum of the two quasars flattens by 0.5-1 going from the 0.1-2 keV band toward higher energies, strengthening recent results on another half dozen steep soft X-ray AGN. PG1244+026 shows a significant feature in the `1 keV' region, which can be described by either as a broad emission line centered at 0.95 keV (quasar frame) or as edge or line absorption at 1.17 (1.22) keV. The line emission could be due to reflection from an highly ionized accretion disk, in line with the view that steep soft X-ray quasars are emitting close to the Eddington luminosity. Photoelectric edge absorption or resonant line absorption could be produced by gas outflowing at a large velocity (0.3-0.6 c)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 10 pages

shortened) Results obtained from 9 X-ray observations of 3C 273 performed by ASCA are presented (for a total exposure time of about 160 000 s). The analysis and interpretation of the results is complicated by the fact that 4 of these observations were used for on-board calibration of the CCDs spectral response. The present analysis shows that, in agreement with official recommendations, a conservative systematic error (at low energies) of about 2-3 x 10**20cm-2 must be assumed when analyzing ASCA SIS data. A soft-excess, with variable flux and/or shape, has been clearly detected as well as flux and spectral variability. An anti-correlation is found between the spectral index and the flux in the 2-10 keV energy range. Fitting the data with the latest available calibration matrices, we also detect an emission line at ~5.4-5.7 keV (~6.3-6.6 keV in the quasar frame) in (only) the two observations with lowest fluxes where it is weak (EW ~ 20-30 eV), narrow and consistent with being produced by Fe K emission from neutral matter. Overall, the observations are qualitatively consistent with a variable, non-thermal X-ray continuum emission, i.e., a power law with Gamma~1.6 (possibly produced in the innermost regions of the radio-optical jet), plus underlying ``Seyfert-like'' features, i.e., a soft-excess and Fe K line emission due to a reflection component. Preliminary results obtained from BeppoSAX observation of the starburst galaxy NGC253 are presented. X-ray emission from the object is clearly extended but most of the emission is concentrated on the optical nucleus. Preliminary analysis of the LECS and MECS data obtained using the central 4' region indicates that the continuum is well fitted by two thermal components at 0.9 keV and 7 keV. Fe K line at 6.7 keV is detected for the first time in this galaxy; the line has an equivalent width of ~300eV. We report on the BeppoSAX observations of the gamma-ray blazar PKS 0528+134 performed in Feb and Mar 1997, during a multiwavelength campaign involving EGRET and ground based telescopes. The source was in a faint and hard state, with energy spectral index alpha=0.48+-0.04 between 0.1 and 10 keV, and [2-10] keV flux of 2.7E-12 erg/cm2/s. No significant variability was observed. The source was detected in the 20-120 keV band by the PDS, with a flux lying slightly above the extrapolation from lower X-ray energies. Comparing this low state with previous higher states of the source, there is an indication that the X-ray spectrum hardens and the gamma-ray spectrum steepens when the source is fainter., Comment: 4 pages, LateX, 5 figures (included). ASCA X-ray spectral analysis of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 04575-7537 is presented. The main result is the presence of a significant iron edge at a rest energy of 7.13^+0.21_-0.16 keV. The spectrum is flat (Gamma = 1.5) with a substantial absorption Nh = 10^22 cm^-2 and does not require any reflection component. There is also evidence of a narrow Fe Kalpha emission line, whose rest energy (E = 6.35^+0.08_ -0.03 keV) and equivalent width (EW = 130+-50 eV) suggest that the line originates from thick and cold matter. The intensity of the line and, in particular, the depth of the iron edge are too strong to be explained by simple transmission through the measured absorption column density. This strongly suggests that a model more complex than a single absorbed power law is needed. We propose an absorption model that we call "leaky-total absorber" which can explain the spectrum flatness, the iron emission line and the edge absorption feature and has also the advantage of having a straightforward physical interpretation in the framework of Unified models. In this model a thick absorber (Nh = 10^23 cm^-2), possibly associated with broad line region (BLR) clouds, partially (36 %) covers the source continuum with Gamma fixed to 1.9 as observed in Sey 1 galaxies. The escaping radiation is then absorbed by a column density Nh = 10^22 cm^-2, which can be attributed to the torus, seen through its rim., Comment: 7 pages, 4 ps figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics main journal

The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7674 has been observed within the BeppoSAX Core Programme with the onboard narrow field instruments between 0.1 and 100 keV. The broad-band spectrum shows four most relevant spectral components: a) a soft excess below ~2 keV; b) a prominent (EW~1 keV) Fe line; c) a flat (Gamma~1.1) 2-10 keV continuum; d) a 4.5sigma detection above 13 keV. The flat power law spectrum can be very well explained within the current AGN unified models assuming a steep (Gamma~2) intrinsic spectrum scattered by warm gas for the low energy band and totally reflected by optically thick cold matter (plausibly a molecular torus) for the high energy band. The case of NGC 7674 adds to the increasing number of so called "Compton-thick" Seyfert 2 galaxies in which the direct emission is totally absorbed and the X-ray luminosity is thus at least one or two orders of magnitude larger than what inferred from the observed flux., Comment: 6 pages, LaTeX, 2 PostScript figures included, uses A&A macros, accepted for publication in A&A

We present results of the ASCA observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4507. The 0.5-10 keV spectrum is rather complex and consists of several components: (1) a hard X-ray power law heavily absorbed by a column density of about 3 10^23 cm^-2, (2) a narrow Fe Kalpha line at 6.4 keV, (3) soft continuum emission well above the extrapolation of the absorbed hard power law, (4) a narrow emission line at about 0.9 keV. The line energy, consistent with highly ionized Neon (NeIX), may indicate that the soft X-ray emission derives from a combination of resonant scattering and fluorescence in a photoionized gas. Some contribution to the soft X-ray spectrum from thermal emission, as a blend of Fe L lines, by a starburst component in the host galaxy cannot be ruled out with the present data., Comment: 8 pages, LateX, 5 figures (included). We report the results of a 3C273 observation performed during the Science Verification Phase (SVP) of the BeppoSax satellite. The broad-band spectrum is well represented by a power-law between 1 keV and 200 keV. The spectral slope is flat (\Gamma ~1.6) with a weak emission line at ~ 6.4 keV (rest frame) of EW ~ 30 eV. Below 1 keV, a deviation from a power-law due to an absorption feature plus a soft component is present. This is the first time that a feature in absorption at ~ 0.5 keV (observer frame) is unambiguously detected in 3C273., Comment: 4 pages. Accepted for publication in A&A (Letters)

The results of the 0.1-10 keV spectral analysis of IC 5063 (Narrow Line Radio Galaxy) and NGC 3998 (LINER) are presented. In both cases there is evidence of a FeK$\alpha$ emission line, but its width is poorly constrained. The highly absorbed spectrum of IC 5063 is well described by a double power law model. The X-ray luminosity of a few $\times$ 10$^{43}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ reveals a Sey 1 nucleus seen nearly edge-on, as confirmed by optical and IR studies. NGC 3998 is well fitted by a power law model ($\Gamma$$\sim$1.9) without reflection and weak absorption. Results of an ASCA X-ray observation of NGC 4507 are presented. The spectrum is best parameterized by a double power law (or a partial covering) model plus a narrow FeK$\alpha$ emission line likely due to the line-of-sight absorption matter. The data require also an emission line at $\sim$ 0.9 keV consistent with NeIX, which may indicate that the soft X-ray emission derives from a combination of resonant scattering and fluorescence of the radiation by photoionized gas. Moreover, complex absorption (or other, unresolved, emission lines) is required by the data below 3 keV. Results are presented on the X-ray properties of 9 high-redshift (1.2 < z < 3.4) radio-loud quasars (RLQs) observed by ASCA (10 observations) and ROSAT (11 observations, for a subset of 6 quasars). New ASCA observations of S5 0014+81 (z = 3.38) and S5 0836+71 (z = 2.17) and ROSAT observations of PKS 2126-158 for which results were never presented elsewhere, are included. A simple model consisting of a power law plus cold, uniform absorption gives acceptable fits to the spectra of all sources. The ASCA spectra of the 6 brightest objects show evidence for absorption in excess of the Galactic value at a << 99% confidence level. Comparison with the ROSAT data suggests that absorption has significantly varied ($\Delta N_{H} \sim 8$ $\times$ 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$) in the case of S5 0836+71, on a time-scale of $\sim$ 0.8 yr in the quasar frame. For the remaining 5 sources for which ROSAT spectra were available, the two instruments gave consistent results and the data were combined yielding unprecedent spectral coverage (typically $\sim$ 0.4-40 keV in the quasar frame) for high-z quasars. This allows to put severe limits on several different descriptions of the continuum (e.g. broken power law, bremsstrahlung, reflection component). No Fe K$\alpha$ emission line is detected in any of the ASCA spectra. An absorption edge consistent with Fe K$\alpha$ at the quasar redshift is marginally detected in S5 0014+81. Possible origins for the observed low energy absorption are discussed. In particular, contributions from the molecular clouds and dust present in our Galaxy (usually disregarded) are carefully considered. In the light of the new results for S5 0836+71 and S5 0014+81, absorption intrinsic to the quasars is considered and discussed. We present the results of an ASCA observation of the high redshift flat spectrum radio quasar S5 0836+710. The $\sim 0.4-10$ keV X-ray spectrum is remarkably flat with $\Gamma \sim 1.4$ and substantial intrinsic absorption at low energy. The spectral slope was found to be in good agreement with the non--simultaneous ROSAT PSPC observations while no evidence of intrinsic absorption has been found in the PSPC spectrum. Our results suggest time variability of the absorbing material on timescales less than five months in the source rest--frame., Comment: 2 pages, including 1 Postscript figure. Results from the X-ray spectral analysis of the ASCA PV phase observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy IC 4329A are presented. We find that the 0.4 - 10 keV spectrum of IC 4329A is best described by the sum of a steep ($\Gamma \sim 1.98$) power-law spectrum passing through a warm absorber plus a strong reflection component and associated Fe K line, confirming recent results (Madejski et al. 1995, Mushotsky et al. 1995). Further cold absorption in excess of the Galactic value and covering the entire source is also required by the data, consistent with the edge-on galactic disk and previous X-ray measurements. The effect of the warm absorber at soft X-ray energies is best parameterized by two absorption edges, one consistent with OVI, OVII or NVII, the other consistent with OVIII. A description of the soft excess in terms of blackbody emission, as observed in some other Seyfert 1 galaxies, is ruled out by the data. A large amount of reflection is detected in both the GIS and SIS detectors, at similar intensities. We find a strong correlation between the amount of reflection and the photon index, but argue that the best solution with the present data is that given by the best statistical fit. The model dependence of the Fe K line parameters is also discussed. Our best fit gives a slightly broad ($\sigma \simeq 0.11 \pm 0.08$ keV) and redshifted (E $\simeq 6.20 \pm 0.07$ keV) Fe K line, with equivalent width $\simeq$ 89 $\pm$ 33 eV. The presence of a weak Fe K line with a strong reflection can be reconciled if one assumes iron underabundances or ionized reflection. We also have modeled the line with a theoretical line profile produced by an accretion disk. The first X-ray observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC5252 is reported. ASCA collected $\sim 4000$ photons/detector enough to perform an accurate spectral analysis of this source. The luminosity of NGC5252 is L$_{\rm X}$(0.7-10 keV) $\simeq 2.6 \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, typical of a Seyfert 1 galaxy. A simple description of the spectrum with a single power law is ruled out by the SIS data which shows a strong soft excess at E $\lsimeq$ 1.2 keV. The spectrum is best fitted by models assuming either partial covering of the central source or scattering of the X-ray continuum. The best-fit partial covering model results in a flat ($\Gamma \simeq 1.45 \pm 0.2$) power law continuum emitted by a source almost completely covered (at $\sim$ 94-97\%) by neutral matter ($N_{\rm H} \simeq (4.3 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$). The detected iron line is remarkably weaker (EW $\sim 90 \pm 60$ eV) than normally found from Seyfert 2 galaxies. In an effort to interpret the observed flat spectrum with an intrinsically steep power law as predicted by unified models, we also included in the models neutral reflection, ionized absorption (warm absorber), and non-uniform cold absorption (dual-absorber). We find that the observed flat continum {\bf and} weakness of the iron line poses a problem for neutral reflection models, whatever the assumed geometry is. The use of an ionized absorber (scattering + warm-absorber model) instead of a neutral absorber seems not justified with the present data. The ``dual-absorber'' model, representing nonuniform (density) absorption along the line of sight, may provide an alternative explanation for the flatness of the spectrum, with no constraints on the Fe K emission line. Another plausible interpretation of the present data is that the X-ray spectrum of NGC5252 is truly intrinsically flat. ASCA observations of 4 high redshift radio--loud quasars with 1.44$<$z$<$3.21 are presented. The spectral analysis for three of them (PKS 0332-403, PKS 0537-286, PKS 2149-306) reveals that their X-ray continuum emission is well represented by a simple power--law model plus absorption with photon indices of $\Gamma =1.92^{+0.30}_{-0.20}$ (PKS 0332-403), $\Gamma =1.63^{+0.14}_{-0.12}$ (PKS 0537-286) and $\Gamma =1.57\pm 0.05$ (PKS 2149-306). The fourth and most distant object, PKS 1614+051 at z=3.21, was detected, but a detailed spectral analysis is impossible due to the small number of photons. We find evidence for excess absorption above the Galactic $N_H$--value in the ASCA data of PKS 2149-306, which is not confirmed by the ROSAT All-Sky Survey PSPC spectrum of this source. This could probably be due to variable absorption. The ROSAT spectrum of PKS 0537-286, deduced from a 10 ksec pointed PSPC observation, is consistent with the ASCA results. Thermal bremsstrahlung models also give acceptable fits to the ASCA data with best fit (rest frame) temperatures of 10.4, 33.5 and 45.8 keV for PKS 0332-403, PKS 0537-286 and PKS 2149-306, respectively. More complicated models for the X-ray continuum are not required, in particular, tight upper limits on the strength of the Fe-K emission line are given.
