Abstract

Lie [104] introduced the geometry of oriented spheres in his dissertation, published as a paper in Mathematische Annalen in 1872. Sphere geometry was also prominent in his study of contact transformations (Lie-Scheffers [105]) and in Volume III of Blaschke's book on differential geometry published in 1929. In recent years, Lie sphere geometry has become a valuable tool in the study of Dupin submanifolds, beginning with Pinkall's [146] dissertation in 1981. Abstract

Increasing the operating frequency of SIS receivers requires a shift from Nb/Al A1Ox /Nb junctions to new material systems. Two major limiting factors of higher frequency operation are the increase in subgap leakage that occurs in A1Ox barriers as current densities approach and exceed 10 kA/cm2 and the increased loss in Nb electrodes above ∼700 GHz. A promising alternative structure is the hybrid Nb/Al-AIN/NbTiN junction. Realization of these devices has been difficult due to the challenge of fabricating devices with repeatable current densities and electrical characteristics. We present on the fabrication and dc testing of Nb/AIN/NbTiN junctions. The AIN barrier is formed using our inductively coupled plasma (ICP) technique which allows for independent control of both ion energy and current density. This improved control enables the repeatable synthesis of high quality and high Jc barriers. Nb and NbTiN electrodes are deposited by unbalanced dc magnetron. A new fabrication process was developed to enable fabrication of junctions with area as small as 0.28 μm2. The relationship between barrier thickness and plasma conditions is determined by in-situ discrete ellipsometry. Ellipsometry results were verified by comparison with measured current-voltage characteristics. 1(V) curves for a range of junction sizes are presented. Plans for in-situ Faraday monitoring of the energy and current density of the ICP nitridation plasma will also be discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have fabricated high quality M1/barrier/M2/Au superconducting insulating superconducting (SIS) junctions with Au over-layers using a new multilayer pentalevel resist process. The wafer/NFR/polyimide/SiO2/Cr/imaging resist pentalevel structure enables precise definition of submicron junction features in a self-aligned insulation process. This scheme, unlike our previous multilevel resists, affords precise definition of the final Nb layer from an initial etch of a thinner top Cr layer. The Cr layer, defined with chlorine based RIE, serves as an excellent mask for the subsequent fluorine and oxygen based RIE etches of the remaining pentalevel stack and M2 electrode. We present a detailed description of the pentalevel process and electrical characteristics of NbTiN SIS junctions fabricated with this new technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have implanted 30 keV gallium ions into niobium films 100 Å thick using a focused-ion beam (FIB). The nature of the FIB tool allows the irradiation of a specific, controllable, area of the substrate, from hundreds of square microns down to an arbitrary, user-defined pattern defined by a 70 Å stencil. A sacrificial layer of gold covering the niobium controls the range of the incident gallium ions and prevents the niobium film from sputtering away under bombardment. This article examines the behavior of these films phenomenologically, including information about the changes in transition temperature and resistance of the implanted samples. Also a curious unexplained feature of the resistive transition at implant doses below about 3 x 1019 cm-3 will be presented and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background and Aim: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is an unusual condition with unique behaviour caused by a mucinous neoplasm, usually arising from the appendix. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of genomic alterations in clinical specimens of PMP using a targeted assay and correlate the findings with clinical, pathological and outcome data. Sequencing data from 223 patients were analysed. Results: The median follow‐up interval was 48 months. The primary neoplasm was appendiceal in 216 patients, ovarian in 4, urachal in 2 and renal in one. We confirmed common mutations in GNAS and KRAS (42% each) with significant co‐occurrence of variants in these genes. TP53 mutations were found in 8%. Other mutations were rare but included novel mutations in BAP1 and ERBB4. Of 17 patients with acellular peritoneal mucin, 6 (35%) were positive for DNA mutations. The non‐appendiceal cases generally showed a similar mutational landscape to the appendiceal lesions with GNAS and KRAS commonly mutated, although one urachal lesion showed multi‐hit TP53 mutation without variants in either GNAS or KRAS. Survival was significantly associated with the grade of the primary neoplasm, the grade of the peritoneal disease, the completeness of cytoreduction score and with mutation in either GNAS, KRAS or both. The hazard ratio (HR) associated with mutation in GNAS and/or KRAS was 1.87 (p = 0.004). Conclusions: Survival outcome was more closely associated with the grade of the peritoneal disease than with the grade of the primary neoplasm. Abstract

It is well known in the industry that the technology nodes from 30nm and below will require model based SRAF / OPC for critical layers to meet production required process windows. Since the seminal paper by Saleh and Sayegh[1][2] thirty years ago, the idea of using inverse methods to solve mask layout problems has been receiving increasing attention as design sizes have been steadily shrinking. ILT in its present form represents an attempt to construct the inverse solution to a constrained problem where the constraints are all possible phenomena which can be simulated, including: DOF, sidelobes, MRC, MEEF, EL, shot-count, and other effects. Given current manufacturing constraints and process window requirements, inverse solutions must use all possible degrees of freedom to synthesize a mask. Various forms of inverse solutions differ greatly with respect to lithographic performance and mask complexity. Factors responsible for their differences include composition of the cost function that is minimized, constraints applied during optimization to ensure MRC compliance and limit complexity, and the data structure used to represent mask patterns. In this paper we describe the level set method to represent mask patterns, which allows the necessary degrees of freedom for required lithographic performance, and show how to derive Manhattan mask patterns from it, which can be manufactured with controllable complexity and limited shot-counts. We will demonstrate how full chip ILT masks can control e-beam write-time to the level comparable to traditional OPC masks, providing a solution with maximized lithographic performance and manageable cost of ownership that is vital to sub-30nm node IC manufacturing.

Abstract

POSTOPERATIVE serous labyrinthitis is one of the great problems in fenestration surgery today. To reduce or eliminate postoperative serous labyrinthitis, there must be a calibrated method of measuring its type, degree, and duration. To obtain this goal, we have calibrated the Weber test. By adapting the long-proved Weber test to the bone-conduction oscillator of the audiometer, it has been possible to demonstrate the variations in threshold and, with increasing intensity, variations in lateralization of sound. As presented, the calibrated Weber test may be described as a new hearing test; in actuality, it is only an audiometric adaptation of one of the oldest hearing tests. This test has been of value to us in determining the status and prognosis in our recent cases of fenestration. During the last fifty years a number of explorers and a few trained geologists have contributed to our knowledge of the structure and lithology of the McDonnell Ranges, the inaccessibility of which has, until recently, been the obstacle limiting investigations. There has never yet been a thoroughgoing investigation of the area, and each observation has been in the nature of a brief reconnaissance in connexion with mineral resources or water-supply. All work prior to the year 1925 is mentioned in an excellent summary and discussion contributed by Dr. L. K. Ward. For further information relating to such earlier work the reader is directed to that paper. In his contribution Dr. Ward has combined and clarified the information gathered from these various sources, and he presents in excellent language a clear picture of the geology and physiography of the regions. The account also incorporates his own observations made on several occasions, when visiting the area in connexion with water-supply and mineral occurrences. There is, however, one finding that appears in this very notable contribution which, while being a reasonable inference, could not be regarded as actually proven. This is a very important question: no less than the age of some 14,000 feet of sediments (Ward9s measurement) and in a portion of which, at Acacia Well east of Alice Springs, Dr. C. Chewings had long ago reported the occurrence of cryptozoan fossils. The beds unconformably overlie the crystalline complex of accepted pre-Cambrian age. I. Introduction The literature on the geology of Central Australia is now becoming somewhat voluminous. Owing to the vastness of this largely desert area, the sparseness of settlement, which is almost wholly confined to the neighbourhood of the overland telegraph line, and the cost and difficulty of travel in a land where waters are few and far between and petrol only available if sent out by camel, the geological work has been in the nature of rapid route reconnaissances in scattered directions. Although the chief ore deposits are in the eastern MacDonnell Ranges, very little has been done in that area, while the western ranges, though quite devoid of any mineral wealth, have received a relatively large amount of attention geologically. The reason for this is that on the western side of the telegraph line the geological structures show comparative simplicity, while to the east there has been much more complex movement, the formations occurring in jumbled hills and ranges in such confusion as only closely detailed mapping could unravel. The key to the geology of the whole area lies in the west. I first visited the western MacDonnell Ranges in company with Sir Douglas Mawson in 1927. 169. The Evolution of the Canada Development Corporation

Abstract

This study has been divided into two levels of analysis. The first and most important level is concerned with examining the evolution of the Canada Development Corporation, hereafter referred to as the CDC. The emphasis of the thesis is on the factors which shaped the Corporation's form and functions. These include national and international economic variables, the personalities and political orientations of decision-makers, specific political circumstances and the decision-making process itself. The most significant contribution that this thesis makes to knowledge is that it has developed an elite model for explaining the evolution of the CDC. It is argued that Canada's indigenous economic elite had the greatest input into the policy process which created the CDC. This is considered to be the most important factor which shaped the CDC's evolution. As a result of this elite's influence, the federal government structured the CDC so that its primary functions were buttress and promote elitism and capitalism in Canada. The second level of analysis is of a macroscopic nature. Here the focus has been on four questions. What does the CDC as a case study say about the role the state has played in the development of the Canadian economy since 1960? is the CDC a defensive of offensive policy response to the problems of foreign investment, capital formation and economic growth in Canada? What have been the implications of using an elite model to analyze the Corporation and its evolution? And finally, what does the CDC's evolution say about the study of public policy? In peacetime how does our policy on this question affect military cohesion, the recruiting market, acceptance of draft registration, political support and willingness to spill blood. Investigate what the effect would be during wartime. The role of women in society and the military is changing and this change could affect military power. Military power is a function of the perception of our military capability and our will to use that capability. Military capability may suffer if conflicting values adversely affect unit cohesion. This same conflict would affect the recruiting market and social acceptance of draft registration requirements. Policy concerning the role of women in combat could affect political support of the military and willingness to spill blood. This affects the perception of our will to use our military capability. The paper assumes an All Volunteer Force will continue in peacetime to be supplanted with conscription during wartime. Assigning drafted women in combat could affect military power even more.

Abstract

THE NONFENESTRATING otologists are the supreme court judges of fenestration surgery. The fenestrating otologist knows that most otosclerotic patients with good bone conduction will obtain a gratifying restoration of hearing with the fenestration operation, that with microscopically perfect surgical technique the restored hearing will last in more than 95% of cases, and that the overwhelming majority of patients who have undergone fenestration are grateful patients. There are, however, many problems in which the nonfenestrating otologist has the great responsibility of advising his patient. To answer these problems from the selection of cases to the permanent hearing results is the goal of this presentation. The nonfenestrating otologists will always be in the overwhelming majority because of the relatively low incidence of fenestration surgery. Venus and Jupiter are often used as long wavelength infrared (LWIR) calibration sources. The authors have reviewed the literature on radiometric and spectrometric measurements of these two planets and adopted reasonable brightness temperatures and spectral dependencies for their thermal radiation. Using these data, irradiance coefficients that can be used to determine the irradiance reaching the earth from these planets at any time were calculated. A crucial factor in the utility of these planets as calibration sources is the constancy with which they radiate in the infrared. The authors conclude that Jupiter may be a variable source. Venus, on the other hand, appears to be generally quite constant, but brief temporal variations may take place.
