Abstract

Sugammadex sodium is a modified y-cyclodextrin with a very high affinity for rocuronium and, to a lesser extent, vecuronium molecules. In vivo administration results in immediate encapsulation o f rocuronium and vecuronium, resulting in termination o f neuromuscular blockade, usually within 3 minutes. This new neuromuscular blocking agent is specific for the aminosteroidal neuromuscular blocking agents rocuronium and vecuronium. Experience gained through worldwide clinical use o f sugammadex offers US anesthesia providers the opportunity to better understand this new drug and its clinical applications. The seminal and current literature concerning clinical use o f sugammadex is reviewed, and considerations for its incorporation into practice are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The clinical implications of pharmacogenetics are vast and many more are becoming apparent as research continues. Health-care providers will increasingly need to take pharmacogenetics into consideration when prescribing medications. Each patient's history, physical condition, gender, and ethnicity must be considered when prescribing drugs. Specific genotypic testing of patients for polymorphisms that influence drug metabolism and action will become a clinical reality. Silicone chip technology utilizing single-nucleotide polymorphisms will be able to provide a practitioner with reliable and timely information in an office setting to guide practice.
