153. A Possible Icy Kuiper Belt around HD 181327

Abstract

We have obtained a Gemini South T-ReCS Qa-band (18.3 micron) image and a Spitzer MIPS SED-mode observation of HD181327, an F5/F6V member of the ~12 Myr old beta Pictoris moving group. We resolve the disk in thermal-emission for the first time and find that the northern arm of the disk is 1.4x brighter than the southern arm. In addition, we detect a broad peak in the combined Spitzer IRS and MIPS spectra at 60 - 75 micron that may be produced by emission from crystalline water ice. We model the IRS and MIPS data using a size distribution of amorphous olivine and water ice grains (dn/da proportional to a^{-2.25} with a_{min} consistent with the minimum blow out size and a_{max} = 20 micron) located at a distance of 86.3 AU from the central star, as observed in previously published scattered-light images. Since the photo-desorption lifetime for the icy particles is ~1400 yr, significantly less than the estimated ~12 Myr age of the system, we hypothesize that we have detected debris that may be steadily replenished by collisions among icy Kuiper belt object-like parent bodies in a newly forming planetary system., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures (including 3 color figures), ApJ, in press

Abstract

ImportanceWith growing national focus on reducing readmissions, there is a need to comprehensively assess the quality of transitional care, including discharge practices, patient perspectives, and patient understanding.ObjectiveTo conduct a multifaceted evaluation of transitional care from a patient-centered perspective.DesignProspective observational cohort study, May 2009 through April 2010.SettingUrban, academic medical center.ParticipantsPatients 65 years and older discharged home after hospitalization for acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, or pneumonia.Main outcomes and measuresDischarge practices, including presence of follow-up appointment and patient-friendly discharge instructions; patient understanding of diagnosis and follow-up appointment; and patient perceptions of and satisfaction with discharge care.ResultsThe 395 enrolled patients (66.7% of those eligible) had a mean age of 77.2 years. Although 349 patients (95.6%) reported understanding the reason they had been in the hospital, only 218 patients (59.6%) were able to accurately describe their diagnosis in postdischarge interviews. Discharge instructions routinely included symptoms to watch out for (98.4%), activity instructions (97.3%), and diet advice (89.7%) in lay language; however, 99 written reasons for hospitalization (26.3%) did not use language likely to be intelligible to patients. Of the 123 patients (32.6%) discharged with a scheduled primary care or cardiology appointment, 54 (43.9%) accurately recalled details of either appointment. During postdischarge interviews, 118 patients (30.0%) reported receiving less than 1 day’s advance notice of discharge, and 246 (66.1%) reported that staff asked whether they would have the support they needed at home before discharge.Conclusions and relevancePatient perceptions of discharge care quality and self-rated understanding were high, and written discharge instructions were generally comprehensive although not consistently clear. However, follow-up appointments and advance discharge planning were deficient, and patient understanding of key aspects of postdischarge care was poor. Patient perceptions and written documentation do not adequately reflect patient understanding of discharge care.

Abstract

We report the mid- and far-infrared properties of nearby M dwarfs. Spitzer/MIPS measurements were obtained for a sample of 62 stars at 24 um, with subsamples of 41 and 20 stars observed at 70 um and 160 um respectively. We compare the results with current models of M star photospheres and look for indications of circumstellar dust in the form of significant deviations of K-[24 um] colors and 70 um / 24 um flux ratios from the average M star values. At 24 um, all 62 of the targets were detected; 70 um detections were achieved for 20 targets in the subsample observed; and no detections were seen in the 160 um subsample. No clear far-infrared excesses were detected in our sample. The average far infrared excess relative to the photospheric emission of the M stars is at least four times smaller than the similar average for a sample of solar-type stars. However, this limit allows the average fractional infrared luminosity in the M-star sample to be similar to that for more massive stars. Abstract

Quantum key distribution (QKD) systems can send signals over more than 100 km standard optical fiber and are widely believed to be secure. Here, we show experimentally for the first time a technologically feasible attack, namely the time-shift attack, against a commercial QKD system. Our result shows that, contrary to popular belief, an eavesdropper, Eve, has a non-negligible probability (~4%) to break the security of the system. Eve's success is due to the well-known detection efficiency loophole in the experimental testing of Bell inequalities. Therefore, the detection efficiency loophole plays a key role not only in fundamental physics, but also in technological applications such as QKD., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. 157. Dust and Gas Debris Around Main Sequence Stars

Abstract

Debris disks are dusty, gas-poor disks around main sequence stars (Backman & Paresce 1993; Lagrange, Backman & Artymowicz 2000; Zuckerman 2001). Micron-sized dust grains are inferred to exist in these systems from measurements of their thermal emission at infrared through millimeter wavelengths. The estimated lifetimes for circumstellar dust grains due to sublimation, radiation and corpuscular stellar wind effects are typically significantly smaller than the estimated ages for the stellar systems, suggesting that the grains are replenished from a reservoir, such as sublimation of comets or collisions between parent bodies. Since the color temperature for the excess emission is typically Tgr ~ 110 - 120 K, similar to that expected for small grains in the Kuiper Belt, these objects are believe to be generated by collisions between parent bodies analogous to Kuiper Belt objects in our solar system; however, a handful of systems possess warm dust, with Tgr > 300 K, at temperatures similar to the terrestrial planets. We describe the physical characteristics of debris disks, the processes that remove dust from disks, and the evidence for the presence of planets in debris disks. Abstract

We present a model of a dusty disk with an inner hole which accounts for the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph observations of the low-mass pre-main sequence star CoKu Tau/4. We have modeled the mid-IR spectrum (between 8 and 25 mic) as arising from the inner wall of a disk. Our model disk has an evacuated inner zone of radius ~ 10 AU, with a dusty inner ``wall'', of half-height ~ 2 AU, that is illuminated at normal incidence by the central star. The radiative equilibrium temperature decreases from the inner disk edge outward through the optically-thick disk; this temperature gradient is responsible for the emission of the silicate bands at 10 and 20 mic. The observed spectrum is consistent with being produced by Fe-Mg amorphous glassy olivine and/or pyroxene, with no evidence of a crystalline component. The mid-infrared spectrum of CoKu Tau/4 is reminiscent of that of the much older star TW Hya, where it has been suggested that the significant clearing of its inner disk is due to planet formation. However, no inner disk remains in CoKu Tau/4, consistent with the star being a weak-emission (non-accreting) T Tauri star. Abstract

Cofilin is a member of the actin depolymerizing factor (ADF)/cofilin family of proteins. It plays a key role in actin dynamics by promoting disassembly and assembly of actin filaments. Upon its binding, cofilin has been shown to bridge two adjacent protomers in filamentous actin (F-actin) and promote the displacement and disordering of subdomain 2 of actin. Here, we present evidence for cofilin promoting a new structural change in the actin filament, as detected via a switch in cross-linking sites. Benzophenone-4-maleimide, which normally forms intramolecular cross-linking in F-actin, cross-links F-actin intermolecularly upon cofilin binding. We mapped the cross-linking sites and found that in the absence of cofilin intramolecular cross-linking occurred between residues Cys374 and Asp11. In contrast, cofilin shifts the cross-linking by this reagent to intermolecular, between residue Cys374, located within subdomain 1 of the upper protomer, and Met44, located in subdomain 2 of the lower protomer. The intermolecular cross-linking of F-actin slows the rate of cofilin dissociation from the filaments and decreases the effect of ionic strength on cofilin-actin binding. These results are consistent with a significant role of filament flexibility in cofilin-actin interactions.

Abstract

Background. Hospitalised older patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have an increased risk of poor health outcomes. We aimed to determine the associations of length of stay (LOS) with frailty status and disease severity among older patients admitted to a community treatment facility (CTF) in Singapore. Methods. Medical records of consecutive patients admitted to the CTF were retrospectively reviewed. Data retrieved included demographics, frailty, LOS, 30-day readmission, disease severity, and functional statuses on admission and at discharge. Results. In total, 96 older patients (mean age, 80.3 years) were included. According to the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS), 26.0% were robust (CFS 1-3), 27.1% were mildly frail (CFS 4-5), and 46.9% were moderately/ severely frail (CFS 6-9). Compared with the robust and mildly frail groups, the moderately/severely frail group had more severe COVID-19 cases (p=0.033), longer LOS at the CTF (p=0.005), and fewer patients discharged home (p=0.01). Greater disease severity was associated with poorer frailty status (p=0.033), worsening of functional status at discharge (p=0.02), higher International Severe Acute Respiratory and emerging Infection Consortium score (p=0.031), and receipt of <2 doses of COVID-19 vaccine (p=0.005). Risk factors for longer LOS at the CTF and overall LOS were basic ADL–assisted status on admission (p=0.09 and p=0.017, respectively), fully dependent status on admission (p=0.043 and p=0.002, respectively), presence of infective changes on chest X-ray (p=0.027 and p=0.003, respectively), and receipt of <2 doses of COVID-19 vaccine (p=0.007 and p=0.005, respectively). Conclusions. Risk factors for longer LOS in older patients with COVID-19 were basic ADL–assisted status and fully dependent status on admission, presence of infective changes on chest X-ray, and receipt of <2 doses of COVID-19 vaccine. High-risk patients should be identified through assessments of these characteristics. Abstract

Leadership research in early childhood education and care (ECEC) is a relatively new undertaking. It combines leadership concepts from school research as well as from business. There are common aspects in the leadership profession, but the context and the mission define the content of leadership tasks and responsibilities. Data in this cross-cultural study were collected in Finland, Japan, and Singapore from 2012 to 2014. Questionnaires were used as the data collection method and content analysis as the method to explore how leadership tasks define leadership in the different countries. The project included 100 participants in each country. Analysis in this article focuses on leadership tasks in ECEC settings in Finland, Japan, and Singapore. The study revealed that the tasks of ECEC leaders in all three countries are similar--the two most important leadership tasks are pedagogical leadership and human resource management--though implementation of tasks varied based on cultural context. In practice, leaders in Finland spend most of their time in line with the two issues considered most important, leaders in Japan spend their time on service and human resource management, and leaders in Singapore spend their time on pedagogical leadership and service management.

176. The volatile content of giant Oort cloud comet C/2014 UN271 during its return to the planetary region

Abstract

Comets are relatively-pristine remnants of the original planetesimals that were ejected from the planetary region in the late stages of planetary formation. The Oort cloud comet C/2014 UN271, hereafter UN271, is ~140 km in diameter [1,2,3], large enough that it could be an intact example of a planetesimal that formed in the protoplanetary disk before being ejected into the Oort cloud [4]. UN271 is currently beyond 17 au from the Sun as it moves to a periheliondistance of 11 au in 2031. Given its large heliocentric distance the temperatures on and below its surface are too low for efficient sublimation of water ice. It is likely that its activity is driven by hypervolatiles such as CO or CO2 and not H2O [1,5]. It is dynamically new on its first inbound trip to the Solar System's planetary region [6] providing the rare opportunity to study the volatile content of one of the original planetesimals in a pristine state. We present JWST/NIRSpec prism IFU [7] observations of UN271 with R~100 covering the spectral range where we can detect emission features from the vibrational bands of the gas-phase all the main volatiles found in comets (such as CO2, CO and C2H6). Moreover, this range also includes absorption bands of solid-phase water-ice grains [8,9]. Our observations, taken on December 22, 2022, when the comet was at 18.6 au from the Sun, provides constraints on the comet's CO and CO2 production rates, the activity driving mechanism [5], the presence and nature of water-ice grains in its coma and can be compared with similar spectra of Kuiper Belt bodies [10]. Abstract

The isolation and purification of protactinium from uranium materials is essential for 231Pa–235U radiochronometry, but separating Pa from uranium-niobium alloys, a common material in the nuclear fuel cycle, is challenging due to the chemical similarity of Pa and Nb. Here we present three resin chromatography separation techniques for isolating Pa from U and Nb which were independently developed by three different laboratories through ad hoc adaptations of standard operating procedures. Our results underscore the need for and value of purification methods suitable for a diversity of uranium-based materials to ensure the operational readiness of nuclear forensics laboratories.
