Phascolosoma esculenta, an economically important species inhabiting the high tide areas of the intertidal zone, is particularly sensitive to water pollution. Considering its potential as a bioindicator, studies on the ecotoxicology of P. esculenta are imperative. The toxic effects of cadmium (Cd) were analyzed by exposing P. esculenta to different concentrations of Cd (6, 24, 96 mg/L). In this study, the changes in the antioxidative indexes of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), glutathione s-transferase (GST), reduced glutathione (GSH), and microscale malondialdehyde (MDA) were recorded. Copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD) is one of the most important free radical scavenging members. To reveal the antioxidative function of P. esculenta, an important member of the antioxidative system, designated Pe-Cu/Zn SOD, was cloned and analyzed. Phylogenic analysis revealed that Pe-Cu/Zn SOD was located in the invertebrate evolutionary branch of intracellular Cu/Zn SOD (icCu/Zn SOD). The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction results showed that Pe-Cu/Zn SOD messenger ribonucleic acid was widely expressed in all tissues examined. The highest expression levels in coelomic fluid after Cd exposure indicated its function in the stress response. Using a prokaryotic expression system, we obtained a Pe-Cu/Zn SOD recombinant protein, which enhanced the heavy metal tolerance of Escherichia coli. In vivo assays also confirmed that the Pe-Cu/Zn SOD recombinant protein had an antioxidative and free radical scavenging ability. A Cd toxicity experiment, in which purified Pe-Cu/Zn SOD protein was injected into the body cavities of P. esculenta, showed that the reactive oxygen species content in the coelomic fluid of the experimental group was significantly lower compared with the control group. These results suggest that Pe-Cu/Zn SOD played a role in Cd detoxification by chelating heavy metal ions and scavenging reactive oxygen free radicals, and that P. esculenta could be used as a bioindicator to evaluate heavy metal pollution.

Background: Progressive retinal neuroaxonal damage after acute optic neuritis may occur in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). However, it is unclear if treatments used to prevent attacks influence neurodegeneration.Objectives: We aimed to investigate retinal damage in patients treated with disease-modifying drugs in a longitudinal study.Methods: We retrospectively included 50 patients with aquaporin 4-antibody-seropositive NMOSD. Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness, macular ganglion cell complex (mGCC) thickness, total macular volume (TMV), and optic disc measures were acquired by spectral domain optical coherence tomography in patients treated with tocilizumab, rituximab, and azathioprine.Results: Longitudinally, in eyes with a history of ON (NMOSDON+), we observed annual thinning of mGCC [tocilizumab: −1.77 (−3.44, −0.09) μm, p = 0.041; rituximab: −2.03 (−3.58, −0.48) μm, p = 0.017; azathioprine: −1.79 (−2.22, −1.37) μm, p < 0.001], and pRNFL [tocilizumab: −2.07 (−0.75, −3.39) μm, p = 0.005; rituximab: −2.18 (−0.36, −4.00) μm, p = 0.023; azathioprine: −2.37 (−0.98, −3.75) μm, p = 0.003], reduced TMV [tocilizumab: −0.12 (−0.22, −0.01) mm3, p = 0.028; rituximab: −0.15 (−0.21, −0.08) mm3, p = 0.001; azathioprine: −0.12 (−0.20, −0.04) mm3, p = 0.006], and increased cup area [tocilizumab: 0.08 (−0.01, 0.16) mm2, p = 0.010; rituximab: 0.07 (0.01, 0.12) mm2, p = 0.019; azathioprine: 0.14 (0.02, 0.26) mm2, p = 0.023]. However, we detected no significant differences in annual changes in mGCC, pRNFL, TMV, and cup area between patients with tocilizumab, rituximab, and azathioprine in NMOSDON+ eyes. NMOSDON− eyes did not display mGCC or pRNFL thinning in patients treated with tocilizumab and rituximab. Intriguingly, we observed significant thinning of mGCC in patients treated with azathioprine compared with tocilizumab [−0.84 (−1.50, −0.18) μm vs. −0.19 (−0.87, 0.48) μm, p = 0.012] and rituximab [−0.84 (−1.50, −0.18) μm vs. −0.07 (−1.25, −2.51) μm, p = 0.015] in NMOSDON− eyes.Conclusions: This study demonstrated that retinal ganglion cell loss is independent of ON attacks in NMOSD. Tocilizumab and rituximab may delay mGCC thinning in NMOSDON− eyes compared with azathioprine.

Tocilizumab, a humanized anti-IL-6 receptor monoclonal antibody, showed its therapeutic efficacy on neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). To assess the immunological effects of this drug on B cells, follicular T helper (Tfh) cells, and peripheral T helper (Tph) cells in patients with NMOSD, peripheral B cell and Tfh cell phenotypes were evaluated in 26 patients with NMOSD before and after tocilizumab treatment by nine-color flow cytometry, as well as the expression of costimulatory and co-inhibitory molecules on B cells. Results showed that the frequency of CD27+IgD− switched memory B cells, CD27-IgD- double-negative B cells, and CD27highCD38high antibody-secreting cells was increased in patients with NMOSD. Tocilizumab treatment led to a significant shift of B cells to naïve B cells from memory B cells after 3 months. Three markers on B cells associated with T-cell activation (i.e., CD86 CD69, and HLA-DR) were downregulated after tocilizumab treatment. The frequencies of total Tfh and Tph cells were decreased, whereas that of follicular regulatory T cells tended to increase. Intrinsic increased PD-L1 and PD-L2 expression was characteristic of B cells in patients with NMOSD. Tocilizumab selectively restored PD-L1 on B-cell subsets. These results provided evidence that tocilizumab enhanced B- and T-cell homoeostasis by regulating B-cell differentiation and inhibiting lymphocyte activation in patients with NMOSD.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to discover the population structure and genetic diversity of Inner Mongolia White Cashmere goats (IMCGs) and demonstrate the effect of inbreeding on the live body weight (LBW), cashmere yield (CY), fiber length (FL), and fiber diameter (FD) of IMCGs.Materials and Methods: All data were collected from pedigree information and production performance records of IMCGs from 1983 to 2019. The population structure and genetic diversity were analyzed by Endog 4.8 software. Inbreeding coefficients were obtained by the pedigree package in R. Then, a linear regression model was used to analyze how inbreeding influences economic traits in IMCGs. Four levels of inbreeding coefficients (Fi) were classified in this study, including Fi = 0, 0< Fi ≤ 6.25, 6.25< Fi ≤ 12.5 and Fi≥12.5. Variance analysis was performed to determine whether inbreeding levels had a significant effect on economic traits in IMCGs.Results: The proportions of rams and dams in IMCGs for breeding were relatively small, with values of 0.8 and 20.5%, respectively. The proportion of inbred animals in the entire population was high, with values up to 68.6%; however, the average inbreeding coefficient and relatedness coefficient were 4.50 and 8.48%, respectively. To date, the population has experienced 12 generations. The average generation interval obtained in the present study was 4.11 ± 0.01 years. The ram-to-son pathway was lowest (3.97 years), and the ewe-to-daughter pathway was highest (4.24 years). It was discovered that the LBW, CY, and FL increased by 3.88 kg, 208.7 g, and 1.151 cm, respectively, with every 1% increase in the inbreeding coefficient, and the FD decreased by 0.819 μm with every 1% increase in the inbreeding coefficient. Additionally, multiple comparison analysis indicated that when the inbreeding coefficient was higher than 6.25%, the LBW showed an obvious decreasing trend. The threshold value of inbreeding depression in the CY is 12.5%. However, inbreeding depression has not been observed in the FL and FD.Conclusion: Pedigree completeness needs to be further strengthened. The degree of inbreeding in this flock should be properly controlled when designing breeding programs.

Objective To achieve the classification of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by integrating information that utilize the complementary properties of multimodal data, and to provide references for clinical diagnosis. Methods A total of 872 subjects were obtained from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), with both clinical information, structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans. They were divided into the training set (612 subjects) and test set (260 subjects). Based on three unimodal data and four multimodal combinations of different modalities, we constructed the sparse Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis (sPLS-DA) classification models in the training set to achieve the multi-classification. The macro-averaged precision (Macro-P), macro-averaged recall (Macro-R), macro-averaged Fl value (Macro-F1), and accuracy were used to evaluate the model performance, with the optimal combination of modalities obtained explored for their applicability in the test set. Results The classification performance of clinical information (Macro-P = 0.781 8, Macro-R = 0.804 6, Macro-Fl = 0.791 2, Accuracy = 0.796 7) among the unimodal information was better than that of sMRI and fMRI modalities. The optimal number of potential components was 1, and the number of clinical information features was 9. Among the four multimodal combinations, the clinical information + fMRI combination had the strongest classification ability (Macro-P = 0.806 2, Macro-R = 0.800 6, Macro-FI = 0.797 6, Accuracy = 0.813 2), with the optimal number of potential components selected as 1, and the number of features were 5, while the sMRI + fMRI had the worst classification ability (Macro-P = 0.401 7, Macro-R = 0.398 3, Macro-F1 = 0.349 9, Accuracy = 0.565 9). Applying the best modal combination to the test set, the model performance metrics achieved were 0.791 8 for Macro-P, 0.734 5 for Macro-R, 0.758 4 for Macro-F1, and 0.766 4 (0.646 0, 0.846 5) for Accuracy. Conclusion The performance of the sPLS-DA classification model constructed based on each multimodal combination was higher than that of the unimodal, among which the combination of clinical information + fMRI modality had the best performance, which couldgreatly facilitate the formulation of scientific and reasonable clinical diagnosis plans. Abstract Background Synergistic therapy of tumor is a promising way in curing cancer and in order to achieve effective tumor therapy with real-time drug release monitoring, dynamic cellular imaging and antitumor activity. Results In this work, a polymeric nanoparticle with Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) effect and chemo-photodynamic properties was fabricated as the drug vehicle. An amphiphilic polymer of cyclo(RGDfCSH) (cRGD)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-Poly(l-histidine) (PH)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-Protoporphyrin (Por)-acting as both a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and absorption of acceptor in FRET was synthesized and self-assembled into polymeric nanoparticles with epirubicin (EPI)-acting as an antitumor drug for chemotherapy and fluorescence of donor in FRET. Spherical EPI-loaded nanoparticles with the average size of 150 ± 2.4 nm was procured with negatively charged surface, pH sensitivity and high drug loading content (14.9 ± 1.5%). The cellular uptake of EPI-loaded cRGD-PEG-PH-PCL-Por was monitored in real time by the FRET effect between EPI and cRGD-PEG-PH-PCL-Por. The polymeric nanoparticles combined PDT and chemotherapy showed significant anticancer activity both in vitro (IC50 = 0.47 μg/mL) and better therapeutic efficacy than that of free EPI in vivo. Conclusions This work provided a versatile strategy to fabricate nanoassemblies for intracellular tracking of drug release and synergistic chemo-photodynamic therapy.

Abstract Phenotypic and functional heterogeneity is one of the hallmarks of human cancers. Tumor genotype variations among tumors within different patients are known as interpatient heterogeneity, and variability among multiple tumors of the same type arising in the same patient is referred to as intra-patient heterogeneity. Subpopulations of cancer cells with distinct phenotypic and molecular features within a tumor are called intratumor heterogeneity (ITH). Since Nowell proposed the clonal evolution of tumor cell populations in 1976, tumor heterogeneity, especially ITH, was actively studied. Research has focused on the genetic basis of cancer, particularly mutational activation of oncogenes or inactivation of tumor-suppressor genes (TSGs). The phenomenon of ITH is commonly explained by Darwinian-like clonal evolution of a single tumor. Despite the monoclonal origin of most cancers, new clones arise during tumor progression due to the continuous acquisition of mutations. It is clear that disruption of the "epigenetic machinery" plays an important role in cancer development. Aberrant epigenetic changes occur more frequently than gene mutations in human cancers. The epigenome is at the intersection of the environment and genome. Epigenetic dysregulation occurs in the earliest stage of cancer. The current trend of epigenetic therapy is to use epigenetic drugs to reverse and/or delay future resistance to cancer therapies. A majority of cancer therapies fail to achieve durable responses, which is often attributed to ITH. Epigenetic therapy may reverse drug resistance in heterogeneous cancer. Complete understanding of genetic and epigenetic heterogeneity may assist in designing combinations of targeted therapies based on molecular information extracted from individual tumors.

In recent years, there have been increasing reports of missing tourists around the world. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can significantly improve the performance of search and rescue operations. However, planning the search paths of UAVs can be a highly complex optimization problem, and one of the most challenging tasks in the problem formulation is the estimation of target location probability distribution over time. This paper presents a problem of scheduling multiple UAVs to search for missing tourists and proposes a method for estimating tourist location probabilities which change with topographic features, weather conditions, and time. To solve the problem efficiently, we propose a hybrid evolutionary algorithm which consists of the main algorithm and a sub-algorithm. The main algorithm uses specific migration and mutation operators to evolve a population of main solutions, and the sub-algorithm combines a problem-specific heuristic and tabu search method to optimize each UAV path. The experimental results on a wide variety of test instances (including five real-world instances) demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed method.

Previous studies have shown that cashmere production (CP) is related to fibre length (FL), mean fibre diameter (MFD) and live body weight (LWT) in Inner Mongolia cashmere goats (IMCGs). However, the correlation magnitudes of these relationships have not been determined to date. The production year, herd, age, birth status, sex, cashmere production, fibre grades, fibre length, mean fibre diameter and live body weight were obtained for IMCGs from yearlings to 5-year-olds. A multilevel mixed model was constructed to discern the impact factors affecting CP. It was concluded that the production year, herd, age, sex, FL, MFD and LWT had highly significant effects on CP (p .05). The restricted maximum likelihood method (REML) was used to estimate the relationship of CP to all impact factors. Positive correlations were observed between CP and other important economic traits. The regression coefficients for FL, MFD and LBW were 26.50 g/cm, 31.67 g/µm and 2.26 g/kg, respectively. The model fit is relatively good, and the adjusted R-squared value is 0.43. Using a similar method, the relationship of CP to these impacting factors within each fleece grade was analysed. The results showed that LWT had no significant effect on CP in superfine and coarse cashmere grades. Additionally, MFD was not related to CP in coarse cashmere. However, FL, MFD and LWB had highly significant effects on CP in all other FD grades. The regression coefficients of cashmere production for other economic traits varied based on fleece grade.Highlights Cashmere production was positively correlated with live body weight for Inner Mongolia Cashmere goats (IMCGs), which can facilitate indirect selection and reduce the cost of measurement. The fibre diameter should be considered to maintain good quality by establishing a nucleus herd, thereby increasing economic income and protecting a variety of resources.

Spermatogenesis is the intricate and coordinated process by which spermatogonia develop into haploid differentiated spermatozoa. Mitochondria are essential for spermatogenesis, and prohibitin (PHB) is closely associated with mitochondrial structure and function during spermatogenesis. Although PHB has been implicated in spermatogenesis in some taxa, its roles in Opsariichthys bidens have not been determined. In this study, the expression patterns and potential functions of PHB in spermatogenesis in O. bidens were characterized using histological microscopic observations, PCR cloning, real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR), Western blotting (WB) and immunofluorescence (IF). The full-length cDNA of Ob-phb was 1500 bp encoding 271 amino acids. A sequence alignment demonstrated that the PHB protein is conserved among different animals. qPCR revealed that phb mRNA is widely distributed in O. bidens and highly expressed in the testes at stages IV and V. WB revealed that Ob-PHB is located in the mitochondria of testes. IF revealed the colocalization of PHB signals and mitochondria. Signals were detected around nuclei in spermatogonia and spermatocytes, gradually moving to the tail region during spermiogenesis, and finally aggregating in the midpiece. These results indicate that Ob-PHB was expressed in the mitochondria during spermatogenesis. In addition, this study proposed Ob-PHB may participate in the degradation of mitochondria and cell differentiation during spermatogenesis.

Morbidity and mortality caused by infectious diseases rank first among all human illnesses. Many pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear, while misuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of drug-resistant strains. Infectious diseases spread rapidly and pathogens mutate quickly, posing new threats to human health. However, with the increasing use of high-throughput screening of pathogen genomes, research based on big data mining and visualization analysis has gradually become a hot topic for studies of infectious disease prevention and control. In this paper, the framework was performed on four infectious pathogens (Fusobacterium, Streptococcus, Neisseria, and Streptococcus salivarius) through five functions: 1) genome annotation, 2) phylogeny analysis based on core genome, 3) analysis of structure differences between genomes, 4) prediction of virulence genes/factors with their pathogenic mechanisms, and 5) prediction of resistance genes/factors with their signaling pathways. The experiments were carried out from three angles: phylogeny (macro perspective), structure differences of genomes (micro perspective), and virulence and drug-resistance characteristics (prediction perspective). Therefore, the framework can not only provide evidence to support the rapid identification of new or unknown pathogens and thus plays a role in the prevention and control of infectious diseases, but also help to recommend the most appropriate strains for clinical and scientific research. This paper presented a new genome information visualization analysis process framework based on big data mining technology with the accommodation of the depth and breadth of pathogens in molecular level research.

Snowmelt water in spring is an important source of soil water, which is critical to supporting crop growth. Quantifying the contribution of snowmelt water to soil water and its dynamic changes is essential for evaluating soil moisture and allocating agricultural water resources. In this paper, through controlled outdoor experiments, different snow depths and soil depth gradients were set; and snow, precipitation, and soil samples were collected regularly. To analyze the contribution of snowmelt water to soil water and its dynamic changes, the MAT-253 stable isotope ratio mass spectrometer was adopted for hydrogen and oxygen isotope analyses. The results showed that the snowmelt water for snow depths of 10 cm, 30 cm, and 50 cm all contributed to the 0–30 cm soil layer. The contribution increased with soil depth, contributing 8.13%, 8.55%, and 11.24%, respectively. The contribution of the snow cover at the same depth to the soil moisture at different depths also varied, i.e., the contribution increased with increasing soil depth. The snowmelt water retention time at depths of 10 cm, 30 cm, and 50 cm was inconsistent, i.e., it was the longest at 0–10 cm (average of 69 days), followed by 20–30 cm (average of 59 days), and the shortest at 10–20 cm (average of 54 days). The greater the snow depth, the shorter the retention time of the snowmelt water in the different soil layers. For surface soil, the contribution of the snowmelt water at greater depths was significantly different; while for deep soil, the contribution was more sensitive to the snow depth. Regardless of snow depth, soil contributions at different depths were significantly different. Precipitation also affected the contribution of the snowmelt water to the soil water, exhibiting different effects at different depths.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is one of the major enteric pathogens, causing severe enteric disease, resulting in enormous economic losses. The ORF3 gene encodes an accessory protein which is related to the infectivity and virulence of PEDV. In this study, 33 PEDV positive field samples were collected from Guangxi, from 2017 to 2019, and the genetic diversity of ORF3 was investigated. Thirty-eight strains of ORF3 were obtained, and these were composed of five strains of ORF3 named Guangxi naturally truncated strains that were 293 bp in length, with continuous deletions from 172 to 554 bp. The Guangxi naturally truncated strains encoded a truncated protein of 89 amino acids, which had clustered into a new group referred to as Group 3, and these might be involved in the variations of virulence. Three genotypes (G1-1 subgroup, G1-3 subgroup, and Group 3) existed simultaneously in Guangxi based on the genetic and evolutionary analysis of the ORF3 gene. The sequence information in the current study will hopefully facilitate the establishment of a diagnostic method that can differentiate the PEDV field stains. Continued surveillance will be useful for monitoring PEDV transmission. Differentiation of the ORF3 genes in PEDV field strains can help us to choose an appropriate PEDV vaccine candidate in the future and prevent outbreaks of PED more effectively.

For high-end CNC machine tools, the stiffness of the spindle system is one of the most important performance indicators. In this paper, the hydrostatic motorized spindle system of a grinding machine is taken as the research object, and a two-degree-of-freedom stiffness model of the spindle system considering rotor swing is proposed. The stiffness of the spindle system under different excitation frequencies is analyzed, and the contributions of the stiffness of two bearings to the stiffness of the spindle system are evaluated. The vibration test on the spindle system is implemented through the hammering method. The vibration responses of the spindle system are obtained, and the stiffness of the spindle system is identified. The results show that the test results of the stiffness of the spindle system are in good agreement with the theoretical calculation, with an average error of about 14.21%. The research in this paper can provide theoretical and data support for bearing design and stiffness evaluation of a hydrostatic spindle system.

Background: The prevalence of mental health concerns among university students in the United States (U.S.) continues to increase, while current treatments, including medication and counseling, present shortcomings. Higher dairy and calcium intakes are associated with protective effects on mental health; however, previous studies have focused on investigating singular relationships between dairy and calcium intakes and mental health measures. A more complex exploration of these relationships is warranted to better examine whether increasing dairy and calcium intakes could serve as an intervention to improve mental health. The present study sought to further characterize the relationships between dairy and calcium intake, perceived stress, and a variety of mental health measures using linear regression and moderation analyses. Methods: The present cross-sectional study involved students studying at three large U.S. universities, and data collection occurred from April to May 2020 when students were learning remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. An online survey comprising validated tools was distributed among students to assess dairy and calcium intake, perceived stress, anxiety, negative and positive moods, rumination, and resilience, sleep quality and duration, dietary risk, and physical activity. Results: A total of 1233 students completed the study. Higher dairy and calcium intake was coincident with lower perceived stress and higher positive mood scores, while higher calcium intake was also coincident with lower anxiety, rumination, and higher resilience scores. Additionally, as calcium intake increased, the relationship between perceived stress and anxiety and the relationship between perceived stress and negative mood weakened. Dairy intake did not have this effect. Conclusions: Based on the results, and considering that calcium is a shortfall nutrient, universities should consider initiating programs and public health campaigns to promote dairy and calcium intake among this population.

Background: Obesity is a growing epidemic among university students, and the high levels of stress reported by this population could contribute to this issue. Singular relationships between perceived stress; engagement in restrained, uncontrolled, and emotional eating; sleep; dietary risk; and body mass index (BMI) have been reported in the current body of literature; however, these constructs interact with each other, and the complex relationships among them are infrequently examined. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to explore the complex relationships between these constructs using mediation and moderation analyses stratified by gender. Methods: A cross-sectional study, enrolling university students from the United States (U.S.), the Netherlands, South Korea, Malaysia, Ireland, Ghana, and China, was conducted between October 2020 and January 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Perceived stress; maladaptive eating behaviors including restrained, uncontrolled, and emotional eating; sleep duration and quality; dietary risk; and BMI were assessed using validated questionnaires, which were distributed through an online platform. Results: A total of 1392 students completed the online survey (379 male, 973 female, and 40 who self-identified as “other”). Uncontrolled and emotional eating mediated the relationship between perceived stress and dietary risk for both males and females; higher sleep quality weakened this relationship among female students but not males. Emotional eating mediated the relationship between perceived stress and BMI for both males and females, but higher sleep quality weakened this relationship only among females. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that students in higher education are likely to benefit from interventions to reduce uncontrolled and emotional eating. Programs that improve sleep quality, especially during highly stressful periods, may be helpful.

The thermal flying height control (TFC), aka dynamic fly height (DFH), technique has been recently used in the head disk interface of hard disk drives to obtain a lower head-media spacing. The air bearing cooling effect, i.e., the heat conduction between the slider and the air film, has been incorporated in the numerical thermal–mechanical simulation of the slider’s static performance. However, the heating effect of the viscous dissipation of the air flow has not been considered yet. In this article, both effects are included in the simulation of a flying slider with its flying height controlled by thermal protrusion, and different models for the air bearing cooling are used to obtain the slider’s static flying attitudes. The simulation results directly show that the air bearing cooling is dominant compared with the viscous heating. All of the air bearing cooling models, including a recent one that considers the dependence of the air molecular mean free path on the air temperature, have simulation results close to each other. The largest relative difference in the simulated flying height is less than 9% even when the transducer flying height is lowered to below 2 nm.

Slip-corrected Reynolds equations have not been widely used in the air bearing simulations for the head-disk interface in hard disk drives since Fukui and Kaneko [Trans ASME J Tribol 110:253–262, 1988] published a more accurate generalized lubrication equation (FK model) based on the linearized Boltzmann equation for molecular gas lubrication. However, new slip models and slip-corrected Reynolds equations continue to be proposed with certain improvements or with the more physical basis of kinetic theory. Here, we reanalyze those slip models and lubrication equations developed after the FK model was published. It is found that all of the slip-corrected Reynolds equations are of limited use in the air bearing simulations, and that these new slip-corrected Reynolds equations cannot replace the FK model for calculating an accurate pressure distribution of molecular gas lubrication.

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal toxicant and is widely distributed in aquatic environments. It can cause excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the organism, which in turn leads to a series of oxidative damages. Thioredoxin (Trx), a highly conserved disulfide reductase, plays an important role in maintaining the intracellular redox homeostasis in eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Phascolosoma esculenta is an edible marine worm, an invertebrate that is extensively found on the mudflats of coastal China. To explore the molecular response of Trx in mudflat organisms under Cd stress, we identified a new Trx isoform (Trx-like protein 1 gene) from P. esculenta for the first time, designated as PeTrxl. Molecular and structural characterization, as well as multiple sequence and phylogenetic tree analysis, demonstrated that PeTrxl belongs to the Trx superfamily. PeTrxl transcripts were found to be ubiquitous in all tissues, and the highest expression level occurred in the coelomic fluid. Exposure to three sublethal concentrations of Cd resulted in the upregulation and then downregulation of PeTrxl expression levels over time in coelomic fluid of P. esculenta. The significant elevation of PeTrxl expression after 12 and 24 h of Cd exposure at 6 and 96 mg/L, respectively, might reflect its important role in the resistance to Cd stress. Recombinant PeTrxl (rPeTrxl) showed prominent dose-dependent insulin-reducing and ABTS free radical-scavenging abilities. After exposure to 96 mg/L Cd for 24 h, the ROS level increased significantly in the coelomic fluid, suggesting that Cd induced oxidative stress in P. esculenta. Furthermore, the injection of rPeTrxl during Cd exposure significantly reduced the ROS in the coelomic fluid. Our data suggest that PeTrxl has significant antioxidant capacity and can protect P. esculenta from Cd-induced oxidative stress.

A six-degree-of-freedom slider dynamic simulator is developed to analyze the slider’s motion in the vertical, pitch, roll, yaw, length and width directions. The modified time-dependent Reynolds equation is used to model the air bearing and a new second order slip model is used for a bounded contact air bearing pressure. The simulator considers the air bearing shear acting on the air bearing surface and the slider–disk contact and adhesion. Simulation results are analyzed for the effects of the disk surface micro-waviness and roughness, skew angle, slider–disk friction and micro-trailing pad width on the vertical bouncing, down-track and off-track vibrations of a micro-trailing pad partial contact slider.
