The article looks at cities that have changed their name. The Indian city of Bangalore has forfeited its British colonial-era name for Bengalooru. Other Indian cities, such as Bombay and Madras, have followed suit. After apartheid ended in South Africa, Pietersburg became Polokwane and the government is currently considering a proposal to change Pretoria to Tshwane, a precolonial chief. After the ousting of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, the Baghdad neighborhood of Saddam City became Sadr City, in honor of a Shiite leader.
