151. Fusion hindrance for a positive Q-value system

Abstract

An excitation function for the fusion reaction Si28 + Si30 (Q=14.3MeV) has been measured down to 40μb. Deviations from the behavior predicted by the optical model and standard coupled-channels calculations have been observed in this system. The fusion cross sections can be reproduced by a shallow potential model well, which was originally developed to explain the hindrance of heavy-ion fusion for systems with negative Q-values.

Abstract

The excitation function for the fusion-evaporation reaction 28Si + 64Ni has been measured down to a cross section of 25 nb. This is the first observation of fusion hindrance at extreme sub-barrier energies for a system with a small, negative Q-value (- 1.78 MeV). This result is further proof that heavy-ion fusion hindrance, reported earlier only for systems with large, negative Q-values, is a general phenomenon. The measured behavior can be reproduced by coupled-channels calculations with a modified ion-ion potential incorporating the effects of nuclear incompressibility.

Abstract

The Ni-62(n,gamma)Ni-63(t(1/2) = 100 +/- 2 yr) reaction plays an important role in the control of the flow path of the slow neutron-capture (s) nucleosynthesis process. We have measured for the first time the total cross section of this reaction for a quasi-Maxwellian (kT = 25 keV) neutron flux. The measurement was performed by fast-neutron activation, combined with accelerator mass spectrometry to detect directly the Ni-63 product nuclei. The experimental value of 28.4 +/- 2.8 mb, fairly consistent with a recent calculation, affects the calculated net yield of Ni-62 itself and the whole distribution of nuclei with 62 < A < 90 produced by the weak s process in massive stars. 154. Influence of nuclear structure on sub-barrier hindrance in Ni + Ni fusion

Abstract

The fusion excitation function for 64Ni + 64Ni down to a cross section level of 10 nb and have observed a strong fusion hindrance at extreme sub-barrier energies. The onset of the sub-barrier fusion hindrance in 64Ni + 64Ni was found to occur 8.4 MeV lower in center-of-mass energy, whereas a 2 MeV higher energy was expected on the basis of systematics. The effect was found to appear to be associated with the nuclear structure of the interacting nuclei. A strong dependence of the energy where the hindrance was also found to occur on the stiffness of the interacting nuclei.

Abstract

The extinct p-process nuclide 146Sm (t1/2 = 103 ± 5 Myr) is known to have been present in the Early-Solar System and has been proposed as an astrophysical chronometer. 146Sm is also intensely used to date meteorite and planetary differentiation processes, enhancing the importance of an accurate knowledge of the 146Sm half-life. We are engaged in a new determination of the 146Sm half-life in which the 146Sm/147Sm atom ratio is determined by accelerator mass spectrometry at the ATLAS facility of Argonne National Laboratory. In order to reduce systematic errors in the AMS determination of the 146Sm/147Sm ratios (in the range of 10-7-10-9), 146Sm and 147Sm ions were alternately counted in the same detector in the focal plane of a gas-filled magnet, respectively in continuous-wave and attenuated mode. Quantitative attenuation is obtained with the 12 MHz pulsed and ns-bunched ATLAS beam by chopping beam pulses with an RF sweeper in a ratio (digitally determined) down to 1:106. 164. Large angle elastic alpha scattering on a N = Z nucleus above A = 40

Abstract

Large angle elastic scattering of alpha particles from 44Ti, which is the lightest unstable alpha-particle nucleus above A=40, was measured at backward angles. The angular distributions of elastic scattering of alpha particles from 40 and 44Ti were compared. Results indicated that for 40Ca, at angles close to 180° elastic cross sections higher than Rutherford values were confirmed, while corresponding yields for 44Ti were about a factor 20 smaller. An optical model analysis of α+44Ti data produced parameters which were in good agreement with the results.

Abstract

The astrophysically important reaction 14O(α,p)17F has been studied through a measurement of the time-inverse p(17F,α)14O reaction using a radioactive 17F beam. Resonance parameters for several states above an excitation energy of 7 MeV in 18Ne have been obtained. Through a measurement of the partial widths for elastic and inelastic proton scattering, it was determined that for these resonances the contribution of the 14O(α,p)17F* branch populating the first excited state in 17F is small. The results indicate that the contribution of resonances above Ex=7 MeV to the astrophysical (α,p) reaction rate is smaller than was previously assumed.

170. Renal cell carcinoma in functional renal graft: Toward ablative treatments.

Abstract

The occurrence of a kidney transplant tumor is a rare but serious issue with a double risk: the return to dialysis and the development of metastatic cancer. Publications on this topic are mainly case reports. The purpose of this review was to report an exhaustive literature review of functional graft renal cell carcinomas to highlight the impact of tumors on the renal graft outcomes. 201 de novo renal carcinomas in functional renal grafts from 69 publications were included. Incidence was estimated at 0.18%. Graft tumors were mostly asymptomatic (85.9%). Whatever the discovery circumstances of graft tumors, they were mostly documented by graft ultrasounds supplemented by CT-scanning or MR imaging. Nephron sparing surgery (95 patients) was the first treatment performed followed by radiofrequency ablation (38 patients) and cryotherapy (10 patients). The most common tumor graft histology was clear cell carcinoma (46.4%), followed by papillary carcinoma (43.7%). Specific mortality was 2.9% with 6 deaths. Renal graft cell carcinoma is a rare pathology with a low specific death. When possible, conservative treatment should be the first choice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Initial experiments at the ATLAS facility [Nucl. Instr. and Meth. B 92 (1994) 241] resulted in a clear detection of cosmogenic Ar-39 signal at the natural level. The present paper summarizes the recent developments of Ar-39 AMS measurements at ATLAS: the use of an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) positive ion source equipped with a special quartz liner to reduce K-39 background, the development of a gas handling system for small volume argon samples, the acceleration of Ar-39(8+) ions to 232 MeV, and the final separation of Ar-39 from K-39 in a gas-filled spectrograph. The first successful AXIS measurements of Ar-39 in ocean water samples from the Southern Atlantic ventilation experiment (SAVE) are reported. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

The radionuclide Ar-39 is produced in the atmosphere by cosmic rays and has an isotopic abundance of 8.1 x 10(-16). Because its half life (T-1/2 = 269 years) is well matched to the time periods involved in the oceanic currents around the Earth, the measurement of the Ar-39 isotopic ratio is an ideal tool to date ocean water from different depths. It would complement the information gained by the C-14 measurements (T-1/2 = 5730 years). However, the measurement of the isotopic ratio Ar-39/Ar-40 is a technical challenge: 1 L of modern ocean water contains similar to6500 atoms of Ar-39, and produces similar to17 decays per year. Although it has been possible to detect the Ar-39 decays in large volumes of sea water by using the low level counting technique, the possibility of measuring the number of Ar-39 atoms faster and in smaller samples using the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technique would be a major breakthrough for this type of measurement. The development of a viable AMS method for Ar-39 has been underway for several years at Argonne National Laboratory, and is presently hampered by the presence of stable K-39 ions coming from the ion source. Although the intensity of this isobaric contaminant is low (similar topA extracted from the source), it has to be compared with the Ar-39 beam intensity (atoms per minutes). In order to separate, these two beams (whose mass difference is only 1.6 x 10(-5)), the intensity of the K-39 beam coming from the ion source has to be reduced by several orders of magnitude. This reduction has been investigated both at Argonne National Laboratory and at Louvain-la-Neuve. Two techniques have been tried out. In the first, a quartz liner is used to provide a clean surface, while in the second these impurities are buried in a SiO2 layer formed in situ by running the source with a mixture of silane and oxygen. Abstract

Complications following extensor indicis proprius (EIP) tendon transfer are loss of strength, independence and mobility in the index finger in extension. The main goal of this study was to measure the index finger's independent and dependent extension strength after a tendon transfer. Secondary goals were to determine if the index finger retained the ability to extend independently after the transfer and to evaluate second metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint mobility. Our study consisted of 19 patients in whom the EIP tendon had been divided proximally to the extensor hood. The EIP tendon was retrieved through a proximal approach at the distal radius level and rerouted towards a recipient tendon. At an average follow-up of 41 months, the average independent extension strength was 5.6N versus 11N on the contralateral side and the dependent strength was 10.9N versus 20N. No patient complained of a loss of extension strength and all had retained independent active extension on the operated index finger. The second MCP joint on the operated side had an independent extension lag of 15.3° compared to the contralateral healthy side and a dependent extension lag of 0.2°. Two patients were impaired in their daily activities when moving the operated index finger. Our results show that EIP harvesting for tendon transfer leads to decreased independent and dependent strength as well as decreased active extension of the second MCP joint. However, the functional impact was negligible and should not compromise the use of the EIP as a tendon transfer.
