151. A probabilistic formalization of contextual bias in forensic analysis: Evidence that examiner bias leads to systemic bias in the criminal justice system

Abstract

Although researchers have found evidence contextual bias in forensic science, the discussion of contextual bias is currently qualitative. We formalize years of empirical research and extend this research by showing quantitatively how biases can be propagated throughout the legal system, all the way up to the final determination of guilt in a criminal trial. We provide a probabilistic framework for describing how information is updated in a forensic analysis setting by using the ratio form of Bayes' rule. We analyze results from empirical studies using our framework and use simulations to demonstrate how bias can be compounded where experiments do not exist. We find that even minor biases in the earlier stages of forensic analysis lead to large, compounded biases in the final determination of guilt in a criminal trial., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

This paper deals with the applications of stochastic spectral methods for structural topology optimization in the presence of uncertainties. A non-intrusive polynomial chaos expansion is integrated into a topology optimization algorithm to calculate low-order statistical moments of the mechanical-mathematical model response. This procedure, known as robust topology optimization, can optimize the mean of the compliance while simultaneously minimizing its standard deviation. In order to address possible variabilities in the loads applied to the mechanical system of interest, magnitude and direction of the external forces are assumed to be uncertain. In this probabilistic framework, forces are described as a random field or a set of random variables. Representation of the random objects and propagation of load uncertainties through the model are efficiently done through Karhunen-Lo\`{e}ve and polynomial chaos expansions. We take advantage of using polygonal elements, which have been shown to be effective in suppressing checkerboard patterns and reducing mesh dependency in the solution of topology optimization problems. Accuracy and applicability of the proposed methodology are demonstrated by means of several topology optimization examples. The obtained results, which are in excellent agreement with reference solutions computed via Monte Carlo method, show that load uncertainties play an important role in optimal design of structural systems, so that they must be taken into account to ensure a reliable optimization process.

Abstract

We introduce a notion of smooth fields of operators following the notion of smooth fields of Hilbert spaces recently defined by L. Lempert and R. Sz\H{o}oke arXiv:1004.4863(2) . Formally, if $\nabla$ is the connection of a smooth field of Hilbert spaces we show that $\hat\nabla=[\nabla,\cdot]$ defines a connection on a suitable space of fields of operators. In order to provide examples we prove that, if $u$ is a suitable constant of motion of $h(q,p)=\|q\|^2$ (i.e.\ $\{u,h\}=0$), then $\mathfrak{Op}(u)$ is a smooth field of operators over the open interval $(0,\infty)$, where $\mathfrak{Op}$ denotes the canonical quantization (Weyl calculus). Moreover, in such case we show that we can compute derivatives using the formula $\hat\nabla_{X_0}(\mathfrak{Op}(u))=\mathfrak{Op}(\tilde\nabla_{X_0}(u))$, where $\tilde\nabla$ is a Poisson connection on the Poisson algebra of constants of motion and $X_0=2\lambda\frac{\partial}{\partial \lambda}$. We also introduce a notion of smooth field of $C^*$-algebras and we give an example using Hilbert modules theory.

Abstract

Starting with an entropy that includes volumetric, area and length terms as well as logarithmic contributions, we derive the corresponding modified Newtonian gravity and derive the expression for planetary orbits. We calculate the shift of the perihelion of Mercury to find bounds to the parameters associated to the modified Newtonian gravity. We compare the parameter associated to the volumetric contribution in the entropy-area relationship with the value derived for galactic rotation curves and the value obtained from the cosmological constant., Comment: 14 pages, no figures

Abstract

Successful negotiators must learn how to balance optimizing for self-interest and cooperation. Yet current artificial negotiation agents often heavily depend on the quality of the static datasets they were trained on, limiting their capacity to fashion an adaptive response balancing self-interest and cooperation. For this reason, we find that these agents can achieve either high utility or cooperation, but not both. To address this, we introduce a targeted data acquisition framework where we guide the exploration of a reinforcement learning agent using annotations from an expert oracle. The guided exploration incentivizes the learning agent to go beyond its static dataset and develop new negotiation strategies. We show that this enables our agents to obtain higher-reward and more Pareto-optimal solutions when negotiating with both simulated and human partners compared to standard supervised learning and reinforcement learning methods. This trend additionally holds when comparing agents using our targeted data acquisition framework to variants of agents trained with a mix of supervised learning and reinforcement learning, or to agents using tailored reward functions that explicitly optimize for utility and Pareto-optimality., Comment: The Thirty-eighth International Conference on Machine Learning

Abstract

Machine learning has shown extensive growth in recent years and is now routinely applied to sensitive areas. To allow appropriate verification of predictive models before deployment, models must be deterministic. However, major machine learning libraries default to the usage of non-deterministic algorithms based on atomic operations. Solely fixing all random seeds is not sufficient for deterministic machine learning. To overcome this shortcoming, various machine learning libraries released deterministic counterparts to the non-deterministic algorithms. We evaluated the effect of these algorithms on determinism and runtime. Based on these results, we formulated a set of requirements for deterministic machine learning and developed a new software solution, the mlf-core ecosystem, which aids machine learning projects to meet and keep these requirements. We applied mlf-core to develop deterministic models in various biomedical fields including a single cell autoencoder with TensorFlow, a PyTorch-based U-Net model for liver-tumor segmentation in CT scans, and a liver cancer classifier based on gene expression profiles with XGBoost., Comment: https://mlf-core.com and https://github.com/mlf-core/mlf-core
