Abstract

The timing of phenological events, such as leaf-out and flowering, strongly influence plant success and their study is vital to understanding how plants will respond to climate change. Phenological research, however, is often limited by the temporal, geographic, or phylogenetic scope of available data. Hundreds of millions of plant specimens in herbaria worldwide offer a potential solution to this problem, especially as digitization efforts drastically improve access to collections. Herbarium specimens represent snapshots of phenological events and have been reliably used to characterize phenological responses to climate. We review the current state of herbarium-based phenological research, identify potential biases and limitations in the collection, digitization, and interpretation of specimen data, and discuss future opportunities for phenological investigations using herbarium specimens.

Abstract

BackgroundLeuco-methylthioninium bis(hydromethanesulfonate; LMTM), a stable reduced form of the methylthioninium moiety, acts as a selective inhibitor of tau protein aggregation both in vitro and in transgenic mouse models. Methylthioninium chloride has previously shown potential efficacy as monotherapy in patients with Alzheimer's disease. We aimed to determine whether LMTM was safe and effective in modifying disease progression in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.MethodsWe did a 15-month, randomised, controlled double-blind, parallel-group trial at 115 academic centres and private research clinics in 16 countries in Europe, North America, Asia, and Russia with patients younger than 90 years with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Patients concomitantly using other medicines for Alzheimer's disease were permitted to be included because we considered it infeasible not to allow their inclusion; however, patients using medicines carrying warnings of methaemoglobinaemia were excluded because the oxidised form of methylthioninium in high doses has been shown to induce this condition. We randomly assigned participants (3:3:4) to 75 mg LMTM twice a day, 125 mg LMTM twice a day, or control (4 mg LMTM twice a day to maintain blinding with respect to urine or faecal discolouration) administered as oral tablets. We did the randomisation with an interactive web response system using 600 blocks of length ten, and stratified patients by severity of disease, global region, whether they were concomitantly using Alzheimer's disease-labelled medications, and site PET capability. Participants, their study partners (generally carers), and all assessors were masked to treatment assignment throughout the study. The coprimary outcomes were progression on the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-Cog) and the Alzheimer's Disease Co-operative Study-Activities of Daily Living Inventory (ADCS-ADL) scales from baseline assessed at week 65 in the modified intention-to-treat population. This trial is registered with Clinicaltrials.gov (NCT01689246) and the European Union Clinical Trials Registry (2012-002866-11).FindingsBetween Jan 29, 2013, and June 26, 2014, we recruited and randomly assigned 891 participants to treatment (357 to control, 268 to 75 mg LMTM twice a day, and 266 to 125 mg LMTM twice a day). The prespecified primary analyses did not show any treatment benefit at either of the doses tested for the coprimary outcomes (change in ADAS-Cog score compared with control [n=354, 6·32, 95% CI 5·31-7·34]: 75 mg LMTM twice a day [n=257] -0·02, -1·60 to 1·56, p=0·9834, 125 mg LMTM twice a day [n=250] -0·43, -2·06 to 1·20, p=0·9323; change in ADCS-ADL score compared with control [-8·22, 95% CI -9·63 to -6·82]: 75 mg LMTM twice a day -0·93, -3·12 to 1·26, p=0·8659; 125 mg LMTM twice a day -0·34, -2·61 to 1·93, p=0·9479). Gastrointestinal and urinary effects were the most common adverse events with both high doses of LMTM, and the most common causes for discontinuation. Non-clinically significant dose-dependent reductions in haemoglobin concentrations were the most common laboratory abnormality. Amyloid-related imaging abnormalities were noted in less than 1% (8/885) of participants.InterpretationThe primary analysis for this study was negative, and the results do not suggest benefit of LMTM as an add-on treatment for patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Abstract

As researchers collect increasingly large molecular data sets to reconstruct the Tree of Life, the heterogeneity of signals in the genomes of diverse organisms poses challenges for traditional phylogenetic analysis. A class of phylogenetic methods known as "species tree methods" have been proposed to directly address one important source of gene tree heterogeneity, namely the incomplete lineage sorting or deep coalescence that occurs when evolving lineages radiate rapidly, resulting in a diversity of gene trees from a single underlying species tree. Although such methods are gaining in popularity, they are being adopted with caution in some quarters, in part because of an increasing number of examples of strong phylogenetic conflict between concatenation or supermatrix methods and species tree methods. Here we review theory and empirical examples that help clarify these conflicts. Thinking of concatenation as a special case of the more general model provided by the multispecies coalescent can help explain a number of differences in the behavior of the two methods on phylogenomic data sets. Recent work suggests that species tree methods are more robust than concatenation approaches to some of the classic challenges of phylogenetic analysis, including rapidly evolving sites in DNA sequences, base compositional heterogeneity and long branch attraction. We show that approaches such as binning, designed to augment the signal in species tree analyses, can distort the distribution of gene trees and are inconsistent. The palpable dissatisfaction and concerns of students, staff, and faculty--often in the form of protests and demonstrations--continue to challenge contemporary college and university campuses. Practical considerations notwithstanding, what remains are questions regarding how higher education scholars can align their research with broader sociopolitical aims to engage postsecondary education and its stakeholders in organized resistance. In this article, we offer interpretive criteria by which the study of higher education can better understand, and postsecondary researchers can more deliberately engage in, the production of activist scholarship.

Abstract

Chameleon theories of gravity predict that the gaseous component of isolated dwarf galaxies rotates with a faster velocity than the stellar component. In this paper, we exploit this effect to obtain new constraints on the model parameters using the measured rotation curves of six low surface brightness galaxies. For $f(R)$ theories, we rule out values of $f_{R0}>10^{-6}$. For more general theories, we find that the constraints from Cepheid variable stars are currently more competitive than the bounds we obtain here but we are able to rule out self-screening parameters $\chi_c>10^{-6}$ for fifth-force strengths (coupling of the scalar to matter) as low as $0.05$ the Newtonian force. This region of parameter space has hitherto been inaccessible to astrophysical probes. We discuss the future prospects for improving these bounds., Comment: Updated to match published version

187. Core-shell nanoparticle models for in-situ SERS measurements of carbonate dissolution under environmentally realistic conditions

Abstract

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy was used in conjunction with cyclic voltammetry to probe the initial stages of the deposition and dissolution of calcium carbonate. Gold nanoparticles were synthesised and employed for their SERS activity so that the weak signal usually associated with calcium carbonate was enhanced to a degree whereby the very initial stages of both deposition and dissolution would be revealed. Reduction potentials were utilised along with electrolyte composition to encourage the deposition and control the phase or morphology of calcium carbonated produced, this was further explored using core-shell type gold nanoparticles with calcium carbonate shells. Novel multinucleated calcite particles were produced with numerous nanoparticle seeds contained within, the presence of which was attributed to the multinucleated nature of the particles, Au@calcium carbonate nanoparticles were also synthesised with various shell features. Gold coated platinum single crystals were produced and calcium carbonate was electrochemically deposited on the surface to probe this interface and ascertain whether epitaxial growth occurred and could be controlled for the purpose of better understanding this interface in the hope that it would better inform of the conditions governing core-shell particle synthesis. It was found that epitaxial growth of calcite occurred on the Au(111) and Au(110) but not the Au(100). Finally the reaction of carbon dioxide with caesium to form carbonate on gold single crystals was studied under ultra-high vacuum conditions. The aim being to improve the understanding of the fundamental properties of carbonates forming and interacting with the gold surface. The development of the carbonate was investigated with XPS and STM. At well annealed, ordered gold surfaces dissolution of Cs into the gold to form CsAu alloys was reversed on adsorption of carbon dioxide and caesium carbonate was formed. On roughened surfaces however, neither Cs dissolution nor carbonate formation was observed. This was attributed to the availability of high energy adsorption sites at the sputtered surface. Thermal decomposition of the carbonates occurred between 473 K and 673 K with the desorption of CO2 and the formation of Cs oxide.

200. They (Don't) Care about Education: A Counternarrative on Black Male Students' Responses to Inequitable Schooling

Abstract

Little is known about Black male students who graduate from high school, enroll in college, aspire to earn degrees beyond the baccalaureate, and espouse commitments to various career pathways in the field of education (teaching, school administration, education research, the professoriate, education policy, and so forth). What compels these men to care so much about education, despite what is routinely reported in the literature about their gradual disinvestment in schooling and comparatively lower rates of educational attainment? This question was pursued in the study upon which this article is based. This article is based primarily on a systematic content analysis of essays written by 304 Black male undergraduates attending colleges and universities across the United States. Each applied to participate in the University of Pennsylvania's Grad Prep Academy, an initiative for college juniors who aspire to earn Ph.D.s in the field of education. The results reveal three themes that build upon each other to show an uncommon perspective on Black male students' encounters with and responses to inequitable schooling: (1) awareness of educational inequities; (2) beliefs in education as the great equalizer; and (3) purposeful pursuits of the Ph.D. in education.
