155. Integration of Production Data Analysis in Ensemble History Matching

Abstract

The reservoir model-based forecast uncertainty reduction requires the integration of multiple sources of information. Among them, production data are of great value. For this reason, a methodology able to manage them within the history matching process to improve the model calibration process is highly recommended. The scope of the activity is then to set up a new workflow able to fully integrate Production Data Analysis (PDA) with an Ensemble History Matching (ENHM) workflow. PDA outcomes represent evidence highlighted by the whole production history based on the collection, analysis, and integration of all available geological and dynamic data, such as injector-producer connections. A set of alternative realizations ("ensemble") needs to be created representing all the relevant uncertainties. Ensemble Screening is necessary to eliminate the non-PDA compliant realizations; comparing streamlines generated on the ensemble with the PDA outcomes and eliminating the non-representative realizations. Ensemble diagnostic tools can help to discriminate the ensemble consistency with the basic reservoir facts coming from PDA and which parameters or assumptions in the ensemble creation need to be revised because of the non-compatibility from a statistical point of view (like conflicting or insufficient parameterizations). The ensemble will be matched through the ENHM iterative process. The proposed workflow uses then the Fluid Path Conceptual Model (FPCM) derived from PDA, as a key driver to localize the model updates performed by the iterative ensemble process. The proposed workflow allows obtaining a set of realizations representative of both the main geological and dynamical features of the field. This in turn will result in a higher predictive quality of the model-based forecasts. The performed tests allow us to conclude that PDA outcomes provide significant information regarding the fluid communications that can improve the ensemble reservoir parameterization reducing the reservoir uncertainties. Ensemble distance computation based on streamline attributes, like Time of Flight and streamline normalized fraction, can find similarities among realizations reflecting the connectivity patterns relevant to the PDA perspective. The evidence highlighted from PDA can be used as firm input in the ensemble realizations generation also impacting fundamental steps, such as the geological setup. Moreover, PDA can help to identify the main uncertainty parameters characterizing the field and suggests a reasonable range of variability to be considered within the ensemble approach. Multiple ensemble diagnostic tools were developed to check the ensemble quality against PDA outcomes using different streamline attributes as a distance. Diagnostic tools, moreover, allow to identify a reduced number of model realizations representative of the ensemble variability on which run the forecast. The advantages of the proposed workflow can balance the unavoidable additional time with respect to standard ensemble history matching for its practical realizations on field cases, especially with many data and high model complexity.

Abstract

We consider the problem of automatically synthesizing a hybrid controller fornon-linear dynamical systems which ensures that the closed-loop fulfills anarbitrary \emph{Linear Temporal Logic} specification. Moreover, thespecification may take into account logical context switches induced by anexternal environment or the system itself. Finally, we want to avoid classicalbrute-force time- and space-discretization for scalability. We achieve thesegoals by a novel two-layer strategy synthesis approach, where the controllergenerated in the lower layer provides invariant sets and basins of attraction,which are exploited at the upper logical layer in an abstract way. In order toachieve this, we provide new techniques for both the upper- and lower-levelsynthesis. Our new methodology allows to leverage both the computing power of statespace control techniques and the intelligence of finite game solving forcomplex specifications, in a scalable way.

161. Is oropharyngoesophageal scintigraphy the method of choice for assessing dysphagia in systemic sclerosis? A single center experience

Abstract

Objectives To evaluate the performance of oropharyngoesophageal scintigraphy (OPES) in the assessment of dysphagia in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), and to compare OPES results with those of barium esophagogram. Methods Adult SSc patients who underwent OPES for the assessment of dysphagia were enrolled. OPES was performed with both liquid and semisolid boluses and provided information regarding oropharyngeal transit time, esophageal transit time (ETT), oropharyngeal retention index (OPRI), esophageal retention index (ERI), and site of bolus retention. Barium esophagogram results were also collected. Results Fifty-seven SSc patients (87.7% female, mean age 57.7 years) with dysphagia were enrolled. OPES identified at least one alteration in each patient and findings were generally worse for the semisolid bolus. Esophageal motility was widely impaired with 89.5% of patients with an increased semisolid ERI, and middle-lower esophagus was the most frequent site of bolus retention. However, oropharyngeal impairment was highlighted by widespread increased OPRI, especially in anti-topoisomerase I positivity. Older patients and with longer disease duration presented slower semisolid ETT (p = 0.029 and p = 0.002, respectively). Eleven patients with dysphagia had a negative barium esophagogram: all of them presented some alterations in OPES parameters. Conclusion OPES revealed a marked SSc esophageal impairment, in terms of both slowed transit time and increased bolus retention, but also shed light on oropharyngeal swallowing alterations. OPES showed high sensitivity, being able to detect swallowing alterations in dysphagic patients with negative barium esophagogram. Therefore, the use of OPES for the assessment of SSc-related dysphagia in clinical practice should be promoted.

Abstract

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is characterized by a complex etiopathogenesis encompassing both host genetic and environmental -infectious/toxic- factors responsible for altered fibrogenesis and diffuse microangiopathy. A wide spectrum of clinical phenotypes may be observed in patients' populations from different geographical areas. We investigated the prevalence of specific clinical and serological phenotypes in patients with definite SSc enrolled at tertiary referral centres in different Italian geographical macro-areas. The observed findings were compared with those reported in the world literature. Materials and methods: The clinical features of 1538 patients (161 M, 10.5%; mean age 59.8 ± 26.9 yrs.; mean disease duration 8.9 ± 7.7 yrs) with definite SSc recruited in 38 tertiary referral centres of the SPRING (Systemic sclerosis Progression INvestiGation Group) registry promoted by Italian Society of Rheumatology (SIR) were obtained and clustered according to Italian geographical macroareas. Results: Patients living in Southern Italy were characterized by more severe clinical and/or serological SSc phenotypes compared to those in Northern and Central Italy; namely, they show increased percentages of diffuse cutaneous SSc, digital ulcers, sicca syndrome, muscle involvement, arthritis, cardiopulmonary symptoms, interstitial lung involvement at HRCT, as well increased prevalence of serum anti-Scl70 autoantibodies. In the same SSc population immunusppressive drugs were frequently employed. The review of the literature underlined the geographical heterogeneity of SSc phenotypes, even if the observed findings are scarcely comparable due to the variability of methodological approaches. Conclusion: The phenotypical differences among SSc patients' subgroups from Italian macro-areas might be correlated to genetic/environmental co-factors, and possibly to a not equally distributed national network of information and healthcare facilities.

Abstract

We study networks with linear dynamics where the presence of symmetries of the pair (Formula presented.), induces a partition of the network nodes in clusters and the matrix A is not restricted to be in Laplacian form. For these networks, an invariant group consensus subspace can be defined, in which the nodes in the same cluster evolve along the same trajectory in time. We prove that the network dynamics is uncontrollable in directions orthogonal to this subspace. Under the assumption that the dynamics parallel to this subspace is controllable, we design optimal controllers that drive the group consensus dynamics towards a desired state. Then, we consider the problem of selecting additional control inputs that stabilise the group consensus subspace and obtain bounds on the minimum number of additional inputs and driver nodes needed to this end. Altogether, our results indicate that it is possible to independently design the control actions along and transverse to the group consensus subspace.

Abstract

We propose a constructive method to design a pinning control law that synchronizes a network of stochastic dynamical systems. Different from traditional pinning control, we add to the standard proportional controller a nonlinear feedback term that, in the absence of coupling, would minimize a given cost functional. We then derive analytic guarantees that the proposed control law can effectively synchronize coupled noisy systems described by stochastic differential equations. Building on our theoretical results, we provide an algorithm for control design, whose effectiveness is illustrated on numerical testbeds. Finally, we perform extensive Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed nonlinear pinning strategy and compare it against the traditional proportional law.

Abstract

Background: The Covid-19 pandemic may have a deleterious impact on patients with autoimmune systemic diseases (ASD) due to their deep immune-system alterations. Objective: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of symptomatic Covid-19 and its correlations with both organ involvement and ongoing treatments in a large series of Italian ASD patients during the first wave of pandemic. Methods: Our multicenter telephone 6-week survey included 3,029 unselected ASD patients enrolled at 36 tertiary referral centers of northern, central, and southern Italian macro-areas with different diffusion of the pandemic. Symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection was classified as definite Covid-19 (presence of symptoms plus positive oral/nasopharyngeal swabs) or highly suspected Covid-19 (highly suggestive symptoms, in the absence of a swab testing). Results: A significantly higher prevalence of definite plus highly suspected Covid-19 compared to the Italian general population was detected in the whole ASD series (p=.000), as well as in patients from the three macro-areas (p=.000 in all). Statistically higher prevalence of Covid-19 was also found in connective tissue diseases compared to chronic arthritis subgroup (p=.000) and in ASD patients with pre-existing interstitial lung involvement (p=.000). Patients treated with either conventional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and/or biological DMARDs showed a significantly lower prevalence of Covid-19 (p=.000 in both). Finally, scleroderma patients undergoing low-dose aspirin showed a significantly lower rate of Covid-19 compared to those without (p=0.003). Conclusion: The higher prevalence of Covid-19 in ASD patients, along with the significant correlations with important clinical features and therapeutic regimens, suggests the need to develop targeted prevention/management strategies during the current pandemic wave.

186. How to estimate variability in affinity relationships in partially observed groups of domestic herbivores?

Abstract

Animal sociability measurements based on inter-individual distances or nearest-neighbour distributions can be obtained automatically with telemetry collars. So far, all the indices that have been used require the whole group to be observed. Here, we propose an index of the variability in affinity relationships in groups of domestic herbivores, whose definition does not depend on group size and that can be used even if some data are missing. This index and its estimators are based on a function that measures how frequently an animal is closer than another one from a third animal. When no data are missing, we show that our estimator and the variance of the sociability matrixsensu Sibbald (considered as the reference method) are strongly correlated. We then consider two cases of missing data. In the first case, some animals are randomly missing, that is, to account for random breakdown of telemetry collars. Our estimator is unbiased by such missing data and its variance decreases as the number of observation dates increases. In the second case, the same animals are missing at all observation dates, that is, in large herds where there are more individuals to be observed than available telemetry collars. Our estimator of affinity variance within a group is biased by such missing data. Thus, it requires changing animals equipped with telemetry collars regularly during the experiment. Conversely, the estimator remains unbiased at the population level, that is, if several independent groups are being analysed. We finally illustrate how this estimator can be used by investigating changes in the variability of affinities according to group size in grazing heifers.

Abstract

This paper has the objective to empirically test Harrod’s explanations of economic dynamics addressing both growth and business cycles. In particular we test Harrod’s speculation that opening the economy to foreign trade could lead to a reduction of cyclical instability. The main variables determining the dynamic behaviour are wealth, savings, competitiveness and, therefore, balance of trade. The behaviour of the model under scrutiny is highly non-linear and the conclusion is that stable cycles are possible only under particular conditions. In fact, this empirical test shows a stable long-run pattern for those specific parameters.

Abstract

Objectives: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a severe multiple-organ disease characterised by unpredictable clinical course, inadequate response to treatment, and poor prognosis. National SSc registries may provide large and representative patients cohorts required for descriptive and prognostic studies. Therefore, the Italian Society for Rheumatology promoted the registry SPRING (Systemic sclerosis Progression INvestiGation). Methods: The SPRING is a multi-centre rheumatological cohort study encompassing the wide scleroderma spectrum, namely the primary Raynaud's phenomenon (pRP), suspected secondary RP, Very Early Diagnosis of Systemic Sclerosis (VEDOSS), and definite SSc. Here we describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of a population of 2,028 Italian patients at the initial phase of enrolment, mainly focusing on the cohort of 1,538 patients with definite SSc. Results: Definite SSc showed a significantly higher prevalence of digital ulcers, capillaroscopic 'late' pattern, oesophageal and cardio-pulmonary involvement compared to VEDOSS, as expected on the basis of the followed classification criteria. The in-depth analysis of definite SSc revealed that male gender, diffuse cutaneous subset, and anti-Scl70 seropositivity were significantly associated with increased prevalence of the most harmful disease manifestations. Similarly, patients with very short RP duration (≤1 year) at SSc diagnosis showed a statistically increased prevalence of unfavourable clinico-serological features. Conclusions: Nationwide registries with suitable subsetting of patients and follow-up studies since the prodromal phase of the disease may give us valuable insights into the SSc natural history and main prognostic factors.

Abstract

ObjectiveSystemic sclerosis (SSc) is burdened by Raynaud phenomenon (RP) and digital ulcers (DUs), and sometimes standard vasoactive therapies are ineffective or contraindicated. Selexipag is an oral selective IP prostacyclin receptor agonist approved for the treatment of SSc-related pulmonary arterial hypertension. We aimed to evaluate the clinical and instrumental efficacy of selexipag in SSc digital vasculopathy.MethodsPatients with SSc with severe digital vasculopathy refractory or with contraindication to all other vasoactive therapies were administered selexipag. RP- and DU-related clinical outcomes were evaluated, and digital perfusion was assessed by laser speckle contrast analysis (LASCA), all at baseline and after 3 months.ResultsSelexipag was administered to 9 patients with SSc (66.6% female, mean age 52.3 [SD 16.6] yrs). One patient had to stop the drug because of adverse effects. After 3 months of selexipag administration, there was a significant reduction in RP daily episodes (P= 0.01) and RP mean duration (P= 0.04). The number of DUs decreased from 10 to 4 without reaching statistical significance. A significant improvement in mean perfusion of the fingers (P= 0.02) was observed with LASCA.ConclusionSelexipag showed good potential for the treatment of SSc digital vasculopathy. Our results are certainly preliminary, yet quite encouraging. New trials for the evaluation of selexipag efficacy in SSc digital vasculopathy are needed.

Abstract

We propose a class of locally Lipschitz functions with piecewise structure for use as Lyapunov functions for hybrid dynamical systems. Subject to some regularity of the dynamics, we show that Lyapunov inequalities can be checked only on a dense set and thus we avoid checking them at points of nondifferentiability of the Lyapunov function. Abstract

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease characterised by microvasculopathy, immune dysregulation, and skin and visceral organ fibrosis. Every year novel insights into the pathogenesis, organ involvement and treatment of this severe disease are published in the scientific community.In this review we report an overview of some of the most relevant contributions published in 2021.
