Search

The assumption of isotropy -- that the Universe looks the same in all directions on large scales -- is fundamental to the standard cosmological model. This model forms the building blocks of essentially all of our cosmological knowledge to date. It is therefore critical to empirically test in which regimes its core assumptions hold. Anisotropies in the cosmic expansion are expected on small scales due to nonlinear structures in the late Universe, however, the extent to which these anisotropies might impact our low-redshift observations remains to be fully tested. In this paper, we use fully general relativistic simulations to calculate the expected local anisotropic expansion and identify the dominant multipoles in cosmological parameters to be the quadrupole in the Hubble parameter and the dipole in the deceleration parameter. We constrain these multipoles simultaneously in the new Pantheon+ supernova compilation. The fiducial analysis is done in the rest frame of the CMB with peculiar velocity corrections. Under the fiducial range of redshifts in the Hubble flow sample, we find a $\sim 2\sigma$ deviation from isotropy. We constrain the eigenvalues of the quadrupole in the Hubble parameter to be $\lambda_1 =0.021\pm{ 0.011}$ and $ {\lambda_2= 3.15\times 10^{-5}}\pm 0.012$ and place a $1\sigma$ upper limit on its amplitude of $2.88\%$. We find no significant dipole in the deceleration parameter, finding constraints of $q_{\rm dip} = 4.5^{+1.9}_{-5.4}$. However, in the rest frame of the CMB without corrections, we find $ q_{ \rm dip} = 9.6^{+4.0}_{-6.9}$, a $>2\sigma$ positive amplitude. We also investigate the impact of these anisotropies on the Hubble tension. We find a maximal shift of $0.30$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ in the monopole of the Hubble parameter and conclude that local anisotropies are unlikely to fully explain the observed tension., Comment: 12 pages, to be submitted to MNRAS

Narrow transient emission lines (flash-ionization features) in early supernova (SN) spectra trace the presence of circumstellar material (CSM) around the massive progenitor stars of core-collapse SNe. The lines disappear within days after the SN explosion, suggesting that this material is spatially confined, and originates from enhanced mass loss shortly (months to a few years) prior to explosion. We performed a systematic survey of H-rich (Type II) SNe discovered within less than two days from explosion during the first phase of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey (2018-2020), finding thirty events for which a first spectrum was obtained within $< 2$ days from explosion. The measured fraction of events showing flash ionisation features ($>36\%$ at $95\%$ confidence level) confirms that elevated mass loss in massive stars prior to SN explosion is common. We find that SNe II showing flash ionisation features are not significantly brighter, nor bluer, nor more slowly rising than those without. This implies that CSM interaction does not contribute significantly to their early continuum emission, and that the CSM is likely optically thin. We measured the persistence duration of flash ionisation emission and find that most SNe show flash features for $\approx 5 $ days. Rarer events, with persistence timescales $>10$ days, are brighter and rise longer, suggesting these may be intermediate between regular SNe II and strongly-interacting SNe IIn.

We present the Young Supernova Experiment Data Release 1 (YSE DR1), comprised of processed multi-color Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) griz and Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) gr photometry of 1975 transients with host-galaxy associations, redshifts, spectroscopic/photometric classifications, and additional data products from 2019 November 24 to 2021 December 20. YSE DR1 spans discoveries and observations from young and fast-rising supernovae (SNe) to transients that persist for over a year, with a redshift distribution reaching z~0.5. We present relative SN rates from YSE's magnitude- and volume-limited surveys, which are consistent with previously published values within estimated uncertainties for untargeted surveys. We combine YSE and ZTF data, and create multi-survey SN simulations to train the ParSNIP and SuperRAENN photometric classification algorithms; when validating our ParSNIP classifier on 472 spectroscopically classified YSE DR1 SNe, we achieve 82% accuracy across three SN classes (SNe Ia, II, Ib/Ic) and 90% accuracy across two SN classes (SNe Ia, core-collapse SNe). Our classifier performs particularly well on SNe Ia, with high (>90%) individual completeness and purity, which will help build an anchor photometric SNe Ia sample for cosmology. We then use our photometric classifier to characterize our photometric sample of 1483 SNe, labeling 1048 (~71%) SNe Ia, 339 (~23%) SNe II, and 96 (~6%) SNe Ib/Ic. YSE DR1 provides a training ground for building discovery, anomaly detection, and classification algorithms, performing cosmological analyses, understanding the nature of red and rare transients, exploring tidal disruption events and nuclear variability, and preparing for the forthcoming Vera C. The local distance ladder estimate of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) is important in cosmology, given the recent tension with the early universe inference. We estimate $H_0$ from the Type Ia supernova (SN~Ia) distance ladder, inferring SN~Ia distances with the hierarchical Bayesian SED model, BayeSN. This method has a notable advantage of being able to continuously model the optical and near-infrared (NIR) SN~Ia light curves simultaneously. We use two independent distance indicators, Cepheids or the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), to calibrate a Hubble-flow sample of 67 SNe~Ia with optical and NIR data. We estimate $H_0 = 74.82 \pm 0.97$ (stat) $\pm\, 0.84$ (sys) km\,s$^{-1}$\,Mpc$^{-1}$ when using the calibration with Cepheid distances to 37 host galaxies of 41 SNe~Ia, and $70.92 \pm 1.14$ (stat) $\pm\,1.49$ (sys) km\,s$^{-1}$\,Mpc$^{-1}$ when using the calibration with TRGB distances to 15 host galaxies of 18 SNe~Ia. For both methods, we find a low intrinsic scatter $\sigma_{\rm int} \lesssim 0.1$ mag. We test various selection criteria and do not find significant shifts in the estimate of $H_0$. Simultaneous modelling of the optical and NIR yields up to $\sim$15\% reduction in $H_0$ uncertainty compared to the equivalent optical-only cases. Supernovae (SNe) that have been multiply-imaged by gravitational lensing are rare and powerful probes for cosmology. Each detection is an opportunity to develop the critical tools and methodologies needed as the sample of lensed SNe increases by orders of magnitude with the upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. The latest such discovery is of the quadruply-imaged Type Ia SN 2022qmx (aka, "SN Zwicky") at $z=0.3544$. SN Zwicky was discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) in spatially unresolved data. Here we present follow-up Hubble Space Telescope observations of SN Zwicky, the first from the multi-cycle "LensWatch" program. We measure photometry for each of the four images of SN Zwicky, which are resolved in three WFC3/UVIS filters (F475W, F625W, F814W) but unresolved with WFC3/IR~F160W, and present an analysis of the lensing system using a variety of independent lens modeling methods. We find consistency between lens model predicted time delays ($\lesssim1$ day), and delays estimated with the single epoch of HST colors ($\lesssim3.5$ days), including the uncertainty from chromatic microlensing ($\sim1$-$1.5$ days). Our lens models converge to an Einstein radius of $\theta_E=(0.168^{+0.009}_{-0.005})\prime\prime$, the smallest yet seen in a lensed SN system. The "standard candle" nature of SN Zwicky provides magnification estimates independent of the lens modeling that are brighter than predicted by $\sim1.7^{+0.8}_{-0.6}$mag and $\sim0.9^{+0.8}_{-0.6}$mag for two of the four images, suggesting significant microlensing and/or additional substructure beyond the flexibility of our image-position mass models.

Detecting gravitationally lensed supernovae is among the biggest challenges in astronomy. It involves a combination of two very rare phenomena: catching the transient signal of a stellar explosion in a distant galaxy and observing it through a nearly perfectly aligned foreground galaxy that deflects light towards the observer. High-cadence optical observations with the Zwicky Transient Facility, with an unparalleled large field of view, led to the detection of a multiply-imaged Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), ``SN Zwicky", a.k.a. SN 2022qmx. Magnified nearly twenty-five times, the system was found thanks to the ``standard candle" nature of SNe Ia. High-spatial resolution imaging with the Keck telescope resolved four images of the supernova with very small angular separation, corresponding to an Einstein radius of only $\theta_E =0.167"$ and almost identical arrival times. The small $\theta_E$ and faintness of the lensing galaxy is very unusual, highlighting the importance of supernovae to fully characterise the properties of galaxy-scale gravitational lenses, including the impact of galaxy substructures., Comment: Matches published version in Nature Astronomy

We present Young Supernova Experiment $grizy$ photometry of SN 2021hpr, the third Type Ia supernova sibling to explode in the Cepheid calibrator galaxy, NGC 3147. Siblings are useful for improving SN-host distance estimates, and investigating the contributions towards the SN Ia intrinsic scatter (post-standardisation residual scatter in distance estimates). We thus develop a principled Bayesian framework for analyzing SN Ia siblings. At its core is the cosmology-independent relative intrinsic scatter parameter, $\sigma_{Rel}$: the dispersion of siblings distance estimates relative to one another within a galaxy. It quantifies the contribution towards the total intrinsic scatter, $\sigma_0$, from within-galaxy variations about the siblings' common properties. It also affects the combined-distance uncertainty. We present analytic formulae for computing a $\sigma_{Rel}$-posterior from individual siblings distances (estimated using any SN-model). Applying a newly trained BayeSN model, we fit the light curves of each sibling in NGC 3147 individually, to yield consistent distance estimates. However, the wide $\sigma_{Rel}$-posterior means $\sigma_{Rel}\approx\sigma_0$ is not ruled out. We thus combine the distances by marginalizing over $\sigma_{Rel}$ with an informative prior: $\sigma_{Rel}\sim U(0,\sigma_0)$. Simultaneously fitting the trio's light curves improves constraints on distance, and each sibling's individual dust parameters, compared to individual fits. Higher correlation also tightens dust parameter constraints. Therefore, $\sigma_{Rel}$-marginalization yields robust estimates of siblings distances for cosmology, and dust parameters for siblings-host correlation studies. Incorporating NGC 3147's Cepheid-distance yields $H_0=78.4\pm 6.5\,$km/s/Mpc. Self-supervised models are increasingly prevalent in machine learning (ML) since they reduce the need for expensively labeled data. Because of their versatility in downstream applications, they are increasingly used as a service exposed via public APIs. At the same time, these encoder models are particularly vulnerable to model stealing attacks due to the high dimensionality of vector representations they output. Yet, encoders remain undefended: existing mitigation strategies for stealing attacks focus on supervised learning. We introduce a new dataset inference defense, which uses the private training set of the victim encoder model to attribute its ownership in the event of stealing. The intuition is that the log-likelihood of an encoder's output representations is higher on the victim's training data than on test data if it is stolen from the victim, but not if it is independently trained. We compute this log-likelihood using density estimation models. As part of our evaluation, we also propose measuring the fidelity of stolen encoders and quantifying the effectiveness of the theft detection without involving downstream tasks; instead, we leverage mutual information and distance measurements. The detonation of a thin ($\lesssim$$0.03\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$) helium shell (He-shell) atop a $\sim$$1\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ white dwarf (WD) is a promising mechanism to explain normal Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), while thicker He-shells and less massive WDs may explain some recently observed peculiar SNe Ia. We present observations of SN 2020jgb, a peculiar SN Ia discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). Near maximum light, SN 2020jgb is slightly subluminous (ZTF $g$-band absolute magnitude $M_g$ between $-18.2$ and $-18.7$ mag depending on the amount of host galaxy extinction) and shows an unusually red color ($g_\mathrm{ZTF}-r_\mathrm{ZTF}$ between 0.4 and 0.2 mag) due to strong line-blanketing blueward of $\sim$5000 $\r{A}$. These properties resemble those of SN 2018byg, a peculiar SN Ia consistent with a thick He-shell double detonation (DDet) SN. Using detailed radiative transfer models, we show that the optical spectroscopic and photometric evolution of SN 2020jgb are broadly consistent with a $\sim$$0.95\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ (C/O core + He-shell; up to $\sim$$1.00\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ depending on the total host extinction) progenitor ignited by a thick ($\sim$$0.13\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$) He-shell. We detect a prominent absorption feature at $\sim$1 $\mu\mathrm{m}$ in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of SN 2020jgb, which could originate from unburnt helium in the outermost ejecta. While the sample size is limited, similar 1 $\mu\mathrm{m}$ features have been detected in all the thick He-shell DDet candidates with NIR spectra obtained to date. SN 2020jgb is also the first subluminous, thick He-shell DDet SN discovered in a star-forming galaxy, indisputably showing that He-shell DDet objects occur in both star-forming and passive galaxies, consistent with the normal SN Ia population., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures. We present a measurement of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) using type Ia supernova (SNe Ia) in the near-infrared (NIR) from the recently updated sample of SNe Ia in nearby galaxies with distances measured via Cepheid period-luminosity relations by the SHOES project. We collect public near-infrared photometry of up to 19 calibrator SNe Ia and further 57 SNe Ia in the Hubble flow ($z>0.01$), and directly measure their peak magnitudes in the $J$ and $H$ band by Gaussian processes and spline interpolation. Calibrator peak magnitudes together with Cepheid-based distances are used to estimate the average absolute magnitude in each band, while Hubble-flow SNe are used to constrain the zero-point intercept of the magnitude-redshift relation. Our baseline result of $H_0$ is $72.3\pm1.4$ (stat) $\pm1.4$ (syst) km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ in the $J$ band and $72.3\pm1.3$ (stat) $\pm1.4$ (syst) km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ in the $H$ band, where the systematic uncertainties include the standard deviation of up to 21 variations of the analysis, the 0.7\% distance scale systematic from SHOES Cepheid anchors, a photometric zeropoint systematic, and a cosmic variance systematic. Our final measurement represents a measurement with a precision of 2.8\% in both bands. The variant with the largest change in $H_0$ is when limiting the sample to SNe from CSP and CfA programmes, noteworthy because these are the best calibrated, yielding $H_0\sim75$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ in both bands. We demonstrate stretch and reddening corrections are still useful in the NIR to standardize SN Ia NIR peak magnitudes. Based on our results, in order to improve the precision of the $H_0$ measurement with SNe Ia in the NIR in the future, we would need to increase the number of calibrator SNe Ia, be able to extend the Hubble-Lema\^itre diagram to higher-z, and include standardization procedures to help reducing the NIR intrinsic scatter., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. We present the discovery of a 4 kpc molecular gas lane in the Cygnus A host galaxy, using ALMA CO 2-1 observations. The gas lane is oriented roughly perpendicular to the projected radio jet axis. The CO emission generally follows the clumpy dust lanes seen in HST I-band images. The total molecular gas mass is $30\times 10^8$ M$_\odot$ for Milky Way type clouds, and $3.6 \times 10^8$ M$_\odot$ for starburst conditions. There is a velocity change from the northern to southern CO peaks of about $\pm 175$~km~s$^{-1}$, and an apparently smooth velocity gradient between the peaks, although the emission in the central region is weak. In the inner $\sim 0.5"$ projected distance from the radio core, comparison of the CO velocities to those observed for H$_2$ 2.1218 $\mu$m emission shows higher velocities for the vibrationally excited warm molecular gas than the cooler CO 2-1 line emitting gas at similar projected radii. A possible explanation for these different projected velocities at a given radius is that the cooler CO gas is distributed in a clumpy ring at radius $\sim 1.5"$ to $2"$, while the warm H$_2$ 2.12$\mu$m emitting gas is interior to this ring. Of course, the current data cannot rule-out a clumpy, amorphous molecular gas distribution linearly distributed perpendicular to the radio jet axis. In this paper we compare the Boltzmann distribution with a modified Boltzmann distribution, that results from an It\^o-process considering thermal equilibrium of a Brownian particle with coordinate dependent diffusion, in the light of an existing experiment. The experiment was reported in 1994 by Faucheux and Libchaber. The experiment made use of direct tracking of diffusion of Brownian particles near a wall. Results of this experiment allows us to compare the Boltzmann and the modified Boltzmann distribution without making use of any adjustable parameter. A comparison of these two distributions with the experimental results lends support to the consideration of thermodynamic equilibrium of a Brownian particle with coordinate-dependent diffusion to be an It\^o-process., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures
