Abstract

Companies receive numerous customer inquiries and regulatory requirements while attempting to offer new services to enhance sustainability, leading in total to an increase in the number of product-related requirements. Digital Twins serve as enablers for meeting these requirements, whereas new challenges arise for companies through the introduction of Digital Twins. Digital Twins represent an order-specific configuration and must be structured differently according to requirements and thus as modularly as possible. This paper aims to provide a systemic approach with a concept for a Modular Digital Twin for generating and exploiting Product Sustainability Information to leverage sustainability potentials towards Service-oriented Business Models. The approach is concretised by means of a selected use case regarding energy-efficient production control of an automated model factory. We can show with this use case that the systemic approach with the concept of a Modular Digital Twin is applicable for energy consumption of machinery motors' simulation and for the calculation of an optimised motor speed. Abstract

The Internet of Behaviours (IoB) is a network designed and used for replicating, understanding, predicting, and influencing human behaviour through data analytics. This study aims to advance our understanding of how the IoB will impact supply chain and operations management (SCOM). Based on a combination of the existing IoB frameworks with industrial Metaverse and digital supply chain twins, we propose a framework for IoB in SCOM encompassing management, organisation, and technology dimensions. We conclude that the IoB will impact a multitude of SCOM areas such as supply chain design, demand forecasting, sales and operations planning, distribution and transportation, inventory and production management, sourcing strategy and purchasing, vehicle routeing, supply chain resilience and sustainability. We offer a structured future research agenda pointing to new research questions and topics stemming from IoB-driven real-time visibility, data analytics, and remote control. Methodology of SCOM can also be enriched by the IoB through a combination of artificial intelligence and digital technology with operations research and behavioural operations management. Abstract

Digital Twin (DT) is a concept of growing interest, driven by the technological advancements related to Industry 4.0. DT combines innovative technologies to create a virtual model replicating the physical system and allowing bi-directional data flow. However, to use DTs in support of decision-making, it is essential to have trust in the model and all components of the DT throughout its development. Verification and Validation (V&V) have traditionally been employed to assess models' credibility, providing a venue for the development of trust. Therefore, V&V are essential foundations for developing DTs that can support decisions in real-world environments. Through a systematic literature review, this research investigated whether and how researchers are employing V&V in DTs for manufacturing applications. It was concluded that very little research was reported to have performed both verification and validation of the developed DTs. The study also examined the most commonly used V&V techniques and explored their relationship with DT capability level and application areas. It was concluded that there is a lack of standard procedures to conduct V&V and a lack of agreement on the V&V objectives. This research uncovers the main challenges to verifying and validating DTs and future research directions to develop trusted DTs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
