We study the Josephson effect in a superconductor--ferromagnet--superconductor (SFS) junction with ferromagnetic domains of non-collinear magnetization. As a model for our study we consider a diffusive junction with two ferromagnetic domains along the junction. The superconductor is assumed to be close to the critical temperature $T_c$, and the linearized Usadel equations predict a sinusoidal current-phase relation. We find analytically the critical current as a function of domain lengths and of the angle between the orientations of their magnetizations. As a function of those parameters, the junction may undergo transitions between 0 and $\pi$ phases. We find that the presence of domains reduces the range of junction lengths at which the $\pi$ phase is observed. For the junction with two domains of the same length, the $\pi$ phase totally disappears as soon as the misorientation angle exceeds $\pi/2$. With the use of Gutzwiller-projected variational states, we study the renormalization of the current carried by the quasiparticles in high-temperature superconductors and of the quasiparticle spectral weight. The renormalization coefficients are computed by the variational Monte Carlo technique, under the assumption that quasiparticle excitations may be described by Gutzwiller-projected BCS quasiparticles. We find that the current renormalization coefficient decreases with decreasing doping and tends to zero at zero doping. The quasiparticle spectral weight Z_+ for adding an electron shows an interesting structure in k space, which corresponds to a depression of the occupation number k just outside the Fermi surface. The perturbative corrections to those quantities in the Hubbard model are also discussed., 9 pages, 9 figures

Gutzwiller-projected (GP) wave functions have been widely used for describing spin-liquid physics in frustrated magnets and in high-temperature superconductors. Such wave functions are known to represent states of the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) type. In the present work I discuss the RVB structure of a GP singlet superconducting state with nodes in the spectrum. The resulting state for the undoped spin system may be described in terms of the "path integral" over loop coverings of the lattice, thus extending the known construction for RVB states. The problem of the topological order in GP states may be reformulated in terms of the statistical behavior of loops. The simple example of the projected d-wave state on the square lattice demonstrates that the statistical behavior of loops is renormalized in a nontrivial manner by the projection., 6 pages, 4 figures, some numerical data added

We study the effect of spin-flip scattering on the density of states in a long diffusive S-N junction with transparent interface. We calculate the critical value of the spin-flip scattering rate at which the minigap closes and give the dependence of the minigap on the spin-flip rate. For the system we consider, the minigap and the critical spin-flip rate have the scale of the Thouless energy, and not of the superconducting gap.

The energy gap in the Rokhsar-Kivelson dimer model on the triangular lattice is computed by the classical Monte Carlo method. The lowest excitations are identified as ${Z}_{2}$ vortices (visons), and their energy is computed as a function of the momentum.

Using Gutzwiller-projected wave functions, I estimate the ground-state energy of the t-J model for several variational states relevant for high-temperature cuprate superconductors. The results indicate antiferromagnetism and phase separation at low doping both in the superconducting state and in the staggered-flux normal state proposed for the vortex cores. While phase separation in the underdoped superconducting state may be relevant for the stripe formation mechanism, the results for the normal state suggest that similar charge inhomogeneities may also appear in vortex cores up to relatively high doping values., 4 pages, 3 figures, reference added

A normal (non-superconducting) ground state of the t-J model may be variationally approximated by a Gutzwiller-projected wave function. Within this approximation, at small hole doping near half-filling, the normal state favors staggered-flux ordering. Such a staggered-flux state may occur in vortex cores of underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors. From comparing the energies of the staggered-flux state and of the superconducting state, we numerically obtain the condensation energy. Extracting the superfluid density directly from the projected superconducting wave function, we can also estimate the coherence length at zero temperature., 5 pages, 4 figures

As simulation techniques are maturing, new connection between previously separate fields appear. We present numerical simulations on the quantum dimer model. They show that this model, originally derived as effective model for the low-energy physics of frustrated Ising models, has the right properties to be used in a physical realization of topologically protected quantum bits. A topologically protected quantum bit has the advantage of being passively stable against decoherence and thus does not require error correction schemes

Gutzwiller projection allows a construction of an assortment of variational wave functions for strongly correlated systems. For quantum spin S=1/2 models, Gutzwiller-projected wave functions have resonating-valence-bond structure and may represent states with fractional quantum numbers for the excitations. Using insights obtained from field-theoretical descriptions of fractionalization in two dimensions, we construct candidate wave functions of fractionalized states by projecting specific superconducting states. We review and refine analytical results on the density of states in a long disordered superconductor - normal-metal - superconductor junction with transparent interfaces. Our analysis includes the behavior of the minigap near phase differences zero and PI across the junction, as well as the density of states at energies much larger than the minigap but much smaller than the superconducting gap., Comment: 4 pages

In disordered vortices in p-wave superconductors the two new random-matrix ensembles may be realized: B and DIII-odd (of so(2N + 1) and so(4N + 2)/u(2N + 1) matrices respectively). We predict these ensembles from an explicit analysis of the symmetries of Bogoliubov—de Gennes equations in three examples of vortices with different p-wave order parameters. A characteristic feature of the novel symmetry classes is a quasiparticle level at zero energy. Class B is realized when the time-reversal symmetry is broken, and class DIII-odd when the time-reversal symmetry is preserved. We also suggest that the main contribution to disordering the vortex spectrum comes from the distortion of the order parameter around impurities.

The supersymmetric technique is applied to computing the average spectral density near zero energy in the large-N limit of the random-matrix ensembles with zero eigenvalues: B, DIII-odd, and the chiral ensembles (classes AIII, BDI, and CII). As the size of a Josephson junction is reduced, charging effects become important and the superconducting phase across the link turns into a periodic quantum variable. Isolated Josephson junction arrays are described in terms of such periodic quantum variables and thus exhibit pronounced quantum interference effects arising from paths with different winding numbers (Aharonov-Casher effects). These interference effects have strong implications for the excitation spectrum of the array which are relevant in applications of superconducting junction arrays for quantum computing. The interference effects are most pronounced in arrays composed of identical junctions and possessing geometric symmetries; they may be controlled by either external gate potentials or by adding/removing charge to/from the array. Here we consider a loop of N identical junctions encircling one half superconducting quantum of magnetic flux. In this system, the ground state is found to be non-degenerate if the total number of Cooper pairs on the array is divisible by N, and doubly degenerate otherwise (after the stray charges are compensated by the gate voltages)., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Excitation spectrum of a half-quantum vortex in a p-wave superconductor contains a zero-energy Majorana fermion. This results in a degeneracy of the ground state of the system of several vortices. From the properties of the solutions to Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations in the vortex core we derive the non-abelian statistics of vortices identical to that for the Moore-Read (Pfaffian) quantum Hall state., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, REVTeX, epsf. Human cyclin T1 markedly stimulates tat-activation in rodent cells which are normally poorly responsive to the effects of Tat. This result suggests that there are likely to be critical differences in the murine and human cyclin T1 proteins. Here, we analyzed the role of the murine and human cyclin T1 proteins in addition to the human cyclin T2a and T2b proteins on regulating tat-activation. Only the human cyclin T1 protein efficiently formed a complex with Tat bound to TAR RNA. This difference in function was due to the presence of a cysteine residue in human cyclin T1 at position 261 rather than a tyrosine or asparagine residue which are found in the murine cyclin T1 protein and the human cyclin T2a and T2b proteins, respectively. A mouse cyclin T1 protein containing a substitution of tyrosine residue 261 with a cysteine residue, was able to interact with Tat and stimulate tat-transactivation in rodent cells. Likewise, substitution of a cysteine residue for an asparagine residue at position 260 of the cyclin T2a and T2b proteins also resulted in their ability to interact with Tat and stimulate tat-activation in rodent cells. The data indicate that a specific residue in the cyclin T proteins is required for their in vitro interaction with Tat and their ability to stimulate in vivo tat-activation.

Superconducting quantum point contacts are known to possess two subgap states per each propagating mode. In this note we compute the low-temperature relaxation rate of the upper subgap state into the lower one with the emission of an acoustic phonon. If the reflection in the contact is small, the relaxation time may become much longer than the characteristic lifetime of a bulk quasiparticle., REVTeX, 4 pages

We present a low-energy effective model for the charge degrees of freedom in two-leg t-J ladders. Starting from SU(2) mean-field theory, we exclude the spin degrees of freedom which have an energy gap. At low temperatures, the mean-field solution is the staggered-flux phase. For gapless charge excitations the effective theory is the Luther-Emery liquid. Our analysis is applicable at low doping and in the ``physical'' range of parameters $t/J\sim 3$ where there is only one massless mode in the charge sector and no massless modes in the spin sector. The Tat protein is a transcriptional activator which is required for efficient human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) gene expression Tat stimulates HIV-1 transcriptional elongation by increasing the processivity of RNA polymerase II. To address whether Tat-mediated effects on HIV-1 gene expression are due to modulation in the phosphorylation of the RNA polymerase II C-terminal domain (CTD), we developed a purification protocol to identify cellular kinases that are capable of binding to Tat and hyperphosphorylating the RNA polymerase II CTD. A 600 kDa protein complex with these properties was isolated, and specific components were identified using peptide microsequence analysis. This analysis indicated that proteins comprising the multi-subunit TFIIH complex, in addition to several novel factors, were associated with Tat using both in vitro and in vivo analysis. The Tat-associated kinase bound to the activation domain of Tat, and its ability to hyperphosphorylate RNA polymerase II was markedly stimulated by Tat. Furthermore, the addition of the Tat-associated kinase to in vitro transcription assays stimulated the ability of Tat to activate HIV-1 transcription. These results define a cellular kinase complex whose activity is modulated by Tat to result in activation of HIV-1 trancription.

One of several working groups established for this workshop was charged with examining results and methods associated with the UHECR energy spectrum. We summarize the results of our discussions, which include a better understanding of the analysis choices made by groups and their motivation. We find that the energy spectra determined by the larger experiments are consistent in normalization and shape after energy scaling factors are applied. Those scaling factors are within systematic uncertainties in the energy scale, and we discuss future work aimed at reducing these systematics. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2013., 0, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The Telescope Array (TA) collaboration has measured the energy spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays with primary energies above 1.6 x 10^(18) eV. This measurement is based upon four years of observation by the surface detector component of TA. The spectrum shows a dip at an energy of 4.6 x 10^(18) eV and a steepening at 5.4 x 10^(19) eV which is consistent with the expectation from the GZK cutoff. We present the results of a technique, new to the analysis of ultra-high energy cosmic ray surface detector data, that involves generating a complete simulation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays striking the TA surface detector. The procedure starts with shower simulations using the CORSIKA Monte Carlo program where we have solved the problems caused by use of the "thinning" approximation. We search for ultra-high energy photons by analyzing geometrical properties of shower fronts of events registered by the Telescope Array surface detector. By making use of an event-by-event statistical method, we derive upper limits on the absolute flux of primary photons with energies above 1019 eV, 1019.5 eV and above 1020 eV based on the three years data from Telescope Array surface detector (May 2008 – May 2011). We report the results of down-going neutrino search based on the analysis of very inclined events.

We study counting statistics of electric current pumped by pulses of an external field. The fluctuations depend on the pulse shape, and can be minimized by choosing the pulse shape properly. For an optimal pulse shape, the fluctuations are reduced to the {\it dc} level, i.e., they do not depend on the duty cycle of the signal. We develop an approach that allows to calculate all counting statistics for various driving fields, optimal and non-optimal. The statistics depend in an interesting way on the analytic structure of the field time dependence, and display an analogy with coherent states and instantons., Comment: 21 pages, RevTeX 3.0, 3 figures by request

Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard equations for twisted conformal blocks on compact Riemann surfaces with marked points are written explicitly in a general projective structure in terms of correlation functions in the theory of twisted b-c systems. For nonlinear sigma-models in the unitary symmetry class, the non-linear target space can be parameterized with cubic polynomials. This choice of coordinates has been known previously as the Dyson-Maleev parameterization for spin systems, and we show that it can be applied to a wide range of sigma-models. The practical use of this parameterization includes simplification of diagrammatic calculations (in perturbative methods) and of algebraic manipulations (in non-perturbative approaches). We illustrate the use and specific issues of the Dyson-Maleev parameterization with three examples: the Keldysh sigma-model for time-dependent random Hamiltonians, the supersymmetric sigma-model for random matrices, and the supersymmetric transfer-matrix technique for quasi-one-dimensional disordered wires. We demonstrate that nonlinear sigma-models of unitary-like symmetry classes C and B/D also admit the Dyson-Maleev parameterization., Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure

We revisit the problem of diffusive proximity systems involving superconductors and normal metals (or ferromagnets) with magnetic disorder. On the length scales much larger than its correlation length, the effect of sufficiently weak magnetic disorder may be incorporated as a local spin-flip term in the Usadel equations. We derive this spin-flip term in the general case of a three-dimensional disordered Zeeman-type field with an arbitrary correlation length. Three different regimes may be distinguished: pointlike impurities (the correlation length is shorter than the Fermi wavelength), medium-range disorder (the correlation length between the Fermi wavelength and the mean free path), and long-range disorder (the correlation length longer than the mean free path). We discuss the relations between these three regimes by using the three overlapping approaches: the Usadel equations, the non-linear sigma model, and the diagrammatic expansion. The arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays appear to be approximately isotropically distributed over the whole sky, but the last-generation UHECR detector arrays, the Pierre Auger Observatory (Auger) and the Telescope Array (TA), have detected thousands of events, allowing us to study small deviations from isotropy. So far, Auger has detected a large-scale anisotropy consistent with a $\sim 6.5\%$ dipole moment in the distribution of cosmic rays with $E > 8$~EeV, and both collaborations have reported indications for smaller-scale anisotropies at higher energies. On the other hand, neither array has full-sky coverage, the Auger field of view being limited to declinations $\delta < +45^\circ$ and the TA one to $\delta > -16^\circ$. Searches for anisotropies with full-sky coverage thus require combining data from both arrays. A working group with members from both collaborations has been established for this task. Since even a minor systematic error in the energy determinations at either of the arrays could result in a sizeable spurious anisotropy along the north--south axis, we devised a method to cross-calibrate the energy scales of the two experiments with respect to each other by using events in a declination band within the intersection of their fields of view. The Telescope Array Experiment has observed an indication of intermediate-scale anisotropy in the UHECR arrival directions, called the Hotspot, with E > 57 EeV around the Ursa Major using the first 5-year data during a period between May 2008 and May 2013 collected by the TA surface detector array. The chance probability of this hotspot in an isotropic cosmic-ray sky was calculated to be 3.4s (post trial). We report on an exhaustive investigation of the dynamical dimer-dimer correlations in imaginary time for the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice using the Green's function Monte Carlo method. We show in particular that soft modes develop upon reducing the dimer-dimer repulsion, indicating the presence of a second-order phase transition into an ordered phase with broken translational symmetry. We further investigate the nature of this ordered phase, for which a 12-site unit cell has been previously proposed, with the surprising result that significant Bragg peaks are only present at two of the three high-symmetry points consistent with this unit cell. We attribute the absence of a detectable peak to its small magnitude due to the nearly uniform internal structure of the 12-site crystal cell., 6 pages, 8 figures

We study a diffusive superconductor--ferromagnet--superconductor (SFS) junction with in-plane ferromagnetic domains. Close to the superconducting transition temperature, we describe the proximity effect in the junction with the linearized Usadel equations. We find that properties of such a junction depend on the size of the domains relative to the magnetic coherence length. In the case of large domains, the junction exhibits transitions to the $\pi$ state, similarly to a single-domain SFS junction. In the case of small domains, the magnetization effectively averages out, and the junction is always in the zero state, similarly to a superconductor--normal metal--superconductor (SNS) junction. In both those regimes, the influence of domain walls may be approximately described as an effective spin-flip scattering. We also study the inhomogeneous distribution of the local current density in the junction. Close to the 0--$\pi$ transitions, the directions of the critical current may be opposite in the vicinity of the domain wall and in the middle of the domains., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We explicitly show that the Rokhsar-Kivelson dimer model on the triangular lattice is a liquid with topological order. Using the Pfaffian technique, we prove that the difference in local properties between the two topologically degenerate ground states on the cylinders and on the tori decreases exponentially with the system size.
