Abstract

The effect of clonidine (0.15 mg i.v.) on circulating GH, glucagon and glucose concentrations was measured in six normal subjects. GH and glucose increased but glucagon secretion remained unchanged. These data indicate that in man clonidine-induced GH secretion is not mediated by a stimulatory effect of clonidine on glucagon secretion and that alpha-adrenergic mechanisms have little role in the regulation of basal glucagon secretion.

182. Full 3D Strain Measurement by Digital Volume Correlation From X-Ray Computed and Optical Scanning Tomographic Images.

Abstract

Currently, the determination of mechanical data fields during a loading is generally performed by non-contact optical techniques like mark tracking or Digital Image Correlation techniques. However, these methods are only surface measurement techniques and even if we add the measurement of out-plan displacements, we can't calculate all the three-dimensional strain components. To obtain the full 3D strain tensor, DIC techniques [1] have been extended to Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) [2,3,4,5]. So we are able to investigate 3D mechanical phenomena in the core of materials or structures without hypothesis nor using numerical simulation. DVC allows the measurement of 3D displacement by considering a 3D material transformation which can be assimilated at a pure translation or at a translation combined with a local gradient. This technique needs volume images which contain a 3D random distribution of grey levels. In order to obtain a subvoxel accuracy, a trilinear interpolation of the grey levels is used and the final positions are calculated with an optimization of a correlation coefficient, In this study, we present 3D measurements made by images from X-ray computed tomography and optical scanning tomography. Abstract

Generally in mechanics, 3D problems can be analysed from simulations by finite elements and the results can be compared with the measurements obtained on the surface of the specimen. However, in the case of structures with complex geometries or specific loads, it can be necessary to determine experimentally the 3D strain field to validate the numerical approach in the whole volume. We present two techniques we have developed to observe 3D mechanical effects at the core of a specimen: the scattered light photoelasticity and the optical scanning tomography coupled to Digital Volume Correlation (DVC). Abstract

The literature contains many studies on assessment of DIC uncertainties, particularly in the ultimate error regime, when the shape function used to describe the material transformation perfectly matches the actual transformation. For pure sub-pixel translations, bias and random errors obtained for experimental or synthetic images show more complex evolution versus the fractional part of displacement than those predicted by the existing theoretical models. Indeed, small deviations arise, mainly around integer values of imposed displacements for noisy images, and they are interpreted as the unrepresentativeness of the underlying hypotheses of the theoretical models. In a first step, differences between imposed and measured displacements are analysed: random error is independent of fractional displacement, and systematic error does not decrease for values close to integer displacements whatever the noise level. Therefore, new prediction models are proposed based on the analysis of identified phenomena from synthetic speckle-pattern 8-bit images. The statistical approach used in this paper generalizes the methods proposed in the literature and mimics the experimental methodology usually used for displacement measurements performed in different subsets in the same image. Two closed-form expressions for the systematic and random errors and a linear interpolation scheme are developed. These models, depending only on image properties and the imposed displacement, are built with a very limited number of parameters.
