In the framework of the HERA Luminosity Upgrade Project it is foreseen to move the final focus quadrupole magnets of the proton machine 16 m closer to the interaction region. As the electrons must not be affected by these magnets, the beam pipes for electrons and protons have to be well separated at these magnets. This implies rather sharp bends with bending radii down to 360 m for the electron orbit in the interaction region. At an electron energy of 30 GeV and a beam current of 58 mA these bends cause a high level of synchrotron radiation. The synchrotron radiation will be guided through the interaction region and will be absorbed far downstream at low power densities. However, it is unavoidable to stop parts of the synchrotron radiation beam at high linear power densities of up to 2 kW/cm rather close to the interaction point where the electron and proton vacuum systems are separated. In order to protect the proton final focus magnet and the septum beam pipe from this synchrotron radiation, a high power synchrotron radiation absorber was designed. This absorber not only has to withstand the heat load of the synchrotron radiation, but it also has to be designed to minimize the backward scattering of the radiation, because these scattered photons might hit sensitive detector components in the interaction region. This paper will first give an overview of the geometry of the interaction region with special emphasis on the synchrotron radiation. Then the geometrical and thermal requirements for the high power absorber will be described and finally the layout of the absorber will be presented.

Events containing an isolated prompt photon with high transverse energy, together with a balancing jet, have been observed for the first time in photoproduction at HERA.The data were taken with the ZEUS detector, in a $\gamma p$ centre of mass energy range 120--250 GeV. The fraction of the incoming photon energy participating in the production of the prompt photon and the jet, $x_\gamma$, shows a strong peak near unity, consistent with LO QCD Monte Carlo predictions. In the transverse energy and pseudorapidity range $5\le \eTg < 10$ GeV, $-0.7 \le \eta^\gamma < 0.8$, $\eTj\ge 5$ GeV, and $-1.5\le \eta^{jet}\le 1.8$, with $\xgO > 0.8,$ the measured cross section is $15.3 \pm 3.8 \pm 1.8 pb$, in good agreement with a recent NLO calculation., Comment: 22 pages including 8 figures

Several secretagogues were used in this study, including those which enhance intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) production, as well as others which elevate intracellular Ca2+ activity and are known to increase Cl− secretion in the intact colon and in colonic carcinoma cell lines. They were examined with respect to their effects on electrophysiological properties in isolated rabbit distal colonic crypts. Crypts were dissected manually and perfused in vitro. Transepithelial voltage (Vte), transepithelial resistance (Rte), membrane voltage across the basolateral membrane (Vbl), and fractional basolateral membrane resistance (FRbl), were estimated. Basolateral prostaglandin E2 (PGE2, ⩾0.1 μmol/l), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP, 1 nmol/l) and adenosine (0.1 mmol/l) induced an initial depolarisation and a secondary partial repolarisation of (Vbl). In the case of adenosine, the initial depolarization of (Vbl) was by 31±2 mV (n=47).Rte fell significantly from 16.4±3.6 to 14.2±3.7 Ω·cm2 (n= 6), andFRblincreased significantly from 0.11±0.02 to 0.51±0.10 (n=6). In the second phase the repolarisation of (Vbl) amounted 11±2 mV (n=47) and a steadystate (Vbl) of −51±2 mV (n=47) was reached.Rte fell further and significantly to a steady-state value of 12.4±3.8 Ω·cm2 (n=6) andFRbl fell significantly to 0.42±0.13 (n=6). In 30% of the experiments, a transient hyperpolarisation of (Vbl) by 8±2 mV (n=14) was seen during wash out of adenosine. In the presence of adenosine, but not under control conditions, lowering of luminal Cl− concentration from 120 to 32 mmol/l depolarised (Vbl) significantly by 8±1 mV (n=9). Basolateral ATP and ADP (0.1 mmol/l) led to a short initial depolarisation followed by a sustained and significant hyperpolarisation by 6±2 mV (n=27) and 5±4 mV (n=8), respectively. Carbachol (CCH) hyperpolarised (Vbl) in a concentration-dependent manner. At 100 μmol/l (bath) the hyperpolarisation was by 14±2 mV (n=11) andFRbl fell slightly. Neurotensin (⩾10 nmol/l), isoproterenol (⩾10 μmol/l) and uridine 5′-triphosphate (UTP, 0.1 mmol/l) had no effect. It is concluded that PGE2, VIP and adenosine upregulate sequentially a luminal Cl− conductance and a basolateral K+ conductance by increasing intracellular cAMP concentration. Ca2+ mobilising hormones such as ATP, ADP, and CCH increase the basolateral K+ conductance, while the effect on luminal Cl− conductance appears to be very limited.

This paper reports the cross section measurements for the process ep $\rightarrow$ e~\jpsi~p for $Q^2 < 4$ GeV$^2$ at $\sqrt s = 296$ GeV, based on an integrated luminosity of about 0.5~pb$^{-1}$, using the ZEUS detector. The \jpsi~was detected in its $\rm e^{+}e^{-}$ and $\rm \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decay modes. The photoproduction cross section was measured to be $52^{ \ +7}_{-12}\pm 10$~nb at an average $\gamma$p centre of mass energy of 67 GeV and $71^{+13}_{-20}\pm 12$~nb at 114 GeV. The significant rise of the cross section compared to lower energy measurements is not in agreement with VDM models, but can be described by QCD inspired models if a rise in the gluon momentum density at low $x$ in the proton is assumed., Comment: 21 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded file

Charged particle production has been measured in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events using the ZEUS detector over a large range of $Q^2$ from 10 to $1280 {\rm\ GeV}^2$. The evolution with $Q$ of the charged multiplicity and scaled momentum has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. The data are used to study QCD \linebreak coherence effects in DIS and are compared with corresponding \ee~data in order to test the universality of quark fragmentation., 33 pages, latex, 8 figures appended as uuencoded file

Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction ep → jet + X at Q2 below 4 GeV2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb-1. These cross sections are given in the kinematic region 0.2 < y < 0.85, for jet pseudorapidities in the ep-laboratory range -1 < ηjet < 2 and refer to jets at the hadron level with a cone radius of one unit in the η - φ plane. These results correspond to quasi-real photoproduction at centre-of-mass energies in the range 130-270 GeV and, approximately, for jet pseudorapidities in the interval -3 < ηjet(γρ CMS) < 0. These measurements cover a new kinematic regime of the partonic structure of the photon, at typical scales up to ∼300 GeV2 and photon fractional momenta down to xγ ∼ 10-2. Leading logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo calculations, which include both resolved and direct processes and use the predictions of currently available parametrisations of the photon parton distributions, describe in general the shape and magnitude of the measured ηjet and ETjet distributions.

The exclusive production of $\rho^0$ mesons in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering has been studied using the ZEUS detector. Cross sections have been measured in the range $7 < Q^2 < 25$ GeV$^2$ for $\gamma^*p$ centre of mass (c.m.) energies from 40 to 130 GeV. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section exhibits a $Q^{-(4.2 \pm 0.8 ^{+1.4}_{-0.5})}$ dependence and both longitudinally and transversely polarised $\rho^0$'s are observed. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section rises strongly with increasing c.m. energy, when compared with NMC data at lower energy, which cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. The data are compared with perturbative QCD calculations where the rise in the cross section reflects the increase in the gluon density at low $x$. the gluon density at low $x$., Comment: 22 pages, latex, 4 figures appended

The aim of this study was to characterize ion conductances and carrier mechanisms of isolated in vitro perfused rabbit colonic crypts. Crypts were isolated from rabbit colon mucosa and mounted on a pipette system which allowed controlled perfusion of the lumen. In non-stimulated conditions basolateral membrane voltage (Vbl) was -65 +/- 1 mV (n = 240). Bath Ba2+ (1 mmol/l) and verapamil (0.1 mmol/l) depolarized Vbl by 21 +/- 2 mV (n = 7) and 31 +/- 1 (n = 4), respectively. Lowering of bath Cl- concentration hyperpolarized Vbl from -69 +/- 3 to -75 +/- 3 mV (n = 9). Lowering of luminal Cl- concentration did not change Vbl. Basolateral application of loop diuretics (furosemide, piretanide, bumetanide) had no influence on Vbl in non-stimulated crypts. Forskolin (10(-6) mol/l) in the bath depolarized Vbl by 29 +/- 2 mV (n = 54) and decreased luminal membrane resistance. In one-third of the experiments a spontaneous partial repolarization of Vbl was seen in the presence of forskolin. During forskolin-induced depolarization basolateral application of loop diuretics hyperpolarized Vbl significantly and concentration dependently with a potency sequence of bumetanide > piretanide > or = furosemide. Lowering bath Cl- concentration hyperpolarized Vbl. Lowering of luminal Cl- concentration from 120 to 32 mmol/l during forskolin-induced depolarization led to a further depolarization of Vbl by 7 +/- 2 mV (n = 10). We conclude that Vbl of rabbit colonic crypt cells is dominated by a K+ conductance. Stimulation of the cells by forskolin opens a luminal Cl- conductance. Basolateral uptake of Cl- occurs via a basolateral Na+:2Cl-:K+ cotransport system.

This paper presents our first measurement of the F 2 structure function in neutral-current, deep inelastic scattering using the ZEUS detector at HERA, the ep colliding beam facility at DESY. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 24.7 nb −1 . Results are presented for data in range of Q 2 from 10 GeV 2 to 4700 GeV 2 and Bjorken x down to 3.0 × 10 −4 . The F 2 structure function increases rapidly as x decreases.

This paper reports a search for excited electrons at the HERA electron-proton collider. In a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26 nb−, no evidence was found for any resonant state decaying into e−γ, νW− or e−Z0. Limits on the coupling strength of an excited electron have been determined for masses between 45 and 225 GeV. This study also reports the observation of the wide-angle eγ Compton scattering process.

Pharmacomodulation of the torasemide molecule, a loop diuretic inhibiting Na+ 2Cl− K+ co-transport in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henlé has been performed in order to obtain new long-acting diuretics. The aim of this study was to decrease the metabolism of the drug and to slow down its rate of excretion by increasing its hydrophobicity. The present study describes the synthesis and the inhibitory potency of new torasemide derivatives in the bioassay system of the cortical thick ascending limb of rabbit. A correlation between the lipophilicity (log P') of these substances and their activity as inhibitors of the Na+ Cl− K+ co-transporter was observed. The present design led to compounds more active than torasemide. Structure-activity relationships permit us to propose an interaction model between torasemide derivatives and the Na+ 2Cl− K+ co-transport system of the cortical thick ascending limb.

The colonic carcinoma cell line HT29 was used to examine the influence of agonists increasing cytosolic cAMP and Ca2+ activity on the conductances and the cell membrane voltage (Vm). HT29 cells were grown on glass cover-slips. Cells were impaled by microelectrodes 4–10 days after seeding, when they had formed large plaques. In 181 impalements Vm was −51±1 mV. An increase in bath K+ concentration from 3.6 mmol/l to 18.6 mmol/l or 0.5 mmol/l Ba2+ depolarized the cells by 10±1 mV (n=49) or by 9±2 mV (n=3), respectively. A decrease of bath Cl− concentration from 145 to 30 mmol/l depolarized the cells by 11±1 mV (n=24). Agents increasing intracellular cAMP such as isobutylmethylxanthine (0.1 mmol/l), forskolin (10 μmol/l) or isoprenaline (10 μmol/l) depolarized the cells by 6±1 (n=13), 15±3 (n=5) and 6±2 (n=3) mV, respectively. In hypoosmolar solutions (225 mosmol/l) cells depolarized by 9±1 mV (n=6). Purine and pyrimidine nucleotides depolarized the cells dose-dependently with the following potency sequence: UTP > ATP > ITP > GTP > TIP > CTP = 0. The depolarization by ATP was stronger than that by ADP and adenosine. The muscarinic agonist carbachol led to a sustained depolarization by 27±6 mV (n=5) at 0.1 mmol/l, and to a transient depolarization by 12±4 mV (n=5) at 10 μmol/l. Neurotensin depolarized with a half-maximal effect at around 5 nmol/l. The depolarization induced by nucleotides and neurotensin was transient and followed by a hyperpolarization. We confirm that HT29 cells possess Cl−- and K+-conductive pathways. The Cl− conductance is regulated by intracellular cAMP level, cytosolic Ca2+ activity, and cell swelling. The K+ conductance in HT29 cells is regulated by intracellular Ca2+ activity.

Classification of diuretics is based on their site and mechanism of action in the nephron. The most frequently used substances comprise 1. the mostly proximally acting carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAI); 2. the loop diuretics (LD); 3. the early distally acting thiazides (TZ); and 4. the K+ sparing diuretics (KS) acting in the distal tubule. CAI such as acetazolamide inhibit the dehydration of H2CO3 at the luminal membrane, the hydration of CO2 within the proximal tubule cell and the exit of HCO-3 out of the cell. As a result of this proximal reabsorption of HCO-3 is reduced, a slight diuresis and saluresis is induced. The enhanced urinary excretion of HCO-3 will cause a metabolic acidosis. LD inhibit the Na+2Cl-K+ carrier in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (TAL). This produces a marked diuresis and saluresis which is accompanied by enhanced Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and acid excretion. TZ inhibit the Na+Cl- cotransporter in the early distal tubule. The diuresis is less marked than that induced by LD but the renal losses of K+ are comparable. KS inhibit Na+ channels present in the luminal membrane of the cortical collecting tubule. This leads to a very limited diuresis, but a marked attentuation of renal K+ losses. All diuretics act by inhibiting the admission of Na+ (LD, TZ, KS) or HCO-3 (CAI) into the cell. Their organotropy is merely due to the fact that they are concentrated in tubule fluid by volume reabsorption and by proximal tubule secretion.

In this study we examined by impalement techniques properties of the macroscopic K+ conductances in the luminal and basolateral membrane of principal cells from isolated perfused cortical collecting ducts (CCD) of the rat. Both membranes possess a dominating K+ conductance. Compared to their behaviour with K+, both membranes appear much less permeable to NH 4 + and Rb+, and the K+ conductances of both membranes are inhibited by these cations. In light of these findings, it is very unlikely that significant amounts of NH 4 + , which is secreted in the CCD, cross the principal cells as NH 4 + . Several inhibitors with known effects on K+ channels in patch-clamp studies have been examined. Tetraethylammonium, which inhibits the excised K+ channels of these cells, has no effect on the macroscopic K+ conductances of either membrane. Verapamil, which inhibits the K+ channels in the luminal membrane, acts predominantly on the basolateral membrane K+ conductance in the intact tubule. Therefore, some of the macroscopic properties of the K+ conductances are distinct from those of single channels thus far observed in patchclamp studies.

Arylaminobenzoates were examined in rabbit colon mounted in an Ussing chamber. The open-circuit transepithelial voltage (V te) and resistance (R te) were measured and the equivalent short-circuit current (I SC=V te/ R te) was calculated. After serosal (s) and mucosal (m) addition of indomethacin (1 μmol/l) I SC was −71±11 (n = 118) μA/cm2. Amiloride (0.1 mmol/l, m) inhibited this current and reversed the polarity to + 32±4 (n=118) μA/cm2. In the presence of amiloride and indomethacin, prostaglandin E2 (1 μmol/l, s), known to induce Cl− secretion, generated an I SC of -143 ± 8 (n = 92) μA/cm2. The arylaminobenzoate and Cl− channel blocker 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino)-benzoate (NPPB) reduced I SC reversibly with a half-maximal inhibition (IC50) at approximately 0.35 mmol/l and 0.2 mmol/l for mucosal and serosal application respectively. To test whether the poor effect was caused by mucus covering the luminal surface, dose/response curves of the mucosal effect were repeated after several pretreatments. Acidic pH on the mucosal side reduced IC50 to approximately 0.1 mmol/l. A similar effect was observed after N-acetyl-l-cysteine (m) preincubation. Pretreatment with N-acetyl-l-cysteine (m) and carbachol (s), in order to exhaust mucus secretion, and l-homocysteine (m) were more effective and reduced IC50 to approximately 50 μmol/l. To test whether this effect of NPPB was caused by non-specific effects, the two enantiomers of 5-nitro-2-(+/−1-phenylethylamino)-benzoate were tested of which only the (+) form inhibited the Cl− conductance in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (TAL). In the present study the (+) enantiomer inhibited significantly more strongly than the (−) form. This suggests that the inhibitory effect of NPPB, even though it requires rather high concentrations, is probably due to Cl− channel inhibition. For other arylaminobenzoates the sequence of potencies was different from that determined for the TAL. The present data indicate that substances that have been designed to block the Cl− conductance of the TAL segment also inhibit reversibly but with much lower affinity the PGE2-induced Cl− secretion in rabbit colon.

This review will address several recent findings regarding the interaction of so called loop diuretics of the furosemide type with the Na+2Cl−K+ cotransporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (TAL): (i) The organ selectivity of these transport inhibitors is caused by their secretion by the proximal tubule leading to an increase in their luminal concentration. We have examined whether probenecid, a selective inhibitor of proximal organic anion secretion, reduces the diuretic effect of known loop diuretics. We show that all compounds tested: furosemide (FUR), piretanide (PIR), bumetanide (BUM), and azosemide (AZO) lose part of their diuretic effect when administered in the presence of probenecid. (ii) Previously, we have shown that all loop diuretics of the furosemide type require an acidic group for binding to the Na+2Cl−K+ cotransporter. This is a carboxylate group in the case of FUR, PIR, and BUM; a tetrazolic acid group in the case of AZO; and a sulfonylurea group in the case of torasemide (TOR). Now we show that TOR-derivates with an even less acidic sulfonylurea group (pKa > 8) are still very potent inhibitors of the Na+2C1−K+ cotransporter. Experiments at various pH values indicate that, even for these substances, it is only the anionic form which inhibits the Na+2C1−K+ cotransporter. (iii) Most of the loop diuretics, with the exception of TOR, are rather hydrophilic (FUR, PIR, BUM, AZO). Now we have examined whether one can design compounds which sustain their inhibitory effect on the Na+2C1−K+ cotransporter, although they are highly lipophilic. We found that cyclo-alkyl substitutions at the tolyl-and sulfonylurea-moieties of TOR led to highly lipophilic compounds with very high affinity for the Na+2C1−K+ cotransporter. (iv) Previous data suggested that loop diuretics bind to the Na+2Cl−K+ cotransporter at the extracellular side of the luminal membrane. Now we have designed impermeable macromolecular derivatives of PIR and we show that these macromolecular probes inhibit the Na+2Cl−K+ cotransporter as well as PIR. (v) Previous data indicated that loop diuretics interrupt the macula densa feedback mechanism, and circumstantial evidence suggested that the uptake of Cl− and/or Na+ by macula densa cells may occur via the Na+2Cl−K+ cotransporter. Now we show that macula densa cells sense the luminal NaCl concentration via FUR sensitive Na+2C1−K+ cotransport.

Production of charmed mesons in γγ-interactions at PETRA energies has been observed in the TASSO detector. Cross sections for inclusive D*± and {Mathematical expression} production have been measured. Neutral and charged meson pairs are estimated to be produced with comparable cross sections, and their sum seems to account for a sizeable fraction of σtot(γγ→hadrons) near the {Mathematical expression} threshold. © 1990 Springer-Verlag.

Subjet distributions were measured in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 81.7 pb-1. Jets were identified using the kT cluster algorithm in the laboratory frame. Subjets were defined as jet-like substructures identified by a reapplication of the cluster algorithm at a smaller value of the resolution parameter ycut. Measurements of subjet distributions for jets with exactly two subjets for ycut=0.05 are presented as functions of observables sensitive to the pattern of parton radiation and to the colour coherence between the initial and final states. Perturbative QCD predictions give an adequate description of the data., 48 pages, 26 figures

Production of theη c meson ine + e − quasireal two photon collisions has been looked for in three channels. The data were obtained from an integrated luminosity of 189 pb−1. Anη c signal is observed in two decay modes (K 0 K ±π∓,π+π-π+π-) with a combined statistical significance of 3.5 standard deviations. Using the knownη c branching ratios to these channels and toK + K -π+π- the combined partialη c width to γγ isΓ γγ(η c ). The first error is statistical, and the second one includes the systematic and branching ratio errors. Calculated as an upper limit we obtainΓ γγ(η c ) (95% C.L., including the systematic error).

The reaction e + e − →e + e − η ′(958) has been observed by detecting the final state π + π − γ . The two-photon width of the η′ has been measured to be Γ ( η ′→ γγ ) = 5.1±0.4±0.7 keV. A search for the ι (1440) has been made in the ϱ 0 γ final state. An upper limit has been obtained for the product Γ ( ι (1440) → γ ) gg ), B ( ι → ϱ 0 γ )

Hard processes in photon-photon collisions are studied using high statistics data without requiring an electron tag. A high yield of hadrons with p t in the range 1.5–3.0 GeV/ c is observed. This yield exceeds the expectation of the Born term by a factor of four.

The large amount of data accumulated by the TASSO detector at 35 GeV c.m. energy has been compared with the predictions of the latest generation of perturbative QCD+fragmentation models. By adjustment of the arbitrary parameters of these models, a very good description of the global properties of hadronic events was obtained. No one model gave the best description of all features of the data, each model being better than the others for some observables and worse in other quantities. We interpret these results in terms of the underlying QCD and hadronisation schemes. The trends of the data across the energy range 12.0≦W≦41.5 GeV are generally well reproduced by the models with the parameters optimised at 35 GeV.

We have observed τ pair production at average CM energies of 13.9, 22.3, 34.5 and 43.1 GeV. The cross-sections are consistent with QED, the cut off parameters beingΛ +>161 GeV andΛ −169 GeV (95% CL). The topological branching fraction of the τ to 1 charged particle,B 1, is 0.847±0.011 (stat) −0.013 +0.016 (syst) and no decays to 5 charged particles were observed resulting inB 5

The cross section for the process e+e-→π0+ anything has been measured at an average center of mass energy of 34.6 GeV for π0 energies between 0.7 and 17 GeV. The angular distribution for π0 energies larger than 2 GeV is of the form dσ/dΩ∼1+Acos2θ, with A=1.2±0.5. The ratio of π0 to π± production in the measured energy range is 2σ(π0)/(σ(π+)+σ(π-))=1.13±0.18 The form of the differential cross sections agrees within the errors. The mean π0 multiplicity is 5.8±0.9. © 1986 Springer-Verlag.

We report on inclusive production of Jψ (3.1)-mesons observed in e+e−-annihilation in the energy range s = 4.0–5.0 GeV. After substraction of the radiative tail of the ψ(3.7) direct production of the Jψ (3.1) is found to be in the order of 0.1% of the total hadronic cross section. No enhancements are seen at s = 4.03 GeV and 4.4 GeV. The level is in agreement with expectations from violation of the Zweig-rule.

New experimental results are presented on proton-proton elastic scattering at centre-of-mass energies square root s=23 GeV and square root s=62 GeV. The data are obtained using the Split Field Magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The absolute differential cross-sections show an energy-dependent behaviour. The position of the diffraction minimum changes from t=(-1.44+or-0.02) GeV /sup 2/ at 23 GeV to (-1.26+or-0.03) GeV/sup 2/ at 62 GeV. The cross- section at the second maximum is increasing with square root s. The connection of these observations with the hypothesis of 'geometrical scaling' is discussed. (8 refs).

We report on a study of inclusive production ofD *± mesons ine + e − annihilation at c.m. energies between 28 and 46.8 GeV using the TASSO detector at the PETRA storage ring. A hardD *± energy spectrum is measured with a maximum nearE D *± ≃0.6E beam. The measured cross section ratio $$(\sigma _{D^{* + } } + \sigma _{D^{* - } } )/\sigma _{\mu \mu } = 1.28 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.18$$ indicates thatD * production accounts for a large fraction of the observed charm production. Two complementary methods have been used to determine the forward-backward asymmetry of charm pair production due to electroweak interference. Combining both measurements the product of the axial vector couplings of the electron and the charm quark to the weak neutral current was determined to beg A e g A c =−(0.276±0.073), in agreement with the standard model prediction of −0.25. Using a sample of reconstructedD *± mesons, the relative strength of the strong interaction coupling of thec quark compared to that of an average of all flavours is measured as αs(c)/αs(all)=0.91±0.38±0.15, consistent with the coupling constant being flavour independent. An update of ourD 0 lifetime measurement is presented, based on a considerable increase in statistics, the final result being $$\tau _{D^0 = } (4.8 \pm _{0.9 - 0.7}^{1.0 + 0.5} )10^{ - 13} s$$ .

Exclusive production of proton-antiproton pairs by two photon scattering at CM energies between 2.0 GeV and 3.1 GeV has been measured with the TASSO detector at the e + e − storage ring PETRA. The angular distribution is flat within the accepted CM angular range | cos Θ ∗ |⩽0.7 . The integrated cross section (| cos Θ ∗ |⩽0.6) drops from about 4 nb at 2 GeV to less than 0.5 nb above 3 GeV. For the two-photon production of the η c (2984) and its subsequent decay into proton-antiproton the upper limit Γ(η c →γγ)· B (η c → p p ) keV (95% CL) is found.
