In our recent study we have determined two new spatially dependent nuclear PDF (nPDF) sets, EPS09s and EKS98s. With these, the hard-process cross-sections can be calculated in different centrality classes consistently with the globally analyzed nPDFs for the first time. The sets were determined by exploiting the $A$-systematics of the globally fitted nPDF sets, EPS09 and EKS98. For the spatial dependence of the nPDFs we used a power series ansatz in the nuclear thickness function $T_A$. In this flash talk we introduce the framework, and present our NLO EPS09s-based predictions for the nuclear modification factor in four centrality classes for inclusive neutral pion production in p+Pb collisions at the LHC and for inclusive prompt photon production in d+Au collisions at RHIC at midrapidity.

This Expression of Interest (EoI) describes the motivation for and the feasibility studies of a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment (LBNO) with a new conventional neutrino beamline facility (CN2PY). The beam will be aimed at a next generation deep-underground neutrino observatory comprising a double phase liquid argon (LAr) detector and a magnetized iron calorimeter, located at the Pyh\"asalmi (Finland) mine at a distance of 2300~km. The double phase LAr Large Electron Multiplier Time Projection Chamber (LAr LEM-TPC) is known to provide excellent tracking and calorimetry performance that can outperform other techniques. An initial 20~kton LAr fiducial volume, as considered here, comparable to the fiducial mass of SuperKamiokande and NOvA, offers a new insight and an increase in sensitivity reach for many physics channels. A magnetized iron calorimeter with muon momentum and charge determination collects an independent neutrino sample, and serves as a tail catcher for CERN beam events occurring in the LAr target. The long baseline physics objectives comprise the precise investigation of all flavor oscillations ($\nu_\mu\rightarrow \nu_\mu$, $\nu_\mu\rightarrow \nu_\tau$, $\nu_\mu\rightarrow \nu_e$) with neutrinos and antineutrinos, exploiting the energy spectrum information of the oscillation probability ($L/E$ method) in appearance and disappearance modes, to provide unambiguous sensitivity to oscillation parameters, and a stringent test of the 3-generation mixing. The existence of CP-violation will be tested explicitly, which is different from simply extracting the $\delta_{CP}$ violating phase from global fits of all available data. With an exposure of $2.25\times 10^{20}$~p.o.t. from the SPS at 400~GeV, a conclusive determination ($>5\sigma$~C.L.) of the neutrino mass hierarchy is possible for \emph{any} value of $\delta_{CP}$. Although limited by statistics in the initial configuration, the $L/E$ method also yields a clean measurement of the CP-violating phase. With $1\times 10^{21}$~p.o.t., the existence of CP-violation (CPV) can be demonstrated at the 90\%C.L. for $\sim 60\%$ of the $\delta_{CP}$ parameter space. This CPV-sensitivity is achievable in $\sim$12~years at the upgraded SPS. It improves further with the increased exposure resulting from longer running periods and/or an increase in beam power and far detector mass. With the chosen location in the deepest mine in Europe at $-1440$~m ($\sim$4000~m.w.e.), the already very large initial target mass provides an unique opportunity to observe new rare phenomena, independently of the CERN beam events. In the GeV range, evidence for Grand Unified Theories (GUT) can be searched for with nucleon decay signals. From 100~MeV to tens of GeV, the collection of thousands of atmospheric electron and muon neutrinos with good energy resolution and particle identification over a very large range of energies (SubGeV and MultiGeV) improves our understanding of this source and yields information on subleading oscillation effects, which provide additional and complementary sensitivity to the oscillation phenomenology including $\theta_{13}$, matter effects and possibly the CP-phase. At high energy, it allows an identification with high statistical significance and a study of $\nu_\tau$ appearance in atmospheric events. Below 100~MeV, neutrinos from a new galactic supernova burst would be recorded with large statistics, addressing the astrophysics of the supernova and neutrino flavor oscillations through the SN and Earth matter. Neutrinos from relic supernovae could also be potentially detected, depending on their flux and prevailing backgrounds. LBNO can also potentially detect as-of-yet unknown sources of astrophysical neutrinos, like for instance those that could arise from annihilation processes of WIMP particles in astrophysical objects, and study their flavor composition. The plan described so far is augmented with a concrete upgrade path to evolve towards an ultimate volume observatory by additional units of increasingly larger masses. With a three-fold increase in exposure (defined as the product neutrino beam power $\times$ far detector target mass), CPV becomes accessible at $>3\sigma$~C.L. for 75\% of the $\delta_{CP}$ parameter space, assuming that all systematic errors can be controlled below the 5\% level. The LBNO far site at 2300~km from CERN could also represent the first step towards a Neutrino Factory project based on the decays of muons in the straight sections of a storage ring. Based on the expertise present at CERN and in European and in international research groups, and building upon the results of several years of EU-funded design studies, we are confident that the technology for the beam and detectors is sufficiently mature to allow for an early start to realizing the facility. We are calling on CERN to promptly support and engage in the prototyping of the near and far detector components, to investigate options for campaigns of detector performance characterization and calibration with test beams in the North Area, and engage in a collaborative effort with the LBNO Collaboration that should lead to a full engineering design of the CN2PY beam and to an LBNO Proposal by the end of 2014.

By studying the Paschos-Wolfenstein (PW) ratio of deep inelastic $��{\rm Fe}$ and $\bar ��{\rm Fe}$ scattering cross sections, we show that it should be possible to explain the NuTeV $\sin ^2 ��_{\rm W}$ anomaly with quite conventional physics, by introducing mutually different nuclear modifications for the valence-$u$ and valence-$d$ quark distributions of the protons in iron. Keeping the EKS98 nuclear modifications for $u_V+d_V$ as a baseline, we find that some 20-30 % nuclear modifications to the $u_V$ and $d_V$ distributions account for the change induced in the PW ratio by the NuTeV-suggested increase $��\sin ^2 ��_{\rm W}=0.005$. We show that introduction of such nuclear modifications in $u_V$ and $d_V$ individually, does not lead into contradiction with the present global DGLAP analyses of the nuclear parton distributions, where deep inelastic $lA$ scattering data and Drell-Yan dilepton data from $pA$ collisions are used as constraints. We thus suggest that the NuTeV result serves as an important further constraint in pinning down the nuclear effects of the bound nucleon PDFs. We also predict that if the NuTeV anomaly is explained by this mechanism, the NOMAD experiment should see an increase in the weak mixing angle quite close to the NuTeV result., 17 pages, 7 figures

Due to asymptotic freedom, QCD is guaranteed to be accessible to perturbative methods at asymptotically high temperatures. However, in 1979 Linde has pointed out the existence of an "infrared wall", beyond which an infinite number of Feynman diagrams contribute. We study the hadron spectra in nearly central A+A collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in a broad transverse momentum range. We cover the low-pT spectra using longitudinally boost-invariant hydrodynamics with initial energy and net-baryon number densities from the perturbative QCD (pQCD)+saturation model. Buildup of the transverse flow and sensitivity of the spectra to a single decoupling temperature Tdec are studied. Comparison with RHIC data at sqrt[sNN]=130 and 200 GeV suggests a rather high value Tdec=150 MeV. The high-pT spectra are computed using factorized pQCD cross sections, nuclear parton distributions, fragmentation functions, and describing partonic energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma by quenching weights. Overall normalization is fixed on the basis of p+p̅ (p) data and the strength of energy loss is determined from RHIC Au+Au data. Uncertainties are discussed. With constraints from RHIC data, we predict the pT spectra of hadrons in 5% most central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy sqrt[sNN]=5500 GeV. Because of the closed framework for primary production, we can also predict the net-baryon number at midrapidity, as well as the strength of partonic energy losses at the LHC. Both at the LHC and RHIC, we recognize a rather narrow crossover region in the pT spectra, where the hydrodynamic and pQCD fragmentation components become of equal size. We argue that in this crossover region the two contributions are to a good approximation mutually independent. In particular, our results suggest a wider pT region of applicability for hydrodynamical models at the LHC than at RHIC.

Various pion and photon production mechanisms in high-energy nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC are discussed. Comparison with RHIC data is done whenever possible. Studies of 225,226U α -decay chains produced via heavy ion induced fusion reactions of 22Ne + 208Pb → 230U and of 18O + 208Pb → 226Th were carried out using the JYFL gas-filled magnetic recoil separator RITU. The data obtained for α -decays of 225,226U, 221,222Th, 218Ra and 213Rn concerning their α -particle energies, half-lives and α -decay fine structures are compared to previous investigations. peerReviewed

An in-beam study of excited states in the transfermium nucleus 252 No has been performed using the recoil separator RITU together with the JUROSPHERE II array at the University of Jyväskylä. This is the second transfermium nucleus studied in an in-beam experiment. Levels up to spin 20 were populated and compared to levels in 254 No . An upbend is seen at a frequency of 200 keV/ħ corresponding to spin 16. We also use an improved systematics to connect the energy of the lowest 2 + state with its half-life and find that the deformation of both 2 5 2 , 2 5 4 No is slightly larger than previously assumed. peerReviewed

We report here experimental attempts to determine the sign of the electric dipole moment (relative to the electric octupole moment) in the octupole deformed nucleus 226Ra. Sensitivity to this quantity is observed in the measured yields of γ-ray transitions following very low energy Coulomb excitation. Recent progress is also reported in the development of new spectroscopic techniques that promise to elucidate the structure of deformed superheavy nuclei in the region of 254No. The 4+ → 2+ transition in 254No, as well as higher spin transitions, has been identified using recoil-tagged conversion electron spectroscopy. peerReviewed

An extensive program to study the production, decay properties, and nuclear structure of very neutron-deficient polonium and radium nuclei is underway at the Department of Physics, University of Jyvaskyla, Finland (JYFL). The main tools used in these studies are the gas-filled recoil separator RITU and various germanium gamma-ray arrays. In the course of these studies, among others the following new isotopes have been produced: Ra-204, Ra-203, and Ra-202. Isomeric alpha decaying states have been discovered in Ra-203 and Po-191. Fine structure in the decay of Po-192 to the oblate and prolate band heads in Pb-188 has been observed. In-beam gamma-ray spectra have been, for the first time, measured for Po-192, Ra-206, Ra-208, and Ra-210. Development of collectivity in nuclei in the Po-Ra region and the systematics of reduced alpha widths will be discussed. peerReviewed

Several large trials have shown that the risk of stroke in patients with non-valvar atrial fibrillation is reduced by treatment with warfarin. Implementing this research evidence requires not only an understanding of the trials' results and of the changes that they imply for clinicians' treatment decisions but also an appreciation of the organisation, quantity, and quality of services required to support these changes. Understanding of these implications is crucial for developing services that allow changes in practice to produce reductions in stroke incidence while minimising the risks of treatment. This article considers the developments in service provision that will probably be required to support the changes in clinical practice suggested by the trials' results. These services will be provided largely by doctors, and their development has implications for doctors in both primary and secondary care.

Independent and cumulative yields in nearly symmetric fission have been measured for the first time by bombarding U-238 with 20-MeV protons and with 18-, 25-, and 41-MeV deuterons. Isobaric charge dispersion has been determined in the A = 110, A = 112, and A = 114 mass chains and, from asymmetric fission, in the A = 80 mass chain. The average isobaric charges in the p + U reaction were 44.01 +/- 0.20 (A = 110), 45.15 +/- 0.15 (A = 112), and 45.74 +/- 0.15 (A = 114). The widths (standard deviations) of the charge dispersion curves were 0.82 +/- 0.08 (A = 112) and 0.54 +/- 0.08 (A = 114). The average charges are roughly 0.3 unit higher than those calculated on the basis of the unchanged charge distribution model. The ground-state branch in the beta decay of 80Ge was determined to be 65%. Altogether some 15 new neutron-rich isotopes have been found, the newest one being 114Ru with a half-life of 0.53 +/- 0.06 s. An ion guide facility was used to separate the isobaric chains on-line from other fission products. Typical cumulative yields in a mass chain were on the order of 1000 atoms/mu-C, but for new isotopes independent yields as low as a few atoms/mu-C could be observed.

Neutron-rich nuclides Ru-110 and Ru-112 produced in symmetric fission of U-238 by 20 MeV protons have been studied at the IGISOL facility by means of beta-ray, gamma-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy. A total of 12 and 6 gamma-transitions were observed in the decays of Ru-110 and Ru-112, respectively. Multipolarities were determined for a few transitions. The beta decay half-life was determined to be 11.6 +/- 0.6 s for Ru-110 and 1.75 +/- 0.07 s for Ru-112. As a side product, a new value of 2.1 +/- 0.3 s for the beta half-life of the Rh-112 1+ state was obtained. The decay energy measured with the plastic scintillator was 2.81 +/- 0.05 MeV for Ru-110 and 4.52 +/- 0.08 MeV for Ru-112. The beta decay schemes of Ru-110 and Ru-112 isotopes indicate that the main fraction of their beta strength resides in two 0+ --> 1+ spin-flip transitions with their log f t values between 4.4 and 4.7. The decay energies and the energies of the 1+ GT states are compared with the macroscopic-microscopic model calculations. The observed GT-strengths are discussed in the framework of the deformed single-particle model.
