Introduction: Successful development of effective beta-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1)-targeted therapies for early stages of Alzheimer's disease requires biomarker-guided intervention strategies. Methods: We investigated whether key biological factors such as sex, apolipoprotein E (APOE epsilon 4) allele, and age affect longitudinal plasma BACE1 concentrations in a large monocenter cohort of individuals at risk for Alzheimer's disease. We explored the relationship between plasma BACE1 concentrations and levels of brain amyloid-beta (A beta) deposition, using positron emission tomography global standard uptake value ratios. Results: Baseline and longitudinal mean concentrations of plasma BACE1 were significantly higher in women than men. We also found a positive significant impact of plasma BACE1 on baseline A beta-positron emission tomography global standard uptake value ratios. Discussion: Our results suggest a sexual dimorphism in BACE1-related upstream mechanisms of brain A beta production and deposition. We argue that plasma BACE1 should be considered in further biomarker validation and qualification studies as well as in BACE1 clinical trials. (C) 2019 The Authors. A new developed collagen matrix CM-10826 (CM) of porcine origin designed to be used as oral soft tissue substitute was investigated before and after implantation by light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In a case series biopsy specimens were harvested from thirteen patients at 10, 20, 30, 43 days after abutment surgery for uncovering dental implants. The in vivo histological evaluations of each patient were performed via micro-coring of newly formed oral mucosa in the area covered by CM (test side) or left uncovered (control). Results showed that CM can be integrated in connective and epithelial tissues within 10 days, can be completely resorbed within 20 days and it is able to reduce inflammatory infiltrates and to stimulate both fibroblast/epithelial cell proliferation and neo-angiogenesis. Generally it seems to be superior in promoting soft tissue healing compared to that induced by secondary intention healing. Furthermore, it is able to act as a scaffold for soft-tissue regeneration, allowing the proliferation of keratinocytes from the wound edges and favoring neovascularization and growth of connective tissue in the mesh of porous layer. It appears that a CM might function in oral surgery as a substitute for autologous grafts and to avoid secondary intention healing in soft tissue defects.

Las antologías "Partire: Antologia narrativa di geografia emozionale" y "Partire: Antologia illustrata per eterni viaggiatori" fueron elaboradas por el CTS: Centro turístico Studentesco e Giovanile, en 2009, 2010, 2011 y 2013. Las cuatro obras relacionan historias, imágenes y pequeñas frases referidas con un "viaje de los sueños", que contiene el lugar y por qué ese viaje es el de los deseos. Cada obra contiene imágenes o historias relacionadas con temas específicos en los que se coloca cada narración; para cada una de las ediciones se anzó un concurso para estimular la participación en la redacción de las narraciones de jóvenes italianos entre dieciocho y treinta y cinco años sobre el tema del viaje. En otro artículo previamente producido, fueron analizados los componentes gramaticales de las contribuciones escritas. Los objetivos fueron identificar las posibles diferencias de las partes del discurso en los textos que componen los distintos volúmenes y, al mismo tiempo, tratar de establecer para los diversos textos, dentro de qué gama de valores se coloca la relación entre sustantivos y verbos. El análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo de las palabras más frecuentes permitió monitorear cómo algunos de los relatos de viaje se convierten en reflexiones introspectivas cambiando el enfoque de los que escriben del viaje en el mundo a los que lo hacen sobre el viaje de la vida y viceversa.
