159. Optical Synchrotron and Edge Radiation Diagnostics for Relativistic Electron Beams.

Abstract

In accelerators such as storage rings, energy recovery linacs (ERLs), and free electron lasers, bending magnets are used to alter the trajectory of a relativistic electron beam. Frequently the magnets are arranged in pairs in either a “U” or “S” configuration with an intervening straight section. In such configurations synchrotron radiation (SR) or edge radiation (ER) is produced in the bend and/or as the beam exits the field of each magnetic field region. Under certain conditions the radiation is produced in the visible region of the spectrum. The radiation from the second magnet can interfere with that of the first magnet, when a distance comparable to the coherence length of the radiation separates the two magnetic fields. For a beam with low energy spread, the visibility of the interference radiation depends on the beam divergence. To design a sensitive beam divergence diagnostic we have developed a computer code, which can calculate the far field radiation distribution produced by a relativistic electron moving along any trajectory in a magnetic field. The code model is based on the “colliding electron” approximation and reproduces all known features of SR and ER. The code can account for the spatial field distribution of the dipole magnet, the effect of beam divergence and the bandwidth of the measurement. Results of our calculations are presented for the 1.9-GeV Cornell Electron Storage Ring and the 100-MeV ERL at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory Free Electron Laser. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We are developing an all optical method to map the transverse phase space map of a charged particle beam. Our technique employs OTR interferometry (OTRI) in combination with a scanning pinhole to make local orthogonal (x,y) divergence and trajectory angle measurements as function of position within the transverse profile of the beam. The localized data allows a reconstruction of the horizontal and vertical phase spaces of the beam. We have also demonstrated how single and multiple pinholes can in principle be used to make such measurements simultaneously. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A regional model of Italy is presented to analyze unemployment responses to supply and demand shocks in the market for labor and goods. Both supply and demand components of unemployment are endogenous. Employment has low elasticity to output in Southern Italy where labor force increases more because of demographic and participation rate changes. This also makes it difficult to close the gap between this region and the most developed areas of the country. © 1994.

Abstract

We have observed up to 8 orders (n) in the spectra of parametric x-radiation (PXR), in the range 5-40 keV, produced by the interaction of a 90 MeV electron beam with mosaic graphite and single silicon crystals. The measured yields and intensity ratios I(n>/_2)/I(n=1), in graphite are not in agreement with the theory of PXR for mosaic crystals. In comparison, the ratios of intensities in silicon are close to the predictions of PXR theory for perfect crystals. The bandwidths of spectral lines measured in both silicon and graphite are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract

Background:There is growing evidence that interleukin-6 (IL-6) is linked to the regulation of fat mass (FM). Our previous data define the common −174G>C IL-6 polymorphism as a marker for 'vulnerable' individuals at risk of age- and obesity-related diseases. An association between −174G>C IL-6 polymorphism and weight loss after bariatric surgery has been demonstrated.Objective:We investigated the impact of −174G>C IL-6 polymorphism on weight loss, body composition, fluid distribution and cardiometabolic changes in obese subjects, after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) surgery.Design and Outcome measures:A total of 40 obese subjects were studied at baseline and at 6 months follow-up after LAGB surgery. Cardiometabolic and genetic assessment of −174G>C IL-6 polymorphism, anthropometric, body composition and fluid distribution analysis were performed.Results:After LAGB surgery, significant reductions in weight (Δ%=−11.66±7.78, P<0.001), body mass index (P<0.001), total and trunk FM (kg, %) (Δ% of total FM=−22.22±12.15, P<0.01), bone mineral density (T-score) (P<0.001), resting metabolic rate (RMR) (P<0.01), and total body water and intracellular water (TBW, ICW) (P<0.05) were observed. At baseline, C(−) carriers of IL-6 polymorphism had a significantly higher RMR (P<0.05), free FM (kg), but less total and trunk FM (%), higher body cell mass (BCM), content of TBW (L) and ECW (extracellular water)/ICW ratio compared with C(+) carriers (P<0.001). After LAGB, C(+) carriers had a significantly stronger reduction of total FM (kg), but lower bone density, compared with C(−) carriers (P<0.05).Conclusions:Beyond the relationship between −174G>C IL-6 polymorphism and body composition, this study provides first evidence about the association of IL-6 variant with fluid distribution, at baseline, and FM and bone density loss in obese subjects at 6 months follow-up after LAGB surgery. LAGB was less effective if the subjects were carrying risk genotypes, C(−) carriers, for obesity, suggesting a role of genetic variations on bariatric surgery outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have injected an intense relativistic electron beam into the atmosphere and observed the beam in visible light caused by direct beam excitation of air molecules. This light, primarily emission in the Ni 2nd positive system, was delayed with respect to the beam current by ∼6 ns. Streak photographs show that the beam consisted of a single current filament which oscillated about its initial direction as it propagated through the atmosphere, and that the beam had the characteristic trumpet-like shape. Beam and net current monitors were used to determine the beam current and the plasma return current. The net current was also predicted using a simple circuit model to represent the beam propagating in the atmosphere and agreed well with the measured net current. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

Previously, a resonance theory had been devised by us for the acoustic transmission (T) and reflection coefficient (R) of a fluid layer, or elastic plate imbedded in a fluid. This theory, based on the use of a ''resonance approximation,'' was restricted to the case of light fluid loading, or of a large impedance mismatch at the boundaries between the external fluid and the fluid layer or plate. In the present paper, the meromorphic function T (together with R) for a fluid layer is represented by a (Mittag-Leffler type) series expansion which not only directly exhibits resonance properties, but also furnishes the value of each resonance peak correctly, including the effect of the underlying tails of all other resonances. Being exact, this expansion is now applicable to the case of heavy fluid loading, or of a close impedance match between the external fluid and the layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a resonance theory for the acoustic transmission and reflection coefficients of an elastic plate imbedded in a fluid medium, which includes the effects of plate viscosity. This formulation provides a direct means for determining the material parameters of the plate from the measured acoustic resonances of the Rayleigh and Lamb waves in the plate (i.e., their positions in frequency or angle, their widths, and their heights) which are given in our formalism by explicit analytic expressions that depend on the material parameters. Viscosity is seen to manifest itself in a decrease of the resonance peaks and in a broadening and frequency dependence of the resonance widths, which may be used to determine the frequency-dependent loss factor of the plate.
