The phylogenetic position of the Ganges Gharial () among the living Crocodilia is reconsidered in the light of new biochemical and morphological data. The anatomical data suggest a sister group relationship between Gavialis and all other living crocodilians. In contrast the biochemical evidence indicates a sister group relationship between Gavialis and the false gavial, , and the rest of the living Crocodilia. The new morphological data from the dissections of the caudal musculature clearly favor the phylogenetic relationship for as proposed by the comparative anatomists. Early Cretaceous ichthyosaurs were globally distributed pelagic marine reptiles, but many remains are fragmentary, creating a Northern Hemisphere diversity bias. A rich Hauterivian locality near the Tyndall Glacier inside Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chile yields important new data regarding ichthyosaurian diversity along the Pacific margin of Gondwana. These new data will contribute to clarifying questions regarding ichthyosaur taxonomy and the palaeobiogeographical relationships between the southern Gondwanan and Northern Hemisphere ichthyosaur groups during the Early Cretaceous. Here, we describe three new ichthyosaur specimens from this locality. Two of them are referred to Myobradypterygius hauthali , expanding the distribution of this species from the Barremian of Argentina to the Hauterivian of the Chilean Patagonia. This material shows that M. hauthali differs from Platypterygius platydactylus in forefin construction and scapular morphology, supporting its classification as a separate genus within Platypterygiinae. The third specimen is a large-bodied indeterminate ophthalmosaurine ichthyosaur. This record represents the southernmost record of Ophthalmosaurinae and the first occurrence of this group from the Cretaceous of the Southern Hemisphere. These discoveries show that ophthalmosaurines and platypterygiines continued to occur sympatrically in southernmost Gondwana during the Early Cretaceous, expanding the pattern documented in Europe to the Pacific region. Reports that examination of the skeleton of the flying reptile Coelurosauravus jaekeli from the Upper Permian of Germany reveals that the animal had a gliding apparatus unlike that of any other tetrapod. Physical structures of the reptile which enabled it to glide.

At Cañada Ancha, about 15 km northwest of Saltillo, northeastern Mexico, deposits of the upper Campanian-?lower Maastrichtian Cerro del Pueblo Formation exhibit bone clusters of disarticulated hadrosaurids, tentatively assigned here based on maxillary features to Velafrons coahuilensis and a second yet undetermined taxon. We discuss the taphonomy of the material as transported and buried on a delta plain. The fossil fish Ptychodus Agassiz, 1834, characterized by a highly distinctive grinding dentition and an estimated gigantic body size (up to around 10 m), has remained one of the most enigmatic extinct elasmobranchs (i.e. sharks, skates and rays) for nearly two centuries. This widespread Cretaceous taxon is common in Albian to Campanian deposits from almost all continents. However, specimens mostly consist of isolated teeth or more or less complete dentitions, whereas cranial and post-cranial skeletal elements are very rare. Here we describe newly discovered material from the early Late Cretaceous of Mexico, including complete articulated specimens with preserved body outline, which reveals crucial information on the anatomy and systematic position of Ptychodus. Our phylogenetic and ecomorphological analyses indicate that ptychodontids were high-speed (tachypelagic) durophagous lamniforms (mackerel sharks), which occupied a specialized predatory niche previously unknown in fossil and extant elasmobranchs. Our results support the view that lamniforms were ecomorphologically highly diverse and represented the dominant group of sharks in Cretaceous marine ecosystems. Ptychodus may have fed predominantly on nektonic hard-shelled prey items such as ammonites and sea turtles rather than on benthic invertebrates, and its extinction during the Campanian, well before the end-Cretaceous crisis, might have been related to competition with emerging blunt-toothed globidensine and prognathodontine mosasaurs. The Oligocene was a period of profound climatic and biotic changes, coinciding with a shift from a mostly ice-free warmhouse world at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary to a globally cooler, more seasonal climate. The Rauenberg locality (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) is one of the most significant early Oligocene fossil assemblages in Europe, containing both marine and terrestrial elements of fauna and flora. Preservation is often superb and comprises complete and articulated skeletons with soft tissue preservation. The diverse assemblage provides critical insights into the paleoenvironment of the Upper Rhine Valley. We reassess diversity at the locality, resulting in a list of 302 taxa found at the site, 207 of which are marine (52% of taxa represented by macrofossils). The rest are interpreted as originating from the coastal environment. Molluscan, echinoderm, and plant macrofossil diversity are assessed here for the first time. Based on these new results, we interpret Rauenberg as representing a fully marine assemblage deposited in a moderately shallow, low-energy tropical-subtropical environment. Productivity was high, and seafloor anoxia was intermittently developed. There is no evidence for long-term brackish influence or mangrove swamps, and no direct evidence for the development of seagrass meadows. On land, warm, frost-free conditions permitted the development of prevailingly evergreen sclerophyllous broad-leaved forests along with pine and palm-rich coastal forests on sandy soils. Here we provide a detailed description of the upper Campanian sediment succession at Las Águilas, southern Coahuila, northeastern Mexico, including the first absolute age dating for this interval, paleoenvironmental reconstructions and taphonomic observations on the abundant dinosaur remains at the locality. Stratigraphic investigations of the dinosaur-bearing succession at the Las Águilas vertebrate fossil area near Porvenir de Jalpa reveal a diverse vertebrate assemblage, including dinosaurs, crocodilians and turtles. New findings in adjacent sites include eusuchian crocodylomorphs, four different kinds of turtles, dromaeosaurids, lambeosaurines, pterosaurs and elasmosaurid plesiosaurs. Strontium isotope measurements on fossil oyster shells provide an absolute age of 73 ± 1 Ma for the lower part of the Las Águilas section. The locality is thus of late Campanian age. The vertebrate, invertebrate and plant materials as well as the sediment structures observed in a 50 m thick predominantly siliciclastic succession of the Cerro del Pueblo Formation suggest deposition in an extensive delta plain environment. The facies succession indicates a short-termed cyclicity of limnic, brackish and shallow marine environments during the late Campanian–early Maastrichtian Cerro del Pueblo Formation with numerous layers containing dinosaur fossil remains. Investigaciones estratigráficas de los estratos con dinosaurios en el área fosilífera de Las Águilas cerca de Porvenir de Jalpa revelan un ensamblaje vertebrado diverso, incluyendo dinosaurios, cocodrilos y tortugas. Nuevos descubrimientos en sitios adyacentes incluyen crocodylomorfos eusuquios, cuatro diferentes tipos de tortugas, dromaeosauridos, lambeosaurinos, pterosaurios, y plesiosaurios elasmosauridos. Mediciones de isótopos de estroncio en conchas de ostiones fósiles proveen una edad absoluta de 73 ± 1 millones de años para la parte inferior de la sección de Las Águilas. Direct evidence of trophic interactions between extinct species is rarely available in the fossil record. Here, we describe fish-mammal associations from the middle Eocene of Messel (Germany), consisting of three specimens of holosteans (one Atractosteus messelensis (Lepisosteidae) and two Cyclurus kehreri (Amiidae)) each preserved with a bat specimen ( Palaeochiropteryx tupaiodon ) lying in close contact with its jaws. This suggests that these fishes probably died after failed swallowing attempts, with the bat wing membrane entangled in their jaws resulting in a fatal handicap. Based on data from modern gars and bowfins, A. messelensis and C. kehreri may have opportunistically attacked drowning and dying individuals or scavenged on floating/sinking carcasses. This hypothesis is also supported by the unusually high number of bat specimens preserved in the deposits of the Eocene Lake Messel, suggesting that this group of small mammals may have represented a substantial food source for generalist feeders. This is the earliest case of chiropterophagy and the first known evidence of bat consumption by lepisosteid and amiid fishes, emphasizing the high trophic variability and adaptability of these groups throughout their evolutionary histories. The newly described associations provide important information for reconstructing the Eocene Lake Messel palaeoecosystem and its trophic web.

In the dusk of the Mesozoic, advanced duck-billed dinosaurs (Hadrosauridae) were so successful that they likely outcompeted other herbivores, contributing to declines in dinosaur diversity. From Laurasia, hadrosaurids dispersed widely, colonizing Africa, South America, and, allegedly, Antarctica. Here, we present the first species of a duck-billed dinosaur from a subantarctic region, Gonkoken nanoi , of early Maastrichtian age in Magallanes, Chile. Unlike duckbills further north in Patagonia, Gonkoken descends from North American forms diverging shortly before the origin of Hadrosauridae. However, at the time, non-hadrosaurids in North America had become replaced by hadrosaurids. We propose that the ancestors of Gonkoken arrived earlier in South America and reached further south, into regions where hadrosaurids never arrived: All alleged subantarctic and Antarctic remains of hadrosaurids could belong to non-hadrosaurid duckbills like Gonkoken . Dinosaur faunas of the world underwent qualitatively different changes before the Cretaceous-Paleogene asteroid impact, which should be considered when discussing their possible vulnerability.

The pre-sacral vertebrae of most sauropod dinosaurs were surrounded by interconnected, air-filled diverticula, penetrating into the bones and creating an intricate internal cavity system within the vertebrae. Computational finite-element models of two sauropod cervical vertebrae now demonstrate the mechanical reason for vertebral pneumaticity. The analyses show that the structure of the cervical vertebrae leads to an even distribution of all occurring stress fields along the vertebrae, concentrated mainly on their external surface and the vertebral laminae. The regions between vertebral laminae and the interior part of the vertebral body including thin bony struts and septa are mostly unloaded and pneumatic structures are positioned in these regions of minimal stress. The morphology of sauropod cervical vertebrae was influenced by strongly segmented axial neck muscles, which require only small attachment areas on each vertebra, and pneumatic epithelia that are able to resorb bone that is not mechanically loaded. The interaction of these soft tissues with the bony tissue of the vertebrae produced lightweight, air-filled vertebrae in which most stresses were borne by the external cortical bone. Cervical pneumaticity was therefore an important prerequisite for neck enlargement in sauropods. Thus, we expect that vertebral pneumaticity in other parts of the body to have a similar role in enabling gigantism.

The orientation of the scapulocoracoid in sauropod dinosaurs is reconstructed based on comparative anatomical investigations of pectoral girdles of extant amniotes. In the reconstruction proposed here, the scapula of sauropods stands at an angle of at least 55 degrees to the horizontal plane in mechanical coherence with the sternal apparatus including the coracoids. The coracoids are oriented cranioventrally to the rib cage and the glenoid is directed mediolaterally, which allows the humerus to swing in a sagittal plane. The inclination of the scapula to the horizontal plane is reconstructed for Diplodocus (60-65 degrees), Camarasaurus (60-65 degrees), and Opisthocoelicaudia (55-65 degrees). The inclination of the scapulocoracoid has consequences for the overall body posture in Camarasaurus and Opisthocoelicaudia, where the dorsal contour would have ventrally declined toward the sacrum. Scapulocoracoid mobility depends on the arrangement of clavicles, the reconstruction of a coracosternal joint, and the reconstructed musculature of the shoulder girdle. In a crocodylian model of the shoulder musculature, m. serratus profundus and superficialis form a muscular sling, which suspends the trunk from the shoulder girdle and would allow a certain mobility of the scapulocoracoid. An avian model of the shoulder musculature would also mean suspension by means of the m. serratus complex, but indicates a closer connection of the scapula to the dorsal ribs, which would lead to more restricted movements of the scapulocoracoid in sauropods., (c 2006 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

While the crocodyliform lineage extends back over 200 million years (Myr) to the Late Triassic, modern forms-members of Eusuchia-do not appear until the Cretaceous. Eusuchia includes the crown group Crocodylia, which comprises Crocodyloidea, Alligatoroidea and Gavialoidea. Fossils of non-crocodylian eusuchians are currently rare and, in most instances, fragmentary. Consequently, the transition from Neosuchia to Crocodylia has been one of the most poorly understood areas of crocodyliform evolution. Here we describe a new crocodyliform from the mid-Cretaceous (98-95 Myr ago; Albian-Cenomanian) Winton Formation of Queensland, Australia, as the most primitive member of Eusuchia. The anatomical changes associated with the emergence of this taxon indicate a pivotal shift in the feeding and locomotor behaviour of crocodyliforms-a shift that may be linked to the subsequent rapid diversification of Eusuchia 20 Myr later during the Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary. While Laurasia (in particular North America) is the most likely ancestral area for Crocodylia, the biogeographic events associated with the origin of Eusuchia are more complex. Although the fossil evidence is limited, it now seems likely that at least part of the early history of Eusuchia transpired in Gondwana.
