Background: Previous quantitative synthetic MRI of the brain has been solely performed in 2D.Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility of the recently developed sequence 3D-QALAS for brain cortical thickness and volumetric analysis.Study Type: Reproducibility/repeatability study.Subjects: Twenty-one healthy volunteers (35.6 ± 13.8 years).Field Strength/sequence: 3D T1 -weighted fast spoiled gradient recalled echo (FSPGR) sequence was performed once, and 3D-QALAS sequence was performed twice with a 3T scanner.Assessment: FreeSurfer and FIRST were used to measure cortical thickness and volume of subcortical structures, respectively. Agreement with FSPGR and scan-rescan repeatability were evaluated for 3D-QALAS.Statistical Tests: Percent relative difference and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to assess reproducibility and scan-rescan repeatability of the 3D-QALAS sequence-derived measurements.Results: Percent relative difference compared with FSPGR in cortical thickness of the whole cortex was 3.1%, and 89% of the regional areas showed less than 10% relative difference in cortical thickness. The mean ICC across all regions was 0.65, and 74% of the structures showed substantial to almost perfect agreement. For volumes of subcortical structures, the median percent relative differences were lower than 10% across all subcortical structures, except for the accumbens area, and all structures showed ICCs of substantial to almost perfect agreement. For the scan-rescan test, percent relative difference in cortical thickness of the whole cortex was 2.3%, and 97% of the regional areas showed less than 10% relative difference in cortical thickness. The mean ICC across all regions was 0.73, and 80% showed substantial to almost perfect agreement. For volumes of subcortical structures, relative differences were less than 10% across all subcortical structures except for the accumbens area, and all structures showed ICCs of substantial to almost perfect agreement.Data Conclusion: 3D-QALAS could be reliably used for measuring cortical thickness and subcortical volumes in most brain regions.Level Of Evidence: 3 Technical Efficacy: Stage 1 J. Research has been conducted on 3-cyano-2,6-dimethoxypyridine. Results demonstrate that the irradiation of this compound in the presence of ethyl vinyl ether has resulted in production of photoadducts with the structure established via X-ray single-crystal analysis.

To develop a rigid real-time prospective motion-corrected multiparametric mapping technique and to test the performance of quantitative estimates. Motion tracking and correction were performed by integrating single-shot spiral navigators into a multiparametric imaging technique, three-dimensional quantification using an interleaved Look-Locker acquisition sequence with a T2 preparation pulse (3D-QALAS). The spiral navigator was optimized, and quantitative measurements were validated using a standard system phantom. The effect of motion correction on whole-brain T1 and T2 mapping under different types of head motion during the scan was evaluated in 10 healthy volunteers. Finally, six patients with Parkinson's disease, which is known to be associated with a high prevalence of motion artifacts, were scanned to evaluate the effectiveness of our method in the real world. The phantom study demonstrated that the proposed motion correction method did not introduce quantitative bias. Improved parametric map quality and repeatability were shown in volunteer experiments with both in-plane and through-plane motions, comparable to the no-motion ground truth. In real-life validation in patients, the approach showed improved parametric map quality compared to images obtained without motion correction. Five cultivars of camelina species (Camelina sativaL.) were grown in the field at two levels of nitrogen (N) under the climate conditions of Hokkaido Island, Japan. N nutrition as well as the genetic difference between cultivars influenced biomass and grain production. Three cultivars responded positively to N application, but not the other two. Increase in grain yield was associated more with grain number than grain size. The plants accommodated the extra grains by increasing pod number. Irrespective of the N level in the soil, α linolenic acid concentration of the grain was very high at 31% of the total fatty acids. In cultivar Calena, lower leaves on the main stem were excised to find the effect of reduced source area on yield. Defoliation of lower leaves did not affect grain yield, indicating that these leaves do not contribute to source capacity of the plant during grain filling. However, removal of all leaves decreased grain yield to 70% relative to the control plant. In contrast to defoliation, shading of the whole panicle consisting of the pod shell and rachis was more effective in reducing grain yield. Shading of the panicle prior to the grain filling period at the levels of 33 and 6% irradiance relative to control decreased grain yield to 39 and 26%, respectively. These results suggested that the pod shell and rachis are more important source organs for photosynthetic carbon supply to grains than the upper leaves, and they can sustain grain filling in exigency. The presence of attributes like extended source area for grain filling and highα-linolenic acid content of leaves is an indicator for successful adaptation ofCamelinain the stress-prone environment of Hokkaido Island. Fibroin nanofibers (FNFs) achieved from physical treated silk can keep its original crystal structure, showing excellent mechanical properties, however, processing the FNFs into fibers is still a challenge. Herein, a brand-new environmentally friendly approach is proposed to manufacture FNFs-based composite nanofibers. The water-soluble polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol) PVA, was applied to increase the viscoelasticity of the spinning dope, and the content of FNFs can reach up to 20 wt%. The established phase image of spinning suggested that the concentrations ranging from 6 wt% to 8 wt% are premium to achieving relatively homogenous FNFs/PVA nanofibers. Random fibers were deposited on a fixed collector, while the fiber orientation intensity increased with the rotational speed of drum and started decreasing after 12 m/s. The mechanical properties of the composite nanofibers showed the similar tendency of variation of fiber orientation. In addition, chemical changes, crystallinity, and thermal properties of the composite nanofibers were further clarified by means of FTIR, DSC, and TG. As a result, high FNFs contained nanofibers with excellent thermal properties were created from an aqueous solution. Introduction: This study compared the short‐term outcomes of older adult patients with locally advanced gastric cancer who underwent open distal gastrectomy (ODG) with those who underwent laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) using propensity score matching analysis. Methods: Overall, 341 consecutive older adult patients aged 75 years with gastric cancer who underwent ODG or LDG between January 2013 and December 2020 were retrospectively assessed. Among them, 121 patients with locally advanced gastric cancer were included. To compare short‐term outcomes, a 1:1 propensity score matching analysis was performed. Results: After matching, 29 patients were included in both groups. Compared with the ODG group, the LDG group had a longer operative time (mean, 290 vs. 190 min; p <.0001) and lower estimated blood loss (mean, 39 vs. 223 mL; p <.0001). Overall postoperative complications of grade 2 and higher were observed in 2 (6.9%) and 12 (41%) patients in the LDG and ODG groups, respectively (p =.0046). Of these, the LDG group had a significantly lower incidence rate of infectious complications than the ODG group (3.4% vs. 27.6%; p =.025). Furthermore, in multivariate analysis, the laparoscopic approach was an independent protective factor against postoperative complications (p =.029). Conclusions: LDG is safe and feasible for locally advanced gastric cancer in patients aged ≥75 years. Alcohol-based hand rubs are generally recommended for infection control of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Hand hygiene agents, including ozonated water (OW), have been used as an alternative because alcohol-based products may cause skin damage. A few reports are available on the virucidal activity of OW against SARS-CoV-2; therefore, this study examined the inhibitory effect of 0.4, 1.0, and 4.0 ppm OW on the Omicron variant infection to VeroE6 cells expressing transmembrane protease serine 2 by calculating the median tissue culture infectious dose (TCID50) using the E1052–20 test method of the American Society of Testing Materials International. Additionally, viral RNA copies were measured in culture supernatants of control or OW. Each OW concentration demonstrated ≥5.6 log10 TCID50 reduction, corresponding to ≥99.999% reduction of infectious virus, while the control phosphate-buffered saline showed no inactivation effect. More than 5 log10 copies/mL reduction of viral RNA was observed in the culture supernatant of each OW compared with the control. These findings suggest that exposure of SARS-CoV-2 to at least 0.4 ppm OW for 5 s is sufficient for viral inactivation and that OW can be used as an alternative hand hygiene agent to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection. Simple Summary: This study identified the risk factors of non-local recurrence of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wild-type glioblastoma, a highly aggressive brain tumor. We found that subventricular zone involvement significantly increased the risk of non-local recurrence, with the tumor contacting the trigone of the lateral ventricle and tending to develop subependymal dissemination. A meta-analysis of previous studies confirmed subventricular zone involvement and O-6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase promoter methylation as risk factors for non-local recurrence. In contrast, ventricular opening via surgery did not increase the risk of non-local recurrence. These findings emphasize the need for tailored therapeutic strategies based on tumor location and molecular characteristics and provide valuable guidance for clinical decision-making in managing recurrent glioblastoma. Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wild-type glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly aggressive brain tumor with a high recurrence rate despite adjuvant treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors for non-local recurrence of GBM. In the present study, we analyzed 104 GBMs with a single lesion (non-multifocal or multicentric). Univariate analysis revealed that subventricular zone (SVZ) involvement was significantly associated with non-local recurrence (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.09 [1.08–4.05]). Tumors in contact with the trigone of the lateral ventricle tended to develop subependymal dissemination (p = 0.008). Ventricular opening via surgery did not increase the risk of non-local recurrence in patients with SVZ involvement (p = 0.190). A systematic review was performed to investigate the risk of non-local recurrence, and 21 studies were identified. A meta-analysis of previous studies confirmed SVZ involvement (odds ratio [OR]: 1.30 [1.01–1.67]) and O-6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase promoter methylation (OR: 1.55 [1.09–2.20]) as significant risk factors for local recurrence. A time-dependent meta-analysis revealed a significant association between SVZ involvement and dissemination (HR: 1.69 [1.09–2.63]), while no significant association was found for distant recurrence (HR: 1.29 [0.74–2.27]). Simple Summary: Awake surgery is the gold standard for localizing brain function and contributes to the maximal safe resection of brain tumors. On the other hand, the effectiveness of awake surgery for glioblastomas is controversial. One reason is that it is unclear whether awake surgery can be performed safely and whether functional areas can be detected in glioblastomas, which cause more severe edema than lower-grade gliomas. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy and safety of awake surgery for glioblastomas and to determine its current status through a literature review. Our study revealed awake mapping was successfully completed in 88%, and a positive response to mapping was observed in 53% of participants. The extent of resection and neurological deficits were comparable to previous studies. We concluded that awake surgery for glioblastomas can be safely performed and is useful for detecting functional areas. These findings influence treatment strategies for glioblastomas and improve treatment outcomes. Awake surgery contributes to the maximal safe removal of gliomas by localizing brain function. However, the efficacy and safety thereof as a treatment modality for glioblastomas (GBMs) have not yet been established. In this study, we analyzed the outcomes of awake surgery as a treatment modality for GBMs, response to awake mapping, and the factors correlated with mapping failure. Patients with GBMs who had undergone awake surgery at our hospital between March 2010 and February 2023 were included in this study. Those with recurrence were excluded from this study. The clinical characteristics, response to awake mapping, extent of resection (EOR), postoperative complications, progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and factors correlated with mapping failure were retrospectively analyzed. Of the 32 participants included in this study, the median age was 57 years old; 17 (53%) were male. Awake mapping was successfully completed in 28 participants (88%). A positive response to mapping and limited resection were observed in 17 (53%) and 13 participants (41%), respectively. The EOR included gross total, subtotal, and partial resections and biopsies in 19 (59%), 8 (25%), 3 (9%), and 2 cases (6%), respectively. Eight (25%) and three participants (9%) presented with neurological deterioration in the acute postoperative period and at 3 months postoperatively, respectively. The median PFS and OS were 15.7 and 36.9 months, respectively. The time from anesthetic induction to extubation was statistically significantly longer in the mapping failure cohort than that in the mapping success cohort. Functional areas could be detected during awake surgery in participants with GBMs. Thus, awake mapping influences intraoperative discernment, contributes to the preservation of brain function, and improves treatment outcomes. Some herbivorous insects possess the ability to synthesize phytohormones and are considered to use them for manipulating their host plants, but how these insects acquired the ability remains unclear. We investigated endogenous levels of auxin (IAA) and cytokinins (iP and tZ), including their ribosides (iPR and tZR), in various terrestrial arthropod taxa. Surprisingly, IAA was detected in all arthropods analysed. In contrast, tZ and/or tZR was detected only in some taxa. Endogenous levels of IAA were not significantly different among groups with different feeding habits, but gall inducers possessed significantly higher levels of iPR, tZ and tZR. Ancestral state reconstruction of the ability to synthesize tZ and tZR revealed that the trait has only been acquired in taxa containing gall inducers. Our results strongly suggest critical role of the cytokinin synthetic ability in the evolution of gall-inducing habit and IAA has some function in arthropods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Scrub typhus (ST) is endemic in Fukushima, with the largest number of cases reported in Japan from 2009 to 2010. Although ST is highly treatable, its atypical clinical presentation impedes diagnosis, causing delays in treatment. Methods We review the clinical features of ST in adults from 2008 to 2017 at Ohta Nishinouchi General Hospital in Fukushima, Japan. Results Fifty-five cases (serotype Karp 24, Irie/Kawasaki 21, Hirano/Kuroki 10) of ST were confirmed via serology based on elevated immunoglobulin (Ig)M and IgG and polymerase chain reaction positivity of eschar samples. The mean age was 69 years, and 64% were female. The case fatality rate was 1.8% (1/55). Approximately 70% of cases (38/55) were not diagnosed as ST upon the initial clinic visit. Inappropriate use of antibiotics was identified in 22% of cases (12/55). In terms of atypical clinical features, 1 or more of the manifestations, fever, rash, and eschar, was absent in 31% of cases (17/55). Approximately 11% of cases presented without eschar (6/55; Karp 1, Irie/Kawasaki 1, Hirano/Kuroki 4). Moreover, severe complications were observed with shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation in 7% of cases (4/55), Thus, while 53% of cases presented with the typical triad (29/55), unusual complications and atypical features occurred in 40% (22/55). Conclusions Diagnosis of ST becomes clinically challenging in the absence of typical features. In Fukushima, an endemic area of ST, an atypical presentation involving multisystem disease is common.
