There seem to be many kinds of moral duties. We should keep our promises; we should pay our debts of gratitude; we should compensate those we've wronged; we should avoid doing or intending harm; we should help those in need. These constitute, some worry, an unconnected heap of duties: the realm of commonsense morality is a disorganized mess. In this paper, we outline a strategy for unifying commonsense moral duties. We argue that they can be understood in terms of contact with value. You are in contact with a value when you are manifest in it or when it is manifest in you. You have reason to get in contact with the good and avoid contact with evil. And when you're in contact with a value, the weight of the reasons it grounds are amplified for you. The article presents the discussion on expressing gratitude for the attention given to exploratory thoughts on a Christian theology of science by distinguished scholars in a Modern Theology forum. Topics include contrasting readings by metaphysical theologians versus science-engaged theologians and historians, and the emerging visibility of Christian metaphysical theology challenging established science and religion discourse.

In the study, 512 high school students from China were followed three times over a two-year period using a follow-up study design. Based on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions, a cross-lagged model was developed to investigate the bidirectional relationship between gratitude and depression/anxiety. The results showed that gratitude was significantly negatively correlated with depression and anxiety. However, gratitude did not significantly negatively predict depression and anxiety in the cross-lag analysis, while depression and anxiety did significantly negatively predict gratitude. Based on the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions, this study breaks the direct promoting effect of gratitude on promoting mental health in traditional cognition, and reveals the one-way predicting relationship between depression and anxiety, two typical adverse psychological emotions, on gratitude, which has important theoretical and practical significance for understanding the development of social emotions in adolescents from the perspective of mental health. This study examined compliance resistance to highlight the active role of persuasion targets in interpersonal influence interactions. The data gathered from 242 respondents through an online questionnaire were used to identify the types of rejected requests and the strategies used to refuse compliance. Findings from a qualitative content analysis revealed four categories that formed a request typology: requests (1) for company or presence, (2) for action (benefitting the agent, benefitting other people), (3) for material support, and (4) for relational commitment. The messages utilized to communicate compliance resistance were grouped into two: refusals (1) with another verbal message and (2) with no other remark. The verbal expressions of refusal belonging to the first category were each accompanied by a simple explanation, a message of apology and/or gratitude, an offer of future commitment, or a proposal of alternative. The various kinds of denied requests and the different techniques persuasion targets use to convey noncompliance demonstrate that refusal to comply is not merely a passive reaction to a compliance-gaining effort. This paper explores the China-US relationship through a thematic analysis of 781 YouTube comments on the China-US Anchorage Summit. Guided by the six conditions of Dahlberg's model of an ideal online public sphere, this study has found: first, the emerged themes from the selected comments fit in with Dahlberg's six conditions in terms of gratitude, opposition, reflection, respect, accuracy, and inclusion. Second, the YouTube platform presents the online commentators an ideal public sphere for active and meaningful interactions with one another, thus showcasing that an online public sphere is feasible, practical, and ideal. As implications, the research findings herein reinforce the validity of Dahlberg's model by showcasing YouTube as one of the most important social media outlets which materializes the existence and facilitates the operation of an ideal online public sphere. Meanwhile, the research findings also shed light onto further explorations of the online social media and genuine understanding of the developmental trajectory of the China-US relationship. Developing a measurement of grateful climate is an essential step to examining the function of a grateful climate in a team or group context. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable measure of the grateful climate of sports teams. We defined the grateful climate of sports teams as a culturally shaped perception that team members collectively exhibit values, beliefs and expected behaviors that fit with the script of gratitude. Exploratory factor analysis and multilevel confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Sports Team Grateful Climate Questionnaire. In addition, nomological validity and incremental validity were also examined. The results indicated that the 9-item Sports Team Grateful Climate Questionnaire has good convergent validity, nomological validity, and incremental validity. This article explores the inclusion of civil society organizations (CSOs) in international organizations (IOs) as a means of democratizing global governance. However, empirical research shows that CSOs often face exclusion and inequality within IOs, with economically powerful actors having greater access and influence. The article takes a practice theoretical perspective to understand the everyday dynamics of civil society participation in global governance and the potential for democratization. While civil society participation can reproduce, contest, and potentially transform global governance, it often leads to conformity with existing organizational practices rather than substantive change. Trait gratitude is an individual characteristic that makes people aware of the positive aspects of their lives and situations, and it represents a significant resource when facing critical life transitions. However, only a few studies have investigated which factors might promote gratitude. This study sought to fill this gap by analyzing the relationship between personal values and trait gratitude in a group of young adults with divorced parents compared to peers with married parents. One hundred and twenty-three Italian young adults (44.7% from divorced families) completed the Portrait Values Questionnaire-21 and the Gratitude Teen Survey. Results showed that conservation and self-transcendence values were positively related to gratitude for both groups. In contrast, self-enhancement values were positively associated with gratitude only among young adults with divorced parents. This study examined how expressed gratitude and apologies functioned as politeness strategies among 499 Japanese workers. In this online experimental research with 4 message conditions (control, gratitude, apologies, both) and 2 status conditions (lower/same), participants read a message from a hypothetical coworker and reported perceptions of face threats in the message, the coworker's warmth, and their willingness to engage in prosocial behavior. Results indicated that expressed gratitude and apologies reduced face threats compared to no expressions. Further, path analysis showed that expressed gratitude indirectly affected perceptions of warmth through reduced face threats. Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer, an Indigenous scholar, has been recognized for her work on Indigenous knowledge, ecology, and environmental stewardship with a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. Her concept of "braiding" Indigenous and Western knowledge systems has increased the visibility and validity of Indigenous worldviews in science. Two Indigenous scholars share their personal experiences of how Kimmerer's work has inspired them and influenced their own research. Student teachers have become an increasingly important group in university. Some scholars have begun to study the influencing factors of student teachers' subjective well-being. However, few studies explored the potential positive factors, such as profession-related support, professional identity and gratitude, especially whether and how profession-related support affects student teachers' subjective well-being, and how this relationship varies across trait gratitude and gender. Student teachers' subjective well-being not only concerns their own mental health and personal professional development, but also concerns their future student's academic performance, lifelong learning and development, so they should be given more importance in scholarly research on well-being. Based on the conservation of resource theory, this study examines the relationship between profession-related support from significant others (teachers, parents) and subjective well-being in a sample of Chinese student teachers, and proposes a moderated moderated-mediation model to reveal the mediating (professional identity) and moderating (trait gratitude×gender) effects of this relation. A time-lagged design was used to collect two waves of data (N = 575). Results indicated that both profession-related teacher support and parent support had positive effect on subjective well-being, professional identity mediated this effect, respectively, and profession-related teacher support made slightly greater contribution to subjective well-being than parent support. Meanwhile, trait gratitude moderated the relationship between profession-related teacher support, parent support, and professional identity (two-way interaction), and this moderating effect was further moderated by gender (three-way interaction). Furthermore, trait gratitude×gender moderated the strength of the indirect effect of profession-related teacher support on subjective well-being (through professional identity), and the mediated relationship was stronger for female (versus male) student teachers who have high (versus low) trait gratitude (moderated moderated-mediation). This study examined whether grateful people are prone to sacrificing other people for the sake of their benefactors, themselves for the sake of their benefactors, and themselves for the sake of other people. Study 1 used a vignette methodology to induce participants' gratitude, and Study 2 an autobiographical recall procedure. In Study 1, the participants who received benevolent benefits in the vignette (gratitude condition) were more likely to sacrifice other people for the sake of their benefactors compared to those receiving benefits without benevolent intention (indebtedness‐baseline condition). The same method revealed a tendency for grateful people to sacrifice themselves for benefactors and others. Study 1's results could not be replicated by the preregistered analysis in Study 2. However, gratitude positively correlated with their propensity to sacrifice other people for the sake of benefactors, though it was not a preregistered analysis. The scientific understanding of gratitude has grown in recent years. However, research on the role gratitude plays in the lives of family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease in the early or begnning stages is limited. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to gain a rich understanding of gratitude through the narratives of 27 family caregivers of persons with early-stage Alzheimer’s. Interpretative phenomenological analysis, a qualitative methodology, was used to identify the following themes: (1) A caregiver’s individual affinity towards having a grateful life orientation influences their unique caregiving experience; (2) Gratitude for a range of resources, including what the person with Alzheimer’s continues to contribute, makes a difference; (3) Gratitude for the efforts of other people, including how caregiving strengthened relationships, was present; and (4) Spirituality is a gratitude-related resource which may be expressed behaviorally to enhance well-being among caregivers. This study provides an in depth understanding of gratitude in this unique and growing population which can inform the development of clinical interventions for improving well-being. The relationship between gratitude and many positive outcomes (e.g., work engagement) has been demonstrated, but less is concerned with gratitude in work environments. Thus, it is unclear of whether and how gratitude at work is related to work engagement. To fill the gap, this study examined the impact of gratitude at work on work engagement from the self-determination theory perspective. A total of 536 employees in China took part in the study and were asked to respond to a series of questionnaires consisting of the Gratitude Questionnaire, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, and Basic Need Satisfaction at Work Scale. The results found that gratitude at work was positively associated with work engagement. Furthermore, basic psychological needs satisfaction mediated the influence of gratitude at work on work engagement. Our findings enrich relevant research on gratitude at work, substantiate a possible mediating mechanism (i.e., basic psychological needs satisfaction) linking gratitude at work and work engagement, and suggest theoretical and practical implications as well as possible future research directions. Gratitude is pivotal in promoting and maintaining prosocial interactions in human society. However, it is unclear whether the prosocial function of gratitude can be observed even in situations of uncertainty about whether one can provide benefits to others. Here, we examined whether gratitude promotes prosocial behavior in uncertain situations. Participants (N = 60) were randomly assigned to either a gratitude or neutral group. Following the emotion-induced manipulation, we examined whether participants would choose a non-unique resource when selecting one of four resources (one unique and three non-unique) to leave the choice to the follower. This represented an uncertain situation in which choosing a non-unique resource does not necessarily mean the follower will choose the unique one. Results showed that participants in the gratitude group were more likely to choose non-unique resources than those in the neutral group, suggesting that gratitude promotes prosocial behavior even in uncertain situations. Introduction: While adversity can bring great challenges to individuals’ life and work, many people also find ways to make positive changes and adapt to these difficult circumstances. Individuals tend to make social comparisons more frequently and intensely when faced with adversity or high stress. The study attempts to examine the influence mechanism of downward social comparison on individual adversarial growth. Methods: By collecting data from 353 Chinese who have experienced adversities in the past 3 years, the study validates the dual mediating model of gratitude and self-acceptance and explores the moderating effect of interpersonal sensitivity. Results: The findings indicate that: downward social comparison can increase the occurrence of adversarial growth by enhancing individuals’ self-acceptance and gratitude. Compared to individuals with low interpersonal sensitivity, individuals with high interpersonal sensitivity are more likely to facilitate the occurrence of adversarial growth through self-acceptance and gratitude due to downward social comparison. Discussion: In the face of adversity, individuals can regain self-confidence and respond positively by comparing themselves to people in worse situations than themselves. In particular, individuals with higher interpersonal sensitivity are more likely to benefit from downward social comparisons and grow from adversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decades after World War II, major commemorations are still organised to collectively remember this war. Aiming for inclusive societies, the perspectives of immigrants with different war experiences are important to be heard in relation to these commemorations. Research reveals that commemorations can kindle difficult emotions such as sadness and bring distressing memories to the fore. Concurrently, psychosocial factors such as societal support and meaning making may buffer the emotional distress and contribute to a beneficial impact. It is not well known how this applies to immigrants. The present study explores how war-affected immigrants in the Netherlands relate to the Dutch Remembrance Day. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 war-affected immigrants from 8 different countries (including countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America). Qualitative analyses revealed that participants experienced multiple and mixed emotions during the Dutch Remembrance Day, including sadness, longing, and gratitude. Memories about own war experiences and losses often arose, of which the impact varied from distress to relief. The context of war in participants' countries of origin, such as ongoing conflict or a contested history, often hindered commemoration of these wars. Through the Dutch commemoration, most war-affected immigrants experienced social connectedness and openness for (emotional) expression which contributed to dealing with their past experiences. Insights from this study may guide counsellors working with war-affected immigrants and help societies to organise optimally appealing commemorations within an inclusive society. Gratitude has been found to have numerous positive effects on emotional health, interpersonal relationships, and even physical health. Expressing gratitude and acknowledging the goodness in one's life can lead to improved psychological well-being and closer relationships. People who experience gratitude regularly have lower levels of depression and better sleep. Additionally, witnessing acts of gratitude can also have a positive impact on observers. It is recommended to incorporate a small dose of gratitude into daily life, such as through writing a quick email or text expressing thanks. Previous research has shown that gratitude can reduce aggression via enhanced empathy. However, further research is needed to distinguish different subtypes of empathy and aggression, and to evaluate the relationship among highly aggressive individuals. The current study investigated the roles of two subtypes of empathy (perspective taking and empathic concern) in the relationship between gratitude and two subtypes of aggression (reactive and proactive aggressions) among general population (N = 363, Study 1) and male prisoners (N = 241, Study 2). In both studies, parallel mediational analyses supported that perspective taking, rather than empathic concern, plays a critical role in correlating gratitude with two subtypes of aggression. This effect was more significant in prisoners than in the community population. These findings enhance the understanding of the underlying mechanism linking gratitude to aggression and imply a new promising target for gratitude-based interventions to reduce aggression in prisoners. The current study investigated perceived gratitude in multiple family relationships (i.e. couple, parent-older child, parent-younger child) and their unique associations with couple, parenting, and individual outcomes. Study hypotheses were executed from a nationwide sample of 593 parents that were married or in a romantic relationship. Results indicated perceived gratitude from romantic partners was associated with couple relationship satisfaction but was not associated with parenting stress; conversely, perceived gratitude from children was associated with parenting stress but was not associated with couple relationship satisfaction. Perceived gratitude from romantic partners and from older children, but not younger children, were associated with less psychological distress. Some moderation effects by sex were also observed. Additionally, women were found to report lower levels of perceived gratitude from romantic partners and from older children than men. Grounded in self-determination theory, this study explores the positive impact of perceived coach autonomy support on athletes’ subjective vitality. Additionally, we posit that a grateful climate, functioning as a socio-cultural structure, plays a crucial cross-level moderator. A total of 203 athletes from 32 sports teams were included in the analysis. Employing a time-lagged design, our results reveal a significant predictive relationship between perceived coach autonomy support and changes in subjective vitality. Moreover, a noteworthy cross-level moderating effect of the grateful climate emerged. In teams characterized by a high grateful climate, the relationship between perceived coach autonomy support and athletes’ subjective vitality is strengthened, and such an effect is not validated in teams with a low grateful climate. These findings are consistent with our expectations, affirming not only the replication of previous research but also emphasizing the importance of a grateful climate as a cultural structural factor in this context. Objective: To investigate whether Heartfulness meditation practice, compared to Gratitude practice, leads to measurable changes in mental wellbeing among healthcare providers across the US. Method: Participants were randomly assigned to one of the following 6-week interventions: the trainer-guided virtual Heartfulness meditation program or the podcast-based self-guided gratitude practice group. The Professional Quality of Life Scale-5 (ProQOL-5) was used to determine Compassion Satisfaction (CS) and risk for Burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS). The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) was used to assess vigor, dedication, and absorption at work. Outcomes were collected at baseline and the end of the study period. Qualitative questions regarding the experience of learning and practicing were also offered at the end of the six weeks. Results: The majority of participants were nurses (50%), followed by allied healthcare professionals (37%) and physicians (13%) (N = 83). There was a general trend towards increases in CS in the Heartfulness group compared to the gratitude group. However, this was not statistically significant. Strong evidence suggests there was a significant improvement in BO for the Heartfulness group between Week 0 and Week 6 (p = 0.002), as well as STS (p = 0.0004) and vigor (p = 0.0392). Qualitative data analysis revealed that the subjects in the Heartfulness arm reported improved sleep and decreased reactivity to stress. Subjects in the gratitude arm reported improved mood and favorable results using gratitude practices at home with family members. Conclusion: In our study, Heartfulness meditation practice was associated with a significant improvement in burnout and vigor at work, with a trend towards compassion satisfaction after six weeks compared with gratitude practices. Qualitative analysis indicates the benefits of both Heartfulness and Gratitude practices. Further randomized trials with a larger sample size are needed to explore these science-based practices for the wellbeing of healthcare workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to understand and deepen the needs of families and schools with mentally disabled children in forming social relationships, and to evaluate the perceptions of parents regarding the roles they assume in the socialization of their mentally disabled children. This qualitative research utilized semi-structured interviews as a data collection tool, conducting interviews with a total of five parents. These interviews have identified significant details of experiences. The research was conducted in Ankara in May 2018. The sampling used in the research is snowball sampling. Five parents of children with disabilities participated in the study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with individuals using a semi-structured interview form. In-depth interviews with parents lasted 40-50 minutes on average. A voice recorder was used during the interviews. The voice recordings obtained as a result of the interviews within the scope of the research were transcribed. The data collected with the semistructured interview form were subjected to descriptive analysis and then thematic coding was performed. Among the results obtained, it was found that there is a need to integrate children into daily social activities within the family, as children spend most of their time with their families or at school. The need for responding to negative situations, managing emotions, and resolving conflicts in schools is clearly visible. Occasionally, mentally disabled children may exhibit aggressive behaviors that do not facilitate their relationships with peers at school. As a conclusion of the study, it has been determined that families need to implement parenting practices that promote socialization habits. For example, it has been observed that communication that starts within family interactions, such as asking politely, expressing gratitude, discussing, and sharing with other people around, will be beneficial. In schools, there is a necessity for teachers to work closely and complementarily with families and to empower children in negotiation and mediation for the peaceful resolution of conflicts. In addition, it was determined that it is important that not only parents and the school environment but also the socio-cultural environment in which children with intellectual disabilities live should be sufficiently conscious, knowledgeable and sensitive about disability in researching the social interactions of children with intellectual disabilities, and it was emphasized that the policies to be created by both official and voluntary non-governmental organizations are important in this interaction. Although religiosity has been recognized as a predictor of health and well‐being, links between religiosity and body image have not been extensively examined. The objective of our study was to explore possible pathways through which religious commitment might be associated with body appreciation in a Polish sample. Participants (N = 262) completed measures of religious commitment, positive orientation, gratitude, and body appreciation. Results demonstrated that religious commitment was positively related to body appreciation. Moreover, both positive orientation and gratitude mediated this relationship. A higher level of religious commitment was associated with a higher level of positive orientation and gratitude that, in turn, was related to a greater body appreciation. This article argues that interpersonal commitment is statespersons' most highly coveted aim, the greatest benefit that interpersonal relations can yield in diplomacy. Accordingly, statespersons employ a range of relational practices in encounters with counterparts, seeking to create and harness commitment that will advance professional aims. We argue that statespersons can follow one of two paths to generate commitment: (1) creating feelings of gratitude and providing help that makes a counterpart feel indebted; or (2) cultivating friendly relations. Both demand the successful implementation of relational practices. On the basis of thirty semistructured interviews with past and present senior Israeli statespersons and an analysis of fifteen autobiographies written by senior Israeli diplomats and political figures, we demonstrate to what extent statespersons acknowledge the importance of interpersonal commitment and its ramifications; identify the relational practices that statespersons employ to elicit commitment from a counterpart; and discuss the conditions that facilitate the emergence of such a commitment. Living with cancer is a challenge to the individuals and their families. This is a personal perspective of a person living with a diagnosis of cancer for over a decade and as psychiatrist supporting others in a similar situation and their caregivers. The challenges are medical, psychological, social, and spiritual. In the care of persons living with a diagnosis of cancer, there is a need to mobilize all of the resources toward relief and recovery. In the Indian context, to make sense of the uncertainties, spirituality in various forms is harnessed by the patients and their families. Epics and religious stories are routinely used to make sense of the pain, distress, and uncertainties of living with cancer. It is for the caregiving professionals to understand this rich resource in India, and develop ways of maximizing the value of spirituality in the care programs. Systematic study, documentation, and adaptation of the spiritual resources of different religions and communities in the cancer care could be an important Indian contribution to cancer care in the world. The first goal of the current research was to study the short‐term developmental patterns of ingroup and outgroup prosocial behavior during the middle adolescence stage among Uruguayan and Colombian adolescents. The second goal was to study the probability of inclusion in each trajectory class arising from gratitude and forgiveness (understood as the absence of negative emotions and the presence of positive emotions toward an aggressor) while controlling for gender and age. The study included two short‐term longitudinal samples from two Latin American countries: Colombia (N = 212, M age = 13.82 years, SD = 1.25) and Uruguay (N = 269, M age = 14.02 years, SD = 1.39). The data were collected at three time points within a 3‐month interval. The first finding indicated that different patterns in ingroup and outgroup prosocial behavior in adolescents emerged in both Latin American countries. Moreover, two classes—high and low—were identified in the trajectory of ingroup prosocial behavior, while three different classes—high, moderate, and low—were found in the trajectory of outgroup prosocial behavior in both countries. The results indicated that high levels of gratitude increased the probability that Uruguayan adolescents were included in the group of adolescents with high levels of ingroup prosocial behavior. High levels of positive emotions toward an aggressor (a dimension of forgiveness) increased the probability that a Colombian adolescent belonged to the group of adolescents with high levels of ingroup prosociality. Regarding outgroup prosocial behavior, different predictors were also identified between the countries. The results indicated that high levels of gratitude and positive emotions toward an aggressor increased the probability that Uruguayan adolescents were included in the group of adolescents with high or moderate levels of outgroup prosocial behavior. Only positive emotions toward an aggressor increased the probability that Colombian adolescents were included in the group of adolescents with high or moderate levels of outgroup prosocial behavior. The Batak Toba family adheres to a patrilineal family system, where couples are expected to have sons to continue the clan. Batak parents who do not have sons often feel stressed, anxious and depressed. This research aims to examine the influence of gratitude and social support on the psychological well-being of Batak Toba parents who do not have sons. A total of 50 Batak Toba fathers and mothers who did not have sons were the research sample. Data collection was carried out through online and offline questionnaires. This research uses quantitative methods with a correlation design, and data analysis uses multiple linear analysis with SPSS 22. The findings of this research show that gratitude has a positive effect on the psychological well-being of Batak Toba parents who do not have sons, this result strengthens existing literature. These results can also encourage policies to create mental health services and social programs that support them and reduce the stigma against Batak parents who do not have sons. The heavy workload of kindergarten teachers is the main cause of physical and emotional fatigue and decreased job satisfaction. Therefore, it is important to consider the subjective well-being of kindergarten teachers. This study aimed to determine the effect of gratitude and self-efficacy on subjective well-being among kindergarten teachers. This study included 128 samples of kindergarten teachers whose data were measured by the Gratitude Questionnaire-6 (GQ-6), General Self-Efficacy Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the PANAS. The results of multiple linear regression analysis were R=0.881, F=216.102, P= .000 < 0.01. The results of this research show that gratitude and selfefficacy have a significant effect on the subjective well-being of kindergarten teachers. The findings of this research indicate that gratitude and self-efficacy are able to help individuals have a positive view of the challenges they face, which will encourage individuals to experience affective experiences. When people share their prosocial behavior on social media, they face a dilemma. By making prosocial disclosures, they risk being perceived as self-promoting or even selfish and thus less likable. By staying silent, they fail to spread awareness about prosocial activities they value. Drawing on attribution theory, we study the digital reaction of likes to the self-disclosure of prosocial activities that involve multiple stakeholders to understand the affordances and constraints of social media. Leveraging field data on a social networking site, we found that reporting a higher level of self-effort increases the digital reaction of likes. To our surprise, expressing gratitude for the sponsor's efforts also increased likes for such selfdisclosures. Through lab experiments that emulated this context, we dissected this paradox by separating the positive effect of expressing gratitude and the negative effect of sharing credit with other stakeholders on likes. Further, we underscore the salience of expressing gratitude, even when gratitude was extended to sponsors with bad reputations. Our study contributes to the design of a more humane digital world where individuals share and promote prosocial activities without compromising their likability and offers valuable insights for navigating the evolving landscape of social networking platforms. Objective: Treatment outcome monitoring typically emphasizes pathology. In contrast, we responded to the need to establish psychodynamic psychotherapy as evidence‐based by modeling changes in gratitude and forgiveness. Method: We utilized a practice‐based research design involving non‐manualized outpatient treatment. We employed a longitudinal mixture modeling approach to evaluate treatment effectiveness. We did so by testing the theorized role for relational virtues (i.e., gratitude, forgiveness) as signs of progress in psychodynamic treatment, with relational virtues referring to the application of character strengths to specific situations. We modeled clients' self‐reported level on the virtues as a joint process over five time points, and examined the influence of early treatment alliance correspondence on patterns of change using a sample of outpatient clients (N = 185; Mage = 40.12; 60% female; 74.1% White). Results: A 3‐class solution best fit the data, with one class exhibiting growth in gratitude and forgiveness, improved symptoms, and a greater likelihood of symptom improvement relative to well‐being gains. Alliance correspondence predicted the classes of change patterns, with greater similarity between clinicians' and clients' perceptions about the alliance predicting greater likelihood of belonging to the subgroup showing highest levels of virtues and well‐being, lowest symptoms, and improved well‐being. Conclusion: Clinical implications involve monitoring gratitude and forgiveness as signs of progress and navigating the dialectic between implicit alliance processes and explicit virtue interventions. The former involves nurturing a strong alliance and repairing ruptures, whereas the latter involves direct in‐session conversation and/or the practice of virtue interventions in and/or outside of session.
