Abstract

15O(α,γ)19Ne is regarded as one of the most important thermonuclear reactions in type I X-ray bursts. For studying the properties of the key resonance in this reaction using β decay, the existing Proton Detector component of the Gaseous Detector with Germanium Tagging (GADGET) assembly is being upgraded to operate as a time projection chamber (TPC) at FRIB. This upgrade includes the associated hardware as well as software and this paper mainly focusses on the software upgrade. Abstract

Excited states in Sn-133 were investigated through the beta decay of In-133 at the ISOLDE facility. The ISOLDE Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) provided isomer-selective ionization for In-133, allowing us to study separately, and in detail, the beta-decay branch of In-133 J(pi)= (9/2(+)) ground state and its J(pi) = (1/2(-)) isomer.Thanks to the large spin difference of the two beta-decaying states of In-133, it is possible to investigate separately the lower and higher spin states in the daughter, Sn-133, and thus to probe independently different single-particle and single-hole levels. We report here new gamma transitions observed in the decay of In-133, including those assigned to the deexcitation of the neutron-unbound states.

Abstract

We report on the observation of a microsecond isomeric state in the single-proton-hole, three-neutron-particle nucleus In-134. The nuclei of interest were produced by in-flight fission of a U-238 beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. The isomer depopulates through a gamma ray of energy 56.7(1) keV and with a half-life of T-1/2 = 3.5(4) mu s. Based on the comparison with shell-model calculations, we interpret the isomer as the I-pi = 5(-) member of the pi 0g(9/2)(-1) circle times nu 1f(7/2)(3) multiplet, decaying to the I-pi = 7(-) ground state with a reduced-transition probability of B(E2; 5(-) -> 7(-)) = 0.53(6) W.u. Observation of this isomer, and lack of evidence in the current work for a I-pi = 5(-) isomer decay in In-132, provides a benchmark of the proton-neutron interaction in the region of the nuclear chart >southeast> of Sn-132, where experimental information on excited states is sparse.

Abstract

Spin-isospin excitations in Nb-100 were studied via the Mo-100(t,He-3) charge-exchange reaction at 115 MeV/u with the goal to constrain theoretical models used to describe the isovector spin response of nuclei. The experiment was performed with a secondary beam of tritons, and He-3 particles were analyzed in the 5800 magnetic spectrometer. Decay by neutron emission from excited states in Nb-100 was observed by using plastic and liquid scintillator arrays. Differential cross sections were analyzed and monopole excitations were revealed by using a multipole decomposition analysis. The Gamow-Teller transition strength observed at low excitation energies, which is important for estimating the electron capture rate in astrophysical scenarios, was strongly fragmented and reduced compared to single-particle and spherical mean-field models. The consideration of deformation in the theoretical estimates was found to be important to better describe the fragmentation and strengths. A strong excitation of the isovector spin giant monopole resonance was observed, and well reproduced by the mean-field models. Its presence makes the extraction of Gamow-Teller strengths at high excitation energies difficult. The branches for statistical and direct decay by neutron emission were identified in the spectra. The upper limit for the branching ratio by direct decay (integrated over all observed excitations) was determined to be 20 +/- 6%. Even though the statistical uncertainties in the neutron-coincident data, were too large to perform detailed studies of the decay by neutron emission from individual states and resonances, the experiment demonstrates the feasibility of the method. Abstract

Excited states in the neutron-rich isotope Sn-133 were studied via the beta decay of In-133. Isomer selective ionization using the ISOLDE RILIS enabled the beta decays of In-133(gs) (I-pi = 9/2(+)) and In-133m (I-pi = 1/2(-)) to be studied independently for the first time. A description of the experimental setup at the ISOLDE Decay Station is presented together with preliminary results from the experiment.

Abstract

International audience; The advanced time-delayed γγ(t) method has been applied to determine half-lives of low-lying states in the N=50 isotones Ru94 and Pd96. The inferred experimental E2 strengths for the 4+→2+ transitions in the two nuclei show a dramatic deviation with respect to the shell model predictions in the (f5/2,p,g9/2) proton hole space in Sn100. The anomalous behavior can be ascribed to a breakdown of the seniority quantum number in the πg9/2n configuration due to particle-hole excitations across the N=Z=50 shell as confirmed by large-scale shell model calculations.

Near68Ni (Z=28, N=40), the identification of shape coexistence hinges on hitherto undetermined transition rates to and from low-energy 0+states. In68,70Ni, new lifetimes and branching ratios have been measured. These data enable quantitative descriptions of the 0+states through the deduced transition rates and serve as sensitive probes for characterizing their nuclear wave functions. The results are compared to, and consistent with, large-scale shell-model calculations which predict shape coexistence. With the firm identification of this phenomenon near68Ni, shape coexistence is now observed in all currently accessible regions of the nuclear chart with closed proton shells and mid-shell neutrons.

Abstract

X-ray bursts have been suggested as a possible site for the astrophysical rp-process. The time scale for the process is governed by β-decay half-lives of several even-even N = Z waiting point nuclei, in particular, N = Z = 40 80Zr. A 4.1(+0.8-0.6)-s β+/EC half-life for 80Zr was determined by observing delayed 84-keV γ rays depopulating a T1/2 = 4-μs isomer at 312 keV in the daughter 80Y. As this half-life is lower than many previously predicted values, the calculated excessive production of A = 80 nuclides in astrophysical x-ray burst scenarios is reduced, and less extreme conditions are necessary for the production of heavier nuclides.

Abstract

The reaction 54Cr + 248Cm was investigated at the velocity filter SHIP at GSI, Darmstadt, with the intention to study production and decay properties of isotopes of element 120. Three correlated signals were measured, which occurred within a period of 279 ms. The heights of the signals correspond with the expectations for a decay sequence starting with an isotope of element 120. However, a complete decay chain cannot be established, since a signal from the implantation of the evaporation residue cannot be identified unambiguously. Measured properties of the event chain are discussed in detail. The result is compared with theoretical predictions. Previously measured decay properties of even element super-heavy nuclei were compiled in order to find arguments for an assignment from the systematics of experimental data. In the course of this review, a few tentatively assigned data could be corrected. New interpretations are given for results which could not be assigned definitely in previous studies. The discussion revealed that the cross-section for production of element 120 could be high enough so that a successful Experiment seems possible with presently available techniques. However, a continuation of the experiment at SHIP for a necessary confirmation of the results obtained in a relatively short irradiation of five weeks is not possible at GSI presently. Therefore, we decided to publish the results of the measurement and of the review as they exist now. In the summary and outlook section we also present concepts for the continuation of Research in the field of super-heavy nuclei.

Abstract

The advanced time-delayed gamma gamma(t) method has been applied to determine half-lives of low-lying states in the N = 50 isotones Ru-94 and Pd-96. The inferred experimental E2 strengths for the 4(+) -> 2(+) transitions in the two nuclei show a dramatic deviation with respect to the shell model predictions in the (f(5/2), p, g(9/2)) proton hole space in Sn-100. The anomalous behavior can be ascribed to a breakdown of the seniority quantum number in the pi g(9/2)(n) configuration due to particle-hole excitations across the N = Z = 50 shell as confirmed by large-scale shell model calculations., QC 20170222

Abstract

Near shell closures, the presence of unexpected states at low energies provides a critical test of our understanding of the atomic nucleus. New measurements for the N=42 isotones Co2769 and Cu2971, along with recent data and calculations in the Ni isotopes, establish a full set of complementary, deformed, intruder states astride the closed-shell Ni28 isotopes. Nuclei with a one-proton hole or one-proton particle adjacent to Z=28 were populated in β-decay experiments and in multinucleon transfer reactions. A β-decaying isomer, with a 750(250)-ms half-life, has been identified in Co422769. It likely has low spin and accompanies the previously established 7/2- state. Complementary data for the levels of isotonic Cu422971 support the presence of a deformed, ΔJ=1 band built on the proton intruder 7/2- level at 981 keV. These data, together with recent studies of lower-mass Co and Cu isotopes and extensive work near Ni68, support the view that intruder states based on particle-hole excitations accompany all closed proton shells with Z≥28.
