Abstract

We experimentally study entangled two-photon absorption in Rhodamine 6G as a function of the spatial properties of a high flux of broadband entangled photon pairs. We first demonstrate a key signature dependence of the entangled two-photon absorption rate on the type of entangled pair flux attenuation: linear, when the laser pump power is attenuated, and quadratic, when the pair flux itself experiences linear loss. We then perform a fluorescence-based Z-scan measurement to study the influence of beam waist size on the entangled two-photon absorption process and compare this to classical single- and two-photon absorption processes. We demonstrate that the entangled two-photon absorption shares a beam waist dependence similar to that of classical two-photon absorption. This result presents an additional argument for the wide range of contrasting values of quoted entangled two-photon absorption cross-sections of dyes in literature.

Abstract

International audience; Carrying out toxicological investigations in biological samples (e.g. hair) collected from extensively decomposed bodies and even more interpretation of subsequently obtained results is challenging, even more in some particular circumstances of death. In order to illustrate these pitfalls, we report the case of the exhumation of a methamphetamine body-packer. Autopsy examination of a 41-year-old man, one year after his burial, revealed the presence of 44 green pellets (7 out of 44 were torn) along all the gastrointestinal tract. A 6-cm long dark hair strand and pellets were sampled for toxicological analyses. Large toxicological screenings were applied to hair and pellets using both LC-MS/MS and LC-HRMS. Intact pellets contained around 10 g of methamphetamine (MA) with a purity ranging from 29 to 35 %. Positive hair results were amiodarone (4.12 ng/mg), desethylamiodarone (5.29 ng/mg) and methamphetamine (7.63 ng/mg). Methamphetamine pellets in gastrointestinal tract were consistent with the autopsy conclusion, i.e. fatal intoxication due to in corpore pellet rupture in a body-packer (the victim was initially deemed to have died from heart failure). In the absence of available data in the literature, amiodarone and metabolite presence in hair could putatively be the consequence of a chronic treatment. Methamphetamine hair concentration was similar to those observed in regular consumers. However, interpreting this hair result is challenging due to (i) the possibility of contamination by sweat at the time of death, and (ii) the probable contamination by putrefaction fluids. This latter hypothesis (artifactual contamination during the post-mortem period) is highly supported by high concentration of methamphetamine in decontamination bath, and even more by the absence of the major methamphetamine metabolite (amphetamine) in hair. As a conclusion, in this particular situation, the hair analysis result (presence of MA and concomitant absence of amphetamine) is in agreement with the previously-established cause of death.

Abstract

In this paper, we proposed near-infrared spectroscopy based on a Si photodetector equipped with a gold grating and extended the measurable wavelength range to cover 1200−1600 nm by improving a spectrum derivation procedure. In the spectrum derivation, photocurrent data during alteration of the incidence angle of the measured light were converted using a responsivity matrix R, which determines the spectroscopic characteristics of the photodetector device. A generalized inverse matrix of R was used to obtain the spectrum and to fit a situation where multiple surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peaks appeared in the scanning range. When light composed of two wavelengths, 1250 nm and 1450 nm, was irradiated, the two wavelengths were distinctively discriminated using the improved method.

Abstract

The results presented in this paper, based on the powder X-ray diffraction technique followed by Rietveld analyses, are devoted to the mechanism of silver incorporation in biphasic calcium phosphates. Results were confirmed by SEM observation. Samples were synthesized via the sol-gel route, followed by heat treatments. Two incorporation sites were highlighted: Ca2+ replacement by Ag+ into the calcium phosphates (HAp: hydroxyapatite and β-TCP: tricalcium phosphate), and the other as metallic silver Ag° nanoparticles (formed by autogenous reduction). The samples obtained were thus nanocomposites, written Ag°/BCP, composed of closely-mixed Ag° particles of about 100 nm at 400 °C (which became micrometric upon heating) and calcium phosphates, themselves substituted by Ag+ cations. Between 400 °C and 700 °C the cationic silver part was mainly located in the HAp phase of the composition Ca10−xAgx(PO4)6(OH)2−x (written Ag+: HAp). From 600 °C silver cations migrated to β-TCP to form the definite compound Ca10Ag(PO4)7 (written Ag+: TCP). Due to the melting point of Ag°, the doping element completely left our sample at temperatures above 1000 °C. In order to correctly understand the biological behavior of such material, which is potentially interesting for biomaterial applications, its complex doping mechanism should be taken into consideration for subsequent cytotoxic and bacteriologic studies.

Abstract

We experimentally investigate fluctuations in the spectrum of ultrashort laser pulses propagating in air, close to the critical power for filamentation. Increasing the laser peak power broadens the spectrum while the beam approaches the filamentation regime. We identify two regimes for this transition: In the center of the spectrum, the output spectral intensity increases continuously. In contrast, on the edges of the spectrum the transition implies a bimodal probability distribution function for intermediate incident pulse energies, where a high-intensity mode appears and grows at the expense of the original low-intensity mode. We argue that this dual behavior prevents the definition of a univoquial threshold for filamentation, shedding a new light on the long-standing lack of explicit definition of the boundary of the filamentation regime., 8 pages, 5 figures
