Abstract

Appendiceal mucormycosis is a rare life-threatening infection seen in immunocompromised patients. It is usually seen in chemotherapy induced neutropenia in patients with hematological malignancies. Clinically, the symptoms and signs may be masked due to ongoing corticosteroids. The condition may mimic bacterial appendicitis and the less serious condition, typhlitis. The disease demands prompt surgical debulking and aggressive antifungal treatment. However, surgery is delayed due to the poor performance status and severe neutropenia. This may lead to perforative peritonitis and further dissemination. The survival rates of such disease are dismal. Unfortunately, the diagnosis may be confirmed only on histological examination of the surgically excised tissue. Very few cases have been reported so far. We present here once such a fatal case of appendiceal mucormycosis in a 14-year-old boy who was immunosuppressed due to intensive induction therapy for Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia.

Abstract

The paper presents the design and circuit realization of an optimized fractional-order PID controller (FOPID) for speed control of a permanent magnet brushless direct current (BLDC) motor. Here, the FOPID controller is designed using the Nelder-Mead optimization algorithm. The servo-regulatory performance of the BLDC motor using the FOPID controller is compared with integer-order PID controllers, which are designed using tuning methods like Ziegler Nichols, Astrom-Hagglund, Cohen-Coon, and Chien-Hrones-Reswick method. The FOPID controller circuit is realized using Operational Transconductance Amplifiers (OTAs) and capacitors in Cadence Virtuoso Analog Design Environment using GPDK 180 nm technology and simulated using Spectre circuit simulator. The circuit realization is based on the multiple-loop-feedback structure. The OTA-C realization facilitates advantages like electronic tunability, resistor-less, and on-chip realization capability. The time and frequency domain performance measures of the OTA-C FOPID controller with the BLDC motor are evaluated using the Cadence software and compared with the theoretical plots. Finally, a modified OTA-C circuit with reduced active element count is used, and its performance is evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper, new Gm-C all-pass and amplitude-equalizer biquads are shown to be realized from a generalized Gm-C biquad filter structure by using Gm-simulated negative resistor in series with integrating capacitor in the lossless integrator. The non-ideality analysis of the all-pass/ amplitude-equalizer biquad using finite output conductance and parasitic output capacitance of Gm-cells is presented. The proposed Gm-C all-pass and amplitude-equalizer biquads are simulated for 0.18 μm CMOS technology with ± 0.9 V power supply in Cadence environment to validate the frequency response characteristics. For the Gm-C AP biquad filter designed for 1 MHz cut-off frequency and pole quality factor of 2, the power consumption is 82.37 µW, the input-referred noise is 137.6 μ V / H z and the dynamic range is 62.84 dB. Abstract

The “game changer” Hydroxychloroquine (HCN) has been regarded as a potential medication and a trial resort for COVID-19 treatment.The effluents containing elevated levels of HCN discharged from human waste and production sites pose considerable concern over aquatic ecosystems. In this regard, we have designed alkali metal tantalates ATaO3(A= Na and K) based metal oxides synthesized via NADES abetted hydrothermal approach anchored to functionalized carbon nanofiber resulting in an efficient electrocatalyst. Utilizing Thymol-Menthol NADES as a solvent medium marks 100 % atom economy and provides the metal oxides with spectacular characteristics. The effective electrochemical sensing of the HCN was investigated through cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance study by comparing the bare and the fabricated electrodes. Among the fabricated sensors, the excellent conjunction of NaTaO3and F-CNF with plenty of surface-active sites provides a pronounced rapid charge transfer kinetics response. Furthermore, the comprehensive investigation of NaTaO3/F-CNF electrode benefits from an inclusive concentration range 0.001–141.16 µM, low detection limit 2.1 nM, good reproducibility, and good operational stability. These key factors point to the practical viability of the modified sensor toward the complete assessment of the HCN drug in real-time samples that unveil acceptable recovery results and mark its use in clinical science.

188. Frontal Deficits in Alcoholism: An ERP Study

Abstract

Alcoholism is a major health problem afflicting people all over the world. Understanding the neural substrates of this addictive disorder may provide the basis for effective interventions. So-called ''executive processes'' play a role in cognitive functions like attention and working memory, and appear to be disrupted in alcoholism (Noel et al., 2001). Event related potentials (ERPs) provide an excellent, minimally invasive technique for exploring these neural deficits. The current study used the P300 in number sequencing task (modified version of the Petrides & Milner, 1982) requiring working memory to compare a group of patients with alcoholism and frontal lobe lesions to patients with subcortical lesions and normal controls to assess the relationship of alcoholism to frontal lobe damage. The ERP paradigm was a Number Sequencing task. Electrophysiological results indicate that the frontal lesion group had significant P300 amplitude reduction and a similar trend for alcohol dependent group but not the subcortical group compared to the normal controls.

Abstract

The modern revolution in the day-to-day lifestyle of the present world, outlooks for patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome (COVID-19), which stands hallmark for several autoimmune conditions, including rheumatic diseases that marks the aphorism “Sooner the Better” to treatments. From this viewpoint, hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) was recognized as a significant first-line agent and a potential choice for the clinical reliever. The long-term overexploitation of HCQ, however, poses significant health risks to humans and aquatic organisms, resulting in the contamination of water systems and impaired ecosystem functions. In this work, we synthesized thymol–menthol-based solvent-assisted synthesis of perovskite-type stannates TSnO3(T = Ca and Sr) viaco-precipitation route and incorporated to functionalized carbon nanofibers (f-CNF) resulting in hierarchical CaSnO3/f-CNF and SrSnO3/f-CNF nanocomposite structures. By replacing conventional volatile toxic solvents with a sustainable green template (thymol–menthol NADES), the overall energy requirement is minimized, thus allowing the reaction to be carried out at lower temperatures. Structural characterization studies of the as-prepared samples revealed excellent surface and functional properties. The electrochemical behaviors were examined by CV using CaSnO3/f-CNF and SrSnO3/f-CNF-modified GCEs. When compared to SrSnO3/f-CNF modified electrode, CaSnO3/f-CNF revealed excellent electrochemical activity. This is due to the excellent snowflake-shaped morphology associated with rapid charge transfer associated with a large number of surface-active sites present in CaSnO3/f-CNF. Significantly, the corresponding analytical curves exhibited a wide linear detecting range of 0.001–129.5 μM and a low detection limit of 4.5 nM. Significant recognition of HCQ in environmental samples at trace levels validates the practicability of the fabricated sensor.
