Abstract

The crystal structure of Ce0.8Gd0.1Ho0.1O1.9 (cerium gadolinium holmium oxide) has been determined from powder X‐ray diffraction data. This is a promising material for application as a solid electrolyte for intermediate‐temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT‐SOFCs). Nanoparticles were prepared using a novel sodium alginate sol‐gel method, where the sodium ion was exchanged with ions of interest and, after washing, the gel was calcined at 723 K in air. The crystallographic features of Gd and Ho co‐doped cerium oxide were investigated around the desired operating temperatures of IT‐SOFCs, i.e. 573 ≤ T ≤ 1023 K. We find that the crystal structure is a stable fluorite structure with the space group Fmm in the entire temperature range. In addition, the trend in lattice parameters shows that there is a monotonic increase with increasing temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this study, a steady state, three-dimensional, multiphase CFD modeling of a pilot-plant counter-current spray drying tower is carried out to study the drying of detergent slurry and to predict spray-dried detergent powder characteristics. The coupling between the two phases is achieved using the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. The continuous phase turbulence is modeled using the Reynolds stress transport model. The droplet drying kinetics is studied using a semi-empirical droplet/particle drying model. Emphasis is given on the modeling of particle-wall interaction by considering only the rebound effect and specifying the coefficient of restitution as a function of impact angle with wall surface roughness taken into account using a stochastic approach, as well as a function of moisture content. This influences the post-wall collision trajectories of particles, residence time distribution and the overall exchange of heat and mass transfer. The model predictions agree well with the measured outlet values of powder average temperature, moisture content and exhaust air temperature considering the complexity of the process and the measurements accuracy. Abstract

As the size of individual particles is reduced below several microns, the interparticle cohesive forces begin to play a major role in the bulk powder behavior. Fine powders generally exhibit poor flowability as well as an affinity to agglomerate and form clusters due to this cohesion. This clustering behavior of dry, binderless particles is known as auto-granulation and can often cause difficulties in processing and handling of powders. In this study, a titania powder is vibrated under controlled conditions to induce clustering and promote agglomerate growth. The amplitude and frequency of the mechanical vibration is varied to view the effect of the input energy on the equilibrium agglomerate size. Furthermore, the densities of the formed agglomerates are measured to investigate the role of consolidation as a mechanism of auto-granulation. Given that the size of the agglomerates formed by this auto-granulation process is affected by the balance between the cohesive energy of the particles and the disruptive energy of vibration, this work provides insight into the mechanism controlling the growth of these agglomerates to an equilibrium size. Abstract

The ion-exchange kinetics of Fe cations in aqueous solution with H from alginic acid have been analyzed in this study as a function of contact time lengths using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry analysis. The kinetic parameters have been evaluated using pseudo 1st or 2nd order models, and a consistent ion-exchange mechanism is suggested. Furthermore, an insight into the calcination of Fe ion-exchanged alginic acid process has been obtained by using simultaneous thermo-gravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry and high temperature X-ray diffraction. Abstract

The undesirable breakage of seeds during processing may result in quality degradation. Seeds experience a portfolio of shear and impact stresses as they flow through various machinery, and this may cause surface damage as well as integral damage. An in-depth study and understanding of the microscopic mechanisms of the various processes is needed to investigate and address the problem of breakage. The main aim of this work is to carry out a parametric study of the effect of sliding and rolling friction on the flow field of seeds in a seed coater device by modeling particles motion using Distinct Element Method (DEM). It was found that sliding friction plays an important role in changing the flow pattern and particles solid fraction in a specified measurement cell. However, study of particle rolling friction showed that flow pattern and solid fraction of particles will not be affected once the coefficient of rolling friction exceeds a value of 0.1. Abstract

The characterisation of cohesive powder flowability is often required for reliable design and consistent operation of powder processes. This is commonly achieved by mechanical testing techniques on bulk powder, such as shear test, but these techniques require a relatively large amount of powder and are carried out at large pre-consolidation loads. Many industrial cases require small amounts of powders to be handled and processed, such as filling and dosing of capsules. In other cases, the availability of testing powders could be a limiting issue. It has been shown that under certain circumstances, indentation on a cohesive powder bed by a blunt indenter can give a measure of the resistance to powder flow (Hassanpour and Ghadiri 2007). In the present work, the ball indentation process is analysed by numerical simulations using DEM in order to investigate the operation window of the process in terms of indenter size and penetration depth. The flow resistance of the assembly, commonly termed hardness, is evaluated for a range of sample quantities and operation variables. A sensitivity analysis of bed height reveals that a minimum bed height of 20 particle diameters is required in order to achieve reliable measurements of hardness. It is also found that indenter sizes with diameters smaller than 16 particle diameters exhibit fluctuations in powder flow stress measurements. As the indenter size decreases, it moves closer to the size of bed particles. Therefore, rearrangements at the single particle level influence the force on the indenter, resulting in fluctuations, and possible compaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
