Abstract

Supercrystalline nanocomposites (SCNCs) are a new category of hybrid materials consisting of inorganic nanoparticles surface-functionalized with organic ligands and with periodic nanostructures, featuring multi-functionality and able to reach exceptional mechanical properties. Although efforts have been made to explore their mechanical behavior, their response to cyclic loading remains to be unveiled. Here, the fatigue behavior of SCNCs with different degrees of organic crosslinking is investigated via nanoindentation. The nanocomposites’ fatigue life is assessed, and it emerges that SCNCs without crosslinking are more efficient in dissipating energy under cyclic loading and thus feature a longer fatigue life. Chipping is identified as the main fatigue failure mechanism, whereas different mechanisms, intrinsic or extrinsic, dominate in the indentation depth propagation, again depending on crosslinking.

159. Modeling of time-dependent mechanical behavior of oleic acid nanocomposites using nanoindentation

Abstract

Supercrystalline nanocomposites are a burgeoning class of hybrid inorganic–organic materials. Studies showed that self-assembly of iron oxide particles surface-functionalized with organic (e.g. oleic acid) ligands produces a supercrystalline nanocomposite with exceptional mechanical properties. Consequently, significant research has been conducted on these materials to experimentally characterize the mechanical properties of such materials. However, so far all modeling studies used time and rate independent elastoplastic material models. In the light of new experimental results, we propose to extent this view and use time-dependent models to capture viscoelastic behavior. To this end, we quantified this behavior using nanoindentation creep experiments and modeled it using a rheological network model with several parallel Maxwell branches and an additional elasto-plastic branch. We demonstrate how the parameters of such a model can be found using inverse analysis. With the calibrated material model, a good agreement of the time dependent behavior between simulation and experimental results is achieved. Thus, a method is provided to model time dependent behavior using complex non-classical experiments like nanoindentation.

Abstract

The properties of each food, composition, and structure affect the digestion and absorption of nutrients. Dietary fiber (DF), especially viscous DF, can contribute to a reduction in the glycemic response resulting from the consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods. Target and control of postprandial glycemic values are critical for diabetes prevention and management. Some mechanisms have been described for soluble DF action, from the increase in chyme viscosity to the production of short-chain fatty acids resulting from fermentation, which stimulates gastrointestinal motility and the release of GLP-1 and PYY hormones. The postprandial glycemic response due to inulin and resistant starch ingestion is well established. However, other soluble dietary fibers (SDF) can also contribute to glycemic control, such as gums, β-glucan, psyllium, arabinoxylan, soluble corn fiber, resistant maltodextrin, glucomannan, and edible fungi, which can be added alone or together in different products, such as bread, beverages, soups, biscuits, and others. However, there are technological challenges to be overcome, despite the benefits provided by the SDF, as it is necessary to consider the palatability and maintenance of their proprieties during production processes. Studies that evaluate the effect of full meals with enriched SDF on postprandial glycemic responses should be encouraged, as this would contribute to the recommendation of viable dietary options and sustainable health goals.

Abstract

In this paper, NICHE (Neutron Imaging for Cultural HEritage), the new neutron imaging facility of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) is shortly presented. We report on the main features of the beamline, the specifications of the detection set-up, and the performances of the imaging system. NICHE is installed at the TRIGA reactor of LENA (Laboratorio Energia Nucleare Applicata) Pavia University laboratory (Italy). The imaging facility was designed during 2020, installed in the spring 2021, and has been in operation since May 2021. NICHE is the first Italian neutron imaging station open to national external users through the INFN-CHNet network application system. NICHE allows users to obtain neutron radiographies and tomographies, thus allowing for morphological characterisation of samples. First results to highlight the potential of the facility are reported. In particular, we show the first results about spatial resolution measurement and 3D reconstruction to provide morphological analysis capabilities.

183. Long‐term effects produced by early treatment of Class III malocclusion with rapid maxillary expansion and facemask followed by fixed appliances: A multicentre retro‐prospective controlled study.

Abstract

Objective: To assess the short‐ and long‐term dentoskeletal effects of early Class III treatment with rapid maxillary expansion and facemask (RME/FM) followed by fixed appliances. Materials and Methods: A total of 44 patients (27 females, 17 males) treated consecutively with RME/FM were included from the archives of 3 centres. Three lateral cephalograms were available: T0 (before the start of RME/FM therapy, mean age 8.1 ± 1.8 years), T1 (immediately after RME/FM, mean age 9.8 ± 1.6 years), and T2 (long‐term observation, mean age 19.5 ± 1.6 years). A control group of 17 untreated Class III subjects (12 females and 5 males) also was selected. Between‐group statistical comparisons were performed with ANCOVA. Results: No statistically significant differences for any of the cephalometric variables were found at T0. In the short term, the treated group showed significant improvements in ANB (+2.9°), Wits appraisal (+2.7 mm), SNA (+1.8°) and SNB (−1.1°). A significant closure of CoGoMe angle (−1.3°) associated with smaller increments along Co‐Gn (−2.4 mm) also was found together with a significant increase in intermaxillary divergence (+1.3°). In the long‐term, significant improvements in ANB (+2.6°), Wits appraisal (+2.7 mm) and SNB (−1.7°) were recorded together with a significant closure of the CoGoMe angle (−2.9°). No significant long‐term changes in vertical skeletal relationships were found. Conclusions: RME/FM therapy was effective in improving Class III dentoskeletal relationships in the short term. These changes remained stable in the long‐term due mainly to favourable mandibular changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Carbonation is one of the main deleterious effects of reinforced concrete structures, as it creates a favorable condition for the reinforcement depassivation and, thus, facilitates the onset of the corrosive process. The phenomenon is directly influenced by the material void’s structure, which is affected by the consolidation of the mass in the fresh state, subject evaluated in this study. For this purpose, samples were made using two water to cement ratios and defining two different consolidation methods. Compressive strength tests were carried out for the mechanical characterization of the specimens, in addition to accelerated carbonation tests, monitoring the progress of the carbonated thickness using the phenolphthalein colorimetric indicator, during 98 days. Microstructural differences were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the lower the workability of the mixture, the greater the impacts on the compressive strength of the material, resulting from failures in the consolidation stage. Nevertheless, another behavior is observed when evaluating this effect in the advancement of the carbonation front, indicating that the voids structure of the material should not be evaluated only according to its volume, but also in terms of the pattern of its distribution, its morphology and its connectivity.
