Though rarely recognized as such, Emily Neville's It's Like This, Cat is perhaps the first work of American young adult fiction. Part of the new contemporary realism emerging in the 1960s and 1970s, the novel offers a first-person, slang-filled account of father-son struggles, awkward blind dates, and difficult choices for fourteen-year-old Dave, who roams New York City with his adopted cat. Paradoxically, Cat may have suffered from its unexpected Newbery win: that gold medal may have made the book less popular with teens and led scholars to overlook the novel's contributions to the emerging young adult genre.

In 2017, Jean-Claude Risset gave his archives to the PRISM laboratory. Thereby the researchers’ community will have soon at their disposal a fund, especially interdisciplinary art and science oriented. For the moment, the archives are divided into two main parts: one within scientific research and one within artistic creation activity. More specifically, Jean-Claude Risset’s own story shaped major interdisciplinary orientations: first of all, his pioneering research at Bell Labs, then back to “French reality” (his half-failure with Ircam and his difficulties concerning Marseille-Luminy), afterwards his quest for solutions as a political lever, especially through the Art-Science-Technology’s report in 1998, and finally his turning point with his CNRS 1998 Gold Medal, consequently increasing conferences and mostly concerts. In addition, the study of material aspects (sharing activities between the laboratory and his home, place and content of documentation, etc.) is also necessary to understand “Risset’s practice” of interdisciplinarity.

At present, China’s track and field sports are at the leading level in Asia, but there is no obvious advantage in the world sports world. In short, the level of Chinese track and field is not completely commensurate with the title of sports power. In order to make a breakthrough in world-class track and field competitions, China should pay attention to improving the scientific level of training and cultivate a track and field gold medal team with long-term advantages. Based on many years’ research experience in track and field, the author briefly analyzes the development status of track and field in China in recent years, and on this basis, studies related strategies to improve the level of track and field training.

The aim of the study was to determine how many Norwegian athletes who, during all the times they had achieved the European Athletics Championship 2020&mdash, Entry Standards (EAC20ES), were also ranked among the 20 all-time-best athletes at the ages of 15 and 18 years. The number of athletes who achieved the EAC20ES during their career, and the percentage of those who were among top 20 in the age groups 15 and 18 years, were determined from the Norwegian all-time-best results lists. A total of 202 athletes achieved the EAC20ES in the studied time period. Of these, 14.4% and 42.1% were ranked among the top 20 all-time best in one or more events at the ages of 15 and 18 years, respectively. However, among those who had won an international gold medal, these percentages were much higher. Eight out of 12 champions (66.7%) were ranked among the top 20 all-time best in one or more event at 15 years of age, and 11 of 12 champions (91.6%) were ranked among the top 20 all-time best at 18 years of age. Athletes that went on to win international championships typically performed better as adolescents compared to other athletes who also reach an international level as seniors. However, due to the low number of international champions, the date should be interpreted with caution.

Each year, the American College of Radiology (ACR) has awarded its highest honor, the ACR Gold Medal, to an individual for distinguished, extraordinary service to the ACR or to the discipline of radiology. While this prestigious award was established almost a century ago, only ten women have received the honor throughout its history. This article seeks to highlight the life and achievements of one of these women, Dr. Kay Vydareny. Despite encountering barriers facing women in the medical field during medical school and residency in the 1960-70s, Dr. Vydareny went on to embark on a remarkable, enduring career. Early in her career, she began to build a professional network of fellow women colleagues through the American Association of Women Radiologists (AAWR), eventually serving as AAWR President in 1984. In addition to the AAWR, she served in leadership roles in many professional radiological organizations including the ACR. She was elected the first female speaker of the ACR Council Steering Committee in 1993, served on the Board of Chancellors from 1995 to 2002, and was President in 2001. At the same time, she maintained a passion for medical education. In honor of her distinguished and extraordinary service to radiology full of many groundbreaking firsts, she was awarded the ACR Gold Medal in 2005. She was only the fifth woman ever to receive this award. Throughout her outstanding career, Dr. Vydareny has continually been a dedicated and thoughtful educator, mentor, and leader who has made a lasting impact on the field of radiology.

Egypt has been long reflected as one of the most attractive countries to visit because of its historical treasure. Egypt also has remarkable athletic performances in the world championship and the Olympics. Egypt's first recent Olympic gold medal was during the Athens Olympic Games. However, fans’ attendance at individual sporting events was not equivalent to fan presence at team sports. Related studies about fans' who participate in different sporting events focused on men’s sports, team sports, and professional sports ( Armstrong, 2007). The sports development pyramid model by Casey (1988), designed to analyze the stages of sports development, was used to understand more about the association of the significance ofspecific factorsthat Influence fans’, and fan attendance at different individual sporting events in Egypt. A survey initially designed by the researchers was used to collect insights from seven (7) sports journalists, and twenty-seven (27) national team head coaches from different countries, who attended the African and the Arab games held in Cairo, Egypt. The results showed a significant relationship between fan attendance and individual sporting events, public relations, social media, cultural, and the actions of the Egyptian National Governing Bodies (ENGB). The result of this study further suggests the importance of implementing marketing strategies to promote individual sport.

Because of the long history of the Finn Dinghy sailing class, the difference between a gold medal and a mediocre result often comes down to personal mistakes of the sailor, or to who has the most optimised equipment. Regarding the latter, the Finn class rules permit certain design variations of the hull, mast, sail and rudder. In the current contribution, we describe a method for developing a customised rudder system aimed at optimal performance during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Based on hydrodynamic analysis of existing rudder designs, an improved rudder geometry was developed. Based on the concept geometry, the rudder and tiller were structurally designed and manufactured to achieve high stiffness and sufficient strength, while respecting the minimum mass requirements as specified by the rules.

Diabetic retinopathy, which is the leading cause of blindness among working aged adults, is a serious health problem worldwide. As millions of people suffer from diabetic retinopathy, the need for an automated method of diabetic retinopathy detection to prevent lifelong blindness has long been recognized. Therefore, it's a key challenge to build an automated diagnosis system to detect such disease early and efficiently. For that purpose, we propose a deep-learning-based method to early detect diabetic retinopathy on fundus photography in this paper. The dataset of fundus images is provided by Aravind Eye Hospital in India through a featured competition on the Kaggle platform. Deep convolutional neural networks based on EfficientNet-B3 are utilized to simultaneously extract features from fundus images, where the severity level of diabetic retinopathy is subsequently identified through a regression method. The results show that our deep learning model can achieve an expert-level performance on diagnosing the severity level of diabetic retinopathy, with a quadratic weighted kappa score 0.935 on the private dataset. Such performance locates at the top 1% among all teams and can get a gold medal prize in the Kaggle competition.

In late 1933, L'Osservatore Romano fuelled an argument against Il Littoriale, mouthpiece of the Fascist sport policy, about women’s sport: the Vatican Italian-speaking newspaper was against the public women’s athletic meetings, and the “immoral” shorts dressed by the young Italian athletes, such as Ondina Valla, going-to-be the first Italian woman to win an Olympic gold medal (1936, Berlin). Which was the situation of Italian female sports, at that time? Which was the influence of new women models coming from US? What was considered “immoral” by conservative people in 1933 Italy watching a women’s athletic or swimming meeting? How Hollywood stars could help Ondina and her mates on the road of female emancipation? These are the questions this essay is going to answer, helped by a lot of historical images, useful to reconstruct a whole collective imagination.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the process of Jang Changsun’s winning gold medal in the 1966 Toledo World Amateur Wrestling Championship and its meaning. [Methods] Jang Changsun and Katsumura Yasuo who had competed with Jang Changsun for the gold medal were selected as participants, a player and an executive who had participated in the Championship were selected as informants. Data had been collected by in-depth interview were analyzed firstly by using the Patton(1991)’s data analysis method, and the following conclusions were obtained by comparing with preceding studies, press releases, reports etc. [Results] Jang Changsun won a gold medal through the three stages of desperate struggles. The first struggle was to loose weight. Jang Changsun lost three times more weight than other players through fasting treatment, intensive training and dehydration in order to secure an advantageous position in the competition. His second struggle was the sparring itself. He made his mind to win gold medal 2 years before the Championship and started to strengthen his physical fitness and polish up his techniques to fight with strong players from powerful nation of wrestling. He finished the sparring by winning 4 games and tieing 2 games resulting in the same deduction points with Katsumura. It was inevitable for him to fight desperately to lose weight again to get gold medal. He eventually won the gold medal by losing his weight until he fainted because of injuries and serious dehydration. [Conclusion] The first gold medalist Jang Changsun contributed a lot to development of Korean sports by offering chance to consider significance of improving elite player’s exercising environment, scientific coaching, gaining self-confidence to win medal, and realizing the importance of sports informations.

As the world continues to deal with the devasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) has resumed face-to-face education events… with an innovative virtual spin. SMA is excited to present the annual conference in Australia’s premier sporting city of Melbourne from 6 to 9 October 2021. While Australia’s borders remain closed, we welcome high profile international keynote speakers presenting virtually, complemented by an array of high calibre Australian keynote and invited speakers interacting face-to-face. All the usual educational and social components we love about the annual SMA conference will be there to enjoy. The adaptation and resurgence of outdoor forms of exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic has put a spotlight on sports like running and rowing which can be performed with relatively safe physical distancing. Many of Australia’s Olympic Gold medal winning rowers trained on Melbourne’s Yarra river leaving their medical teams to manage the long-recognised high prevalence of low back pain. In this issue, important recommendations to assist clinicians working with rowers is provided by the new consensus statement coauthored by world experts led by Dr Wilson …

Even though crowdsourcing emerges as a new business principle of many successful tourism apps, its underlying mechanism in tourism remains unexplored. This research note explores this topic with a qualitative design through interviews with stakeholders involved in a crowdsourcing tourism app, Gold Medal Tour Guide. Applying the grounded theory, researchers propose a framework of crowdsourcing in tourism apps consisting of six themes and 15 subthemes. The framework identifies the drive of crowdsourcing and discusses the complexities and contradictions in multi-stakeholder collaboration. The contextual impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the crowdsourcing phenomenon are also examined. The findings provide practical implications for tourism destinations to take advantage of the crowdsourcing mechanism for sustainable operation and development.

In late May–early June 2017, two international science and technology conferences on problems of water chemistry and chemistry monitoring at thermal and nuclear power plants were held. The participants of both the first conference held at OAO VTI and the second conference that took place at NITI formulated the problems of the development of the regulatory base and implementation of promising water treatment technologies and outlined the ways of improving the water chemistry and chemistry monitoring at TPPs and NPPs for the near future. It was pointed out that the new amine-containing VTIAMIN agent developed by OAO VTI had been successfully tested on the power-generating units equipped with steam–gas plants to establish the minimum excess of the film-forming amine in the power-generating unit circuit that ensures the protection of the metal as 5–10 μg/dm3. A flow-injection technique for the analysis of trace concentrations of chlorides was proposed; the technique applied to the condensate of the 1000-MW steam turbine of the NPP power-generating unit yields the results comparable with the results obtained by the ion chromatography and the potentiometric method using the solver electrode. The participants of the conferences were demonstrated new Russian instruments to analyze the water media at the TPPs and NPPs, including the total organic carbon analyzer and the analyzer of mineral impurities in the condensate and feed water, that won a gold medal at the 45th International Exhibition of Inventions held in Geneva this April.

Investor sentiment and attention are often linked to the same non-economic events making it difficult to understand why and how asset prices are affected. We disentangle these two potential drivers of investment behaviour by analysing a new dataset of medals for major participating countries and sponsor firms over four Summer Olympic Games. Existing studies focus only on investigating the effect of sports events and sentiment on stock market returns. We consider for the first time also the importance of investor attention and the effect on activity at the market and firm level. Our results show that trading volume and volatility is substantially reduced following Olympic success although returns appear to be largely unaffected. In the U.S., trading volume (realised volatility) during Olympics is over 24% (61%) lower than comparable periods of the year when Games do not take place. Each gold medal leads to a further decrease in volume of nearly 3% on average over the trading day following the award. These findings are in line with theories and evidence related to investor attention but cannot be easily explained on the basis of sentiment. Analysis of data from online search volumes and from surveys measuring investor sentiment, also suggest that the market impact of the Olympics is linked to changes in investor attention.

On the occasion of a symposium celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Zoological Society of Southern Africa (ZSSA), the history of the Society is outlined in terms of its different 'growth stages' under different political dispensations and geographical headquarters, of its 34 organized symposia and of the 34 outstanding zoologists who have been awarded the Society's highest honour, the Gold Medal. The office bearers of the ZSSA Council from its inception to the present are documented. Changes to the Society's journal and newsletter are briefly discussed. It is concluded that the Society faces 'midlife' with a solid foundation and positive future, hut complacency should be avoided. In particular, the Society's journal requires invigoration and enthusiastic commitment, particularly from high-ranking members, to submit excellent manuscripts to the journal, so as to boost its impact factor and allow it to become globally competitive. Over the course of my career, I have made numerous contributions related to semiconductor crystal growth and high performance optoelectronics over a vast region of the electromagnetic spectrum (ultraviolet to terahertz). In 2016 this cumulated in my receiving the Jan Czochralski Gold Medal award from the European Materials Research Society. This article is designed to provide a historical perspective and general overview of these scientific achievements, on the occasion of being honored by this award. These achievements would not have been possible without high quality crystalline substrates, and this article is written in honor of Jan Czochralski on the 100 th anniversary of his important discovery.

This article is about the work of Minnette De Silva, which made claims upon heritage and historical meaning through its concerns with craft. It investigates three facets of her oeuvre—her building, her writing and teaching, her design and handicraft—through the lens of her pictorial autobiography, The Life and Work of an Asian Woman Architect. She identified this remarkable publication as her ‘archives’, documenting in it her life and work (in the absence of a dedicated collection of records), and the equally notable twentieth-century sites and spheres through which she moved. Few careers invite critical investigation of South Asia's modern architectural forms and history as does that of De Silva, an understudied figure credited as a pioneer: a Sri Lanka Institute of Architects Gold Medal recipient, a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Associate, a co-founder of the journal MARG, a participant in the International Congress of Modern Architecture (CIAM), and an architect practising in a range of ...

Competition medals are one of the most readily available sources of expert opinion to wine consumers, yet the “expertise” of competition judges and efficacy of medals have been questioned in the literature. This paper reevaluates the relevance of gold medals using data from ten competitions and scores from two leading wine publications. The analysis begins by exploring differences in gold medal award rates across competitions while holding wine quality constant through paired comparisons, which are found to be substantial. Next, the relevance of gold medals as indicators of wine quality is assessed, using the average scores from Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator as surrogates for quality. By itself, knowledge that a wine is a gold medal winner appears to have little relevance, as these wines do not score significantly higher than other medal winners. However, evidence suggests that golds from some competitions may be more relevant than others. (JEL Classifications: L15, L66)
