Search

Devising metrics to assess translation quality has always been at the core of machine translation (MT) research. Traditional automatic reference-based metrics, such as BLEU, have shown correlations with human judgements of adequacy and fluency and have been paramount for the advancement of MT system development. Crowd-sourcing has popularised and enabled the scalability of metrics based on human judgements, such as subjective direct assessments (DA) of adequacy, that are believed to be more reliable than reference-based automatic metrics. Finally, task-based measurements, such as post-editing time, are expected to provide a more detailed evaluation of the usefulness of translations for a specific task. Therefore, while DA averages adequacy judgements to obtain an appraisal of (perceived) quality independently of the task, and reference-based automatic metrics try to objectively estimate quality also in a task-independent way, task-based metrics are measurements obtained either during or after performing a specific task. In this paper we argue that, although expensive, task-based measurements are the most reliable when estimating MT quality in a specific task; in our case, this task is post-editing. To that end, we report experiments on a dataset with newly-collected post-editing indicators and show their usefulness when estimating post-editing effort. Our results show that task-based metrics comparing machine-translated and post-edited versions are the best at tracking post-editing effort, as expected. These metrics are followed by DA, and then by metrics comparing the machine-translated version and independent references. From April to July 2018, a data sample at the peak energy of the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. This is the first data sample of the Belle~II experiment. Using Bhabha and digamma events, we measure the integrated luminosity of the data sample to be ($496.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 3.0$)~pb$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We uncover the existence of Dirac and exceptional points in waveguides made of anisotropic materials, and study the transition between them. Dirac points in the dispersion diagram appear at propagation directions where the matrix describing the eigenvalue problem for bound states splits into two blocks, sorting the eigenmodes either by polarization or by inner mode symmetry. Introducing a non-Hermitian channel via a suitable leakage mechanism causes the Dirac points to transform into exceptional points connected by a Fermi arc. The exceptional points arise as improper hybrid leaky states and, importantly, are found to occur always out of the anisotropy symmetry planes., Comment: 7 Figures

Radiation of leaky modes existing in anisotropic waveguides can be cancelled by destructive interference at special propagation directions relative to the optical axis orientation, resulting in fully bound states surrounded by radiative modes. Here we study the variation of the loci of such special directions in terms of the waveguide constitutive parameters. We show that the angular loci of the bound states is sensitive to several design parameters, allowing bound states to exist for a broad range of angular directions and wavelengths and suggesting applications in filtering and sensing., Comment: 4 figures

Waveguiding structures made of anisotropic media support bound states in the continuum (BICs) that arise when the radiation channel of otherwise semi-leaky modes is suppressed. Hitherto, only structures with optical axes aligned in symmetric orientations inside the waveguide plane, where BICs appear as lines in the momentum-frequency dispersion diagram, have been considered. Here we address settings where such symmetry is broken and unveil a number of fundamental new features. Weak and strong symmetry-breaking regimes are identified, corresponding to azimuthal and polar optical axes orientation asymmetries, respectively. The azimuthal symmetry-breaking is found to still preserve the existence loci of BICs in the momentum-frequency dispersion diagram as lines. However, all possible BICs become interferometric, while the polarization separable states that occur in symmetric settings cease to exist. The polar symmetry-breaking has stronger effects and transforms the BICs' existence loci from lines to points, which correspond to full-vector states that exist at discrete values of the optical axis orientation for a given wavelength. Such transformation results in fundamental changes in the topological properties of the radiated field around the BICs., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are radiationless localized states embedded in the part of the parameter space that otherwise corresponds to radiative modes. Many decades after their original prediction and early observations in acoustic systems, such states have been demonstrated recently in photonic structures with engineered geometries. Here, we put forward a mechanism, based on waveguiding structures that contain anisotropic birefringent materials, that affords the existence of BICs with fundamentally new properties. In particular, anisotropy-induced BICs may exist in symmetric as well as in asymmetric geometries; they form in tunable angular propagation directions; their polarization may be pure transverse electric, pure transverse magnetic or full vector with tunable polarization hybridity; and they may be the only possible bound states of properly designed structures, and thus appear as a discrete, isolated bound state embedded in a whole sea of radiative states., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

We report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of layered monoclinic arsenic sulfide (alpha-As2S3), aka mineral orpiment, under compression. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements performed in orpiment samples at high pressure and combined with ab initio calculations have allowed us to determine the equation of state and the tentative assignment of the symmetry of many Raman-active modes of orpiment. From our results, we conclude that no first-order phase transition occurs up to 25 GPa at room temperature; however, compression leads to an isostructural phase transition above 20 GPa. In fact, As coordination increases from threefold at room pressure to more than fivefold above 20 GPa. This increase in coordination can be understood as the formation of metavalent bonding at high pressure, which results in a progressive decrease of the electronic and optical bandgap, an increase of the dielectric tensor and Born effective charges, and a considerable softening of many high-frequency optical modes with pressure. The formation of metavalent bonding may also explain the behavior of other group-15 sesquichalcogenides under compression. Moreover, our results suggest that group-15 sesquichalcogenides either show metavalent bonding at room pressure or undergo a transition from p-type covalent bonding at room pressure towards metavalent bonding at high pressure, as a preceding phase towards metallic bonding at very high pressure., Comment: 12 figures in the main manuscript

Nonrelativistic string theory is described by a sigma model with a relativistic worldsheet and a nonrelativistic target spacetime geometry, that is called string Newton-Cartan geometry. In this paper we obtain string Newton-Cartan geometry as a limit of the Riemannian geometry of General Relativity with a fluxless two-form field. We then apply the same limit to relativistic string theory in curved background fields and show that it leads to nonrelativistic string theory in a string Newton-Cartan geometry coupled to a Kalb-Ramond and dilaton field background. Finally, we use our limiting procedure to study the spacetime equations of motion and the T-duality transformations of nonrelativistic string theory. This joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural, vibrational and electrical properties of rhombohedral SnSb2Te4 at high pressure unveils the internal mechanisms of its compression. The equation of state and the internal polyhedral compressibility, the symmetry and behavior of the Raman-active modes and the electrical behavior of this topological insulator under compression have been discussed and compared with the parent binary alpha-Sb2Te3 and SnTe compounds and with related ternary compounds. Our X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements together with theoretical calculations, which include topological electron density and electronic localization function analysis, evidence the presence of an isostructural phase transition around 2 GPa and a Fermi resonance around 3.5 GPa. The Raman spectrum of SnSb2Te4 shows vibrational modes that are forbidden in rocksalt SnTe; thus showing a novel way to experimentally observe the forbidden vibrational modes of some compounds. Additionally, since SnSb2Te4 is an incipient metal, like its parent binary compounds, we establish a new criterion to identify the recently proposed metavalent bonding in complex materials when different bond characters coexist in the system. Finally, SnSb2Te4 exhibits a pressure-induced decomposition into the high-pressure phases of its parent binary compounds above 7 GPa, which is supported by an analysis of their formation enthalpies. We have framed the behavior of SnSb2Te4 within the extended orbital radii map of BA2Te4 compounds, which paves the way to understand the pressure behavior and stability ranges of other layered van der Waals-type compounds with similar stoichiometry.

We construct free Lie algebras which, together with the algebra of spatial rotations, form infinite-dimensional extensions of finite-dimensional Galilei Maxwell algebras appearing as global spacetime symmetries of extended non-relativistic objects and non-relativistic gravity theories. We show how various extensions of the ordinary Galilei algebra can be obtained by truncations and contractions, in some cases via an affine Kac-Moody algebra. We construct Chern-Simons gravities in $(2+1)$-dimensional space-time considering the Stringy Galilei algebra both with and without non-central extensions. In the first case, there is an invariant and non-degenerate bilinear form, however, the field equations do not allow to express the spin connections in terms of the dreibeins. In the second case, there is no invariant non-degenerate bilinear form. Therefore, in both cases, we do not have an ordinary gravity theory. Instead, if we consider the stringy Newton-Hooke algebra with extensions as gauge group we have an invariant non-degenerate metric and from the field equations, we express the spin connections in terms of the geometric fields., Comment: 15 pages

Nonrelativistic string theory is a unitary, ultraviolet finite quantum gravity theory with a nonrelativistic string spectrum. The vertex operators of the worldsheet theory determine the spacetime geometry of nonrelativistic string theory, known as the string Newton-Cartan geometry. We compute the Weyl anomaly of the nonrelativistic string worldsheet sigma model describing strings propagating in a string Newton-Cartan geometry, Kalb-Ramond and dilaton background. We derive the equations of motion that dictate the backgrounds on which nonrelativistic string theory can be consistently defined quantum mechanically. The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a high-energy high-luminosity linear electron-positron collider under development. It is foreseen to be built and operated in three stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. It offers a rich physics program including direct searches as well as the probing of new physics through a broad set of precision measurements of Standard Model processes, particularly in the Higgs-boson and top-quark sectors. The precision required for such measurements and the specific conditions imposed by the beam dimensions and time structure put strict requirements on the detector design and technology. This includes low-mass vertexing and tracking systems with small cells, highly granular imaging calorimeters, as well as a precise hit-time resolution and power-pulsed operation for all subsystems. A conceptual design for the CLIC detector system was published in 2012. Since then, ambitious R&D programmes for silicon vertex and tracking detectors, as well as for calorimeters have been pursued within the CLICdp, CALICE and FCAL collaborations, addressing the challenging detector requirements with innovative technologies. We determine the unitary and anti-unitary Lagrangian and quantum symmetries of arbitrary abelian Chern-Simons theories. The symmetries depend sensitively on the arithmetic properties (e.g. prime factorization) of the matrix of Chern-Simons levels, revealing interesting connections with number theory. We give a complete characterization of the symmetries of abelian topological field theories and along the way find many theories that are non-trivially time-reversal invariant by virtue of a quantum symmetry, including $U(1)_k$ Chern-Simons theory and $(\mathbb Z_k)_\ell$ gauge theories. For example, we prove that $U(1)_k$ Chern-Simons theory is time-reversal invariant if and only if $-1$ is a quadratic residue modulo $k$, which happens if and only if all the prime factors of $k$ are Pythagorean (i.e., of the form $4n+1$), or Pythagorean with a single additional factor of $2$. The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. We study the Lie symmetries of non-relativistic and relativistic higher order constant motions, in $d$ spatial dimensions, like constant acceleration, constant rate-of-change -of-acceleration (constant jerk), and so on. In the non-relativistic case, these symmetries contain the $z=\frac 2N$ Galilean conformal transformations, where $N$ is the order of the differential equation that defines the constant motion. The dimension of this group grows with $N$. In the relativistic case the vanishing of the ($d+1$)-dimensional space-time relativistic acceleration, jerk, snap, ... , is equivalent, in each case, to the vanishing of a $d$-dimensional spatial vector. These vectors are the $d$-dimensional non-relativistic ones plus additional terms that guarantee the relativistic transformation properties of the corresponding $d+1$ dimensional vectors. In the case of acceleration there are no corrections, which implies that the Lie symmetries of zero acceleration motions are the same in the non-relativistic and relativistic cases. The number of Lie symmetries that are obtained in the relativistic case does not increase from the four-derivative order (zero relativistic snap) onwards. The general method introduced in a previous paperto build up a class of models invariant under generalization of Carroll and Galilei algebra is extended to systems including a set of Grassmann variables describing the spin degree of freedom. The models described here are based on a relativistic supersymmetric algebra with vector and scalar generators (VSUSY) . We describe the Universitat d'Alacant submissions to the word- and sentence-level machine translation (MT) quality estimation (QE) shared task at WMT 2018. Our approach to word-level MT QE builds on previous work to mark the words in the machine-translated sentence as \textit{OK} or \textit{BAD}, and is extended to determine if a word or sequence of words need to be inserted in the gap after each word. Our sentence-level submission simply uses the edit operations predicted by the word-level approach to approximate TER. Three-dimensional gauge theories coupled to fermions can develop interesting nonperturbative dynamics. Here we study in detail the dynamics of $SU(N)$ gauge theories coupled to a Dirac fermion in the rank-two symmetric and antisymmetric representation. We argue that when the Chern-Simons level is sufficiently small the theory develops a quantum phase with an emergent topological field theory. When the Chern-Simons level vanishes, we further argue that a baryon condenses and hence baryon symmetry is spontaneously broken. The infrared theory then consists of a Nambu-Goldstone boson coupled to a topological field theory. Our proposals also lead to new fermion-fermion dualities involving fermions in two-index representations. We make contact between our proposals and some recently discussed aspects of four-dimensional gauge theories. This leads us to a proposal for the domain wall theories of non-supersymmetric gauge theories with fermions in two-index representations. We study systematically various extensions of the Poincar\'e superalgebra. The most general structure starting from a set of spinorial supercharges $Q_\alpha$ is a free Lie superalgebra that we discuss in detail. We explain how this universal extension of the Poincar\'e superalgebra gives rise to many other algebras as quotients, some of which have appeared previously in various places in the literature. In particular, we show how some quotients can be very neatly related to Borcherds superalgebras. The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a proposed future high-luminosity linear electron-positron collider operating at three energy stages, with nominal centre-of-mass energies: 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV, and 3 TeV. Its aim is to explore the energy frontier, providing sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) and precision measurements of Standard Model processes with an emphasis on Higgs boson and top-quark physics. The opportunities for top-quark physics at CLIC are discussed in this paper. The initial stage of operation focuses on top-quark pair production measurements, as well as the search for rare flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) top-quark decays. It also includes a top-quark pair production threshold scan around 350 GeV which provides a precise measurement of the top-quark mass in a well-defined theoretical framework. At the higher-energy stages, studies are made of top-quark pairs produced in association with other particles. A study of ttH production including the extraction of the top Yukawa coupling is presented as well as a study of vector boson fusion (VBF) production, which gives direct access to high-energy electroweak interactions. Operation above 1 TeV leads to more highly collimated jet environments where dedicated methods are used to analyse the jet constituents. These techniques enable studies of the top-quark pair production, and hence the sensitivity to BSM physics, to be extended to higher energies. Nonrelativistic string theory in flat spacetime is described by a two-dimensional quantum field theory with a nonrelativistic global symmetry acting on the worldsheet fields. Nonrelativistic string theory is unitary, ultraviolet complete and has a string spectrum and spacetime S-matrix enjoying nonrelativistic symmetry. The worldsheet theory of nonrelativistic string theory is coupled to a curved spacetime background and to a Kalb-Ramond two-form and dilaton field. The appropriate spacetime geometry for nonrelativistic string theory is dubbed string Newton-Cartan geometry, which is distinct from Riemannian geometry. This defines the sigma model of nonrelativistic string theory describing strings propagating and interacting in curved background fields. We also implement T-duality transformations in the path integral of this sigma model and uncover the spacetime interpretation of T-duality. We show that T-duality along the longitudinal direction of the string Newton-Cartan geometry describes relativistic string theory on a Lorentzian geometry with a compact lightlike isometry, which is otherwise only defined by a subtle infinite boost limit. This relation provides a first principles definition of string theory in the discrete light cone quantization (DLCQ) in an arbitrary background, a quantization that appears in nonperturbative approaches to quantum field theory and string/M-theory, such as in Matrix theory. We introduce a general method to construct classes of dynamical systems invariant under generalizations of the Carroll and of the Galilei groups. The method consists in starting from a space-time in $D+1$ dimensions and partitioning it in two parts, the first Minkowskian and the second Euclidean. Tha action consist of two terms that are separately invariant the Minkwoskian and Euclidean partitioning. One of those contains a system of lagrangian multiplies that confine the system to a subspace. The other term defines the dynamics of the system. We study the dynamics of 2+1 dimensional theories with ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry. In these theories the supersymmetric ground states behave discontinuously at co-dimension one walls in the space of couplings, with new vacua coming in from infinity in field space. We show that the dynamics near these walls is calculable: the two-loop effective potential yields exact results about the ground states near the walls. Far away from the walls the ground states can be inferred by decoupling arguments. In this way, we are able to follow the ground states of ${\cal N}=1$ theories in 2+1 dimensions and construct the infrared phases of these theories. We study two examples in detail: Adjoint SQCD and SQCD with one fundamental quark. In Adjoint QCD we show that for sufficiently small Chern-Simons level the theory has a non-perturbative metastable supersymmetry-breaking ground state. We also briefly discuss the critical points of this theory. For SQCD with one quark we establish an infrared duality between a $U(N)$ gauge theory and an $SU(N)$ gauge theory. We consider a non-relativistic (NR) limit of $(2+1)$-dimensional Maxwell Chern-Simons (CS) gravity with gauge algebra [Maxwell] $\oplus \ u(1)\oplus u(1)$. We obtain a finite NR CS gravity with a degenerate invariant bilinear form. We construct the action of a non-relativistic spinning particle moving in a general torsionless Newton-Cartan background. The particle does not follow the geodesic equations, instead the motion is governed by the non-relativistic analog of Papapetrou equation. We study 2+1 dimensional gauge theories with a Chern-Simons term and a fermion in the adjoint representation. We apply general considerations of symmetries, anomalies, and renormalization group flows to determine the possible phases of the theory as a function of the gauge group, the Chern-Simons level $k$, and the fermion mass. We propose an inherently quantum mechanical phase of adjoint QCD with small enough $k$, where the infrared is described by a certain Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT). For a special choice of the mass, the theory has ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry. There this TQFT is accompanied by a massless Majorana fermion - a Goldstino signaling spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. Our analysis leads us to conjecture a number of new infrared fermion-fermion dualities involving $SU$, $SO$, and $Sp$ gauge theories. The effects of high pressure on the crystal structure of orthorhombic (Pnma) perovskite type cerium scandate have been studied in situ under high pressure by means of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, using a diamond anvil cell. We have found that the perovskite type crystal structure remains stable up to 40 GPa, the highest pressure reached in the experiments. The evolution of unit-cell parameters with pressure has indicated an anisotropic compression. The room-temperature pressure-volume equation of state is obtained from the experiments. From the evolution of microscopic structural parameters like bond distances and coordination polyhedra of cerium and scandium, the macroscopic behavior of CeScO3 under compression has been explained and reasoned for its large pressure stability. Zircon-type HoPO4 and TmPO4 have been studied by single-crystal x-ray diffraction and ab initio calculations. We report information on the influence of pressure on the crystal structure, and on the elastic and thermodynamic properties. The equation of state for both compounds is accurately determined. We have also obtained information on the polyhedral compressibility which is used to explain the anisotropic axial compressibility and the bulk compressibility. Both compounds are ductile and more resistive to volume compression than to shear deformation at all pressures. Furthermore, the elastic anisotropy is enhanced upon compression. Finally, the calculations indicate that the possible causes that make unstable the zircon structure are mechanical instabilities and the softening of a silent B1u mode., Comment: 43 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

The Poincar\'e algebra can be extended (non-centrally) to the Maxwell algebra and beyond. These extensions are relevant for describing particle dynamics in electro-magnetic backgrounds and possibly including the backreaction due the presence of multipoles. We point out a relation of this construction to free Lie algebras that gives a unified description of all possible kinematic extensions, leading to a symmetry algebra that we call Maxwell${}_\infty$. We construct two possible candidates for the non-relativistic $\mathfrak{bms}_4$ algebra in 4 space-time dimensions by contracting the original relativistic $\mathfrak{bms}_4$ algebra. The $\mathfrak{bms}_4$ algebra is infinite-dimensional, and it contains the generators of the Poincar\'e algebra, together with the so-called super-translations. Similarly, the proposed $\mathfrak{nrbms}_4$ algebras can be regarded as two infinite-dimensional extensions of the Bargmann algebra. We construct canonical realizations of the $\mathfrak{bms}_3$ algebra as symmetry algebras of a free Klein-Gordon (KG) field in $2+1$ dimensions, for both the massive and massless case. We consider two types of realizations, one on-shell, written in terms of the Fourier modes of the scalar field, and the other one off-shell with non-local transformations written in terms of the KG field and its momenta.
