- Abstract
Ultra-cool dwarf stars are abundant, long-lived, and uniquely suited to enable the atmospheric study of transiting terrestrial companions with JWST. Amongst them, the most prominent is the M8.5V star TRAPPIST-1 and its seven planets, which have been the favored targets of eight JWST Cycle 1 programs. While Cycle 1 observations have started to yield preliminary insights into the planets, they have also revealed that their atmospheric exploration requires a better understanding of their host star. Here, we propose a roadmap to characterize the TRAPPIST-1 system -- and others like it -- in an efficient and robust manner. We notably recommend that -- although more challenging to schedule -- multi-transit windows be prioritized to constrain stellar heterogeneities and gather up to 2$\times$ more transits per JWST hour spent. We conclude that in such systems planets cannot be studied in isolation by small programs, thus large-scale community-supported programs should be supported to enable the efficient and robust exploration of terrestrial exoplanets in the JWST era.

In parallel with the multi-messenger revolution, major advances in time-domain astronomy across multiple science disciplines relevant to astrophysics are becoming more urgent to address. Aside from electromagnetic observations of gravitational wave events and explosive counterparts, there are a number of "classical" astrophysical areas that require new thinking for proper exploration in the time domain. How NASA, NSF, ESA, and ESO consider the 2020 USA Decadal Survey within the astronomy community, as well as the worldwide call to support and expand time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics, it is crucial that all areas of astrophysics, including stellar, galactic, Solar System, and exoplanetary science participate in the discussion, and that it not be made into an exclusive preserve of cosmological, high-energy, explosive and transient science. Time domain astronomy is used to explore many aspects of astrophysics-particularly concerning ground- and space-based mission science goals of exploring how the Universe works, understanding how did we get here, and are we alone. Time domain studies are already built into the core operations of many currently operating and future space telescopes (e.g., Roman, PLATO) as well as current and planned large areal ground-based surveys (e.g., Rubin). Time-domain observations designed for one scientific purpose, also lead to great discoveries in many other science areas. The recent advent of user-friendly hardware, software, observational approaches, and online data infrastructure has also helped make time domain observations especially suitable and appealing for citizen science projects. We provide a review of the current state of TDAMM alerts and observational protocols, revealing a wide array of software and applications, much of which is incompatible. Any conversation regarding TDAMM astrophysics should include all aspects of the field, including those aspects seen as classical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Astrophysics ,Instrumentation And Photography - Abstract
NIRCam is the primary near-infrared camera for JWST. It is well-suited for a wide variety of star formation and other scientific studies and will also be used for aligning the JWST primary mirror segments and telescope. NIRCam will provide high sensitivity, high spatial resolution images in a variety of filters over the 0.6 - 5 μm wavelength region including coronagraphic modes and slitless spectroscopic capabilities. NIRCam consists of two identical optical modules that have adjacent 2.2' x 2.2' fields of view on the sky. Each module is composed of two channels that observe the same field at short (< 2.4 μm) or long (> 2.4 μm) wavelengths simultaneously, with optimized spatial sampling in each channel. NIRCam optical elements include narrow (R = 100), medium (R = 10), and wide (R <= 4) filters, coronagraphic imaging spot and bar masks, and grisms that provide wide-field or time-series slitless spectroscopy. These major NIRCam features will be introduced, and some applications to galactic star formation will be briefly presented.

- Abstract
WASP-107b is a warm (approximately 740 K) transiting planet with a Neptune-like mass of roughly 30.5 M⊕and Jupiter-like radius of about 0.94 RJ(refs. 1,2), whose extended atmosphere is eroding3. Previous observations showed evidence for water vapour and a thick, high-altitude condensate layer in the atmosphere of WASP-107b (refs. 4,5). Recently, photochemically produced sulfur dioxide (SO2) was detected in the atmosphere of a hot (about 1,200 K) Saturn-mass planet from transmission spectroscopy near 4.05 μm (refs. 6,7), but for temperatures below about 1,000 K, sulfur is predicted to preferably form sulfur allotropes instead of SO2(refs. 8–10). Here we report the 9σdetection of two fundamental vibration bands of SO2, at 7.35 μm and 8.69 μm, in the transmission spectrum of WASP-107b using the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) of JWST. This discovery establishes WASP-107b as the second irradiated exoplanet with confirmed photochemistry, extending the temperature range of exoplanets exhibiting detected photochemistry from about 1,200 K down to about 740 K. Furthermore, our spectral analysis reveals the presence of silicate clouds, which are strongly favoured (around 7σ) over simpler cloud set-ups. Furthermore, water is detected (around 12σ) but methane is not. These findings provide evidence of disequilibrium chemistry and indicate a dynamically active atmosphere with a super-solar metallicity.

Transmission spectroscopy of transiting exoplanets provides our current best opportunity to study exoplanetary atmospheres, particularly those of smaller exoplanets. However, stellar photospheric heterogeneity due to spots and faculae complicates these studies by introducing spectral signals that can mimic or mask planetary features. The Pandora SmallSat Mission, selected in 2021 as part of NASA’s Astrophysics Pioneers Program, is designed to study the atmospheres of planets transiting active, low-mass stars by disentangling stellar and planetary signals in transmission spectra. Here we provide an overview of Pandora with a focus on the science enabled by its unique multiwavelength dataset. Pandora will observe multiple transits of at least 20 exoplanets with sizes ranging from Earth-size to Jupiter-size and host stars spanning mid-K to late-M spectral types. Pandora will collect long-duration photometric observations with a visible-light channel and simultaneous spectra with a near-IR channel. The broad wavelength coverage will provide constraints on the spot and faculae covering fractions of low-mass exoplanet host stars and the impact of these active regions on transmission spectra. Pandora will subsequently identify exoplanets with hydrogen- or water-dominated atmospheres and robustly determine which planets are covered by clouds and hazes. Pandora’s legacy will be a library of long-duration, simultaneous multiwavelength observations and a catalog of benchmark planets that will aid in target selection and data analysis for JWST and future exoplanet missions. The project is made possible by leveraging investments in other projects, including an all-aluminum 0.45-m Cassegrain telescope design and a NIR sensor chip assembly from JWST. The mission will last five years from initial formation to closeout, with one year of science operations. Launch is planned for the mid-2020s as a secondary payload in a Sun-synchronous low-Earth orbit. This timeline will ensure both rapid scientific results and operational overlap with TESS, HST, and JWST, enabling synergistic studies.

188. Violence Affecting School Employees.

Kondrasuk, Jack N., Greene, Thomas, Waggoner, Jacqueline, Edwards, Kristen, and NaYak-Rhodes, Aradhana
- Abstract
A review of the literature shows significant violence (both physical and verbal threats) in schools in the United States (U.S.). Almost all of the studies focus on violence by students and against students. There is very limited information about violence involving employees in the schools even though teachers are three times more likely to be attacked than are students on a per capita basis. The purpose of this study was to understand the extent, causation, and reduction of violence against school employees in a metropolitan area. Administrators of all schools (K-12, vocational schools, and colleges) in a 4-county, 2-state metropolitan area were surveyed. The results of the survey found that violence in the Portland metropolitan area was not as prevalent as nationwide trends indicate. However, most respondents believed violence would continue at the present level into the future. More research needs to be conducted about violence against school employees, but it should carefully consider the geographical area and the type of respondents.

189. A Tale of Two Students: Building a Culture of Engagement in the Community College
- Author
-
McClenney, Kay M. and Greene, Thomas
- Abstract
In this article, the authors present two stories that depict the best and worst of times experienced by today's community college students. Within these narratives are both vestiges of the past--pieces that some colleges have yet to fully discard--and exemplars of a potentially brighter, more engaging future. While they are fictitious, these vignettes describe composite student experiences, both positive and negative, that are not atypical in community colleges. The stories are supported by findings from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) and from twenty-four student focus groups conducted by CCSSE staff in 2003 and 2004. The authors hope that these vignettes will convey the importance of accurately understanding students' experiences at each college as they are told through systematically gathered evidence. In particular, the stories reinforce the critical importance of engaging students--connecting them early and often to one another, to faculty and staff, and to the subject matter of their studies. If nothing else, the stories emphasize the reality that in community colleges, given the multiple commitments of their students and the challenges they bring with them to college, engagement does not happen by accident but by design. - Abstract
Medieval scholars write often about frontiers, but infrequently about borderlands. In this essay I bring together medieval studies and borderland studies, specifically the work of Gloria Anzaldúa, to read anew the Gesta Sanctorum Rotonensium (Deeds of the Holy Men of Redon). This late ninth century text describes the establishment (in 832) and early history of the monastery of Redon, which took place within multiple, overlapping, and contested borders. By translating Anzaldúa’s nepantla into a ninth-century idiom, I read the Gesta as a borderlands text, written by and for residents of the Frankish-Breton borderlands. The fluidity of this borderlands region, I argue, fostered the conflict and becoming essential to nepantla. This enabled the monks to formulate a transgressive identity, and community, that worked around and between and sometimes against both secular and ecclesiastical power.

- Abstract
© 2019. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved. We present new observations of the multiplanet system HIP 41378, a bright star (V = 8.9, K s = 7.7) with five known transiting planets. Previous K2 observations showed multiple transits of two Neptune-sized bodies and single transits of three larger planets (R P = 0.33R J, 0.47R J, 0.88R J). K2 recently observed the system again in Campaign 18 (C18). We observe one new transit each of two of the larger planets d/f, giving maximal orbital periods of 1114/1084 days, as well as integer divisions of these values down to a lower limit of about 50 days. We use all available photometry to determine the eccentricity distributions of HIP 41378 d & f, finding that periods ≲300 days require non-zero eccentricity. We check for overlapping orbits of planets d and f to constrain their mutual periods, finding that short periods (P < 300 days) for planet f are disfavored. We also observe transits of planets b and c with Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera (IRAC), which we combine with the K2 observations to search for transit timing variations (TTVs). We find a linear ephemeris for planet b, but see a significant TTV signal for planet c. The ability to recover the two smaller planets with Spitzer shows that this fascinating system will continue to be detectable with Spitzer, CHEOPS, TESS, and other observatories, allowing us to precisely determine the periods of d and f, characterize the TTVs of planet c, recover the transits of planet e, and further enhance our view of this remarkable dynamical laboratory.
