We present the results of simultaneous 450 $\mu$m and 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the massive star forming region NGC 2071IR, a target of the BISTRO (B-fields in Star-Forming Region Observations) Survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and SCUBA-2 camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find a pinched magnetic field morphology in the central dense core region, which could be due to a rotating toroidal disk-like structure and a bipolar outflow originating from the central young stellar object, IRS 3. Using the modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we obtain a plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of 563$\pm$421 $\mu$G in the central $\sim$0.12 pc region from 850 $\mu$m polarization data. The corresponding magnetic energy density of 2.04$\times$10$^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-3}$ is comparable to the turbulent and gravitational energy densities in the region. We find that the magnetic field direction is very well aligned with the whole of the IRS 3 bipolar outflow structure. We find that the median value of polarization fractions, 3.0 \%, at 450 $\mu$m in the central 3 arcminute region, which is larger than the median value of 1.2 \% at 850 $\mu$m. The trend could be due to the better alignment of warmer dust in the strong radiation environment. We also find that polarization fractions decrease with intensity at both wavelengths, with slopes, determined by fitting a Rician noise model, of $0.59 \pm 0.03$ at 450 $\mu$m and $0.36 \pm 0.04$ at 850 $\mu$m, respectively. We think that the shallow slope at 850 $\mu$m is due to grain alignment at the center being assisted by strong radiation from the central young stellar objects., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

In a recent article, Huda et al. demonstrated tuneable topological domain wall states in the c(2$\times$2) chlorinated Cu(100). Their system allows to experimentally tune the domain wall states using atom manipulation by the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). They have realized topological domain wall states of two prototypical 1D models such as trimer and coupled dimer chains. However, they did not distinguish trivial domain wall states from topological ones in their models. As a result, all states of a specific domain wall are not topological but trivial. Here, we show why the specific domain wall states are trivial and how to make them topological. This topological consideration would provide more clear insight on future studies on topological domain wall states in artificial atomic chains.

Investigating the effects of the complex magnetic interactions on the formation of nontrivial magnetic phases enables a better understanding of magnetic materials. Moreover, an effective method to systematically control those interactions and phases could be extensively utilized in spintronic devices. SrRuO3 heterostructures function as a suitable material system to investigate the complex magnetic interactions and the resultant formation of topological magnetic phases, as the heterostructuring approach provides an accessible controllability to modulate the magnetic interactions. In this study, we have observed that the Hall effect of SrRuO3/SrTiO3 superlattices varies nonmonotonically with the repetition number (z). Using Monte Carlo simulations, we identify a possible origin of this experimental observation: the interplay between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and dipole-dipole interaction, which have differing z-dependence, might result in a z-dependent modulation of topological magnetic phases. This approach provides not only a collective understanding of the magnetic interactions in artificial heterostructures but also a facile control over the skyrmion phases., Comment: 3 figures

We have obtained sensitive dust continuum polarization observations at 850 $\mu$m in the B213 region of Taurus using POL-2 on SCUBA-2 at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), as part of the BISTRO (B-fields in STar-forming Region Observations) survey. These observations allow us to probe magnetic field (B-field) at high spatial resolution ($\sim$2000 au or $\sim$0.01 pc at 140 pc) in two protostellar cores (K04166 and K04169) and one prestellar core (Miz-8b) that lie within the B213 filament. Using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we estimate the B-field strengths in K04166, K04169, and Miz-8b to be 38$\pm$14 $\mu$G, 44$\pm$16 $\mu$G, and 12$\pm$5 $\mu$G, respectively. These cores show distinct mean B-field orientations. B-field in K04166 is well ordered and aligned parallel to the orientations of the core minor axis, outflows, core rotation axis, and large-scale uniform B-field, in accordance with magnetically regulated star formation via ambipolar diffusion taking place in K04166. B-field in K04169 is found to be ordered but oriented nearly perpendicular to the core minor axis and large-scale B-field, and not well-correlated with other axes. In contrast, Miz-8b exhibits disordered B-field which show no preferred alignment with the core minor axis or large-scale field. We found that only one core, K04166, retains a memory of the large-scale uniform B-field. The other two cores, K04169 and Miz-8b, are decoupled from the large-scale field. We present that a statistical method known as the Complexity-Entropy analysis is useful to characterize a state of plasma turbulence and flux in the resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) edge localized mode (ELM) control experiment. The RMP ELM suppression phase with the stochastic pedestal top temperature fluctuation can be distinguished from the natural ELM free phase with the chaotic fluctuation. It is discussed that the stochastic temperature fluctuation localized near the pedestal top can be originated from the narrow layer of the field penetration near the pedestal top. The forced magnetic island can emit the resonant drift wave of comparable sizes (relatively low-k) in the RMP ELM suppression phase, and it can results in the generation of stochastic higher wavenumber fluctuations coupled to tangled fields around the island. The analysis of the ion saturation current measurement around the main outer striking point on the divertor shows that it also becomes more stochastic as the stronger plasma response to the RMP field is expected.

A strong correlation between magnetic interaction and topological symmetries leads to unconventional magneto-transport behavior. Weyl fermions induce topologically protected spin-momentum locking, which is closely related to spin-wave gap formation in magnetic crystals. Ferromagnetic SrRuO3, regarded as a strong candidate for Weyl semimetal, inherently possesses a nonzero spin-wave gap owing to its strong magnetic anisotropy. In this paper, we propose a method to control the spin-wave dynamics by nanolayer designing of the SrRuO3/SrTiO3 superlattices. In particular, the six-unit-cell-thick SrRuO3 layers within the superlattices undergo a phase transition in crystalline symmetry from orthorhombic to tetragonal, as the thickness of the SrTiO3 layers is modulated with atomic-scale precision. Consequently, the magnetic anisotropy, anomalous Hall conductivity, and spin-wave gap could be systematically manipulated. Such customization of magnetic anisotropy via nanoscale heterostructuring offers a novel control knob to tailor the magnon excitation energy for future spintronic applications, including magnon waveguides and filters. SrRuO3 (SRO) is an itinerant ferromagnet with strong coupling between the charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. This strong coupling suggests that the electronic and magnetic behaviors of SRO are highly susceptible to changes in the lattice distortion. Here we show how the spin interaction and resultant magnon formation change with the modification in the crystallographic orientation. We fabricated SRO epitaxial thin films with (100), (110), and (111) surface orientations, to systematically modulate the spin interaction and spin dimensionality. The reduced spin dimensionality and enhanced exchange interaction in the (111)-oriented SRO thin film significantly suppresses magnon formation. Periocular biometric, the peripheral area of the ocular, is a collaborative alternative to the face, especially when the face is occluded or masked. However, in practice, sole periocular biometric capture the least salient facial features, thereby lacking discriminative information, particularly in wild environments. To address these problems, we transfer discriminatory information from the face to support the training of a periocular network by using knowledge distillation. Specifically, we leverage face images for periocular embedding learning, but periocular alone is utilized for identity identification or verification. To enhance periocular embeddings by face effectively, we proposeConsistent Knowledge Distillation (CKD) that imposes consistency between face and periocular networks across prediction and feature layers. We find that imposing consistency at the prediction layer enables (1) extraction of global discriminative relationship information from face images and (2) effective transfer of the information from the face network to the periocular network. Particularly, consistency regularizes the prediction units to extract and store profound inter-class relationship information of face images. (3) The feature layer consistency, on the other hand, makes the periocular features robust against identity-irrelevant attributes. Overall, CKD empowers the sole periocular network to produce robust discriminative embeddings for periocular recognition in the wild. We theoretically and empirically validate the core principles of the distillation mechanism in CKD, discovering that CKD is equivalent to label smoothing with a novel sparsity-oriented regularizer that helps the network prediction to capture the global discriminative relationship. We report the first high spatial resolution measurement of magnetic fields surrounding LkH$\alpha$ 101, a part of the Auriga-California molecular cloud. The observations were taken with the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope within the framework of the B-fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. Observed polarization of thermal dust emission at 850 $\mu$m is found to be mostly associated with the red-shifted gas component of the cloud. The magnetic field displays a relatively complex morphology. Two variants of the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, unsharp masking and structure function, are used to calculate the strength of magnetic fields in the plane of the sky, yielding a similar result of $B_{\rm POS}\sim 115$ $\mathrm{\mu}$G. The mass-to-magnetic-flux ratio in critical value units, $\lambda\sim0.3$, is the smallest among the values obtained for other regions surveyed by POL-2. This implies that the LkH$\alpha$ 101 region is sub-critical and the magnetic field is strong enough to prevent gravitational collapse. The inferred $\delta B/B_0\sim 0.3$ implies that the large scale component of the magnetic field dominates the turbulent one. The variation of the polarization fraction with total emission intensity can be fitted by a power-law with an index of $\alpha=0.82\pm0.03$, which lies in the range previously reported for molecular clouds. We find that the polarization fraction decreases rapidly with proximity to the only early B star (LkH$\alpha$ 101) in the region. Topological phases and their topological features are enriched by the fundamental time-reversal, particle-hole, and chiral as well as crystalline symmetries. While one-dimensional (1D) generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) systems show various topological phenomena such as topological solitons and topological charge pumping, it remains unclear how such symmetry protects and relates such topological phenomena. Here we show that the generalized time-reversal, particle-hole, and chiral symmetry operators consistently explain not only the symmetry transformation properties between the ground states but also the topological features of the topological solitons in prototypical quasi-1D systems such as the SSH, Rice-Mele, and double-chain models. As a consequence, we classify generalized essential operators into three groups: Class I and class II operators connect ground states in between after spontaneous symmetry breaking while class III operators give the generalized particle-hole and chiral symmetries to ground states. Furthermore, class I operators endow the equivalence relation between topological solitons while class II and III operators do the particle-hole relations. Finally, we demonstrate three distinct types of topological charge pumping and soliton chirality from the viewpoint of class I, II, and III operators. We build a general framework to explore the topological features of the generalized 1D electronic system, which can be easily applied in various condensed matter systems as well as photonic crystal and cold atomic systems., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 8 tables

Can a robot be a personal dating coach? Even with the increasing amount of conversational data on the internet, the implementation of conversational robots remains a challenge. In particular, a detailed and professional counseling log is expensive and not publicly accessible. In this paper, we develop a robot dating coaching system leveraging corpus from online communities. We examine people's perceptions of the dating coaching robot with a dialogue module. 97 participants joined to have a conversation with the robot, and 30 of them evaluated the robot. The results indicate that participants thought the robot could become a dating coach while considering the robot is entertaining rather than helpful.

LUCI (Lagrange eUv Coronal Imager) is a solar imager in the Extreme UltraViolet (EUV) that is being developed as part of the Lagrange mission, a mission designed to be positioned at the L5 Lagrangian point to monitor space weather from its source on the Sun, through the heliosphere, to the Earth. LUCI will use an off-axis two mirror design equipped with an EUV enhanced active pixel sensor. This type of detector has advantages that promise to be very beneficial for monitoring the source of space weather in the EUV. LUCI will also have a novel off-axis wide field-of-view, designed to observe the solar disk, the lower corona, and the extended solar atmosphere close to the Sun-Earth line. LUCI will provide solar coronal images at a 2-3 minute cadence in a pass-band centred on 19.5 nm. Observations made through this pass-band allow for the detection and monitoring of semi-static coronal structures such as coronal holes, prominences, and active regions; as well as transient phenomena such as solar flares, limb Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), EUV waves, and coronal dimmings. The LUCI data will complement EUV solar observations provided by instruments located along the Sun-Earth line such as PROBA2-SWAP, SUVI-GOES and SDO-AIA, as well as provide unique observations to improve space weather forecasts. Together with a suite of other remote-sensing and in-situ instruments onboard Lagrange, LUCI will provide science quality operational observations for space weather monitoring.

We present new observations of the active star-formation region NGC 1333 in the Perseus molecular cloud complex from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope B-Fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey with the POL-2 instrument. The BISTRO data cover the entire NGC 1333 complex (~1.5 pc x 2 pc) at 0.02 pc resolution and spatially resolve the polarized emission from individual filamentary structures for the first time. The inferred magnetic field structure is complex as a whole, with each individual filament aligned at different position angles relative to the local field orientation. We combine the BISTRO data with low- and high- resolution data derived from Planck and interferometers to study the multiscale magnetic field structure in this region. The magnetic field morphology drastically changes below a scale of ~1 pc and remains continuous from the scales of filaments (~0.1 pc) to that of protostellar envelopes (~0.005 pc or ~1000 au). Finally, we construct simple models in which we assume that the magnetic field is always perpendicular to the long axis of the filaments. We demonstrate that the observed variation of the relative orientation between the filament axes and the magnetic field angles are well reproduced by this model, taking into account the projection effects of the magnetic field and filaments relative to the plane of the sky. Bonding geometry engineering of metal-oxygen octahedra is a facile way of tailoring various functional properties of transition metal oxides. Several approaches, including epitaxial strain, thickness, and stoichiometry control, have been proposed to efficiently tune the rotation and tilting of the octahedra, but these approaches are inevitably accompanied by unnecessary structural modifications such as changes in thin-film lattice parameters. In this study, we propose a method to selectively engineer the octahedral bonding geometries, while maintaining other parameters that might implicitly influence the functional properties. A concept of octahedral tilt propagation engineering has been developed using atomically designed SrRuO3/SrTiO3 superlattices. In particular, the propagation of RuO6 octahedral tilting within the SrRuO3 layers having identical thicknesses was systematically controlled by varying the thickness of adjacent SrTiO3 layers. This led to a substantial modification in the electromagnetic properties of the SrRuO3 layer, significantly enhancing the magnetic moment of Ru.
