Abstract

Highly functional CD8(+) effector T (Teff) cells can persist in large numbers during controlled persistent infections, as exemplified by rare HIV-infected individuals who control the virus. Here we examined the cellular mechanisms that maintain ongoing T effector responses using a mouse model for persistent Toxoplasma gondii infection. In mice expressing the protective MHC-I molecule, H-2L(d), a dominant T effector response against a single parasite antigen was maintained without a contraction phase, correlating with ongoing presentation of the dominant antigen. Large numbers of short-lived Teff cells were continuously produced via a proliferative, antigen-dependent intermediate (Tint) population with a memory-effector hybrid phenotype. During an acute, resolved infection, decreasing antigen load correlated with a sharp drop in the Tint cell population and subsequent loss of the ongoing effector response. Vaccination approaches aimed at the development of Tint populations might prove effective against pathogens that lead to chronic infection.

Abstract

A totally geodesic map $f:\mathcal X_1\to\mathcal X_2$ between Hermitian symmetric spaces is tight if its image contains geodesic triangles of maximal area. Tight maps were first introduced in [BIW09], and were classified in [Ham13, Ham14, HO14] in the case of irreducible domain. We complete the classification by analyzing also maps from reducible domains. This has applications to the study of maximal representations and of the Hitchin component for representations in the groups $Sp(2n,\mathbb R)$., Comment: 29 pages

Abstract

There are many situations in which it would be beneficial for a robot to have predictive abilities similar to those of rational humans. Some of these situations include collaborative robots, robots in adversarial situations, and for dynamic obstacle avoidance. This paper presents an approach to modeling behaviors of dynamic agents in order to empower robots with the ability to predict the agent's actions and identify the behavior the agent is executing in real time. The method of behavior modeling implemented uses hidden Markov models (HMMs) to model the unobservable states of the dynamic agents. The background and theory of the behavior modeling is presented. Experimental results of realistic simulations of a robot predicting the behaviors and actions of a dynamic agent in a static environment are presented., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We show that there are no tight nonholomorphic maps from irreducible domains into exceptional codomains, the only exception being the already known tight nonholomorphic maps from the Poincare disc. This follows up on previous work by the first author where this was shown for classical codomains.
