Search

Evidence for a spectral flattening of the supernova remnant (SNR) HB3 (G132.7+1.3) was recently claimed in literature based on previously published total flux density data, and the flattening was further interpreted as the discovery of thermal bremsstrahlung emission in the shell of HB3. A spectral flattening has never been observed from any SNR before. Reliable observations of HB3 at frequencies above 3000 MHz are crucial to confirm such a spectral behaviour. We extracted 4800 MHz total intensity and polarisation data of HB3 from the Sino-German 6 cm polarisation survey of the Galactic plane made with the Urumqi 25 m telescope, and analysed the spectrum of HB3, together with Effelsberg data at 1408 MHz and 2675 MHz. We found an overall spectral index of HB3 of alpha=-0.61+-0.06 between 1408 MHz and 4800 MHz, similar to the index at lower frequencies. There is no spectral flattening at high frequencies. We detected strong polarised emission from HB3 at 4800 MHz. Our 4800 MHz data show a tangential field orientation in the HB3 shell., Comment: 5 pages. Published by A&A. New 11cm data used. Our purpose is to place firm observational constraints on the three most widely used theoretical models for the spatial configuration of the large-scale interstellar magnetic field in the Galactic disk, namely, the ring, the axisymmetric and the bisymmetric field models. We use the rotation measures (RMs) of low-latitude Galactic pulsars and combine them with their dispersion measures and estimated distances to map out the line-of-sight component of the interstellar magnetic field in the near half of the Galactic disk. We then fit our map of the line-of-sight field to the three aforementioned theoretical field models and discuss the acceptability of each fit, in order to determine whether the considered field model is allowed by the pulsar data or not. Strictly speaking, we find that all three field models are ruled out by the pulsar data. Furthermore, none of them appears to perform significantly better than the others. From this we conclude that the large-scale interstellar magnetic field in the Galactic disk has a more complex pattern than just circular, axisymmetric or bisymmetric., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Binary pulsar systems are superb probes of stellar and binary evolution and the physics of extreme environments. In a survey with the Arecibo telescope, we have found PSR J1903+0327, a radio pulsar with a rotational period of 2.15 ms in a highly eccentric (e = 0.44) 95-day orbit around a solar mass companion. Infrared observations identify a possible main-sequence companion star. Conventional binary stellar evolution models predict neither large orbital eccentricities nor main-sequence companions around millisecond pulsars. Alternative formation scenarios involve recycling a neutron star in a globular cluster then ejecting it into the Galactic disk or membership in a hierarchical triple system. A relativistic analysis of timing observations of the pulsar finds its mass to be 1.74+/-0.04 Msun, an unusually high value., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures inc Supplementary On-Line Material. A sample of classical IntraDay Variable (IDV) and IDV candidate sources has been monitored with the Urumqi 25m telescope and the Effelsberg 100m telescope. Aim of the project is to investigate the origin of IntraDay Variability, a phenomenon which has been observed in about 30% of flat spectrum radio quasars. Simultaneous Effelsberg-Urumqi observations demonstrated that the Urumqi antenna, although relatively small in diameter, is well suitable for IDV experiments. A few Urumqi datasets, however, turned out to be affected by a spurious $\sim 24$ hours modulation, an effect which has been removed by means of a new procedure for data reduction. In about 14 months, 12 epochs of observation have been collected, for a total observing time of more than 45 days. The epochs are regularly distributed over the whole year, in order to check for the presence of systematic annual changes in the variability time scales - a crucial test for verifying the consistency of source-extrinsic models of the variability. Preliminary time-analysis of the monitored sources revealed some hint for a slowing down of the characteristic time scales of S5~0716+714, a result that, if confirmed, would be compatible with a source-extrinsic origin of the variability, in contrast to previous IDV studies. Pulsars have been recognized as normal neutron stars or quark stars. Sub-millisecond pulsars, if detected, would play an essential and important role in distinguishing quark stars from neutron stars. A key question is how sub-millisecond pulsars could form. Both sub-Keplerian (for neutron and quark stars) and super-Keplerian cases (only for quark stars, which are bound additionally by strong interaction) have been discussed in this paper in order to investigate possible ways of forming sub-millisecond pulsars. In the sub-Keplerian case, the equilibrium periods of both neutron and quark stars could be as low as ~0.4 ms when they are spun up through accretion in binary systems. In the super-Keplerian case, pulsars could very likely have an initial period of ~0.1 ms if quark stars with different mass could be formed from accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of white dwarfs. The timescale for a sub-millisecond pulsar to keep its period <1 ms is restricted due to gravitational wave radiation. We found that the timescales of neutron stars within sub-millisecond periods are approximately ~10 yr, but the timescales estimated (>10 Myr) for low-mass quark stars could be long enough for us to detect., Comment: 12pages, 1 figure, 3 table, this paper has been withdrawn

(Abridged) S147 is a large faint shell-type supernova remnant (SNR). Its remarkable spectral break at cm-wavelengths is an important physical property to characterize the SNR evolution. However, the spectral break is based on radio observations with limited precision. We made new radio continuum and polarization observations of S147 at 11cm and at 6cm with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope and the Urumqi 25-m telescope, respectively. These new data were combined with published lower frequency data from the Effelsberg 100-m telescope and very high frequency data from WMAP to investigate the spectral turnover and polarization properties of S147. S147 consists of numerous filaments embedded in diffuse emission. We found that the integrated flux densities of S147 are 34.8+/-4.0 Jy at 11cm and 15.4+/-3.0Jy at 6cm. These new measurements confirm the known spectral turnover at ~1.5GHz, which can be entirely attributed to the diffuse emission component. The spectral index above the turnover is -1.35+/-0.20. The filamentary emission component has a constant spectral index over the entire wavelength range up to 40.7GHz of -0.35+/-0.15. The weak polarized emission of S147 is at the same level as the ambient diffuse Galactic polarization. The rotation measure of the eastern filamentary shell is about -70 rad/m2. The filamentary and diffuse emission components of S147 have different physical properties, which make S147 outstanding among shell type SNRs.The weak polarization of S147 at 11cm and at 6cm can be attributed to a section of the S147 shell showing a tangential magnetic field direction., Comment: 11 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, the resolution of some figures have been reduced. Variations in the solar wind density introduce variable delays into pulsar timing observations. Current pulsar timing analysis programs only implement simple models of the solar wind, which not only limit the timing accuracy, but can also affect measurements of pulsar rotational, astrometric and orbital parameters. We describe a new model of the solar wind electron density content which uses observations from the Wilcox Solar Observatory of the solar magnetic field. We have implemented this model into the tempo2 pulsar timing package. We show that this model is more accurate than previous models and that these corrections are necessary for high precision pulsar timing applications., Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 13 pages, 4 figures

G156.2+5.7 is a large supernova remnant (SNR) first discovered in the ROSAT X-ray survey but radio observations are rare because of its low surface brightness and large size. Radio continuum and polarization images of the SNR G156.2+5.7 at lambda 6 cm are presented for the first time to be discussed in the context with available data to investigate its physical properties. We obtained an integrated flux density for G156.2+5.7 of S6cm= 2.5+-0.5Jy. The spectral index of the integrated emission is alpha=-0.48+-0.08 between lambda 74 cm and 6 cm excluding compact radio sources. We also obtained a spectral index map, which shows little variation between the shells and the central area of the SNR. This is consistent with the constant integrated flux density spectrum. Highly polarized radio emission has been detected from the SNR shell, but also from a central patch, which probably originates in the front part of the spherical SNR shell. We derived the distribution of rotation measure from polarization data at 11 cm and 6 cm and found RM gradients of opposite direction in the SNR shell. The SNR G156.2+5.7 is unusual by its exceptionally high X-ray brightness and very low surface-brightness in the radio range. The magnetic field is very well ordered along the shell periphery as expected for a compressed ambient magnetic field. A toroidal magnetic field component is indicated by the RM distribution. Short time-scale radio variations of compact extragalactic radio quasars and blazars known as IntraDay Variability (IDV) can be explained in at least some sources as a propagation effect; the variations are interpreted as scintillation of radio waves in the turbulent interstellar medium of the Milky Way. One of the most convincing observational arguments in favor of a propagation-induced variability scenario is the observed annual modulation in the characteristic time scale of the variation due to the Earth's orbital motion. So far there are only two sources known with a well-constrained seasonal cycle. Annual modulation has been proposed for a few other less well-documented objects. However, for some other IDV sources source-intrinsic structural variations which cause drastic changes in the variability time scale were also suggested. J1128+592 is a recently discovered, highly variable IDV source. Previous, densely time-sampled flux-density measurements with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope (Germany) and the Urumqi 25-m radio telescope (China), strongly indicate an annual modulation of the time scale. The most recent 4 observations in 2006/7, however, do not fit well to the annual modulation model proposed before. Short time-scale radio variations of compact extragalactic radio sources, known as IntraDay Variability, can be explained in at least some sources by a source-extrinsic effect, in which the variations are interpreted as scintillation of radio waves caused by the turbulent ISM of the Milky Way. One of the most convincing observational arguments in favour of propagation-induced variability is the so called annual modulation of the characteristic variability time-scale, which is due to the orbital motion of the Earth. Data for the recently discovered and highly variable IDV source J1128+5925 are presented. We study the frequency and time dependence of the IDV in this compact quasar. We measure the characteristic variability time-scale of the IDV throughout the year, and analyze whether the observed changes in the variability time-scale are consistent with annual modulation. We monitored the flux density variability of J1128+5925 with dense time sampling between 2.7 and 10.45GHz with the 100m Effelsberg radio telescope of the MPIfR and with the 25m Urumqi radio telescope. From ten observing sessions, we determine the variability characteristics and time-scales. The observed pronounced changes of the variability time-scale of J1128+5925 are modelled with an anisotropic annual modulation model. The observed frequency dependence of the variation is in good agreement with the prediction from interstellar scintillation. Adopting a simple model for the annual modulation model and using also the frequency dependence of the IDV, we derive a lower limit to the distance of the scattering screen and an upper limit to the scintillating source size. Because of the contamination of jets, using the size -- continuum luminosity relation can overestimate the broad line region (BLR) size and black hole mass for radio-loud AGNs. We propose a new relation between the BLR size and $H_{\beta}$ emission line luminosity and present evidences for using it to get more accurate black hole masses of radio-loud AGNs. For extremely radio-loud AGNs such as blazars with weak/absent emission lines, we suggest to use the fundamental plane relation of their elliptical host galaxies to estimate the central velocity dispersions and black hole masses, if their host galaxies can be mapped., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. (Abridged) Polarization measurements of the Galactic plane at lambda6 cm probe the interstellar medium (ISM) to larger distances compared to measurements at longer wavelengths, hence enable us to investigate properties of the Galactic magnetic fields and electron density. We are conducting a new lambda6 cm continuum and polarization survey of the Galactic plane covering 10degr < l < 230degr and |b|<5degr. Missing large-scale structures in the U and Q maps are restored based on extrapolated polarization K-band maps from the WMAP satellite. The lambda6 cm data are analyzed together with maps at other bands. We discuss some results for the first survey region, 7degr X 10degr in size, centered at (l,b)=(125.5degr, 0degr). Two new passive Faraday screens, G125.6-1.8 and G124.9+0.1, were detected. They cause significant rotation of background polarization angles but little depolarization. G124.9+0.1 was identified as a new faint HII region at a distance of 2.8 kpc. G125.6-1.8, with a size of about 46 pc, has neither correspondence in enhanced Halpha emission nor a counterpart in total intensity. A model combining foreground and background polarization modulated by the Faraday screen was developed. Using this model, we estimated the strength of the ordered magnetic field along the line of sight to be 3.9 microGauss for G124.9+0.1, and exceeding 6.4 microGauss for G125.6-1.8. We obtained an estimate of 2.5 and 6.3 mK/kpc for the average polarized and total synchrotron emissivity towards G124.9+0.1. {Magnetic fields exist on all scales in our Galaxy. There is a controversy about whether the magnetic fields in molecular clouds are preserved from the permeated magnetic fields in the interstellar medium (ISM) during cloud formation. We investigate this controversy using available data in the light of the newly revealed magnetic field structure of the Galactic disk obtained from pulsar rotation measures (RMs).} % {We collected measurements of the magnetic fields in molecular clouds, including Zeeman splitting data of OH masers in clouds and OH or HI absorption or emission lines of clouds themselves.} % {The Zeeman data show structures in the sign distribution of the line-of-sight component of the magnetic field. Compared to the large-scale Galactic magnetic fields derived from pulsar RMs, the sign distribution of the Zeeman data shows similar large-scale field reversals. The determination of the central black hole mass is crucial to the understanding of AGN physics. In this paper we briefly review some methods that are currently used to estimate the black hole mass of AGNs. Particularly we demonstrate the importance of two correlations: one between the black hole mass and the stellar velocity dispersion and another one between the broad line region (BLR) size and the optical continuum luminosity. Besides applying these relations in deriving black hole masses of various types of AGNs, we also employed the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies to estimate the central velocity dispersions of AGN host galaxies, and then the black hole masses of AGNs including BL Lac objects. In addition, we derived another empirical relation between the BLR size and H_beta emission line luminosity from AGNs with the BLR size measured by reverberation mapping studies, and argued that more accurate black hole masses of extremely radio-loud AGNs could be obtained with it than using the usual R-L_{5100\AA} relation because of the jet contribution to the optical continuum. The relationship between the emission-line equivalent width and the continuum luminosity, so called the Baldwin effect, plays an important role in studying the physics of the broad line region of AGNs. Using the archived ultraviolet spectra obtained by IUE, HST, and HUT in 1978-2002, we investigated the intrinsic CIV Baldwin effect of a well-studied Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151. Both its continuum flux and CIV emission-line flux varied about two orders of magnitude in more than two decades, making it one of the best targets for studying the slope variation of the Baldwin effect. We fitted the CIV line profile of the 490 archived UV spectra of NGC 4151 with the same model consisting of a few Gaussian components, and derived the slope in the log-log plot for the total flux of CIV emission line against the UV continuum flux in different observation epochs.We found that the slope is not constant for NGC 4151, as it varies from 0.58 in the highest flux epoch to 0.83 in the lowest flux epoch. The slope evidently decreases as the continuum flux increases, which reinforces the previous findings of the non-constant slope in the H_beta Baldwin effect of NGC 5548 and the CIV Baldwin effect of Fairall 9. Our result suggests that such a non-constant slope may not be unusual for AGNs. Its physical origin is probably related to the different non-linear responses of the emission line to the variable ionizing continuum caused by the different accretion modes at different luminosity levels. We briefly discuss the effects of various absorption components in the CIV line profile of NGC 4151 and argue that the slope variation is not driven mainly by the absorption effect. The recently started Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFA) pulsar survey aims to find ~1000 new pulsars. Due to its high time and frequency resolution the survey is especially sensitive to millisecond pulsars, which have the potential to test gravitational theories, detect gravitational waves and probe the neutron-star equation of state. Here we report the results of our preliminary analysis: in the first months we have discovered 21 new pulsars. One of these, PSR J1906+0746, is a young 144-ms pulsar in a highly relativistic 3.98-hr low-eccentricity orbit. The 2.61 +- 0.02 solar-mass system is expected to coalesce in ~300 Myr and contributes significantly to the computed cosmic inspiral rate of compact binary systems., Comment: 8 pages, invited review for the Hanas Pulsar Symposium, ChJAA in press

We update the systematic studies of circular polarization in integrated pulse profiles by Han et al (1998). Data of circular polarization profiles are compiled. Sense reversals can occur in core or cone components, or near the intersection between components. The correlation between the sense of circular polarization and the sense of position angle variation for conal-double pulsars is confirmed with a much large database. Circular polarization of some pulsars has clear changes with frequency. A decade ago, there was very limited knowledge of magnetic fields of our Galaxy. The local fields in the Solar vicinity were known to be directed towards a Galactic longitude $l\sim~90^{\circ}$ with reversed directions at smaller Galacto-radii. The regular field strength was found to be about 2~$\mu$G. The filaments near the Galactic Center show the possible poloidal fields there. There was no information about the magnetic fields in the Galactic halo. In last decade, there has been significant progress on measurements of the Galactic magnetic fields. In the Galactic disk, from the RMs of a large number of newly observed pulsars, large-scale magnetic fields along the spiral arms have been delineated in a much larger region then ever before, with alternating directions in the arm and interarm regions. The toroidal fields in the Galactic halo were revealed to have opposite directions below and above the Galactic plane, which is an indication of A0 dynamo operating in the halo. The strength of large-scale fields also has been found from pulsar RM data to exponentially increase at smaller Galacto-radii. Compared to the steep Kolmogorov spectrum of magnetic energy at small scales, the large-scale magnetic fields show a shallow broken spatial magnetic energy spectrum., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. The large-scale magnetic field of our Galaxy can be probed in three dimensions using Faraday rotation of pulsar signals. We report on the determination of 223 rotation measures from polarization observations of relatively distant southern pulsars made using the Parkes radio telescope. Combined with previously published observations these data give clear evidence for large-scale counterclockwise fields (viewed from the north Galactic pole) in the spiral arms interior to the Sun and weaker evidence for a counterclockwise field in the Perseus arm. However, in interarm regions, including the Solar neighbourhood, we present evidence that suggests that large-scale fields are clockwise. We propose that the large-scale Galactic magnetic field has a bisymmetric structure with reversals on the boundaries of the spiral arms. Streaming motions associated with spiral density waves can directly generate such a structure from an initial inwardly directed radial field. We report the discovery of PSR J1906+0746, a young 144-ms pulsar in a highly relativistic 3.98-hr orbit with an eccentricity of 0.085 and expected gravitational wave coalescence time of 300 Myr. The new pulsar was found during precursor survey observations with the Arecibo 1.4-GHz feed array system and retrospectively detected in the Parkes Multibeam plane pulsar survey data. From radio follow-up observations with Arecibo, Jodrell Bank, Green Bank, and Parkes, we have measured the spin-down and binary parameters of the pulsar and its basic spectral and polarization properties. We also present evidence for pulse profile evolution, which is likely due to geodetic precession, a relativistic effect caused by the misalignment of the pulsar spin and total angular momentum vectors. Our measurements show that PSR J1906+0746 is a young object with a characteristic age of 112 kyr. From the measured rate of orbital periastron advance 7.57+/-0.03 deg/yr, we infer a total system mass of 2.61+/-0.02 Msun. While these parameters suggest that the PSR J1906+0746 binary system might be a younger version of the double pulsar system, intensive searches for radio pulses from the companion have so far been unsuccessful. It is therefore not known whether the companion is another neutron star or a massive white dwarf. Regardless of the nature of the companion, a simple calculation suggests that the Galactic birth rate of binaries similar to PSR J1906+0746 is 60/Myr. This implies that PSR J1906+0746 will make a significant contribution to the computed cosmic inspiral rate of compact binary systems., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Radio continuum and polarization observations of the entire Cygnus Loop at 6cm wavelength were made with the Urumqi 25m telescope. The 6cm map is analysed together with recently published maps from the Effelsberg 100m telescope at 21cm and 11cm. The integrated flux density of the Cygnus Loop at 6cm is 90+/-9Jy, which implies a spectral index of -0.40+/-0.06 being consistent with that of Uyaniker et al. (2004) in the wavelength range up to 11cm. This rules out any global spectral steepening up to 6cm. However, small spectral index variations in some regions of the source are possible, but there are no indications for any spectral curvature. The linear polarization data at 6cm show percentage polarizations up to 35% in some areas of the Cygnus Loop, exceeding those observed at 11cm. The Rotation Measure is around -21rad/m^2 in the southern area, which agrees with previous observations. However, the distribution of Rotation Measures is rather complex in the northern part of the Cygnus Loop, where the 21cm emission is totally depolarized. Rotation Measures based on 11cm and 6cm data are significantly larger than in the southern part. The difference in the polarization characteristic between the northern and southern part supports previous ideas that the Cygnus Loop consists of two supernova remnants., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report results from the initial stage of a long-term pulsar survey of the Galactic plane using the Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFA), a seven-beam receiver operating at 1.4 GHz with 0.3 GHz bandwidth. The search targets Galactic latitudes |b| < 5 deg in the longitude ranges 32 deg < l < 77 deg and 168 deg < l < 77 deg. Data discussed here were collected over a 100 MHz passband centered on 1.42 GHz using a spectrometer that recorded 256 channels every 64 microsec. In a preliminary, standard period-DM analysis, we have detected 29 previously known pulsars and discovered 11 new ones. One of these, with a period of 69 ms and a low characteristic age of 82 kyr, is a plausible candidate for association with the unidentified EGRET source 3EG J1928+1733. Another is a non-recycled pulsar in a relativistic binary with orbital period of 3.98 hr. We also search the data for isolated dispersed pulses, a technique that yielded discovery of an extremely sporadic radio emitter with a spin period of 1.2 s. Simulations we have carried out indicate that about 1000 new pulsars will be found in the ALFA survey. In addition to providing a large sample for use in population analyses and for probing the magnetoionic interstellar medium, the survey maximizes the chances of finding rapidly spinning millisecond pulsars and pulsars in compact binary systems. Interstellar magnetic fields exist over a broad range of spatial scales, extending from the large Galactic scales ($\sim 10$ kpc) down to the very small dissipative scales ($\ll 1$ pc). In this paper, we use a set of 490 pulsars distributed over roughly one third of the Galactic disk out to a radius $R \simeq 10$ kpc (assuming $R_\odot = 8.5$ kpc) and combine their observed rotation and dispersion measures with their estimated distances to derive the spatial energy spectrum of the Galactic interstellar magnetic field over the scale range $0.5 - 15$ kpc. We obtain a nearly flat spectrum, with a 1D power-law index $\alpha=-0.37\pm0.10$ for $E_{\rm B}(k)=C k^{\alpha}$ and an rms field strength of approximately $6 \mu$G over the relevant scales. Our study complements the derivation of the magnetic energy spectrum over the scale range $0.03 - 100$ pc by \citet{ms96b}, showing that the magnetic spectrum becomes flatter at larger scales. The inner annular gap (IAG), a new type of inner gap whose magnetic field lines intersect the null charge surface (NCS), is proposed to explain $\gamma$-ray and radio emission from pulsars. The IAG can be an important source for high-energy particles. The particles can radiate between the NCS and the IAG. Some observational characteristics in both $\gamma$-ray and radio bands, such as the $\gamma$-ray emission beams of Crab-like, Vela-like and Geminga-like, can be reproduced by numerical method. It is predicted that the view angle $\zeta$ should be larger than the inclination angle ($\zeta>\alpha$), otherwise the $\gamma$-ray radiation will have little possibility to be observed. Whether the inner annular gap (or cap) is sparking (or free flow) depends on the surface binding energy of the pulsar. In stead of neutron star models, the scenario of the IAG is favorable for bare strange star models, because bare strange stars can easily satisfy the requisite condition to form an IAG for both pulsars ($\vec{\Omega}\cdot \vec{B}<0$) and anti-pulsars ($\vec\Omega \cdot \vec{B}>0$)., Comment: ApJL, accepted

An empirical relation between the broad line region (BLR) size and optical continuum luminosity is often adopted to estimate the BLR size and then the black hole mass of AGNs. However, optical luminosity may not be a good indicator of photoionizing luminosity for extremely radio-loud AGNs because the jets usually contribute significantly to the optical continuum. Therefore, the black hole masses derived for blazar-type AGNs with this method are probably overestimated. Here we first derived a tight empirical relation between the BLR size and the H$_\beta$ emission line luminosity, $R(\rm{light-days})= 24.05(L_{H_\beta}/10^{42} ergs s^{-1})^{0.68}$, from a sample of 34 AGNs with the BLR size estimated with the reverberation mapping technique. Then we applied this relation to estimate the black hole masses of some AGNs and found that for many extremely radio-loud AGNs the black hole masses obtained with the $R-L_{H_\beta}$ relation are systematically lower than those derived previously with the $R-L_{5100\AA}$ relation, while for radio-quiet and slightly radio-loud AGNs the results obtained with these two methods are almost the same. The difference of black hole masses estimated with these two relations increases with the radio-loudness for extremely radio-loud AGNs, which is consistent with the fact that their equivalent widths of H$_{\beta}$ emission line become smaller at higher radio-loudness. If the small H$_{\beta}$ equivalent widths of extremely radio-loud AGNs are indeed caused by the beaming effect, we argue that the optical emission line luminosity may be a better tracer of ionizing luminosity for blazar-type AGNs and the black hole mass derived with the $R-L_{H_\beta}$ relation are probably more accurate., Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Mean pulse profiles and polarization properties are presented for nine southern pulsars. The observations were made using the Parkes radio telescope at frequencies near 1330 MHz; three of the nine pulsars were also observed at 660 MHz. A very high degree of circular polarization was observed in PSR J1603-7202. Complex position angle variations which are not well described by the rotating-vector model were observed in PSRs J2124-3358 and J2145-0750, both of which have very wide profiles. Pulsar motions in our Galaxy from their birth until 2 Gyr are studied statistically via Monte-Carlo simulation of $2\times 10^5$ pulsars with the best available representation of the Galactic potential. We find that the distribution of height above the Galactic plane for pulsars with characteristic ages less than about 8 Myr could be well fitted by a Gaussian function. For older pulsars, an extra exponential function is necessary to fit the distribution. The scale-height of the Gaussian component increases linearly with time until about 40 Myr. The height distribution becomes stabilized after about 200 Myr. These results are not sensitive to initial height or radial distributions. Taking the relationship between the initial velocity and height distribution, we found from the latest pulsar catalog that the height distribution of pulsars younger than 1 Myr directly implies the mean initial velocity of $280\pm96$ km s$^{-1}$. Comparison of simulated sample of pulsars with the current available millisecond pulsars shows that their 1D initial velocity dispersion should be most probably $60\pm10$ km s$^{-1}$., Comment: 11 pages, 16 figures, accepted by MNRAS

In this review, I will first introduce possible methods to probe the large-scale magnetic fields in our Galaxy and discuss their limitations. The magnetic fields in the Galactic halo, mainly revealed by the sky distribution of rotation measures of extragalactic radio sources, probably have a global structure of a twisted dipole field. The large-scale field structure in the Galactic disk has been most efficiently deduced from pulsar rotation measures (RMs). There has been a lot of progress since the 1980s when the magnetic field in the local area of our Galaxy was first traced by a very small sample of local pulsars. Now we have pulsars distributed in about one third of the whole Galactic disk of the interstellar medium, which shows that the large-scale magnetic fields go along the spiral arms and that the field directions reverse from arm to arm. The RMs of newly discovered pulsars in the very inner Galaxy have been used to show the coherent magnetic field in the Norma arm. The magnetic fields in the Galactic disk most probably have a bisymmetric spiral structure., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. We study structure functions of rotation measures in the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS) region and the North Galactic Pole (NGP) to extract the interstellar medium (ISM) fluctuation information. The CGPS data are divided into three longitude intervals: $82^\circ1^\circ$. The power law indices get smaller from CGPS1 to CGPS3 and the amplitudes decrease. The variations of the large-scale field and the electron density have only negligible effects on the structure function and thus cannot account for the changes, indicating that the turbulent properties of the Galactic ISM are intrinsically longitude-dependent. The Kolmogorov-like fluctuation spectrum of the electron density or the magnetic field should produce a power law structure function with an index of 5/3 or 2/3, neither of which is consistent with our results of small indices in the three sub-CGPS regions. For the NGP region, the structure function is flat, showing that the rotation measures are mostly intrinsic to the extragalactic sources, and the ISM is very random in that part of our Galaxy. Pulsars are among the most highly polarized sources in the universe. The NVSS has catalogued 2 million radio sources with linear polarization measurements, from which we have selected 253 sources, with polarization percentage greater than 25%, as targets for pulsar searches. We believe that such a sample is not biased by selection effects against ultra-short spin or orbit periods. Using the Parkes 64m telescope, we conducted searches with sample intervals of 0.05 ms and 0.08 ms, sensitive to submillisecond pulsars. The low-frequency profiles of some pulsars manifest temporal broadening due to scattering, usually accompanied by flat polarization position angle (PA) curves. Assuming that the scattering works on the 4 Stokes parameters in the same way, we have simulated the effect of scattering on polarization profiles and find that the scattering can indeed flatten the PA curves. Since the higher-frequency profiles suffer less from scattering, they are convolved with scattering models to fit the observed low-frequency profiles. Magnetic fields are observed everywhere in the universe. In this review, we concentrate on the observational aspects of the magnetic fields of Galactic and extragalactic objects. Up to now, the limited Galactic distribution of the known pulsar population has restricted these investigations to within a few kiloparsec of the Sun. The Parkes multibeam pulsar survey has discovered many more-distant pulsars which enables us for the first time to explore the magnetic field in most of the nearby half of the Galactic disk. Here we report the detection of counterclockwise magnetic fields in the Norma spiral arm using pulsar rotation measures. The fields are coherent in direction over a linear scale of $\sim 5$ kpc along the arm and have a strength of $-4.4\pm0.9$ $\mu$G. The magnetic field between the Carina-Sagittarius and Crux-Scutum arms is confirmed to be coherent from $l\sim45\degr$ to $l\sim305\degr$ over a length of $\sim 10$ kpc. We identified 16 pulsars from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm (FIRST) at 1.4 GHz. Their positions and total flux densities are extracted from the FIRST catalog. Comparing the source positions with those in the PSRcatalog, we obtained better determined positions of PSRs J1022+1001, J1518+4904, J1652+2651, and proper motion upper limits of another three pulsars PSRs J0751+1807, J1012+5307, J1640+2224. We estimated black hole masses for 9 Seyfert 1 and 13 Seyfert 2 galaxies in the Palomar and CfA bright Seyfert samples using the tight correlation between black hole mass and bulge velocity dispersion. Combining other 13 Seyfert 1s and 2 Seyfert 2s in these samples but with black hole masses measured recently by reverberation mapping and stellar/gas dynamics, we studied the correlations of black hole masses with radio loudness and bulge luminosities for a sample of 37 Seyfert galaxies. We found that if radio-loudness is measured using the optical and radio luminosities of the nuclear components, the black hole masses of radio-loud Seyfert 1s tend to increase with the radio-loudness. The black hole masses of all Seyfert galaxies increase with the radio power, but Seyfert galaxies have larger radio powers than nearby galaxies with the same black hole masses. In addition, the correlation between black hole masses and bulge V-band luminosities for Seyfert galaxies is consistent with that found for quasars and normal galaxies. The combined sample of 37 Seyfert galaxies, 15 quasars and 30 normal galaxies suggests a possible universal nonlinear relation between black hole and bulge masses, $M(BH) \propto M(bulge)^{1.74\pm0.14}$, which is slightly steeper than that found recently by Laor (2001) for a smaller sample. This nonlinear relation is supported by a larger sample including 65 Seyfert galaxies. The different M(BH)/M(bulge) ratio for galaxies with different bulge luminosities or different black hole masses may be explained by this relation. A tight correlation of black hole mass and central velocity dispersion has been found recently for both active and quiescent galaxies. By applying this correlation, we develop a simple method to derive the inclination angles for a sample of 11 Seyfert 1 galaxies that have both measured central velocity dispersions and black hole masses estimated by reverberation mapping. These angles, with a mean value of 36 degree that agrees well with the result obtained by fitting the iron K$\alpha$ lines of Seyfert 1s observed with ASCA, provide further support to the orientation-dependent unification scheme of AGN. A positive correlation of the inclinations with observed FWHMs of H$\beta$ line and a possible anti-correlation with the nuclear radio-loudness have been found. We conclude that more accurate knowledge on inclinations and broad line region dynamics is needed to improve the black hole mass determination of AGN with the reverberation mapping technique., Comment: 12 pages including 4 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

The shapes of pulse profiles, especially their variations with respect to observing frequencies, are very important to understand emission mechanisms of pulsars, while no previous attempt has been made in interpreting the complicated phenomenology. In this paper, we present theoretical simulations for the integrated pulse profiles and their frequency evolution within the framework of the inverse Compton scattering (ICS) model proposed by Qiao (1988) and Qiao & Lin (1998). Using the phase positions of the pulse components predicted by the ``beam-frequency figure'' of the ICS model, we present Gaussian fits to the multi-frequency pulse profiles for some pulsars. It is shown that the model can reproduce various types of the frequency evolution behaviors of pulse profiles observed., Comment: Accepted by A&A

The fundamental plane of spiral galaxies was searched from observational data, which can be approximately represented in observational parameters by $ L \propto V^2 R $, where $L$, $R$, and $V$ are the luminosity, the linear size of galactic disk, and the rotation velocity. This plane exists at all optical bands in our samples of more than 500 spiral galaxies in total. It is more fundamental than the relationship between any two of the parameters, and can reduce the residual of the Tully--Fisher $L$--$V$ relations by about 50\%. Noticed that the power index of $V$ is doubled from that of $R$, which implies that the total mass and the mass distribution of galaxies plays an important role in forming the fundamental plane. The large scale magnetic fields of our Galaxy have been mostly revealed by rotation measures ($RM$s) of pulsars and extragalactic radio sources. In the disk of our Galaxy, the average field strength over a few kpc scale is about 1.8 $\mu$G, while the total field, including the random fields on smaller scales, has a strength of about 5 $\mu$G. The local regular field, if it is part of the large scale field of a bisymmetric form, has a pitch angle of about $-8\degr$. There are at least three, and perhaps five, field reversals from the Norma arm to the outer skirt of our Galaxy., Comment: 4 pages. Using all available multi-component radio pulse profiles for pulsars with medium to long periods and good polarisation data, we have constructed a two-dimensional image of the mean radio beamshape. This shows a peak near the centre of the beam but is otherwise relatively uniform with only mild enhancements in a few regions. This result supports the patchy-beam model for emission beams in which the mean beam shape represents the properties of the emission mechanism and observed pulse components result from emission sources distributed randomly across the beam., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. We propose that the violent breakdown of the Ruderman-Sutherland type vacuum gap above the pulsar polar cap region may produce copious primary particles and make the charge density above the gap in excess of the Goldreich-Julian density. Such an excess residue of charge density may arise some re-acceleration regions above the gap due to the space-charge-limited flow mechanism. Such re-acceleration regions, if exist, may accelerate particles to carry away more spin-down energy, and may have some implications for pulsar $\gamma$-ray emission., Comment: 2 pages, no figures, LaTeX

We carried out the Gaussian fitting to the profile of PSR B1237+25 and found that six components rather than five are necessary to make a good fit. In the central part, we found that the core emission is not filled pencil beam but is a small hollow cone. This implies that the impact angle could be $\beta<0.5^\circ$. Qiao and his collaborators recently proposed an inverse Compton Scattering (ICS) model to explain radio emission of pulsars. In this paper, we investigate the polarization properties of pulsar emission in the model. First of all, using the lower frequency approximation, we derived the analytical amplitude of inverse Compton scattered wave of a single electron in strong magnetic field. We found that the out-going radio emission of a single relativistic electron scattering off the ``low frequency waves'' produced by gap-sparking should be linearly polarized and have no circular polarization at all. However, considering the coherency of the emission from a bunch of electrons, we found that the out-going radiation from the inner part of emission beam, i.e., that from the lower emission altitudes, prefers to have circular polarization. Computer simulations show that the polarization properties, such as the sense reversal of circular polarization near the pulse center, S-shape of position angle swing of the linear polarization, strong linear polarization in conal components, can be reproduced in the ICS model., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, LaTeX. We have obtained 63 rotation measures (RMs) from polarization observations of southern pulsars, of which 54 are new measurements and 3 are varied from previous values. The new pulsar RM data at high Galactic latitudes are mostly consistent with the antisymmetric RM distribution found previously. For the Galactic disc, evidence for a field reversal near the Perseus arm, and possibly another beyond it, is presented. Inside the Solar Circle, in addition to the two known field reversals in or near the Carina-Sagittartus arm and the Crux-Scutum arm, a further reversal in the Norma arm is tentatively identified. These reversals, together with the pitch angle derived from pulsar RM and stellar polarization distributions, are consistent with bisymmetric spiral (BSS) models for the large-scale magnetic field structure in the disc of our Galaxy. We identified 97 strong pulsars from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) at 1.4 GHz north of Dec(J2000) $>-40\degr$. The total flux density, linear polarization intensity and polarization angle (PA) of all pulsars are extracted from the NVSS catalog. The well-calibrated PA measurement of 5 pulsars can be used for absolute PA calibrations in other observations. Comparing the source positions with those in the pulsar catalog, we got the first measurement of the proper motion upper limit of PSR B0031-07, which is $\mu_{\alpha}\cos\delta = -102 \pm 74 mas/yr$ and $\mu_{\delta} = -105 \pm 78 mas/yr$., Comment: 7 pages; 3 figures; one big table; To appear in A&A Supplements
