The article discusses the way on how to provide young people the opportunity to explore language diversity in the U.S. One of the ways that would help the young explore language diversity is to share books that validate language variety. The books would make them aware about other languages that exist and satisfy their curiosity about languages other than their own. Included are sample books about diverse language use like "The Happiest Tree," by Uma Krishnaswami.

The article focuses on recent developments in literature exclusively for the African American children. With the current focus on teaching literature that affirms students' cultural experiences, educators need to make a variety of books available to students. John Steptoe, an 18-year-old author and illustrator, published his first picture book "Stevie." This book introduced Robert, a witty, sensitive, and as it turned out, caring young African American boy, who is forced to share his parents. "The Stories Huey Tells," illustrated by Roberta Smith, is a novel illustrated with black and white art, this warm, friendly chapter book is one of several about Huey, his older brother, Julian, and the rest of their family and the everyday adventures they share.
